Connecting Students With The Community

Atthe beginning of each school year, thousands of young adults step onto their college campus as students for the first time. The excitement of exploring a new home is often met with the anxiety that accompanies being unfamiliar with new surroundings. In 2019, Millersville University held its first ComMUnity Fest as a means to connect students with the many businesses and organizations that also call Lancaster County home.

The second ComMUnity Fest was held in front of the Student Memorial Center on Millersville University’s campus on Sept. 14. Hundreds of students roamed the campus, getting to know businesses such as Lancaster Cupcake, Giant Food Stores, Sheetz and Field of Screams. Several restaurants and food vendors handed out free samples and acquainted themselves with the many new faces on campus.

“We want students to feel at home here in Millersville and in Lancaster County as a whole,” said John Kearns, director of operations for the Student Memorial Center.

“We invite vendors, nonprofits and organizations to campus to connect with our students one-on-one. This

way, our community is introduced to students and vice versa.” The event also featured live music and several games and activities for students to take part in.

Among the many businesses and restaurants present were various nonprofit organizations that handed out informational materials to students. Homefields Care Farm was one of the local nonprofits in attendance and offered students information about volunteer opportunities. Located on Letort Road in Millersville, Homefields Care Farm provides work for people with disabilities and educational talks on native plants and organic farming. “We have several pollinator gardens on the property and we place a big emphasis on native plants,” said AnnaJane Williams, a hostess at Homefields. “Right now, it’s pawpaw season, so we have a basket of them and are handing them out to students.” Other organizations present were the Lafayette Fire Company, Lancaster General Health and Sky Zone.

Millersville University took a break from hosting ComMUnity Fest after the first event due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now that the event has returned, the university hopes to make the event a yearly tradition.

Crossing Borders With Music

The Arts at Millersville University began its season on Sept. 6 with a performance by Sandeep Das and the HUM Ensemble at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The program, titled “Delhi to Shiraz,” consisted of multiple new arrangements from the group that were influenced by the long history and relationship between Indian and Persian cultures.

The performance featured several pieces performed on traditional Indian instruments such as the tabla, sitar, sarangi and santoor, and it incorporated elements from both cultures. Expressed as a theoretical journey between the ancient cities of Delhi and Shiraz, the program integrated poetry, classical Indian raags and traditional Persian arrangements to illustrate a union of both cultures that overcomes borders. “Delhi to Shiraz” is part of Das’ larger music initiative

On Sept. 17, before Penn Manor’s girls’ soccer team took on Bishop McDevitt, the 2002 state champion Comets were recognized.

On June 8, 2002, the Comets battled Council Rock High School, the defending state and national champions, for the 2002 state championship trophy at Hersheypark. At the end of 80 minutes of regulation play, the teams were tied at 1-1. Playing two 10-minute sudden-victory overtime periods, followed by two five-minute extra periods, neither team gave up a goal and state co-champs were declared. Penalty kicks were put in place the following year to prevent co-champions.

This team further distinguished itself as the first team in school history to win a team state championship. It also became the first team, boys or girls, from the Lancaster-Lebanon League to win all four titles - section, leagues, districts, and statesin one season, finishing with a 25-2-2 record. The team was ranked sixth in the nation.

This team tied the state record for most team

shutouts in a season with 20 at that time (which is now at 21 and shared with Penn Manor’s 2011 team). It also recorded the most victories in program history and 99 goals scored, which are both still program records. Those present for the ceremony included Carli Brill Egland, Julie Fleming Richardson, Melissa Frerichs Mealy, Lindsay Miller Gring, Jackie Ochs-Gregory Texter, Annie

Schwartz Kerekgyarto, and coaches Bill Zapata, Jason Hottenstein, Wes Swanson, Jocelyn Arnold, and Kevin Bower, along with scorekeeper Deb Goodhart. Other team members included Brenna Blalock, Jenny DeGeorge, Ashley Everhart, Keri

Foster, Lindsey Freidly, Emily Hershey, Holly Homsher, Nora Jens, Alicia Kilby, Megan Quinn, Carly Reist, Kambria Riggins, Karrine Riggins, Anna Shiffler, Kasie Shover, Sarah Tymon, Britney Vigil, Jillana Yuska, and coach Jack Kremer.

Transcending Borders One Note at a Time and the HUM Ensemble’s mission to encourage understanding between different cultures around the globe.

Das launched Transcending Borders One Note at a Time in 2020 in conjunction with the HUM Ensemble’s debut album, “Delhi to Damascus,” designed to serve as a vehicle to promote positive social change through the power of music. The initiative includes more than just musical performances, however, also utilizing presentations, talks and community engagement to hold a dialogue on the importance of cultural diversity and understanding. Das’ second initiative is in progress, and since 2020, he has programmed multimedia events at community centers and major universities across the United States.

“We’re delighted to have Sandeep Das here to open the season,” said Amy Banks, the arts communication manager of Millersville’s office of visual and performing arts. “We pride ourselves on being Lancaster County’s home for the cultural arts. Being able to offer a show like ‘Delhi to Shiraz’ helps make the world a little smaller.” Das and the HUM Ensemble participated in engagement workshops at Millersville University in the days leading up to the show, including a solo performance from Das the night before.

The HUM Ensemble was founded by Das in 2010, and it shares his mission of using the influence of music to connect communities around the world. The HUM Ensemble debuted with a concert in New Delhi and garnered popularity in India, performing in major cities across the country. The group has since performed at many venues around the globe, including the Europalia Arts Festival in Brussels and Cal Performances in Berkeley, California.

The HUM Ensemble also

funds a scholarship in addition to its routine musical endeavors. The HUMLANXESS National Scholarship assists children in India with disabilities to pursue a career in the arts. Over a course of five years, the scholarship funds tuition fees, transportation costs for classes, the cost of instruments and many other requirements for artistic pursuits.

After a dominating 8-3 victory over Lampeter-Strasburg, the Comets found the going a bit tougher when they hosted undefeated Wilson Saturday morning, Sept. 17. The hosts worked 11 corners, scored in two quarters, and pulled out a 2-1 non-league thriller.

“They’re the No. 1 team in the district,” said head coach Rachel Suter. “It was a big win. After a scoreless first quarter we talked about taking care of the things we can control, our offense, our attitude.”

The Comets scored on their first corner. Avery Bradburn inserted the corner and Tristan Groff’s hit from the top of the circle was good for a 1-0 lead. Wilson returned the favor with 11:46 left in the third frame.

Both teams battled with midfield play in the fourth before the Comets, with under two minutes remaining forced a pair of corners. The second coming with 48 seconds left. Groff received the insert at the top of the circle, dished a pass to Caity McGough who beat the keeper and provided the game-winning goal.

“It was a well-played game by both teams,” said Suter.

“Tristan played well as did Annie Bibus on defense. She’s a rock back there.

“We are taking things one game at a time,” said Suter.

“The girls are working hard.”

In a wildly entertaining backand-forth affair last Tuesday night in Lititz, McGough notched her second goal of the game, the game-winner, at 9:08 in overtime to provide a 4-3 victory by the Comets (6-1 overall).

McGough scored the only goal of the first quarter, but Warwick responded with a pair in the second frame. Chloe Hook knotted the game at 2-2 in the third and both teams traded fourth quarter tallies with Avery Bradburn sending the game into overtime.

GOLF

In their only home match of the season, the golf team finished with two wins against two losses. Jesse Shue continued to lead the way, carding his average, 75. Aiden Doyle (80), Seb Elias (84), and Cole Beakes (91) rounded out the counters.

Manor wrapped up the season with another third-place effort at Four Seasons GC last Wednesday. Shue’s 74 was the second lowest score of the day. Doyle (77), Elias (83) and JP Radwanski (86) accounted for the 320 team score that followed Cedar Crest (299) and Township (308).

BOYS’ SOCCER

The Comets suffered its third straight one goal loss Thursday, Sept. 15, in a 2-1 result against Warwick. A goal by Tyler Hostetter, assisted by Jonathan Harthon, in the 24th minute tied the game at 1-1 but just four minutes later, Warwick struck again, scoring what proved to be the game-winner.

“Our goal was the result of a great build up through the midfield from Gavin Roberts and Garret Cortez ending in a cross from Jonathan to Tyler,” recalled head coach Paul Taylor. “Their goals were the result of our mistakes.”

Drew Lebo recorded ten saves.

“Our back line of Lucas Victorio, Tommy Lebo, Logan Greenawalt, Thatcher Kratz and Peyton Landis along with stellar performances from our keeper Drew Lebo, has kept our games close.”

Last Monday the Comets suffered a 3-0 result at Manheim Township. Last Wednesday they gave up five second half goals in a 6-1 loss to Hempfield. Tyler Hostetter scored the first goal of the game.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

After an 8-0 victory over CV, the Comets secured its second one-goal victory of the season, edging Warwick 4-3 in overtime on Thursday, Sept. 15. Seven different players contributed to that four-goal effort.

“It was a pretty even game and a crazy second half,” said head coach Bill Zapata whose team held a 1-0 lead on a goal by Carolyn Hinkle, assisted by Lilly Rineer, in the first half.

It was back-and-forth after that with Lauren Stoner, assisted by Carly Keene, notching the game-winner in the 84th minute.

“Our goal was to double team their best player, Olivia Shertzer, and we did that,” said Zapata. “She worked for the two goals she scored. We expected a tough game, and it was.”

Caroline Hinkle, Izzy Kligge and Rineer scored the first three goals with Rineer, Hinkle, Kerrigan Thompson and Keene providing setups.

Saturday night the Comets hosted Bishop McDevitt and picked up a 3-0 shutout. “We had two defenders (Kelly Wall and Annaliese Mann) and a sub (Kerrigan Thompson) score. It’s great to have a bunch of different players contributing to the offense.”

That offense, unfortunately, hit a wall last Monday as visiting Manheim Township scored twice in the second half to secure a 3-1 victory. Rineer’s assist to Stoner tied the game at 1-1 in the first half. Allison Burkholder recorded 13 saves as the Comets seven game win streak ended.

Wednesday’s outing was another tough one. Hempfield scored what proved to be the game winner in the 45th minute.

VOLLEYBALL

Behind 9 kills from Cassidy McCollumn and seven more from Brianna Lee and Lezlie Nguyen, the Comets earned its second straight victory with a 30 thriller (25-23, 25-15, 25-23) over Manheim Township, Thursday, Sept. 15.

Maya Sugra and Jordan Bailey added to the offense with 3 aces each and Eliana Knaub (9 digs) dished out 19 assists. Taylor Long provided a pair of blocked shots while McCollum and Janelle Bowmaster chipped in with 7 digs each.

“Township was missing a key player on offense,” noted head coach Tim Joyce. “But we were winning the serve and pass battle, and that helped us. Although Lezlie and Brianna registered only one official block, they

were getting their hands on many of Township’s attacks and slowing them down,” he added. “Eliana did a nice job distributing sets evenly.”

The Comets played in the Hempfield tournament on Sept. 17. “It was an opportunity to gain experience for our bench,” said Joyce.

In another battle Tuesday, the Comets suffered a 3-0 loss to CV dropping the first and third sets by two points each, 26-24 and 25-23 respectively. by Bob Diller

FOOTBALL

Eli Warfel passed for 134 yards and rushed another 68 while Dahmir Wesley caught three passes for 48 yards and a touchdown as the Comets defeated Cedar Crest 14-9 in the Section Opener in Millersville Friday, September 15. Wesley also batted down a third-and-11 pass from the Comets 25 with ten seconds remaining and DeShawn Stanley added a fourth down interception at the two that sealed the Falcons’ fate.

but only managed a split. Rabatin dominated with a 61, 6-0 win at No. 1 while Autumn Kirkley battled for a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-3, 10-4 win.

The Comets held the Falcons to 85 yards rushing on 24 attempts. They did manage 187 passing yards but that included three interceptions and 35 attempts.

After a scoreless first quarter, Manor took the lead on Warfel’s 21-yard strike to Wesley in the second quarter. A high punt snap on the Comets’ first possession after intermission led to Crest’s Nolan Groff tackling Peter Skiadis in the end zone for a safety.

On the ensuing kickoff Manor marched to the Falcon one before a fumble ended the threat. After an exchange of punts, Osman’s interception led to Warfel passes to Wesley and Kyle Furnier and a fiveyard keeper for the winning TD. Skiadis booted the second of two successful PATs.

Kyle Schmidtke, Jimmy Keck, Spencer Stuart, and Jonathan Osman combined for 12 solo tackles and 15 assists to lead the defense.

TENNIS

A 4-3 loss at Conestoga Valley Monday, Sept. 19, was Manor’s (5-4 overall) fourth one point match this season and the first time they came up short.

With Catherine Rabatin and Erin Shipley securing the only doubles win, the Comets entered singles play down 2-1

Historical Society Plans Musical Presentation

The Millersville Area Historical Society invites the public to a musical presentation, “Songs and Stories of Old Canal Days,” at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8, in Millersville’s Municipal Center, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m.

The presenter will be retired school teacher Matthew Dodd, who has been an active musician for approximately 40 years, playing in rock ‘n’ roll bands and performing solo in his historical folk music shows. The Mechanicsburg-area resident also teaches guitar lessons.

Dodd, playing the character of an old boatman, will sing songs and tell stories related to the life and times of canal boatmen and their families from

around 1820 to 1850. Audience members will be able to examine a photo display of canal life, as well as several models of canal boats. A question-andanswer session will close the

presentation.

Although admission is free, donations are appreciated. For more details, contact Phil Gerber at 717-872-8837 before 5 p.m. or at pge8507@aol.com.

Cleanup Planned At Rail Trail

Big Swing Golf Tournament Set

trestle bridge, as the bridge deck burned in a 2018 arson.

Completion of the work, along with the reconstruction of the crosswalk and trail approaches at the bottom of Red Hill Road, will enable a grand opening of the trestle bridge and a currently closed portion of the rail trail.

The annual Ray Shirk’s Big Swing Golf Tournament will be held Monday, Oct. 3. The event will begin at noon at Conestoga Country Club, 1950 Stone Mill Road, Lancaster. A silent auction will be held along with the golf tournament.

Volunteers will work along the trail and on both sides of the trestle. Tasks will include general weeding, trash and debris removal, minor tree and brush trimming and some mulching.

Martic and Conestoga townships have been working to rebuild the Martic Forge

The opening of the trail will connect Conestoga Township through Martic Township to Providence Township and thereby open a continuous 20-mile section of the rail trail. The work is projected to be completed in late October.

The winner of the Homemade Chocolate Cake Contest was Amanda Kreider of Quarryville. This event is sponsored by the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs (PSACF), which also sponsors the Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest. In the apple pie contest, the winner was Steve Berkoski of Conestoga.

by the Pennsylvania Egg Farmers and the PSACF. Dana Huber from Quarryville had the winning entry, a raspberry swirl angel food cake.

Millie Groff, 9, of Quarryville won the Cookies, Brownies and Bars Junior Baking Contest with her entry of brownies. This contest is sponsored by the PA Preferred program, which is part of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, and the contest encourages youths to find locally grown or produced ingredients for their baking.

All four of these certified contest winners are eligible to enter the Pennsylvania Farm Show in January 2023, where first-place winners can receive cash prizes. Community Cleanup Day will be held at the Enola Low Grade Rail Trail in Martic and Conestoga townships on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 9 a.m. to noon. Community members who would like to help should meet at the Enola Low Grade Rail Trail parking area at the intersection of Red Hill Road and Marticville Road (Route 324) in Pequea.

The tournament was established by Lisa Shirk, a former VisionCorps Foundation trustee, in memory of her husband, Ray Shirk. Ray was a successful business-

man, entrepreneur, and visionary and the founder and CEO of the Securus Group. The Shirks were grateful for the services their grandson received over the years from VisionCorps. Individuals and groups of four can sign up by calling Lisa Shirk at 717-875-1516. Donations of goods and services for the silent auction can also be directed to Lisa Shirk. Proceeds will benefit VisionCorps.

The Theater of the Seventh Sister (TSS) will present a production of “Sleepy Hollow” at the Historic Rock Ford and Theater, with opening night taking place on Thursday, Oct. 13. Two productions will be held on each Thursday and Friday at 7 and 8:30 p.m., and the final performance will be on Friday, Nov. 4.

The play will be performed on the first floor of the Hand Mansion, which will be altered to portray the Van Tassel family home in Washington Irving’s famous tale. Audience members will follow characters such as Ichabod Crane, Brom Bones and Katrina Van Tassel through each room of the mansion as the story is told. “We have a dream cast this year; everyone who is portraying their roles are very fine actors that are physically and vocally suited to their roles,” said Cynthia Charles, artistic and managing director of TSS.

Charles became the artistic and managing director for TSS in 2014 and has assisted with several productions such as “Julius Caesar,” “Tales From the Caretakers” and “Emma the Matchmaker.” Prior to her role with the organization, Charles performed in multiple plays in the area. “I love the quality of the plays we perform; they’re

things you don’t generally see elsewhere. We always love collaborating with Historic Rock Ford and working with artists ranging from emerging playwrights to veteran actors,” said Charles.

TSS was founded in 1989 and has offered several shows to the area over the years, many of which have been held at Historic Rock Ford. The organization does not operate out of any one venue; past collaborations have been held at Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster, Tellus360 and Ephrata Per-

forming Arts Center. The upcoming production of “Sleepy Hollow” will feature primarily local talent, which TSS has relied on following the challenges presented by the COVID19 pandemic and the closure of many theaters. For more information on TSS, visit https://seventhsister.com. To purchase tickets for th event, visit https://tinyurl.com/sleepy hollowtix.

The production has been adapted from its source material by Sam Slaymaker, executive director of Historic Rock

Ford, who has collaborated with TSS many times in the past. Historic Rock Ford itself encompasses over 30 acres of land in southeast Lancaster city and offers guided tours of the centuries-old Hand Mansion, which belonged to Revolutionary War Gen. Edward Hand. “The main thing I think the audience will enjoy is the fact that being at Rock Ford is like going back in time,” said Charles.

Community Forestry Program Slated

Penn State Extension will offer “Reusing Wood and Renewing People in Community Forestry” on Thursday, Sept. 29, from noon to 1 p.m. The program will livestreamed via Zoom. The program is for public tree, landscape, and environmental board members; municipal managers, foresters, and arborists; and anyone interested in urban and community forestry.

Marc Wilken, director of business and event development with the Philadelphia Department of Parks and Recreation, along with collaborating experts at PowerCorpsPHL, Cambium Carbon, and Urban Wood Economy, will discuss Philadelphia’s increase in wood residue and efforts to divert additional residue from landfills. This recovery and reforestation pilot operation includes developing a skilled workforce to prepare and market saleable lumber and wood product line, with a portion of the proceeds being reinvested in tree plantings and forest management across the city. The speakers will seek to demonstrate that novel solutions to reducing wood and landscape waste disposal can be self-supporting and profitable in the right market and that collaboration expertise is available to help develop a stable, skilled workforce among local populations.

Attendees may receive credits from the Society of American

Foresters or the International Society of Arboriculture or a certificate of attendance for professionals and others to self-report. The program can also count as a peer volunteer/Master Gardener update training. There is a fee only for those seeking any of these credits.

Registration is required at https://tinyurl.com/ community-forestry. In addition to the link to access the webinar, registrants will have access to the webinar recording.

Film Premiere, Book Launch Set

A premiere showing of the film “The Rocky Springs Carousel at Dollywood” will take place on First Friday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m. at Mulberry Art Studios, 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. The film shows the carousel in operation in the mid-1990s and its demolition in early 1999.

The Rocky Springs Carousel was brought to Lancaster on Oct. 17, 1999. It was purchased for $1.3 million in private donations but city politics and other factors interfered and it was placed in storage, where it remains to this day.

Eileen Gregg’s new book, “Lancaster’s Hidden Treasure:

The Rocky Springs Dentzel Carousel,” will be available for purchase and signing at the event. Flash drives containing more than four hours of music from the 1901 Gavili organ on the carousel will also be available for purchase.

Before and after the showing, attendees will have an opportunity to visit the opening exhibit of two local artists in the galleries at Mulberry Art Studios.

There is no charge for the event, but those planning to attend are requested to send an email to eileengregg32 @gmail.com in order to receive further information and updates.
