Conestoga Car Show Is Bigger and Better Than Ever

The Conestoga Car Show will be back on Saturday, Sept. 26, for a full day of fun for both families and car enthusiasts.

The show will be held rain or shine from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and has plenty of exciting displays planned.

The Conestoga Car Show has grown from 200 cars during its first year to more than 300 cars spread out over the mile-long stretch of Main Street. The event will also feature vendors, giveaway drawings, a 50/50 drawing, music, a master of ceremonies from WGAL, a variety of food trucks, and an appearance by Smokey the Bear and other characters doing re-enactments.

The free kids’ car show will once again make an appearance, with kids under 12 encouraged to bring any vehicle with wheels as long as it doesn’t have a gas engine. Local first responders, like the fire department and EMS, will also be there with vehicles for kids to see and learn more about.

At 2:15 p.m., there will be a trophy presentation with awards in the following 12 categories: Best of Conestoga, Best of Show, People’s Choice, First Responders’ Choice, Most Original (Survivor), Best Paint, Best Truck, Best Jeep, Best Engine, Best Motorcycle, Best Interior, and Best Modern Muscle (2000 or newer). There will be a separate trophy for the kids’ car show.

Help the Fight will host its 17th annual Main Event Benefit and Auction on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. The event will take place at Spooky Nook Meetings & Events, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim.

The organization’s signature fundraising event brings together local businesses, community members, breast cancer sur vivors, patients, families, and supporters for an event dedicated to making a difference in the lives of local individuals facing breast cancer, along with their families. Held at the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Main Event serves as Help the Fight’s largest annual fundraiser and plays an important role in sustaining the organization’s mission of ensuring that no one in the community faces breast cancer alone.

Guests may enjoy a buffet dinner, assorted desserts, and a cash bar featuring a specialty pink mocktail. The Main Event will also include stories of hope and resilience, a live auction, an online silent auction, giveaway drawings, and other opportunities to support Help the Fight’s mission.

The inaugural Lancaster Capital Day will be staged from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, a date that is historically close to Sept. 27, 1777, when Lancaster famously served as the United States’ capital for a sing le d ay. L ancaster Capital Day will be conducted in the closed streets and surrounding blocks of 1 Penn Square in the city, at the precise location where the Continental Congress convened an official session inside the L ancaster County Courthouse.

Lancaster Capital Day is free to attend, and everyo n e i s w e l co m e . W i t h assistance from nearly 100 volunteers, the event is being produced by nonprofit Keystone Events Project, which has secured t he ble s s i n g s o f more than 30 sponsors, public officials and the city of Lancaster. “(Lancaster being America’s capital for a day) is a local claim to fame,” said Austin. “It was really important for us to be on an historic footprint of where history happened.

Capital Day has never been celebrated quite like this.

There was a desire to celebrate it in our own way.

I think it’s really cool to look at American history through a Lancaster lens.”

That Saturday’s street fair buzz will be highlighted by food trucks, craft vendors, historical reflections, artists, information about ser vices from local nonprofits and all-day music performed by musicians on both a main stage and at the F u l to n T h e at re . During the festivities, L ancaster mayor Jaime Arroyo will address the gathering.

“People love coming out, having good food, shopping and hearing good music,” said Austin. “It’s things we love about our community.

We think we can do better if we curate a mix of vendors, but we want to keep the sidewalks free. It’ll be very inviting. In a way, it’s like an open-air restaurant. We’re trying to activate urban space and make it fun for people to be outside.”

Organizers of Lancaster Capital Day are expecting as many as 20,000 visitors to attend.

“It’s a really great time of the year to do festivals,” said Austin. “It’s a Saturday in September, and it’s a market day. There are going to be a lot of reasons to come downtown.

I think we’ll be attracting a lot of the county crowd, and we’re ready for it. The stage is set for a big event.”

Much of Lancaster C a p i t a l D a y ’s f u t u r e will be de ter mined by how the inaugural event comes off and ultimately how it is received by the community.

“I certainly hope it becomes an annual event.

There’s a lot of energ y behind that idea,” said Austin. “We really want to see it happen again. This is the year to start it, and year one is the year you set the tone. By year three, it’s a tradition. I think it’s very realistic that this will become an annual festival.

“Our dream as a group is that it would become a local holiday,” concluded Austin. “I f lo cals care about it, they can make it happen.”

All things spooky, including a local legend, will be the focus of the Columbia Albatwitch Harvest Festival and two upcoming Fright Nights happening in Columbia.

The festival, scheduled for 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept.

26, will be held at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St. Speakers, vendors and activities will focus on cryptids, including the Albatwitch, a small, furry creature who resembles a baby Bigfoot and loves to eat apples.

Sponsored by the Columbia Borough Parks and Recreation department, the festival will feature fun for people of all ages.

Presenters will include Rick Fisher, who is organizing the festival and the Fright Nights; Stacey Leigh and Jason Darden; Rissa Miller and Lon Strickler; and Gwendolyn Purcell.

“We’ll have four bands playing throughout the day,” Fisher said, including the Kracker Beez, Appaloosa Way, Boundaries Lounge Jam and Marny Klein. “We’ll have food trucks and craft vendors, too.”

Food and drinks available for purchase will range from burgers and fries to lemonade, pizza and empanadas.

“The festival will be a day of fun, with games for kids and something for everyone,” Fisher said. “You can come and listen to the lectures, walk around and visit the vendors, get something to eat and listen to music by the river.”

Fisher founded the Albatwitch festival in Columbia many years ago. His fascination with the unexplained began when he was 7 and saw a man standing outside his bedroom at his grandparents’ home. He assumed it was his grandfather, but the next morning his grandmother told him his Pap hadn’t been there. Years later, Fisher learned his sister had seen

As he grew older, Fisher’s interest continued, eventually leading him to collect stories of unexplained encounters from people in Columbia, Wrightsville, Marietta, Bainbridge and surrounding communities.

Those stories were published in his book “Ghosts of the River Towns,” from which he will read at the Albatwitch Harvest Festival.

He’s currently working on another book focused on stories about ghosts of Lancaster County.

Fisher acknowledged there is another event to celebrate the region’s Bigfoot, Albatwich Day, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 10, in Wrightsville. He hopes people will go to both events.

“This is not about competing with the other festival,” he said.

“When that one moved to Wrightsville, I got so many requests to bring it back to Columbia. This way, people can enjoy both festivals.”

After the Columbia festival, Fisher will host the first of two Fright Nights at Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., from 6 to 8 p.m.

He will read from his book at the event, and tours of the dungeon beneath the market will be offered.

Fisher is in the process of restoring the dungeon. He’s ready to install a new floor but first wants to finalize plans to remove plaster that covers the original brick walls.

Fisher is fairly certain the dungeon is haunted, and he recalled an experience a few years ago when he was being interviewed in one of the cells for a local television station.

While Fisher, the cameraman and the reporter were in the former solitary confinement space, the heavy door to the cell began to close on its own.

“There’s no draft down there to move it,” he said. “I didn’t know what it was that was causing that.”

TechLink was recently awarded a $280,000 PA smar t g rant by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) to develop fiber optic instructional labs. The Lancaster County Career & Technology Center is among the members of TechLink, a consortium of nine technical schools focused on expanding career and technical education.

The goal for the new fiber optic instructional labs is to significantly expand hands-on fiber optic training opportunities in southcentral Pennsylvania, with the capacity to serve approximately 400 students annually. The PAsmart grant designated for the project was part of PDE’s latest round of grant distributions, announced on Aug. 21. The awarded funds were received by 17 organizations and totaled $3.5 million.

Initiatives stemming from these funds will expand access to career pathways in multiple industries.

The nine partner schools will implement three shared-equipment instructional labs, which will prepare secondary students and adult learners for fiber optic-related jobs. Students using the instructional labs will complete 40 hours of instruction and earn the CFOT Level 1 Certification, a credential valued by telecommunications, broadband, and electrical companies.

Select information technology teachers from each school will be trained to deliver the curriculum, teach the hands-on skills necessary to be a certified fiber optic technician, and administer the CFOT Level 1 Certification exam. The labs’ fiber optic training equipment will rotate among the TechLink schools to maximize its use and the number of students who can benefit from it. As the lead grant applicant and fiscal agent, the York County School of Technology will manage the funds, procurement, equipment acquisition, and required state reporting.

The car show is hosted by the First Responders’ Friends, a local nonprofit organization that helps raise money for local first responders. The organization is proud of the diverse selection of cars the show draws in. From rare VW buses to 1970 Plymouth Roadr unners, each car has a unique story to tell.

Some owners even bring elaborate displays to put beside their cars that tell the history of the vehicle to provide interactive elements for viewers.

“I go to tons and tons of car shows, and this was actually always one of my favorites,” said Michael Keiser, who helps organize the Conestoga Car Show. “I always like the shows like this where the car actually gets to park on the street. It kind of gives you that old town feel. For a lot of these cars, (it’s) what it was like back when they were brand new.”

The third annual Robert L. Richards Memorial Golf Tournament to Benefit the ODC will take place on Friday, Sept. 25, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Proceeds will go to the Occupational Development Center.
