SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954
In 2006, Millersville University (MU) assistant vice president of advancement Steven DiGuiseppe was honored as the grand marshal of the Millersville Parade. On Thursday, Sept. 24, he will once again be honored with a parade, this one a caravan of cars organized to celebrate his retirement. DiGuiseppe has been affectionately known as “Mr. Millersville” due to his 40-plus-year investment in both the university and the borough. DiGuiseppe followed his older brother to MU, beginning as a freshman in 1978. He so greatly enjoyed his years working on a degree in elementary education that after he graduated in 1982, DiGuiseppe became active with the MU Alumni Association. DiGuiseppe worked at TV Guide Magazine as an assistant regional editor, and then in 1991, he accepted the position of MU’s alumni services director, the first of several positions that focused on advancement. “Meeting alumni from all different class years and backgrounds was inspiring and awesome,” DiGuiseppe remarked. Throughout DiGuiseppe’s career in advancement, including his first 15 years in the alumni engagement area, he was instrumental in launching new events and programs. These include MU After Work, the Fifth Quarter Reception at Homecoming, the Athletic Hall of Fame, the African-American/Latino Alumni scholarship and mentoring programs, and the AfricanAmerican/Latino Alumni Reunion. DiGuiseppe was also involved with Luau by the Lake/senior send-off, Ville Idol, the MU license plate program, and he worked with the MU Destinations and the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) Alumni and Friends travel programs. DiGuiseppe acted as MU’s agency open records/right to know officer and the lead external relations staff member to Millersville Borough Council, the Millersville Business Association, the Manor Township board of supervisors, and the Lancaster Chamber’s Solanco/Penn Manor Consortium. DiGuiseppe also chaired the Millersville Parade initiative, which was created in 1997 to improve town-gown relationships, and superintended its development into one of Lancaster County’s largest parades. Outside of his job responsibilities, DiGuiseppe was active in the community, investing hundreds - if not thousands - of volunteer hours. He co-chaired both the Millersville borough’s 250th anniversary celebration and the Millersville Veterans Memorial Project. DiGuiseppe is currently the interim president for the
Ham Dinner To Support Haiti Mission BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER It has been 10 years since Providence Church members Jeff and Terri Swope became accidental missionaries. Jeff grew up in Haiti, the son of missionaries, and in 2008, he returned to the Caribbean island nation to use his experience in the
construction industry to build an orphanage. “They didn’t have a plan for the older kids, so we went back (in 2010) and started a home for the older boys,” Terri recalled. The Swopes didn’t intend to create an official organization, but people heard about their efforts and See Ham Dinner pg 3

Millersville Business Association. Additionally, he served as the national president of the Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity, advised the MU Student Government Association and the MU Student Ambassadors, chaired the University Homecoming and University Calendar committees, and served on the MEDAL Fund Scholarship Board. “I’ve enjoyed the smiles, the laughter, the tears of joy, the dinners, the quiet moments, the meetings, the concerts, the diverse peoples - even financial reports,” DiGuiseppe said. “It was a great ride, and now this chapter comes to a close. There are still ‘miles to go,’ and I wish Millersville well for the future, wherever it may take them.” DiGuiseppe’s influence will not fade after his departure on Friday, Sept. 25, as he has established the Steven A. DiGuiseppe ’82 Scholarship at Millersville University to support future generations of students. Individuals who would like to contribute may visit www.millersville.edu/give/make-a-gift.php.
