Penn Manor’s golfers improved to 14-1 last Monday at Four Seasons Golf Course where they suffered their first loss of the season. Despite Jesse Shue’s 75, the second lowest score of the day, the Comets were edged out by Warwick 321-322. Seb Elias (79), JP Radwanski (82) and Keegan Dings (86) rounded out Manor’s top five.
The Comets padded their win column, defeating Township (327), Cedar Crest (341), Catholic High (345) and Hempfield (349).
Two days later the Comets (18-2) fired a 325 but again, could not catch Warwick (305) but slipped past Cedar Crest (326). They also topped MT (333), LCHS (343) and Hempfield (346).
Shue’s 75 was one stroke off the low for the day. Dings moved into second with an 82, while Doyle (83) and Radwanski (85) rounded out the counters.
FIELD HOCKEY
Playing four games over a four day period, the field hockey team ran its winning streak to six straight. Sept. 10 they topped Donegal 3-1 with goals from Riley Robinson, Caity McGough and Avery Bradburn and on Saturday, with a pair of wins, came home with the Hershey Tournament trophy.
The Comets defeated Hershey 2-1 and then blanked Township 1-0 in overtime.
“The Township win was our second overtime win of the season,” said head coach Rachel Suter. “Then we beat Hershey on shootouts. The 1-1 tie after regulation and overtime was decided on a 1v1 with the goalie. A player starts on the 25 and has eight seconds to try to score. We had to do 13 shootouts to find a winner,” Suter explained. “We scored three (McGough, Robinson 2) and Hershey two.”
The Comets continued their winning ways last Monday, exploding for a season-high five goals in a night win at Cedar Crest (5-1). Robinson paced the attack with goals in the first and third quarters. Grace Gerner also scored in the first while Olivia Cox, with a second period score, put Manor in front 3-1 at the break. Both teams traded goals in the third before Malayna Kahl capped the scoring in the fourth quarter.
Robinson and Avery Bradburn scored first half goals last Wednesday and the Comets upended Township 2-0 to move to 7-0.
FOOTBALL
Senior quarterback Eli Warfel scored three touchdowns and junior linebacker Jimmy Keck recorded a sack as the Comets (2-1) topped Northeastern 21-9, Sept. 10.
Warfel gave the Comets a 7-0 lead in the first quarter with a oneyard keeper and Northeastern, out rushing the hosts 294-180, cut it to four with a 19-yard field goal in the second.
The Comets extended their lead in the third quarter when Warfel scrambled 63-yards to paydirt. The visitors responded early in the fourth quarter but the point after attempt was blocked, leaving Manor in front, 14-9.
Warfel, who finished with 103 yards on 13 carries and passed for 51 yards, picked up his final TD of the night one a one-yard keeper in the fourth and Peter Skiadas added his third PAT kick to cap the scoring.
TENNIS
The Comets suffered its second straight shutout, 4-0, at Cedar Crest Sept. 9. The match was cut short due to rain/lightening and Crest had already won four matches to seal Manor’s fate, who was without their No. 1, Catherine Rabatin (ankle).
At Ephrata last Monday, Rabatin worked a shutout at No. 1 and teamed with Shipley for an 8-1 doubles win and Manor’s only points in a 5-2 loss.
Tuesday the Comets notched their second win of the season, a 61 result at Solanco.
Rabatin teamed with Shipley for a shutout in doubles and went on to win No. 1 single 6-0, 6-0.
Autumn Kirkley and Lydia Meier took No. 2 doubles 8-4 and Kirkley added a No. 3 singles win.
Hutchinson, who also won No. 4 singles, and Daphne Eisenhauer capped doubles play with an 8-2 win.
BOYS’ SOCCER
It was a rough two days for the boys’ soccer team who suffered back-to-back shutouts Friday, Sept. 9 against visiting Hempfield (2-0) and at Carlisle (1-0) Saturday.
Then, behind Aidan Smith’s hat trick, the Comets posted their first section win last Tuesday at Cedar Crest, blanking the Falcons 5-0. Smith also assisted to Zach Erb and Leonid Medvedkin.
VOLLEYBALL
After a disappointing 3-2 loss to CV, the Comets fell in three straight (25-13, 25-18, 25-9) to visiting Hempfield Sept. 9.
Manor’s returning all-star, Cassidy McCollum, turned in a solid stat line with 3 kills, 2 aces and 12 digs. Emma Saylor dished out 8 assists, three of which resulted in Lezlie Nguyen (1 block) kills and Sophia Millhouse added 2 aces.
“Playing Hempfield is a litmus test to see how we would stack up against some of the toughest teams in the state,” said head coach Tim Joyce.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
The girls’ soccer team earned a 3-0 shutout at Hempfield Sept. 10, their first of the season, but came up short, 2-1, against visiting Carlisle one day later.
Lily Sugra, assisted by Kerrigan Thompson, Carly Keene, assisted by Caroline Hinkle, and Kelly Wall, assisted by Keene, provided the scoring punch against the Knights.
“It was a great all-around team effort,” said head coach Keith Renner.
Carlisle broke a 1-1 halftime tie with a second half goal that provided the victory. Keene, assisted by Thompson, provided the first half tally.
CROSS COUNTRY
Kaleb Kabajian and Jeremiah Hetrick finished second and third in a tri meet in Lebanon last Tuesday and came home with mixed results. The boys defeated the hosts 26-31 but lost to Warwick 25-32. Isaac Braegelman and Aidan Gerlach finished 9th and 10th respectively with Vinson Carter rounding out the top five in 29th place.
The girls lost to Warwick, who earned the top four places, 15-50 and to Lebanon 23-32. Ana Martin led the way in 11th place with Mackenzie Nafziger (12th) and Emma Cassel (13th) right behind. Zoe King placed 15th and Bethany Hetrick’s 17th place effort rounded out the counters.
