Historical society slates Fall Harvest Fest
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
The Conestoga Area Historical Society (CAHS), 51 Kendig Road, Conestoga, will hold its annual Fall Harvest Fest on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 24, from noon to 4 p.m. The free event will include demonstrations from a variety of craftspeople, activities for children and a baked goods sale.
The goal of the historical society’s yearly celebration is to offer the community an opportunity to learn about Conestoga’s history in an interactive setting. Docents of CAHS will be dressed in period-accurate attire, as they offer a glimpse into the simple lives of Conestoga’s early settlers. Demonstrations will take place throughout the day, featuring blacksmithing, carpentry, weaving, spinning and tin-making. Several children’s activities such as pumpkin painting will be offered during Fall Harvest Fest, and a rope-maker will fashion ropes for youngsters to take home.

Circle Legacy begins Native American series
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
For the first time in more than three years, Circle Legacy Center is offering a series of programs on the second Friday of every month. The goal of the series is to educate the community on the culture, history and traditions of Native Americans, as well as to raise awareness of modern issues. Each program will be hosted from 6 to 9 p.m. at Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster, 328 W. Orange St., and participants are encouraged to bring a food item to share during a
potluck dinner. Utensils, plates and cups will be provided. Each program will highlight a different topic that pertains to Native American communities. The series kicked off with a meeting on Sept. 8 to welcome new participants and returning members, and Circle Legacy Center shared updates about its upcoming projects and plans for the remainder of the year. The organization also provided information on Every Child Matters, a movement that seeks to raise awareness of the abuse of Native American children in residential

craftsmen and people who are dressed in the clothes of that time period,” said Jim Kauffman, a longstanding member of CAHS. “(Fall Harvest Fest) is an interactive way for people to engage with our area’s history.”
During the event, members of the Circle Legacy Center will have a table to offer information on Native American history and customs. The Circle Legacy Center often holds demonstrations for Fall Harvest Fest, which have included chanting exhibitions and fur displays in previous years. The organization’s goal with each demonstration is to provide spectators with an accurate portrayal of Conestoga’s first inhabitants and their culture.
Attendees of Fall Harvest Fest will be able to view the historical society’s collection of artifacts and items that have been recovered throughout the local community. CAHS’ collection includes multiple objects left by Native Americans and Colonial settlers, including petroglyphs that are believed to be more than 1,500 years old. When See Fall Harvest Fest pg 4

Donations may be dropped off in the driveway of the vineyard, and they will be distributed to the nonprofits after the

Church to display historical photographs
Historical photographs created by David H. Mellinger will be on display at the Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church of Creswell, of which Mellinger and his family were members, on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 23 and 24, from 1 to 4 p.m. Local photographer Scott Kriner will give a brief talk on Mellinger’s work and early photographic processes at 2 p.m. each day. Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church is located at 1165 Letort Road, Conestoga.
Mellinger was a prominent farmer and landowner in Creswell and took up photography as a hobby. He was active as a photographer from approximately 1897 to 1910,
and the images he created during this period were primarily of family members, friends and the local community. These glimpses into rural life in Lancaster County at the turn of the century surfaced when his daughter, Luella, sold the family’s rambling Victorian-era mansion in Creswell in 1986. Luella was aware that her father had pursued photography as a hobby, but she had never seen the images.
The glass plates were purchased at the sale by Kriner. There were no prints, only the glass plates. Kriner carefully cleaned and evaluated the plates and proceeded to make prints from the original plates in the same manner as

Safe Harbor Dam was being constructed on the Susquehanna River in 1932, the construction workers discovered the ancient Native American rock carvings. The State Museum of Pennsylvania recovered the petroglyphs and housed them in Harrisburg and transferred them to CAHS once it was established. In addition to the rock carvings, the CAHS collection includes the original door of the former Lancaster County jail.

room. The new structure was previously used by Manor Township as a pavilion, and the township gifted it to CAHS three years ago. Shortly after, the historical society received a $15,000 grant, and it decided to refurbish the pavilion. The structure sits adjacent to the CAHS museum, and the renovation project was completed in April. Several items are also included in the new display room, such as a wagon jack and bells that were worn by Conestoga wagon horses. For more information, visit www.pennmanor history.org.
Mellinger would have done.
Mellinger used high-quality equipment to practice his craft, but the process of loading and unloading light-sensitive glass plates for each exposure and carrying heavy cameras and lenses that required a large tripod made for a different experience than photographers have today. After taking the photographs, Mellinger would tote the loaded, exposed glass plates home to be unloaded in the dark and processed in three different chemical baths to permanently fix the images. Once dry, the images could be placed in contact with a sheet of light-sensitive photographic paper.
The upcoming display will
include both prints created by Kriner from the Mellinger plates along with some of the original glass plates.
There will also be a display sharing the history of Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church from 1834 to the present. The Evangelical Association started in a house on the Hershey Mann Farm, now the Frey Landfill. The group then moved its worship services to what became the Creswell Community Store; a brick church across the street, which has since been torn down; and its current location. Pictures and church artifacts will be on display. For more information, call 717-684-3931 and leave a message.

Circle Legacy Center was founded in 2007 by Victoria Valentine of Millersville, who also serves as the organization’s executive director. “I started out as an environmentalist, and I was always
interested in Native American culture,” Valentine said. “As I learned more about it, I had a vision to make a bridge between the community and the Native American people, not only to educate people but to raise awareness of their needs.”
Although Circle Legacy Center has no physical headquarters, it remains actively involved with various local organizations. The nonprofit frequently participates in events at Blue Rock Heritage Center in Washington Boro and the Conestoga Area Historical Society. Some Circle Legacy Center board members are also active in similar groups such as the Carlisle
Indian School Project, another nonprofit based in Conestoga. The project aims to build a heritage center and museum near the site of the original boarding school in Carlisle. For more information, search for “Circle Legacy Center” on Facebook.

Church plans polka Mass
Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2 W. Strawberry St., Lancaster, will hold its annual polka Mass on Sunday, Sept. 24, at 9 a.m. in the church sanctuary.
The church honors its anniversary yearly with a polka Mass under the direction of the Rev. Glenn Beard. The polka Mass combines the Lutheran liturgical worship service in a respectful way with popular waltz and polka tunes.
All are invited to share in the service of worship and praise, followed by fellowship time in the adjacent church parlor.
The church is located at the corner of Manor and West Strawberry streets in Lancaster, with parking available in the lot behind the church on Lafayette Street.

ling discount available.
Annie Ahm Hartley, the founder of Lancaster Modern Etiquette, was born and raised in the Dominican Republic and has lived and traveled extensively abroad. She observed that across various cultures, one universal element prevailed - kindness. This insight led her to realize that regardless of language or location, individuals with good manners, an open mind, kindness and courtesy have a greater chance of success.
Hartley is a certified etiquette expert with creden-
tials from two nationally acclaimed etiquette schools. She holds business and children’s etiquette certifications from The Etiquette Institute in St. Louis, Mo., and a children’s etiquette certification from The Charleston School of Protocol and Etiquette in Charleston, S.C.
Participants can register for the classes at www.lan casteretiquette.com. For more information about Lancaster Modern Etiquette and the upcoming classes, visit the website or contact Hartley at annie@lancastereti quette.com or 305-923-4483.

“I’m excited about the diversity, just the diversity in the types of events we have this season,” said Hoover. “It’s just got a nice flow. Some of the shows are stops on world tours; some are stops on United States tours. It’s on par with a lot of what other performing art centers do. I think audiences should expect to be wowed, especially if they come to an event they don’t usually buy a ticket for.”
Also featured in the series will be the Alejandro Brittes Quartet on Oct. 12; an International Piano Festival concert given by Tianxu An on Oct. 28; Soul Sanctuary: Religious Spirituals on Oct. 29; performances of “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” on select dates from Nov. 25 to Dec. 16; the male chorus Chanticleer on Nov. 29; a masterclass dance festival taught by a local choreographer on Jan. 13; a local choreographer’s dance festival and showcase on Jan. 13 and 14; Piercing Word’s performance of “The Gospel of Mark” on March 1

JLL announces president, board of directors
The Junior League of Lancaster (JLL) recently announced the appointment of Hannah Funk as president, as well as the incoming 2023-24 board of directors.
A native of Lancaster County, Funk is a 2007 graduate of Ephrata High School. She earned her Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Elizabethtown College in 2011 and participated in Semester at Sea through the University of Virginia during the summer of 2010. During the pandemic, she obtained her Paralegal Certificate from Villanova University. Funk also participated in Leadership Lancaster as part of the 2020 Core Class and currently serves as her class’s ambassador. She works remotely as the manager of sales operations and analytics for a unified communications company.
Funk joined the JLL as part of the fall 2015 provisional class. During the course of her eight-year JLL career, her executive leadership activities have included serving as the communications vice president, placement vice president, parliamentarian, and presidentelect. She has also served as a Run4Luck co-chair and a member-at-large for the House Programs and Membership Development committees.
In addition to Funk, fellow 2023-24 board members include Laura McGarry, president-elect; Anna Oot, recording secretary; Melissa Frill Esterly, parliamentarian; Michelle Weaver, treasurer; Erin Sell, community impact vice president; Brittany Fellin, communications vice president; Ashley
Noel, fund development vice president; Sandra Schiffli-Salerno, membership development vice president; Meg Lefever Titter, nominating vice president; Erin Derstler, placement vice president; and Debbie Havert, sustainer chair.
As of June 2022, JLL’s current initiative is nutrition insecurity, a newly adopted issuebased community impact (IBCI) focus area, to combat the lack of access to healthy and nutrient-rich food and improve nutrition knowledge and dietary habits across all populations in Lancaster County. Members collected 1,500 manual can openers for the Lancaster Power Packs Project, and they planted and continue to tend a community garden at the Boys and Girls Club of Lancaster’s Jack Walker Clubhouse in downtown Lancaster.
The JLL will celebrate its 100th anniversary in November of this year and will mark the achievement with several commemorative events throughout the year. The centennial jubilee will conclude on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at Fulton Theatre, where active and sustaining members and community partners will celebrate and pay tribute to the JLL’s impact and look forward to the coming years of service to the Lancaster community.
Operating on a fiscal year, the 2023-24 League year began on July 1 and will conclude on Sunday, June 30, 2024.

Boys invited to learn about Scouting
The Boy Scouts of America’s Pennsylvania Dutch Council invites local youths to learn about Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA at an event on Tuesday, Sept. 26, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Bethel Evangelical Congregational Church, 3716 Main St., Conestoga.
The event will offer an
opportunity for boys in kindergarten through fifth grade to learn about Cub Scout Pack 146 and for boys ages 11 to 17 to learn about Troop 146. Attendees will be able to join Scouting. Anyone who cannot attend the event is welcome to join at any time.
During the school year, Pack 146 will meet on Tuesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. at Bethel EC Church. Den-level meetings will be determined by the dens. Cub Scouts will have opportunities to participate in STEM activities, shooting sports, hiking, camping, skits, service projects and more.
Cub Scouting seeks to nurture leadership and character
growth, strengthen families, help children develop interests and skills, provide adventure and offer opportunities for fellowship. The program is volunteer-driven and encourages parent involvement.

Troop 146 will meet on Tuesdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Bethel EC Church. In Scouts BSA, service, community engagement and leadership development become increasingly important parts of the program as youths lead their own activities and work their way toward attaining Scouting’s highest rank,
Eagle Scout. The program often includes outdoor activities, such as camping, hiking and fishing.
To learn more about Troop 146, contact Frey.
Scouting employees and volunteers have submitted all background checks required by Pennsylvania Act 15. The Scouting programs are not affiliated with the Penn Manor School District.
