Saddlebag Riders To Support Wounded Warrior Project By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Nate Brubaker recently joined the Saddlebag Riders, a team of Motorcyclists for Jesus Ministries, after reading a newspaper article about the group. “It said, ‘If you love Jesus and you love motorcycles, come on out,’” Brubaker recalled. “My wife and I will take any opportunity to meet people. She said I need to go do this, and I agreed.” Both Brubaker and his wife, Jessica, are motorcycle enthusiasts, and they have participated in several events hosted by the Saddlebag Riders. They also plan to be part of the next activity, which will be a Wounded Warrior Project fundraising ride on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 2 to 5 p.m. No rain date has been set. Dennis will lead a discussion of various types on depression and how to deal with them. Dennis is a licensed professional counselor who has experience in helping individuals and families work through mental health issues. She incorporates a faith-based perspective in her clinical work, using an approach that combines genetic, cognitive, social, and cultural factors in assessing behavior. Participants will learn about how to moderate the effects of depression through mindfulness meditation, loving kindness, cognitive therapy, and breathing. A light breakfast will be served in the Family Life Center before the presentation. The event is expected to wrap up at approximately 11 a.m. Admission is free. Each Wednesday gathering runs from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and includes breakfast refreshments, praise and worship, a video teaching session, and small group discussion. There is also a prayer group that meets during the morning activities. In contrast to previous years, just one course of study will be offered this fall. “Sermon on the Mount” by Jen Wilkin is an indepth exploration of the words of Jesus in Matthew 5-7 with the aim of understanding the message as it was originally given and heard. These three chapters include some of the most familiar passages in all of Scripture: the Beatitudes, the Lord’s Prayer, the Golden Rule, and many other teachings that are even recognized by popular culture, but in fragmented form. With an overarching theme of kingdom citizenship, in this section, Jesus delivers a well-ordered, cohesive message that challenges listeners to think differently about what it means to be His follower. This study is an invitation to take a figurative seat on the mountainside and learn from Jesus, just as His disciples did. Studies at COPS are selected so that all women can learn together whether they are completely new to Bible study or highly advanced. Wilkin teaches practical methods for studying the Bible, which are incorporated in the daily workbook lessons. She encourages women to learn everything they possibly can from the text before consulting other sources. “We have not offered a Jen Wilkin study before,” said Jennifer Hatch, an administrative leader for the group. “We were initially drawn by the title and a desire to understand what Jesus taught in His sermon, and then it impressed us to see the author’s commitment to Bible literacy and promoting good study habits that can be applied to any reading of the Bible.” For anyone interested in learning more about the fall study and ministry at Change of Pace South, the women will have an informational booth at the Solanco Fair, set for Wednesday through Friday, Sept. 19 to 21. “This is something new for us,” Hatch remarked. “Our studies are usually in full swing during the fair, but the timing worked out for us to participate this year. We have a really neat group of ladies who are sincere in extending their friendship and hospitality.

As far as Torah Bontrager can tell, she is the first Amish person to graduate from an Ivy League school. Bontrager’s path to Columbia University was fraught with pain, however, and she shared her story in her memoir, “An Amish Girl in Manhattan: Escaping at Age 15, Breaking All the Rules, and Feeling Safe Again,” which was published in 2017. Bontrager’s experiences led to the formation of the Amish Heritage Foundation (AHF), which is dedicated to advocating for people inside and outside the Amish Church - what is known in non-Amish societies as “Old Order” - and making the transition smoother for those who have left or wish to leave. “We’re the only nonsectarian institution that advocates for Amish people and engages their issues and educates the general public,” Bontrager commented. “The three overarching initiatives of the foundation are education, femaledriven entrepreneurship/leadership, and health and well-being.” Along with AHF board member Elam Zook, who describes himself as noncompliant Amish, Bontrager will host what they hope will become an annual conference, “Disrupting History: Reclaiming Our Amish Story,” on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 28 and 29, at Franklin & Marshall College, 415 Harrisburg Ave., Lancaster. The conference will be packed full of opportunities for attendees to explore issues related to Amish culture. Galen Guengerich, who grew up Mennonite, will give the keynote address on Sept. 29. In his book “God Revised: How Religion Must Evolve in a Scientific Age,” Guengerich asserts that the first step toward being set free is discovering where one belongs. The conference will also include speakers who have left other religions, a sexual assault survivor and plaintiff in a landmark Amish case, and a panel of minority entrepreneurs including those with Amish, Mennonite, Navajo, Jewish, and Muslim backgrounds. The Sept. 28 session will close with an uplifting live music performance by rhythm-and-blues singer-songwriter Tanisha Avent in the second-floor lounge of Tellus360, 24 E. King St., Lancaster. Scouting Recruitment Campaign Set The local council of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is a running a campaign to recruit Cub Scouts in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. Through the campaign, dubbed “Count Me In/Hooked on Scouting,” all youths ages 6 to 11 who join Scouts as new Cubs through Monday, Oct. 1, will receive a new fishing pole to keep. Also, on Saturday, Sept. 29, the council will hold fishing derbies at several locations, including Muddy Run Park, 172 Bethesda Church Road West, Holtwood, and J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation, 2 Scout Lane, Newmanstown. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., attendees may sign in and learn the basics of fishing. They may then fish until dusk if they wish. A local radio station will be on-site at each venue. Each derby will be a community event for parents and youths to get hands-on fishing experience. from pg 1 Millersville University will present “Night Train 57 - A Sensory-Friendly Folk Opera” on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 3 p.m. as part of the Family Fun Fest series. The show will take place in Clair Performance Hall in the Winter Center, 60 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville. It is the first of five Family Fun Fest events this season. “Night Train 57” features sing-along music performed by Grammy Award-winner Dan Zanes, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Claudia Eliaza, and percussionist Yuriana Sobrino. Zanes’ repertoire includes sea shanties, English music hall songs, North American and West Indian folk music, early rock ‘n’ roll music, and originals. His music has all been featured various television shows, including “Sesame Street.” Eliaza is an internationally acclaimed Haitian-American songstress who has performed in venues from Carnegie Hall to the Jazz Philharmonic Hall in St. Petersburg, Russia. A board-certified music therapist, Eliaza directs the music therapy program at the Community Music Center of Boston. In 2016, she began collaborating with Zanes on a series of sensory-friendly programs for people of all ages that the two plan to continue indefinitely. Sobrino spent her childhood drumming on a bucket on the roof of her home in Mexico. She moved to Mexico City to study music and was later awarded a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music, where she received a degree in jazz performance. She then spent time teaching children in Newburyport, Mass. The show is open to people of all ages and sensory levels. ASL interpretation will be provided. The 42nd annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction will be held at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21 and 22, beginning at 9 a.m. The auction, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern Districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided more than $15 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally. Funds raised by the auction not only pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims, but also support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year. In the past few years, funds and volunteers from the auction have helped immediate relief efforts and long-term cleanup and rebuilding from hurricanes in Florida and Louisiana to a tornado in Campbelltown. The event will include a general auction, a children’s auction, a quilt auction, a themed basket auction, a silent auction, a heifer auction, a coin auction and two pole barn auctions. The two-day event may have as many as five auctions happening simultaneously. Children’s activities this year will include the children’s auction, specializing in new
items for children to be bid on only by children. A Children’s Store will offer quality used items at reasonable prices, and a balloon artist will create balloon animals for children. Also available for children, weather permitting, will be free barrel train rides, pony rides for a nominal donation, face painting and a concert by Phredd. The event will include a car show and a 5K Run for Relief, as well as an area for vendors of crafts and art. A farmers market will offer fresh produce and baked goods, including pies, made-on-site Amish doughnuts, soft pretzels and pizza. New this year will be a tractor show and Artisan Alley, located in the East Hall, which is a collection of gourmet food eateries and juried artisans. It will feature specialty coffees, German pastries, Thai rolled ice cream treats, pickles, artisan bread, specialty nuts and pots. The meet-and-greet will take place from 5 to 6 p.m. Local authors Carol A. Park, J. Arthur Moore, Paul Gerhard Tittel, Howie Robins and Dr. Garfield Greene will participate. Copies of the authors’ books will be available for purchase and signing. The event is free and open to the public. Park will be present with her book, “Banebringer,” the first book of the Heretic Gods trilogy. Moore is the author of “Journey Into Darkness,” “Blake’s Story,” “Revenge and Forgiveness” and “Summer of Two Worlds.” The books give young readers a glimpse into the lives of enlisted boys during the American Civil War. More than 200,000 boys age 17 and under served, the youngest officially enlisted being 8 years old. Tittel is the author of “Grace Will Lead Me Home” and “Never Alone.” His books tell of family members’ experiences living in East Germany during World Wars I and II. Tittel was an adolescent during World War II and
the Soviet occupation of East Germany. Robins is the author of “7 Missing Socks,” a picture book that depicts a memorable event during the author’s childhood. The book has illustrations by Reenie Chase. Greene is the author of “Ordinary People,” a book about how God became real in the lives of some interesting people and how those lives were changed. Additionally, at 6 p.m. Park will lead the final class in a three-session writing series, Telling Stories: From Idea to Publication. The third session, “The Road to Publication,” will focus on how to get a polished manuscript published. Park will compare traditional publishing and independent publishing, also known as selfpublishing. Topics will include the pros and cons of these two options, how to decide which option one should pursue based on their personal goals, and how to pursue the chosen option. The African Festival will conclude with an African flag parade. To celebrate African culture in the Lancaster community, local organizers and host Rafiki Africa Foundation, in partnership with the City of Lancaster, will host the 10th annual African Festival at Binns Park, 120 N. Queen St., Lancaster, on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 1 to 7 p.m. The cross-cultural event will feature music, food, fashion, stories, and cultural education. The festival will feature authentic cuisine from local African food entrepreneurs, vendors selling Africanthemed goods, authentic African arts and crafts, local nonprofits that work in Africa, culturally themed children’s activities, African dance and drum performances, and a fashion show. The day will provide an opportunity to connect with nonprofits, small business owners, young professionals, Lancaster County school students, college students, immigrant families, and Lancaster county families. The food vendors present will be Africans who call Lancaster County home. Food vendors will offer cuisine from Eastern Africa, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Liberia. Performances will include the N’bonye’ West African Dance and Drum Ensemble, Tammi’s African Drum Circle, Samburu and Maasai of Kenya Singing and Dance, Kenyan and Congolese youth groups, and Infamous Unstoppables Drill Team and Drum Squad. African artifacts will be available for purchase, including arts, crafts, clothing, and jewelry. Specific African countries will
be featured at booths. Attendees will be able to interact with Africans from those countries and learn about their culture. A photo booth will be set up for attendees to take personal and group photos with African attire. The event will close with an African flag parade. The African Festival is a cooperative effort of Rafiki Africa’s founders, Roger Godfrey and Dorothy Dulo, along with community members including Zipporah Ngarama, Emerson Sampaio, Kevin Ressler, Thomas Sengeh, and Mardia Gibson, all of whom represent an African country and culture. Rafiki Africa Foundation is local nonprofit that works in Kenya to build sustainable communities and eradicate poverty by partnering with local rural communities to empower them with resources, education, and training. Rafiki Africa also gives an opportunity for Lancaster County community to connect with its work in Kenya and brings African cultural awareness and education to Lancaster. Picnic In The Fields Slated Homefields, 150 Letort Road, Millersville, will host the sixth annual Picnic in the Fields event on Sunday, Sept. 23, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The gates will open at 10:30 a.m. The outdoor event is designed as a family-friendly, accessible fundraiser. The all-you-can-eat catered meal will include vegan choices, as well as guest farm contributions from Homefields and Village Crest Farm. Bobbi Carmitchell and friends will provide music. On the defensive end, Josh Gibson blocked a field goal late with 29 seconds left in the first half as Township took a 21-0 lead at the half. The Comets also did a decent job in holding Township’s running game to 126 rushing yards. VOLLEYBALL Picking up a 3-2 thriller over Section Three’s Ephrata last Monday, the Comets improved to 2-2 overall. In a match that see-sawed backand-fourth, the Mounts pulled out identical 25-23 wins in the first and third sets while the visitors fought from behind, winning the second and fourth sets with identical 25-21 scores. With the match on the line, Manor used momentum from their fourth set win to steal the game with a 15-11 final set. “The whole match was about the serve and received battle,” said head coach Tim Joyce. “Both teams had their share of errors, but in the end we were able to string together a few more earned points.” Shayna Warfel’s 16 kill effort at the net outmuscled a nine kill effort by Ephrata’s Kendall Wales. Kailey Stoner
aided Warfel’s attack with 31 assists while Elizabeth Kubicar contributed to the offense with 4 aces. Warfel not only sparked the action at the net but, along with Maddie Henry, scrambled for 18 digs while Lexington Sangrey put up a pair of blocks. “Our team-wide defense kept us afloat,” said Joyce. “Kendra Weiss and Jordan Schucker added 17 and 16 digs respectively. And our Estonian exchange student, Marilyn Keernik, subbed in and added some height to our block and picked up a few points. “We put together some good serving runs in the fifth set that swung the momentum our way,” he added. Thursday’s outing against Cedar Crest mirrored Tuesday’s win only this time the Comets came up short 3-2. Manor controlled the first set 25-13 but the Falcons regrouped and stole set two, 25-23. The visitors rose to the challenge with a solid 25-20 third set only to suffer a second two point loss, 26-24 in set four. That momentum carried the hosts to a 15-6 final set and the win. Warfel recorded a game-high 17 kills and five aces to lead the offense while Schucker collected a game-high 18 digs and Kubicar put up two blocks. BOYS’ SOCCER With eight corners and seven shots on goal, Warwick’s boys’ soccer team
kept the Comets busy on defense last Monday night in Lititz. The result was a second half shutout and a 3-1 win in the Section One opener. Behind Hunter Enck’s first half goal, the Comets broke in front early. Warwick countered in the 36th minute sending both teams into intermission deadlocked. “Hunter took a nice pass, got past some people and had a great shot on goal,” lauded head coach Paul Taylor. “But overall, we weren’t aggressive to the ball and didn’t apply much offensive pressure. We had moments of very good possession but not enough. The boys know they are better than how they played today.” In a defensive battle on the turf Thursday night, the Comets dropped a hard-fought 1-0 OT final against hosting Cedar Crest. Both teams worked five corners and Manor held a slim 7-6 edge in shots but couldn’t find the back of the net. The Comets’ Fahri Sivri recorded five saves but Crest’s Ryan Bernard tallied the game-winner in the 96th minute.
TENNIS After four straight home matches, the tennis team took advantage of some dry weather on Thursday and battled Warwick on the road. But the sunshine wasn’t enough as the Warriors dropped the Comets 7-0. Despite the loss, the Comets made a strong showing in doubles play with Hannnah Smith and Alayna Adams battling Warwick’s No. 2 team to a heart-breaking 9-7 result. Almost as strong at No. 3, Liv Chipriano and Ava Ginder put the Warriors to the test in an 8-5 loss. Chipriano carried that play into singles action where she secured the most games for the Comets in a 6-1, 6-3 loss at No. 4. Also in singles, Julia Ward lost 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1, Smith worked a 6-1, 6-2 loss at No. 2 and Audrey Jachimowicz fell short 6-1, 6-0. Earlier in the week, the Comets dropped a shortened (due to weather) 4-0 result against Hempfield. Nursing Program Holds Dedication Of Hands The division of nursing at Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences held its second annual Dedication of Hands ceremony on Aug. 22. All nursing students were invited to take part in the event, which stresses the significance of a nurse’s hands as symbols of the holistic care nurses provide to a patient’s mind, body and spirit. The Dedication of Hands is a new ceremony for Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences nursing students, replacing the historical tradition of capping ceremonies, during which novice students would receive their cap prior to attending their first clinical experience and returning students would receive a stripe indicating their program year. During the ceremony, faculty members performed the washing and drying of hands, symbolically uniting faculty and students in the profession of nursing. Faculty member Kay Buchanan and Sage Olnick, Class of 2005, were set to offer keynote remarks during three sessions offered throughout the day. The legacy of nursing care was celebrated through the inclusion of two special guests. Cassie Kohr, a student in the three-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, attended with Mary Coldren Kurian, a 1936 graduate of the school, then the Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing. Now 103 years old, Mary is believed by the college to be its

oldest living alumna. Kurian enjoyed a long career at Lancaster General Hospital as a nurse anesthetist, retiring in 1980. Kohr and Kurian met at Homestead Village in Lancaster, where Kohr works part time and Kurian has lived since 1996. While nursing education and practice have changed dramatically since Kurian entered
the field, the two women have bonded over their shared devotion to the profession. After learning that Kurian’s 1936 class photo had been misplaced during a move, Kohr worked with the Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences’ office of alumni relations to find a replacement, which she gave to Mary as a Christmas gift last year.

Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society will host a book signing at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25, with Sherry Gore and Sheila Petre, both featured authors in the new book, “Homespun: Amish and Mennonite Women in Their Own Words.” It will take place at the Martindale Mennonite Fellowship Center, 352 Martindale Road, Ephrata. Gore is the author of seven books, including “Simply Delicious Amish Cooking,” “Me, Myself, and Pie,” and “The Plain Choice.” Gore was featured in the National Geographic Channel’s “Amish: Out of Order,” and has appeared on NBC
Daytime, the Today Show, Mr. Food Test Kitchen, and more. Gore, who is Beachy Amish, is a resident of Sarasota, Fla. Petre lives with her husband and their seven children in south central Pennsylvania. They are members of Washington-Franklin Mennonite Conference. They will be twisting and winding, but it will be a leisurely ride,” he said. The ride will return to the church at about 3 p.m., where riders and other guests may enjoy a picnic of pulled pork, hot dogs, chips, and beverages in the pavilion. Folks may attend the picnic even if they do not go on the ride. No prices have been set for the ride or the meal, but donations will be accepted for the Wounded Warrior Project. “It’s a passion for a lot of us,” Saddlebag Riders secretary Gail Moore said, explaining why the team is raising money for the Wounded Warrior Project.

The Indian Organization of Lancaster County (IOLC) will host its annual Namaste celebration on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Millersville University’s Student Memorial Center, 21 S. George St., Millersville. A cultural program will be held at about 2 p.m. in the multipurpose room. Founded in 2007, the IOLC was created to facilitate and promote cultural and philanthropic activities in Lancaster County. The Namaste event has been designed as a hands-on cultural experience, with plenty of things to taste, see, and do. At arts and crafts stations representing different regions of the Indian subcontinent, children and adults will be able to discover a world of creativity and expression while learning about a different ethnicity. One activity that has been highly popular at previous Namaste celebrations is the decorating of diyas - clay lamps - that signify hope, good will, and knowledge. Chess tournaments, poster sessions, a T-shirt design station, and a henna artist will keep visitors entertained and engaged. Additionally, “Cirque de Bollywood” will showcase Indian music and dance in combination with circus acts, and vendors will offer a colorful array of clothing, jewelry, and décor items for a bazaar-style shopping experience.
Indian food, dance, and crafts will be featured at the annual Namaste celebration that the Indian Organization of Lancaster County will host at Millersville University on Sept. 22. A wide variety of cuisine will be available for purchase at the event. Visitors will be greeted by a display of roadside snacks that can be found throughout India, reminiscent of the teeming streets of Old Delhi or the lanes of the remote countryside. Chefs will prepare vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals with exotic spices, herbs, and roots in front of guests. South Indian fare will be featured this year as well. Just as in Italy cuisine is
divided between north and south, cooking styles and dishes differ between northern and southern India. There is no cost to attend the Namaste celebration, but participation in some of the activities will have a nominal

The official opening night program will start at 6:30 p.m. in the Grater Memorial Park amphitheater, with local radio personality Casey Allyn serving as master of ceremonies. The program will feature remarks by local dignitaries. A laser light show will be set to music by Southern rock band Mountain Road, and a time capsule will be created. In the case of rain, this event will take place in the Ephrata High School auditorium. Additional activities, set for Tent City and the amphitheater, will include free ice cream samples, face painting, street magic, Sneakers the Clown, free balloons and coloring books, a petting zoo, and more. Cylo will be on-site, and Ephrata American Legion Post 429 will be set up near the Eicher Arts Center, where American flags will be given away while supplies last. The Ephrata Area Farmers Association tent will feature a barbecue pork chop dinner on Sept. 25. Food will be available from
5 p.m. until sold out, and meals will include a baked potato with butter and sour cream, a roll, butter, applesauce, and a beverage. Meals may be purchased at the door. Parade night will be Wednesday, Sept. 26. The parade will include about 125 bands, floats, and groups. It will feature performances by the 265-member Liberty High School Grenadier Band, Millford Mill Academy marching band of Baltimore, the Philadelphia Eagles Pep Band, South Philadelphia String Band, and Uptown String Band. Local high school bands from Ephrata, Manheim Township, Cocalico, Solanco, Garden Spot, Octorara, and Conrad Weiser are slated to participate, as well. The parade will step off at 7 p.m., weather permitting. For the past 25 years, Randy and Betsy Leinbach have helped to organize the parade. The Leinbachs have volunteered at the fair for 46 years.

Former secretary of housing and urban development Julian Castro will speak at CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health’s public event at the Ware Center on Oct. 23. An optional dinner and reception will precede the program. his passion for improving the lives of individuals and families in the communities he has served. Castro served under President Barack Obama as the 16th secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) from 2014 to 2017. He oversaw 8,000 employees and a budget of $46 billion. Before serving as secretary, Castro was mayor of San Antonio, Texas. In March 2010, Castro was named to the World Economic Forum’s list of Young Global Leaders. Later that year, Time Magazine placed him on its 40 Under 40 list of rising stars in American politics. Previously, Castro served as a member of the San Antonio City Council and was known for becoming San Antonio’s youngest councilman in 2001. He also
became the first Hispanic person to deliver a keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in 2012. The 100th Ephrata Fair will run from Tuesday, Sept. 25, through Saturday, Sept. 29. Many events have been added to celebrate 100 years of the fair. On Sunday, Sept. 23, at 2 p.m., there will be a Welcome Home Ceremony at the Winters Leadership Memorial at Veterans Plaza, 29 E. Fulton St. The ceremony will pay tribute to heroes with guest speakers Gen. Tom Hobbins and local author Larry Alexander, a wreath-laying with the Red Rose Honor Guard, and bagpipe music. In the case of rain, this event will take place at Ephrata Pioneer Fire Company banquet hall. The 100th Ephrata Fair Community Celebration Opening Night will take place on Sept. 25. Wally Calderon, artistic director with Servant Stage Company, admits that there is an element of preconception in staging “Titanic,â€? the 1997 musical with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and a book by Peter Stone. “There is no surprise ending,â€? said Calderon of the musical that has been on his shortlist of shows for some time. Calderon loves the show because of its “character-driven depictionâ€? of the historical events and the stories it tells that draw audience members into the story. “(Audience members grow) attached to the historical figures involved,â€? said Calderon. “That’s the magic of the show ‌ the power of the story.â€? Calderon is working with Servant Stage executive director Jonathan Bauer to bring the show to the stage in partnership with Lancaster Bible College (LBC) at the Good Shepherd Chapel, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, for two weekends in September. “Titanicâ€? will run on Fridays, Sept. 21 and 28, at 7 p.m.; Saturdays, Sept. 22 and 29, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sundays, Sept. 23 and 30, at 2 and 7 p.m. Calderon noted that the ensemble piece tells many stories rather than one story. “You are hearing every angle of the events that are happening as they’re happening,â€? he said. “You get a true feel for what it was like in third class and first class and among the officers and for the crew and second class ‌ relationships
between couples and what (individual) objectives and agendas are,� said Calderon. “Titanic� has been one of Bauer’s favorites as well. “(The show) swept the Tonys, (winning) best musical, score, book, orchestration,� said Bauer, who added that the show is seldom staged because of its large cast of nearly 70 and its musical requirements. “To do it justice, it has got to have a full orchestra and a minimum of 40 incredible voices,� said Bauer. The show is musically demanding, featuring about 30 musical numbers. “The music is an integral part of the storytelling,� said Calderon. “Every scene is underscored with a theme or (musical) dynamics to make the audience feel what they’re supposed to feel.� Calderon added that the opening number, which is nearly 15 minutes long, is used as an introduction. “You meet the characters. You see the classes boarding. You see the crew assemble, and (the song) ends with the ship setting sail.� During Act 1, musical numbers are used to tell the stories of the cast members, delving into their backgrounds, hopes, and dreams. “What a Remarkable Age This Is,� is sung by the first-class passengers on the promenade deck, followed by “Lady’s Maid,� a song that describes the hopes of third class passengers coming to America. Other standout songs include “The Telegraph Song� and “The

Singers are invited to sign up now to participate in one of two choirs that will perform during a community Christmas concert hosted by SLC Community Choirs on Dec. 1. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Solanco Education Foundation. be joined in the concert by the Solanco High School jazz band and chorale. All proceeds from the event will support the Solanco Education Foundation (SEF), which funds numerous teacher grants and student scholarships each year. Hess related that her children attend fifth grade and kindergarten at Solanco schools, and she teaches private piano and voice lessons to families in the district. As a result, she is aware of the foundation and the work it does. Hess noted that the choirs have hosted

Southern Lancaster County (SLC) Community Choirs will host a community Christmas concert on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. at Solanco High School, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville. While readers are welcome to put the event on their calendars, director Rebecca Hess is announcing the performance several months in advance because she is recruiting vocalists to be part of the choirs that will perform that night. “Singers are invited from the Solanco community and beyond,” Hess said. “The mass choir will include singers in grade nine through adult, while a children’s choir will involve students in grades four through eight.” Hess noted that interested singers should be able to read music or learn parts on their own with the assistance of rehearsal tracks, which will be provided. There will be a number of rehearsals, the dates of which are being confirmed. There is a cost to participate, but part of the fee will be refunded after the sheet music is returned following the concert.
