YWCA Institute Helps Fight Racism Through Education BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
According to YWCA Lancaster training coordinator and abolitionist educator Adam Hosey, financial hardship will not be a barrier to participating in upcoming Racial Equity Institute (REI) sessions. “One of our guiding principles is that we will turn no one away for financial reasons as long as they are willing to put in the time to do the work,” Hosey explained. “This is why we have shifted from a defined cost to a suggested donation structure.” For more than 20 years, YWCA Lancaster has consistently offered REI classes, which were created for YWCA USA by Cultural Bridges to Justice in the late 1990s. Within the last few months, however, the program has been updated, reimagined, and reformatted in response to the current national dialogue and the health concerns of COVID-19. The REI program now includes 12 hours
of in-person training, with approximately two hours of online participation, during a five-day period. Training sessions have been scheduled for Monday, Sept. 21, to Friday, Sept. 25; Saturday, Oct. 17, to Saturday, Oct. 24; and Monday, Nov. 16, to Friday, Nov. 20. In-person classes will meet at the YWCA Lancaster, 110 N. Lime St., Lancaster, in socially distanced classrooms. “While the core of our workshop remains the same, we are constantly updating materials and approaches to meet the moment,” Hosey said. The training sessions are open to anyone who wants to address racism, sexism, and other forms of oppression in themselves and their community, Hosey said. Offering REI sessions is one way that YWCA Lancaster demonstrates its commitment to advocating against the oppression that many groups and individuals endure.

1957. According to The Conversation, Don Featherstone designed the afront to homeowner associations for Union Products, which sold them in pairs for only $2.76, to coincide with Americans’ fascination with Caribbean music and culture. By 1985, Tucker Plastics Inc. had gotten in on the fad as Canada’s only manufacturer of pink flamingos, producing more than 100,000 sets for distribution in Canada and the United States. The Chicago Tribune reported that Tucker Plastics’ sales of lawn flamingos were up 35% that year and called it a comeback after a lull in the 1960s and 1970s. Flamingos were commonly spotted in upscale boutiques on anything from jewelry to sunglasses. Young professionals appeared to be leading the trend, the Tribune asserted. Thirty-five years later, flamingos are still plentiful. Lowe’s describes its lawn ornament - $7.98 for a single bird as “a timeless alternative to everyday garden couture.” Quarryville resident Kimberly

As Shank’s friends and family picked up on her affinity for flamingos, they started gifting her with items. She’s accumulated door hangings, signs, bedsheets, hats, headbands, shirts, and other ephemera. Last year, Shank’s sister adopted a flamingo for her through the World Wildlife Fund. This year, Shank’s mother gifted her with a flamingo-themed face mask. Shank cheerfully sports the wearable items in public. “My hope is that it gives somebody else a smile,” Shank commented. “A group of flamingos is (called) a flamboyance. I just find that fun. The spirit of it is fitting.” News from the Philadelphia Zoo this summer has had flamingo fans smiling. A flamingo chick hatched on July 12, the first of its species to hatch at the zoo in more than two decades. In a public vote, the chick was named Flaco, the Spanish word for “skinny,”

Shank developed an interest in flamingos about 10 years ago. “I was out with my mom, and we were talking about being silly and going over the top. I made some joke about doing some yard flamingo display,” Shank recalled. “My family has a sense of humor. We would randomly put flamingos at each other’s places.” Shank pranked family members by placing a giant cardboard flamingo in their shower while they were on vacation so that it greeted them when they pulled back the curtain to bathe. Another time, Shank pulled up to her house after a long day at work only to see a glow-in-thedark flamingo clearly visible in her bay window. “And then we discovered they’re really cool birds. It went from a practical joke to a learning experience to an all-out party,” Shank said. National Pink Flamingo Day is observed on June 23. Shank and her family typically host a party, complete with themed games. Past activities have included “toss the hula hoop around the yard flamingo,” cro-

This year, the American Heart Association (AHA) has changed the format of the Lancaster Heart Walk. Instead of coming together for a one-day event, participants from across Lancaster County can join the Heart Walk by walking wherever they are any time during the month of September. The Lancaster Division of the AHA has named 12-year-old Titus Lingenfelter of Lancaster as the 2020 Lancaster Heart Walk Heart Hero. When Titus’ parents, Jerry and Robyn Lingenfelter, were expecting him 12 years ago, it took two ultrasounds to confirm that he had a critical congenital heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot. After he was born, he spent just days in the NICU before being sent home. Just eight weeks after entering the world, Titus underwent a life-saving surgery. While another surgery is in his future, Titus sees his doctors regularly and has been cleared to participate in regular activities, such as soccer. Titus and his family will

As its name suggests, “Landscape Painting Plus� will encourage oil and acrylic painters to focus on landscape and incorporating figures, animals, and more into their art.

It has been 10 years since Providence Church members Jeff and Terri Swope became accidental missionaries. Jeff grew up in Haiti, the son of missionaries, and in 2008, he returned to the Caribbean island nation to use his experience in the construction industry to build an orphanage. “They didn’t have a plan for the older kids, so we went back (in 2010) and started a home for the older boys,” Terri recalled. The Swopes didn’t intend to create an official organization, but people heard about their efforts and wanted to contribute to the cause, so they formed CrossRoads Mission Haiti and filed for nonprofit status in 2011. The organization’s outreach has grown from there to include church plants, a feeding program, school sponsorships, and medical clinics. “When we started our first church, it was for our young men who were orphaned. There was a stigma around them, so we wanted (to establish) a church that they would feel comfortable going to,” Terri said. CrossRoads Mission Haiti also supports already existing congregations. “Our heart is really in the mountains, in places where you can only get there on foot. Now we have six churches under our leadership,” she added. “Our church plants are to continue the Great Commission of training and equipping our pastors so they can, in turn, minister to their members and give them hope in Jesus Christ.” The objective of the school sponsorships and feeding program is to protect and preserve families. This seems to be a new outlook in Haiti, Terri noted. “Instead of concentrating on orphanages, organiza-

tions are promoting family preservation and helping with programs to keep families together.” “Orphanage” is a misnomer, as many of the residents are children relinquished to the institutions by their families in hope of a better life. “Parents simply cannot provide, because jobs are lacking, (so) they don’t have the means to provide food or pay for schooling,” Terri explained. “Our Haitian director brings the needs of the people before us so we can help alleviate some of the financial burden of those in poverty, so the families can stay together and the children be raised by parents.” Until this year, the Swopes regularly visited Haiti, often taking skilled workers or medical personnel with them. The Haitian director identified areas where the teams could host medical clinics. Due to COVID-19 and civil unrest, Haiti is under a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” warning, so the Swopes have not been able to visit. However, they are still able to send money for the school and feeding program, albeit at an increased cost. CrossRoads Mission Haiti always hosts a buffet dinner fundraiser on the last Sunday in September at C.R. Lapp’s Family Restaurant, 101 Fite Way, Quarryville. This year, the fundraiser will be held on Sunday, Sept. 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., but due to COVID-19 and the restaurant’s being unable to open fully, the meal will instead be offered as a takeout dinner. A price has been set for the dinners, with each ticket receiving ham, green beans, a baked potato, applesauce, a roll, and a whoopie pie. “It’s not just your basic ham. There’s a distinct taste to it. It’s really good,” Terri commented. She noted that the meals will be distributed drive-through style. Terri noted that she’s a bit nervous about trying something new, but she is excited about the event. “(Restaurant owner) Christy Lapp has been wonderful. He wanted a way for (the fundraiser) to keep going,” Terri said. No fundraising goal has been set. “God takes care of that,” she said. “We have a great community and great support in this community.” Tickets for the dinner may be ordered in advance by visiting https://crossroadshaiti.org/ benefit-dinner or by calling J.L. Encounter Church, 300 Hideaway Drive, Quarryville, has held an annual World of Wheels car show for six years. 2020 will be no exception. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 3 to 7 p.m. The rain date will be Sunday, Sept. 20, from 3 to 7 p.m. Organizers are expecting a higher turnout than usual and have been planning accordingly. “I’m mildly terrified that, with so many car shows canceled, we’ll wind up with 500 cars,” pastor Stuart Osborne commented. “We’ll just have to pray for very good weather (so we can park on the lawn).” The show usually attracts classic vehicles, but everything interesting is welcome, as the motto is “if you want to drive it or push it, you can bring it.” Osborne noted that one year featured an 18wheeler, and another year’s showpiece was a recreational vehicle. “One guy brings an old Plymouth pickup truck that hasn’t been restored. It’s the kind with a wooden box on the back. It’s one of my favorites,” he added. Typically, participants set up lawn chairs near their vehicles to hang out and answer attendees’ questions, or they walk around and talk with others. “We have a really good time,” Osborne remarked. “People enjoy it because it’s really laid back. It’s a community get-together for enjoyment.” The church provides background music and free refresh-
ments. There is no charge to participate or attend the show, but the organizers still receive offers of donations. In those instances, they usually suggest a charitable cause to support, such as an individual going through cancer treatments or Solid Rock Youth Ministries in Quarryville. This year’s beneficiary has not been selected yet. Community members are also invited to join Encounter Church for worship services on Sundays at 8:30 and 10:45 a.m. Children’s ministry for nursery through fifth grade is offered during both services, and a junior high group for students in sixth through eighth grades meets during the first service.
