In 2017, Diane Duell was attending church, and after the sermon, she felt moved to pray at the altar for affordable housing. Church member Judy Schroeder felt the same calling, and the two soon
realized they had been prayng for the same thing. As a result, they decided to form the Cottage Ministry of Millersville Community Church. The mission of the Cottage is to meet the need for safe housing for women and children in the Penn Manor School District. See Craft Show pg 3

Cruise Over To The Conestoga Classic Car Show he First Responders Friends, a local nonprofit organization, organizes car shows to raise money for its local first responders. With the exception of 2020, the First Responders Friends has organized the Conestoga Classic Car Show every year since 2014, and a few months ago, it also hosted its inaugural Pequea Township Car Show. The seventh annual Conestoga Classic Car Show will take place on Saturday, Sept. 25, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This rain-or-shine event will take place at the Conestoga Volunteer Fire Company, 3290 Main St., Conestoga. Cars will begin parking at 8 a.m., and trophies will be awarded at 2:15 p.m. The show welcomes owners of cars, trucks, and motorcycles to register because trophies will be awarded in multiple categories. Whoever would like to enter a vehicle in the show may register at a discounted price by Saturday,

A Ride For The Wounded Warriors BY COURTNEY MENGEL
On Saturday, Sept. 18, the Saddlebag Riders TEAM of Motorcyclists for Jesus Ministries (MJM) will host a motorcycle rally at Bethany Evangelical Congregational (E.C.) Church of Creswell, 1165 Letort Road, Conestoga. Motorcyclists can arrive at the church as early as 9 a.m., and the ride will take off around 10 a.m. through York County. Members from the ministry will ride as a group, and participants are welcome to join or go at their own pace.

Since 1962, the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation (LPAF) has aimed to enrich the quality of life in Lancaster County by providing cultural programming at Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. LPAF accomplishes this goal through its Summer Music Series and Labor Day weekend Art Festival. To thank the community and offer another opportunity to enjoy live entertainment outside, LPAF will host a one-time Day of Music event on Saturday, Sept. 18. It will take place at Long’s Park and will feature both national and local acts. The venue will open at 2 p.m., and performances will begin at about 2:45 p.m. Performers will include national acts Shannon McNally, The National Reserve, and Big Sam’s Funky Nation, as well as local musicians The Wild Hymns, Tractor Jerry & The Mud Bucket, and Tuck Ryan Band. These artists will introduce the public to a
diverse array of musical genres, including soul, funk, country, and Americana. David Wauls, president of LPAF, noted that the event will give people a chance to hear familiar performers and to get acquainted with ones they hadn’t previously heard of. “Long’s Park has such a long standing tradition with providing qualified, curated, live entertainment for the community,” said Day of Music Chair Tony Kirchner. “What I’m probably most excited about is the idea of constant flow of music featuring national artists but also some regional artists as well. The goal was to stretch through genres, stretch through boundaries, but also stay true to ... what Long’s Park traditionally programs.” Day of Music will be a free event, but donations are encouraged. Food and beverages will be available for purchase on-site, and a beer garden facilitated by the owners of Trio Bar and Grill and the Queen Street Bistro - which plans to open in late Septem-

Penn Manor is partnering with Millersville University (MU) on a $400,000 project to expand the teaching of watershed education in elementary schools. MU has received a three-year grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries to train Penn Manor teachers and MU elementary education majors to educate students about the impact of human activity on local creeks, streams and rivers.

Called “Shared Waters: An Upstream-Downstream Collaborative,” the project is a joint effort of MU, Penn Manor, Virginia Wesleyan University and Norfolk Collegiate School. Over the course of three years, MU will provide professional development to 18 Penn Manor fourth-grade teachers and college faculty members and provide training on watershed education practices to 500 teacher candidates attending MU. These trainees will take their newly acquired knowledge into their classrooms and serve as mentors for other teachers to implement watershed education activities for their students. In all, more than 1,000 elementary students will learn about the impact of local actions on the Chesapeake Bay watershed. On Aug. 2, six teachers and administrators from Hambright and Eshleman Elementary schools began their training at MU’s Watershed Education Training Institute, located at Creek Lodge, near the Conestoga River. Through Sunday, Oct. 31, the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) will feature an Alumni Exhibition, a display of the work of 31 artists from the Class of 1985 through the Class of 2021. Two years ago, the Cottage had its inaugural craft and vendor show fundraiser, and it was recently announced that the show will return. The Cottage’s second annual craft and vendor show is set for 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25, at the church’s Grace campus, 163 W. Frederick St., Millersville. Aidan Gerlach (19th) and Carter Vinson (26th) completed the top five. “J.T. had a great race and held a strong, steady pace over the threemile course,” Ecker. “Isaac also ran well to finish as our third runner.” Junior captain Abby Ames turned in a strong second half of the race and placed fifth overall. Pig Iron Fest Will Celebrate Local History BY CATHY MOLITORIS

“This is a day that’s all about fun, food, entertainment and history,” said Marcus Snow, describing the Pig Iron Fest and Car Show. The event will be held on Sunday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at East Donegal Township Chickies Creek Day Use Area, 1467 Long Lane, Columbia. The event will feature a car show, with categories including classic, antique and street rod cars. “We will have 12 trophies in different categories for the winners,” Snow stated, adding that people can register
their cars on the day of the event. The Pig Iron Fest will feature crafters, artists, a food court, a kids’ zone, live entertainment and history tours. “Our kids’ zone is always very popular,” Snow remarked. “We’ll have lots of activities, including a hayride, crafts and pumpkin painting.” Live music will be performed by Tim Rinard, and juggler Chris Ivey will also entertain. Vendors will be on site, featuring a variety of items. “We have someone who sells 19th-century-inspired jewelry,” Snow said, adding that another

What is now the Northwest River Trail was once a big industrial zone.” The festival is sponsored by the Donegal Rotary Club, and money raised by the event will be used to preserve local historic sites. Proceeds will also benefit the East Donegal/Conoy Area Christian Food Bank and will be used to support veterans’ organizations, including Glenn Hope Care Farm in Felton. vendor will offer crafts inspired by local Native American tribes. “We’ll have a blacksmith and a guy who uses what we call a ‘putt-putt’ engine, or an engine dating from the early 1900s, to mix ice cream.” Snow noted that while the festival is traditionally held adjacent to the Musselman Vesta Iron Furnace, this year’s event will take place in a new venue. “This year will be a little different, but we are still going to focus on history,” he said. “We’ll have some displays about the pig iron industry, and we’ll be doing tours of a historic farm on the property.” The Pig Iron Fest is a way to honor the history of the region.
This year, LOHF is investing $40,000 in the education of local nursing students. This amount consists of $22,000 to 10 new scholarship recipients and $18,000 to previous recipients who are continuing in their degree program. LOHF Nurse Education Scholarships support the education of nurses in licensed practical nursing, registered nursing, Bachelor of Science in nursing, advanced degrees, and certificate programs such as certified school nurse or family nurse practitioner. This year’s Nurse Education Scholarship winners include the following RN Scholars: Ruth Hershey of Millersville and Amanda Jantzi of Strasburg, both attending Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences, along with Hadassah Hoover of New Holland, Kristina Keil of Columbia, and Bhim Thapaliya of Lancaster, all attending HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. Steve Groff at Cedar Meadow Farm, 535 Drytown Road, Holtwood, has created a maze for families to explore in a four-acre field of fiber hemp. The maze is new in 2021. The creative design is shaped like Grizbot, the logo character of Cedar Meadow Farm. Grizbot is the online persona of Grizzly, Groff ’s real-life farm dog and a significant part of the branding for Cedar Meadow Farm. The maze is divided into two parts. Grizbot’s head is cut into fiber hemp that is 7 to 10 feet tall, with a complex shape for older youths and adults to enjoy. Grizbot’s body is designed for smaller children, with shorter hemp and wider, easier paths. More than a dozen learning stations and activities are scattered throughout the maze. Along with exploring the maze, visitors will be able to pick their own pumpkins, squash and gourds, as well as sunflowers, that will be grown around the maze. Cedar Meadow Farm has decades of history and innovation in the area of regenerative agriculture. Groff, known widely as the Cover Crop Coach, is a farmer, international speaker and consultant. After a year’s hiatus because of COVID, the 44th annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction (BDRA), will be held at the Lebanon Valley Exposition Center, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon, on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 24 and 25, beginning at 9 a.m. The auction, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided over $17 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally. Funds raised by the auction not only pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims, but also support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year. Funds and volunteers from the auction have helped immediate relief efforts and longterm cleanup and rebuilding from disasters from earthquakes in Haiti to a tornado in Campbelltown. Separate auctions will include the general auction, the children’s auction, the quilt auction, the theme basket auction, the silent auction, the heifer auction, the coin auction and two pole barn auctions. The event may have as many as five auctions taking place at once. Children’s activities this year will include the children’s auction, specializing in new items for children to be bid on only by children. A children’s store will offer gently used items, and a balloon artist will create balloon animals. Weather permitting, there will also be free barrel train rides

Members of the Echo Valley Art Group have a passion for their craft, but they also have a problem. Years of creating art has created an overabundance of artwork and limited storage space. To remedy the issue, the members host an annual art auction not only to clean out their studios, but also to provide the public with access to affordable, quality art. This year’s Echo Valley Art Group Art Auction will be held on Sunday, Sept. 19, at Rader Park, 1899 Apostle Way, Lancaster. The grounds will open at noon for browsing, and the auction will begin at 1 p.m. “The auction is a fun, relaxed event,” said Carol Toner Shane, an
artist with Echo Valley. “It’s a nice afternoon to enjoy art in a beautiful setting.” Hundreds of works by 20 artists will be up for auction at the event. Artists will be on site with their art, and Shane encourages attendees to talk to them about their work. “Every item will be marked with a minimum bid, and a lot of the art goes for the minimum bid,” Shane explained. “Some gets hyped up and there’s a lot of competition between bidders, so that’s always fun, too.” Along with the auction, the event will feature live music and a free children’s art project from 12:30 to 2 p.m. for those ages 6 to 12. “Susan Ulrich, the new high school art teacher at Lancaster
