Honor, who is all black except for one white spot on his stomach, does not look much like a gold breed of anything, but Rissler is quick to pull up photos of Honor’s mom, a white golden retriever, and his dad, a black LabradorRisslerretriever.became a volunteer puppy raiser for PAD in January, when she received a dog that was soon deemed too fearful for assistance work and released to become a pet. Her second dog, Colby, moved on to his next phase of training toward becoming a school facility dog in early August. “Children are (Colby’s) passion, and Linzey didn’t want to train that out of him,” explained Rissler. Linzey is Linzey Zoccola, who founded PAD in 2009. Zoccola believes it is important to match a dog’s personality to the type of work he will be doing in the future.

The Healthy Kids Running Series will return to Lancaster on Sunday, Sept. 25, at Daniel’s Den Playground in Manor Church Community Park, 530 Central Manor Road. The series will run for five weeks and feature a race on Sundays, Oct. 2, 9, 23 and 30. There will be no race on Sunday, Sept. 25. The goal of the series is to provide children with an inclusive running experience that will encourage an active and healthy lifestyle, bringing both parents and children together in the process. The races will begin at 4 p.m., and registration is open to children between the ages of 2 and 14. Each day of the series will include multiple race distances for runners of different ages and abilities; the series will offer a 50-yard dash and 75-yard dash for prekindergarten children, as well as a quarter-mile, half-mile and 1-mile race for those between kindergarten and eighth grade. “We cheer on the kids crossing the finish line first just as much as those coming around the corner last,” said Dana Atticks, community coordinator of the Healthy Kids Running Series in Lancaster. “Runners of every ability are celebrated. Children with health issues that you would think would hold them back do their absolute best each week and cross the finish line smiling.” Atticks has been in charge of the Healthy Kids Running Series for the past 10 years, becoming involved after each of her daughters participated in the event. “This will be my youngest daughter’s last year she can participate; she was just telling me how excited she is for the season to start. It’s our favorite time of year and the atmosphere is always very positive,” Atticks said. Each day of the event traditionally includes a different theme, such as “Crazy Hair Day,” “Favorite Hat Day” and “Superhero Week,” where children dress up as their favorite caped character and a local first responder shows up to cheer on the runners.TheHealthy Kids Running Series was founded in 2009 as a means of building kids’ self-esteem and reducing childhood obesity rates throughout America. The Lancaster branch of the series is operated by entirely by volunteers. In the past, members of the Hempfield High School Anchor Club and cross-country team have assisted with each race and encouraged runners. The series is also supported by several local sponsors each year. “We’re always in need of sponsors; they keep the series running,” said Atticks. “We were able to include a photo backdrop in last year’s series, thanks to our sponsors.” To become a sponsor for the series,

We’ll have representatives of the Susquehannock Indians who will do activities with the kids.” A variety of demonstrations will be held both days, Ron remarked. “We’ll have a blacksmith, soapmaking, a cider press, people demonstrating weaving,” he said. “The blacksmith shop in town will also be open.” The shop is located at 15 S. Second St. Engines and tractors are part of the festivities as well, and a tractor parade will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday and at noon on Sunday. “This year, we have a water theme, where we encouraged people to show any antiques they can think of that use water, like unique water pumps or sprinklers,” Ron stated. Demonstrations of corn shelling and corn grinding equipment will also be featured, and an operating shingle mill will create shingles branded specifically for the event, available for a donation. Craft vendors and live music will be featured on both days. Three games into the season the lady Comets sit with a section-high 17 goals for and just three against. They opened with a 3-2 loss to Solanco but rebounded with a pair of dominating shutouts, crushing Exeter Township 7-0 and Lampeter-Strasburg 8zip. Leading the way is D-1 recruit Carly Keene who has scored seven goals and dished out seven assists. “We expected to be competitive this season, so we beefed up the schedule a bit,” said former boss Bill Zapata who returns to the sidelines after 11 years. “As long as we stay healthy, we only have 14 on varsity, we’re hoping to be in the mix at the end of the season. We lost four or five starters but have a key group back and picked up Annaleise Mann.”TheComets, missing a key player against Solanco, saw a two-goal lead slip away but they rebounded with back-toback shutouts. “The last two games we scored in the first two minutes and set the tone early,” said Zapata. “Section One is tough. There are no easyKeenegames.”tallied four goals and two assists against Exeter with Lilly Rineer, Lauren Stoner, and Kennedy Dings chipping in. Paityn Smith also assisted twice. TENNIS What a difference a year makes. Last season the Penn Manor girls’ tennis team won two matches. This year, after five matches, the girls are 3-2 having picked up wins over Exeter, Garden Spot and Daniel Boone. “We have everyone back this year, including Catherine Rabatin (LL League singles champ, PIAA District 3 champ and PIAA quarterfinalist) so I’m expecting to win more matches and put up more competitive numbers,” said head coach AmandaThePryzbylkowski.Comets opened September with a 3-2 win over Daniel Boone, their second 3-2 non-league win of the season having topped Exeter earlier.

CROSS COUNTRY

The harrier teams opened the 2022 season with a muddy contest in Neffsville Tuesday, Sept. 6. The final results favored the hosts, who swept both PM and Cedar Crest. While both Comet teams failed to produce a win, they did have some notable efforts. Kaleb Kabakjian broke up Township’s top five with a fourthplace finish in 17:03 and Tristan Weaver’s 12th place finish in 18:33 was just four seconds away from top ten. Abby Ames was the top finisher for the girls, who also suffered a pair of losses. She was 13th and Mackenzi Nafziger followed two places back.“It was cross country at its best with the rain and mud,” said first year head coach Andrea Kramer. “Kaleb gave the team a solid start and was followed by newcomers Weaver, Jack Hightower (25th) and Jack Steele (30th). Aidan Gerlach, Carter Vinson, and Donovan Landis also had top performances,” she added. “Abby, Kenzi and Bethany Hetrick (17th) led the charge for the girls,” Kramer stated, “and were helped by first year varsity runners Madison Martin, Alyssa Eby and Madeleine Rohrer, along with Zoe King.”
Just one week after a 27-13 thriller over CV, the Comets traveled to Lampeter for week two action and were handed a 35-0 defeat. Eli Warfel threw for 138 yards and Jonathan Osman carried the ball eight times for 19 yards and made four receptions for another 98. Turnovers, however, played a role and carried momentum. A first quarter blocked punt and recovered fumble resulted in a pair of touchdowns and an early 14-0 lead by LS.

Rissler has been working to train Honor since he came to live with the Rissler family at 13 weeks of age. He was housebroken within about three weeks of arrival. Basic commands are next, including learning to touch her hand with his nose, a command trainers can build on to teach Honor to open a door. “He knows ‘sit’ and ‘down’,” said Rissler, who explained that Honor is learning to sit patiently under her legs in a restaurant. He also knows the commands “leave it” and “off.” Treats are handed out liberally during this stage of training.Inaddition, Rissler takes Honor to two PAD training sessions each month - one private and one group lesson. She has worked with both Zoccola and PAD trainer Terri Willner. Rissler is also tasked with taking Honor into the community. “Experiences are vital,” she said, noting that she has taken Honor to restaurants and on a trip to Pittsburgh. While he is out and about, Honor wears a special vest with a no-pull harness underneath and a Martingale“(Puppiescollar.intraining) are allowed basically everywhere,” said Rissler, who added the pups have the same rights as service dogs, providing they are not causing issues. Support from PAD during the puppy-raising experience has been plentiful, according to Rissler. “Linzey sends out information regularly about infections going around,” she said, adding that there is a PAD Training Club on Facebook where information for puppy raisers is posted. “There are videos, things to read, modules to learn from, and housebreaking tips,” said Rissler. “There’s a lot of Forsupport.”hispart, Honor has proven himself to be very teachable. “He is easy to train. He’s so intelligent,” said Rissler, who added that as a dog lover, she has been excited to learn about high-reward treats and scatter training techniques, which she can now use with other dogs. Snow encourages everyone to come out for the Pig Iron Fest & Car Show, noting that it promises to be a fun and memorable day. “(It’s an) amazing, family-oriented event where everyone leaves happy,” he stated. “Cars, hayrides, food, music, history - a perfect day.” For more information on the event, visit www.donegal rotary.com. Advance registration is available for the car show for a discount, but registration will also be available at the show.
The Pig Iron Fest & Car Show will feature a hayride, among other activities. The Row House Inc. will host a forum called “Dracula Takes the Pulse of Culture,” featuring Geoffrey Reiter, on Friday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m. at the Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster. 2022 marks the 125th year of this seminal work. Reiter, who teaches at Lancaster Bible College and writes on speculative fiction of all kinds, will uncover some of the book’s religious underpinnings and have some fun with the many permutations and interpretations of the Count’s atTheMorewww.eventbrite.com.Theandturelaevents,legeatThetoSaturday,brunchfreemembersandetsfeesanswermentsTheremythology.willberefresh-andaquestion-and-period.Separatehavebeensetfortick-purchasedinadvanceatthedoor.RowHousemayattendforwithoneguest.Anoptionalday-afterwilltakeplaceonSept.17,at9a.m.continuethediscussion.brunchwilltakeplacetheRowHouse,413Col-Ave.,Lancaster.Toobtainticketsforthesearchfor“Dracu-TakesthePulseofCul-withGeoffreyReiter”“DraculaBrunch@RowHouse”oninformationaboutRowHouseisavailblewww.therowhouse.org.

The Pig Iron Fest & Car Show will be held on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Community Bible Church, 331 Anderson Ferry Road, Marietta. The car show is open to a wide variety of cars, Snow said, as well as motorcycles and trucks. “Most cars are classic or modified, but we have seen an uptick in newer vehicles and bikes.” The festival will feature food vendors, live music from Tim Rinard and Heath Hardin, giveaways and a kid zone. “The kid zone will include pumpkin decorating, games and a hayride,” Snow commented. This is a new venue for the annual event, which was held for many years at the park along Furnace Road in Marietta, next to the Musselman-Vesta Iron Furnace Center. “The park was redeveloped for the Northwest River Trail, and while the improvements are lovely, they prevent the area from being used for events,” Snow explained. “Simply put, the large, open spaces needed for larger events are no longer there. A move was needed to accommodate the fest’s space needs.”The move will not dampen the event’s spirit or its focus on history, Snow said. “Even though we are separated from the furnace ruins, Rivertownes will provide a display of the furnace area along with historic photos from old Marietta,” he stated. “The Vesta building and the ruins will be open for tours throughout the day, and visitors are encouraged to visit theProceedsruins.” from the event will be used to fund projects of the Donegal Area Rotary Club, including supporting local food banks, the historic furnace site, local emergency services and youth leadership programs at Donegal High School.

BY CATHY MOLITORIS When you attend the Pig Iron Fest & Car Show, not only will you enjoy a day of family fun, but you’ll also be giving a nod to the region’s history.“Many may not know, but ‘pig iron’ refers to the cast-iron ingots produced by the Marietta iron furnaces in the 19th century,” explained Marcus Snow, president of the Donegal Area Rotary Club, which is hosting the event. “Molten iron was poured into ingot molds, which branched off of a central vein of iron. The ingots looked like little piglets feeding off of the mother pig, and so the nickname ‘pig iron’ took hold. The early iron industry built Marietta, and the fest honors that history.”
