BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD Bella Vogel first found her passion for athletics at the age of 5, when she began playing soccer. By age 10, she was competing on a boys’ soccer team, but she found that the sport didn’t quite challenge her enough. Searching for a sport that could match her competitive drive, Vogel discovered rugby, and five years later she has her sights set on competing in the Olympics as a rugby player. “She loves the contact aspect and how intense rugby is,” said Tobye Thompson, Vogel’s mother. “It was the next step for us, and we never looked back. It’s definitely her sport.” Vogel began playing for Penn Legacy and now competes locally with the Knightmares rugby club. For the last two and a half years, Vogel has played with national team The Rugby Advantage. This past July, Vogel spent 10 days training with her team in New York City before flying to Utah to compete in a two-day tournament against 24 teams from across the United States. Vogel is also one of the youngest rugby referees in Pennsylvania and refereed the collegiate women’s Division III state championship as an affiliate of the Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Referee VogelSociety.maintains a rigorous training schedule six days a week. On Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays she trains at Team Beast Mode in Lancaster, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays she practices for three hours with the Knightmares. Following her team practice, she trains further with the boys’ rugby team. To raise the funds needed to maintain her demanding training schedule, Vogel and her family operate a market outside of their home in Washington Boro called The Petal on Penn. The market sells produce grown by the family. “We do a lot of things to fundraise and keep up with her training,” said Thompson. “Bella grows and sells the produce; every penny goes straight to

“If we have a more diverse club, we have more ideas and can get out into the community more. We would like to see more fundraisers and projects,” said Rotary Club secretary PJ Roberts. The club formerly met at Oak Leaf Manor in Millersville, and Roberts noted that Meadia Heights has been very accommodating to the club’s vision of expansion. Perrone noted that the Fall Fest is a tradition at St. John’s. “It’s always the third Saturday in September,” she said. “We have people who come from all over the county and into York County. You’ll find a little bit of everything for sale, and it’s a very friendly atmosphere. It’s a fun, laid-back event.” Along with the Fall Fest, the Residents’ Council will host a drive-through chicken barbecue on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the community. Meals will include a half-chicken, a roll, a baked potato and applesauce. Preordered meals must be picked up by 2 p.m. Tickets are available in the office at 200 Luther Lane. Previously, the Rotary Club hosted a magic show at LampeterStrasburg High School, but it was discontinued due to the amount of work required to operate it and the lack of growth in the event.

PPL Foundation announced the 2022 recipients of its annual scholarship program, which will provide financial awards to students from communities throughout eastern and central Pennsylvania. The scholarships help students pursue their interests in engineering, information technology, and the trades. The PPL Foundation awarded scholarships totaling $92,500. With a focus on increasing interest in STEM careers, the program awarded 15 scholarships of $5,000 to students pursuing college degrees and seven scholarships of $2,500 for students pursuing tech and trade careers.

The largest yearly fundraiser for the Rotary Club is the sale of funnel cakes at the West Lampeter Community Fair. The club will also hold a “poker run” at the Lancaster Harley-Davidson, 308 Beaver Valley Pike, Willow Street, on Sept. 10. Participants will draw three cards at the first location and acquire more cards at three separate checkpoints throughout the event. At the end of the ride, the rider with the best hand will be awarded the prize. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. on the day of the event, and the activity will kick off at 9:30 a.m. Roberts, the owner of an autobody shop on Columbia Avenue, has been a member of the Rotary Club for 18 years. “I was in a networking group to make connections throughout the community, but was looking for a way to give back,” Roberts said. “Someone introduced me to the Rotary Club, and I realized it aligned with my goals. I love helping out and seeing the club grow; it’s satisfying to see what we give back to the community.” For more information on the Rotary Club, www.lancsouthrotary.org/.visit info, please contact Pam

“My wife and I were thinking about how we’re strong believers in creating good surroundings,” said Emig. “Some people like to do it to have a date night once a week and others to be surrounded by friends or just to have a regular faith-based outing. The response we’ve received has been awesome and it’s become important to a lot of people.” James and Mindi are members of Victory Church in Lancaster and were inspired by the monthly meeting of the Victory Riders, but wanted to host something more frequent. The dinner rides average eight to 15 riders each week, and the Emigs plan to continue the tradition nextTheyear.ride is affiliated with Bikers For Christ, a motorcycle ministry that James joined seven years ago and that Mindi joined three years later. James now serves as the elder f or the tri-state chapter, which covers eastern Pennsylvania, northern Delaware and New Jersey. The organization focuses on Christian ministry through motorcycle riding and events and has chapters in every state as well as 21 other countries. “I was first introduced to the ministry 12 years ago, and I felt like my calling was secured,” James said. “We attend motorcycle rallies and events. Our mission is to serve the culture and be a vessel for Christ, and I’ve seen so many lives changed through the ministry f or the better.” As the tristate chapter elder, James communicates with his chapter on a weekly basis and organizes events such as the dinner ride. “Anyone is invited to join the ride. It doesn’t matter what you ride; it’s that you ride,” added James. Bikers For Christ was founded in California over 30 years ago to provide a Christian ministry for motorcyclists. The group has grown in size and ambition over the years, now including thousands of members across several chapters. It is considered one of the largest motorcycle ministries in the world. Bikers For Christ sponsors events to raise money for underprivileged communities, those with disabilities and veterans.
