Bethel Evangelical Congregational Church will host a pay-what-you-will yard sale on Saturday, Sept. 8. Organizations Partner For Bike Millersville By Ann Mead Ash
Clara Ames, executive director of No Longer Alone Ministries (NLAM), knows a bit about the history of the event now called Bike Millersville. “(The ride) is 19 years running, but it hasn’t always had the same name,” noted Ames. “It used to be called the Dream Ride.” Ames added that the sponsoring organizations of the event have changed over the past two decades since the ride was first held. Bike Millersville will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center, Millersville University, 60 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville. The event will open for packet pickup at 6:30 a.m., and the ride will start at 7:30 a.m., weather permitting. The ride will be held rain or shine, but delays may be made in the case of fog or other hazardous conditions.
The ride will feature 5-, 20-, and 30-mile cycling tours and 1-, 2-, and 6.5-mile walking tours throughout the greater Millersville area. Rest stops featuring fruit, water, and snack foods will be located along the routes. The stops will also offer bike support. “There are a number of area bike shops that have partnered with (volunteers from) each of the nonprofits to sponsor the rest stops,” explained Ames. The organizations that have partnered to present this year’s ride include NLAM, which is an organization that offers mobile psychiatric rehabilitation services and facilitates faith-based support groups for the purpose of strengthening individuals and families touched by mental illness, and Faith Friendship Ministries of Mountville, which provides residential care and housing, along with shared independent living situations for local See Bike Millersville pg 4

A celebration of the 10th anniversary of Daniel’s Den Playground will be held on Sunday, Sept. 9, at 4 p.m. in the Manor Church Community Park, which is located next to Manor Church, 530 Central Manor Road, Lancaster. The event will include complimentary cake and ice cream as well as plenty of time to play. The vision for a playground accessible to children of all abilities was introduced by church member Denise Haldeman in late 2006. Haldeman’s young son, Daniel, used a wheelchair, and she wanted to ensure that he and other children like him would have an inclusive place to play. The Building Bridges Foundation, which specializes in helping members of the military and their families, will hold a Community Appreciation Day on Saturday, Sept. 15, on-site at 230 Indian Hill Road, Conestoga. In May through August, the foundation has held meetings with people who have signed up as volunteers. The board of directors recognizes the 115 volunteers who are caring for veterans and their families through working with the foundation’s services and sustaining farm operations. The 1719 Hans Herr House and Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street, will host a hearth cooking class from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 22. Using the house’s German-style raised hearth, participants will make soup, bread, and a dessert. They will then share the meal. Patricia Motter, a longtime guide at the Herr House, will lead the class. She often demonstrates the use of the hearth for special events at the Herr House. Before cooking stoves were invented, people cooked on an open-hearth fireplace located in the kitchen. On a raised section of the fireplace, or hearth, a smaller fire was built for use in cooking. individuals. Another sponsor is New Hope Community Life Ministry, located in Quarryville. The organization promotes healing and abundant life through Jesus Christ. Millersville University and the school’s Cy Fritz Foundation, which supports Millersville University’s crosscountry and track and field programs, are also sponsors. There is a minimum fee for cyclists and walkers to register for the ride, but participants may also fundraise for a chosen organization. “A lot of people collect sponsorships, and they ask for so much per mile,” explained Ames. She added that many of those riders then combine routes, so that they can collect a per-mile amount for up to 60 miles. According to Ames, the organization wants to encourage those who cannot be present for the ride to complete it on their own by signing up at www.nlam.org. Ames added that NLAM hopes to raise $15,000 for its general budget from the ride. Gwen Didden, director of Faith Friendship Ministries, said that her goal is for 10 area

Historical Society To Present Program The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) will host a PowerPoint presentation, “Room Enough for Them All: The People of Lancaster County in the 18th Century,” during its monthly meeting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, in Millersville’s Municipal Center, 100 Municipal Drive. The speaker will be Michael S. Showalter, museum educator at the historic Ephrata Cloister. The talk will feature details gleaned from tax records, church and local histories, travel accounts, and family traditions to form a picture of who the residents of this historic Lancaster period were and what their lives were like. Handouts will be available, and questions will be entertained during and after the talk.
Showalter has been a member of the Ephrata Cloister staff since 1996. Starting as a volunteer while still in high school, he now oversees the historic site’s educational programs and public events and manages its volunteer program. Earlier in his career, the northern Lancaster County native worked at Cornwall Iron Furnace and the State Museum of Pennsylvania. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history at Millersville University and a master’s degree in American Studies at Penn State University. Looking back on the opening of The Trust Performing Arts Center, located at 37 N. Market St., Lancaster, five years ago, executive director Robert Bigley admitted that the new venture held some surprises. “We didn’t really know what we were getting into,” he said, adding that the opportunity to start a downtown performing arts center has had many positive results. “We are honored to have been a part of the arts renaissance in Lancaster this past decade,” Bigley stated That delight is exhibited in the lineup that has been chosen to celebrate The Trust’s fifth anniversary. “We are pulling out all the stops,” announced Bigley. Returning artists who will perform will include the Donald Sinta Quartet, Daniel Hsu, New York Polyphony, and Christopher Shih and Friends. The King’s Singers, a group celebrating its 50th anniversary, will perform at The Trust for the first time. All concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m. On Friday, Sept. 7, The Trust will hold its seasonal launch party, where a showcase of local choreographers will present their works in competition. “The AY/dancers will choose one of those (works) to present (at The Trust),” explained Bigley. A-Y/dancers will perform on Saturday, Nov. 17, and Sunday, Nov. 18, at
7:30 p.m. as part of the Durang Dance Collective Presentations at the venue. AY/dancers will perform three pieces by world-renowned choreographers and one by the winner of the local competition. Bigley noted that the Donald Sinta Quartet, made up of four saxophonists who play transcriptions of classical music, crossover songs, and some fun pieces, will open the season on Thursday, Oct. 4. “They played at The Trust in our first season,” recalled Bigley. “They had just won (gold) at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, which is the most important chamber music competition in America.” Bigley added that the acoustics of The Trust are well suited to the group’s sound. Bigley was also excited to announce that The Kings’s Singers will perform at The Trust on Tuesday, Dec. 4, and Wednesday, Dec. 5. Bigley noted that the London-based group is the “most famous vocal ensemble in the world.” Pianist Daniel Hsu was only a teenager when he first played at The Trust during the venue’s third season. “He had just
won the Concert Artists Guild award (when he performed here before), and in 2017, he won bronze in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition,” said Bigley, who added that Hsu will be just 21 when he appears at The Trust on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019. New York Polyphony, a four-man Grammy-nominated classical a capella group, will return to The Trust for the third time on Sunday, Feb. 17, and Monday, Feb. 18, 2019. Christopher Shih, a local physician and pianist, has invited his friend and worldclass cellist Wendy Warner, along with a few others, to perform with him on Thursday, May 2, 2019. In addition, The Trust will host four dramatic presentations, including the classic comedy “The Man Who Came to Dinner” at 7:30 p.m. on the evenings of Oct. 25 to 27 and Nov. 1 to 3 and at 2 p.m. on Oct. 27 and 28 and Nov. 3. A 45-minute production of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” will be presented at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturdays from Dec. 1
to 22, with an additional 11 a.m. performance on Nov. 24. On Friday, Feb. 8, and Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019, the one-man show “Bonhoeffer in Prison” will be presented. “Freud’s Last Session,” will be presented on Friday, March 29, at 7:30p.m.; Saturday, March 30, at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, March 31, at 2 p.m. The play, which imagines a series of meetings between Sigmund Freud and C. S. Lewis, will be staged in the mahogany-paneled board room with a fireplace. Limited tickets will be available for this theater-in-the-round experience. Colombian-born artist Yesid Gomez will present live performance art at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, on Friday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m. in Steinman Hall as part of the We the People First Fridays Initiative. The free event will allow audience members to witness Gomez’s unique combination of movement, music and imagery to create an intricate work of art. Gomez, a contemporary visual artist, draws upon years of formal education that started at age 14 in his native Colombia at Medellin city’s Instituto de Bellas Artes (Beaux-Arts), where he received his certification as a leading painter. His work draws on a philosophical concept that transforms a range of colors and surreal poetic shapes into real movements, forming a colorfully styled mix of
metaphors and lifelike compositions. In addition to Gomez’s live performance, the First Friday event will also feature Gomez’s exhibit “Miserable” on display in the Regitz Gallery. Haldeman noted that the blessings from the playground have exceeded her expectations. “Before it was built, I really never thought about families, parents, and children coming to know Christ through the playground, but that’s exactly what has happened, and knowing I could be a part of that gives me wonderful satisfaction,� she said. The Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation held its first Covenanter Scottish Festival four years ago. As time has passed, the event has grown to include a wide array of entertainment and educational opportunities, and this year’s festival promises to be no exception. The athletic events will begin at 8 a.m. The Washington Memorial Pipe Band, Charlie Zahm and Tad Marks, Fire in the Glen, and harpist Kendrah Tozzo will perform throughout the day, and bagpipers will skirl their best for a panel of judges. There will also be a Highland dance competition, and the Penn’s Wall Highland Games will test athletes’ abilities to move cumbersome objects great distances. Scottish clans and organizations will be represented, and vendors will sell Scottish goods, food, and locally made ice cream. A variety of demonstrations have been planned; these may include spinning and weaving, Irish dancing, a haggis ceremony, and more. One of the confirmed demonstrations will be that of sheep herding. Rebecca Bellaman of Bainbridge will bring her Border collies Czechers and Ena to show how they move sheep through and around obstacles in a calm and controlled fashion. Bellaman has been working with collies since 1999 and obtained her first working dog in 2013. She competes regularly with two of her three dogs. Czechers is 5 and has moved up to open-level trialing, while 1.5-year-old Ena is just making her debut into the sport.
According to the United States Border Collie Handlers’ Association (USBCHA), sanctioned stockdog trials are modeled directly after trials in Great Britain, where both the event and the breed originated. The object of a trial is to test the ability of a dog to manage sheep or goats in circumstances they may encounter in everyday work. The dogs may be asked to gather, drive, shed, single, or pen an individual or group of sheep. Handlers are expected to give their dogs few commands and to work their dogs quietly. Bellaman and several of her friends will run a mock competition so that spectators may experience an arena sheepdog trial. They will also give a basic demonstration on the training of the collies. “Coming from an Irish family, I have always been into the Celtic and old-fashioned lifestyle, and working these dogs just gives me a bond with the animals you can only imagine,� Bellaman remarked. Children age 12 and under will be admitted free of charge. Parking will be free of charge and located at the church. Handicapped-accessible parking will be available. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating, and wearing sunscreen is advised, as shade may be limited. The Lancaster County Planning Commission will host a viewing of a Penn State Extension webinar on “Addressing Noise in Pennsylvania Communities and Neighborhoods” on Wednesday, Sept. 19, from noon to 1:15 p.m. The webinar will be held in Room 104 at the Lancaster County Government Center, 150 N. Queen St., First Floor Annex, Lancaster. The webinar will provide background for municipalities by briefly covering the significant, adverse health effects that noise causes in communities, based on current scientific research, and will discuss statutory authority for noise pollution control. Three examples of noise ordinances will be discussed along with the problems of trying to address noise through outdated, general, “nuisance” ordinances. On Saturday, Sept. 15, New Path Community Church will host the second annual Hunt and Gather Sportsmen Dinner in the gymnasium at Mount Calvary Christian School, 629 E. Holly St., Elizabethtown. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. Dinner, which will be a full meal catered by a Mount Joy-based barbecue business, will begin at 5:30 p.m. Ohio native Mark Ledford will be the keynote speaker for the evening. One of Ledford’s claims to fame was harvesting a 26-point buck in 2013 that gross scored 222 inches nontypical and net scored 216 inches nontypical. He harvested a double drop tine buck in 2014 and a 150-inch 15-pointer in 2016. Ledford, who has written articles for Bowhunter and Big Buck magazines, will share his hunting stories from across the United States, which are filled with successes, failures, mishaps, and laughter. Ledford will also bring along his hunting mounts for folks to see. Jean, who is an avid hunter like Jay, said that she would like to see more women and youths attend this year’s event. “It’s really for everybody,� Jean remarked. All Hunt and Gather Sportsmen Dinner attendees will be entered to win a variety of hunting-, fishing-, and outdoors-themed giveaways. Jay noted that more than $9,000 worth of giveaways will be distributed at the event, many of which have been donated by local businesses. Several trips will be available to win, including an archery antelope hunt in Montana, a pheasant hunt for four in Reading, two hog hunts in Texas, and a six-person striper fishing trip to Rock Hall, Md. Additional prizes will include crossbows, firearms, hunting gear, and gift cards to area businesses.
