Barron, who lives at the center in Washington Boro, will be the featured guest when Raven Ridge commemorates International Vulture Awareness Day with a celebration that will take place Saturday, Sept. 6, from noon to 5 p.m. at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. Raven Ridge director Tracie Young said Sept. 6 will be a day nature centers and vulture conservancies around the world celebrate the large bird of prey. Raven Ridge’s event, which will be held rain or shine, will feature games, crafts, and coloring contests. Food trucks will be on-site.

West said that since forming in 2009, the council has impacted nearly 24,000 girls through locally delivered GOTR, Heart & Sole, and Camp GOTR programs. character development.’ At the time, we both had girls in third and fifth grade, and it was fantastic.” The first team consisted of 25 girls in Hempfield and now GOTR teams are in every single school district in Lancaster and four of the six districts in Lebanon. “We have been growing by leaps and bounds every single year,” West said. “Lancaster and Lebanon counties have been such a welcoming community. It’s absolutely amazing to see the support from donors and sponsors but also from the families that trust us enough to allow us to spend this time with their daughters. It’s just absolutely unbelievable.”

An annual highlight is the live auction for a five-course meal at the home of Help the Fight founders Dave and Lynda Charles. “We’re trying to have a lot of experiences, because I think that’s what people like,” Richardson said. There will be a buffet dinner with mini desserts. “It’s very casual and fun,” said Richardson. “It’s a great space to bring people together to enjoy the night.” All the funds generated remain
local. “That’s something we pride ourselves in,” said Richardson. Dave and Lynda started Help the Fight in 2009 after Dave’s sister was diagnosed with breast cancer after just beginning a new job. Soon after that, Dave and Lynda’s assistant also got breast cancer. Help the Fight started with a bake sale along Columbia Avenue, and it raised $9,000, Help the Fight patient and volunteer coordinator Susie Dailey said. Dailey noted that Help the Fight works with cancer centers in the area, and clients are referred by nurse navigators, social workers, or a doctors’ office, or they find out
about the group through a friend, the website, or social media. “We provide gap funding,” said Dailey. “We help with rent, mortgage, utilities, medical bills, whatever the need is what we help the patient with.” One patient wanted her child to be able to attend karate lessons in an attempt to keep things normal, and Help the Fight made it happen. “We’ve filled oil tanks. We put tires on cars. We’ve filled prescriptions to help with their cancer diagnosis,” Richardson said. “We help with transportation and groceries; whatever the need is, that’s what

The great thing about everyone having cell phones is that they’re able to take pictures or videos of what they’re seeing and send them to us, and we can say, yes, that’s natural behavior for that animal, or no, it’s not. We can talk them through it or make sure that the animal gets to us for help.” Educating the public is an important part of Raven Ridge’s
GOTR is for girls of every ability. “You don’t have to run to be in the program,” said West. “That is a common misconception because we’re called Girls on the Run, but it’s really about moving forward. We say you can hop, roll, skip, or jump your way to the finish line.” West noted that the program offers an ideal time to bond with teammates. “The girls will talk about everything from being a good friend to stopping and take a breather before you respond to texts and social media,” she said. “We talk about peer pressure and how can you be the best friend and what qualities do you look for in a friend. It’s so much fun for the girls and it really does introduce them to a lifelong love of being physically active. When you are walking or jogging or running side by side with somebody and you’re having conversations and being silly and having a good time, you’re not thinking about whether you’re jogging or walking.” There are approximately 600 volunteer coaches a year. “We can’t run the program without volunteers,” said West. “One of our biggest hurdles when it comes to providing the program is recruiting our volunteer coaches. It is a pretty big commitment
mission. “We run a lot of education programs,” said Raven Ridge education coordinator Molly Snavely. “We have 10 different education programs that run from all ages to preschool to elementary, high school, and then just ones for adults. We do those all year, and that’s a big part of how we raise money to be able to do.” Snavely said Raven Ridge also staffs booths at other public events. “People can come up to us, and we can either bring animals or just hand out information,” she said. “Since (the wildlife center is) not open to the public, we rely on our education programs to be able to interact with people, and that’s the best way for us to do that.” Go to www.ravenridgewildlife center.org for more information about Raven Ridge Wildlife Center’s education programs.

Anyone interested in volunteering can email GOTR program director Kylie Homan at kylie.homan@ girlsontherun.org. “Girls on the Run has a nationally recognized training program for our coaches,” said West. We want to make sure they’re equipped with everything they need to serve the girls the best they can.” Each GOTR athlete will compete with a buddy in the season-ending 5K. The buddy must register for the race and be 16 years old or older. “The buddies are there to keep encouraging them to go at their pace,” said West. “It can be a family friend, it can be a teacher, it can be a neighbor.” GOTR is also seeking volunteers for the 5K. “We need hundreds of volunteers to be in cheer zones and people to make it fun and help keep it safe,” said West.

Loft Plans Driving Out Hunger Golf Event Loft Community Partnership will host its second annual G.R. Mitchell Driving Out Hunger golf fundraiser on Wednesday, Sept. 10, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Registration will begin at 7 a.m., and the four-person scramble will begin at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start. The set cost for four people includes golf, use of a cart, continental breakfast, lunch, snacks, course games, and contests. A giveaway drawing and silent auction will be available to help raise money for Loft’s neighbors
in need. To register by Wednesday, Aug. 27, visit www.loftcp.org. Currently, Loft serves more than 400 families weekly, and the proceeds from the Driving Out Hunger event will help Loft sustain its programs aimed at tackling food insecurity across the county.
