On the first Friday of August, Mulberry Art Studios, 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, hosted the opening of local artist Tama Etra’s collection titled “Mixed Bag.” The display featured multiple pieces that utilize materials like leftover junk mail and unwanted magazines to create an array of mixed-media collages. Primarily working with acrylic paints for most of her career, Etra began exploring the world of collaging and mixed-media work over the last 10 years. “Mixed Bag” also includes an acrylic painting and several alcohol ink pieces and showcases the artist’s work beyond the conventional. Etra was born and raised in New York, where she studied commercial art at New York Technical College and had her artwork displayed in multiple galleries. In addition to her work as an artist, Etra pursued a career as a counselor specializing in women with addictions, where she used her love for the arts to help clients benefit from connecting with creative expression. She moved to Lancaster in 2005, where she continues to leave her mark on numerous different mediums. Etra will teach classes at Mulberry Art Studios this fall. The “Mixed Bag” collection showcases one of many types of talent that have been featured at Mulberry Art Studios. The creative space has served as a host for artists of all kinds for nearly 35 years, welcoming painters, musicians, dancers and sculptors, and even contributing to the start of the First Friday tradition downtown. “My vision was to transform the city of Lancaster using creative arts and positive self-expression,” said founder and owner April Koppenhaver. “As a little girl, my family traveled around the country, and I saw several vacant warehouses in decay. Artists always need space to exist, so it was a no-brainer. I wanted to present all of the arts under one roof.” Koppenhaver herself is a writer, photographer and painter,

Attendees of the festival will have an opportunity to experience games and activities such as the “caber toss”, Scottish dancing and a bagpiping contest, where bagpipers perform before a panel of judges and have a chance to earn medals. The event will also feature a traditional haggis ceremony; information will be provided on the unique dish as it is served with Scotch whiskey. Before the end of the festival, a re-enactment of the Octorara Declaration of 1743 will occur, in which participants portray the day that Covenanters first gathered to deem King George II an unfit and ungodly ruler and take up arms. Each year, multiple descendants of Scottish clans attend the festival and set up stands to hand out information on their background and sell handmade goods. Vendors will offer both Scottish and American cuisine for purchase. The church, which is the known as the oldest Covenanter church in North America, first began hosting the festival nine years ago as a means to raise money for the maintenance and restoration for the historic property. Proceeds benefit the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation and various projects such as reworking old, hazardous wiring in the building and restoring the church to its state in 1880. “The Covenanters were different in that they brought their pastors directly from Scotland and played a huge role in the Revolutionary War,” said former Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation president Barry Girvin. “They derived their name from the many covenants that were broken by the British to make

A crowd of construction partners, Landis Quality Living board members, donors and newly signed tenants recently enjoyed a morning at Landis Place to participate in a topping-out gathering. Topping out is a builders’ tradition that celebrates a milestone during a construction project.High Construction project superintendent Jim Kline noted the tradition goes back as far as the 700s, when builders in Scandinavian regions would place a sheath of grain on top of the building for good Duringluck.the ceremony held on Aug. 2, all those in attendance signed a steel beam that was then lifted by a construction crane and set in place in the northwest corner of the building, becoming the first of the roof beams to be set. A prayer of thanks and gratitude was offered by the Rev. Elizabeth Soto. The building will contain apartments aimed at the middle market as well as for those with less than the area median income. Landis Quality Living is in the process of raising at least $550,000 to bring down the amount needing to be financed, making it possible for at least eight of the apartments to be available at lower-cost rents. If more funds are raised, the number of low-cost apartments will increase. When finished, Landis Place on King will bring 79 apartments and ground-floor retail space to 239 W. King St., Lancaser. The opening is set for March of 2023 and already has renters for about 30% of the apartments, even without having a model to show.

extraordinary places around the globe. Kauffman has seen wild horses on Assateague Island, grizzly bears in Alaska and coyotes at Yellowstone, and he plans on taking a polar bear tour in Antarctica this fall. His passion for photography, however, began five years ago at Conowingo Dam. “I’ve always loved wildlife,” said Kauffman. “Five years ago, I bought a camera to take pictures of the eagles at Conowingo Dam and I just fell in love with it.” Although Kauffman primarily worked in commercial refrigeration for the last 20 years, his passion for photography and observing wildlife has yielded him several awards and hundreds of breathtaking shots. Last year, he won the Conowingo eagle photography contest, and his entry for the 2022 Audubon Photography Awards landed at No. 12 among the top 100 pictures. This was Kauffman’s second year entering the contest, which received close to 10,000 entries from over 2,000 photographers and videographers. Submissions were received from contestants globally and were judged by three panels containing professional wildlife photographers, conservationists and nature educators. Kauffman captured the acclaimed shot of two Northern flickers right in his own backyard after spending months learning about their routines and observing their behavior. “I had a pair of flickers mating and building a nest on my property, so I was able to spend four months getting a good idea of how they go about their business,” Kauffman said. “It was really eye-opening how they raise their chicks. I was trying to capture all aspects of the process from building the nest to when the chicks become fledglings.”Thefeatured image depicts the male and female flickers’ technique in feeding their young; the birds would take turns retrieving food while the other stood guard by the entrance to the nest, ready to resume feeding. “The process they had to go through to feed their chicks was amazing. There were several hawks in the area preying on other birds, so they needed to be vigilant,” Kauffman said. He took several hundred shots over the course of a couple weeks before capturing both birds in one frame, utilizing a special technique to add a unique flair to the image. A new camera, equipped with a rolling shutter, gives a curved appearance to objects in motion, a method Kauffman likes to use when portraying the fluid motion of the subject’s wings.Kauffman also emphasized the ease with which anyone can look out for wildlife in their local areas. “Wherever you live, the internet makes it easy to get connected and help out,” Kauffman said. “When I was in Maryland, I came across an injured raccoon on the road. I didn’t know anything about the area but searched for the nearest rescue center. After I called, they were able to send someone out right away.”

Jeffrey Kauffman’s passion for photography has taken him around the globe.

Kauffman’s image of two Northern flickers was recognized in the 2022 Audubon Photography Awards.

Athletes participate in traditional Scottish games during the festival. Presbyterianism the state religion. They came to America fleeing persecution and opposing the monarchy, so it was logical that they would become involved with the revolution.” Girvin curates the school room museum, which is attached to the old church. The museum houses a collection of church materials and artifacts from the early days of the church, as well as a plethora of old documents and photographs from the many one-room schools that used to dot the landscape. Festival attendees will be able to tour the old church and museum, as well as access archived information and research their genealogy. “People who have relatives or ancestors that attended one of the old schools in the area can look up old pictures and information,” said Girvin. “Anyone is welcome.”

Participants in the memorial will scale the steps of the stadium as they wind around its interior five times, the equivalent of the 110 stories of the twin towers. Each participant traditionally carries an image of a first responder who was killed on the day of the attack as he or she endures the long climb. “Everyone carries a picture of someone who didn’t make it,” said Scott Yuill, a member of the East Petersburg Fire Company for almost 50 years. “You’re symbolically finishing the climb that they weren’t able to.” Yuill has assisted with the event for 12 years and first became involved as a way to honor a friend and fellow firefighter who was killed during the collapse of the World Trade Center. The proceeds from the event will benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, with funds directly supporting counseling services for the New York fire Department. Counseling is still offered for those who lost loved ones on 9/11.

Stair Climb frompg 1 Hospice & Community Care’s Pathways Center for Grief & Loss, 4075 Old Harrisburg Pike, Mount Joy, will host an event to recognize International Overdose Awareness Day, Wednesday, Aug. 31. International Overdose Awareness Day aims to acknowledge the grief felt by families and friends of those who have died from a drug overdose and to reduce the stigma of a drugrelated death. The Pathways Center’s event will be held on Aug. 31 from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and it is open to anyone regardless of whether their loved one was served by Hospice & Community Care.

Those who wish to contribute to the foundation may donate at the event or online.TheNational Fallen Firefighters Foundation was created by Congress in 1992 to drive a nationwide effort to honor those killed in the line of duty. The foundation has since conceptualized multiple programs to accomplish its mission and sponsors memorial stair climbs similar to Lancaster’s across the country. A grant from the Department of Justice contributes to programs specifically made for families of fallen firefighters, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology partners with the foundation to research methods that may prevent death and injuries among firefighters in the line of duty. “The stair climb gives people a chance to remember and to learn,” said Yuill. “The attack happened over 20 years ago now. There are several participants that weren’t even born yet. This gives them the chance to learn and a chance for those who do remember to honor the sacrifices made that day.” The stair climb draws firefighters from multiple states to complete the symbolic journey, fully dressed in their uniforms and equipment. Last year’s climb also featured an appearance by the Philadelphia Eagles’ cheerleading squad.
