Unraveling the mysteries of science

Afewyears ago, Hambright Elementary School teacher

Lorien Gilbert heard about a program called Mystery Science. Gilbert’s aunt, who is also a teacher, had incorporated the program into her own lessons and gifted Gilbert a one-year subscription to its lessons. Although Gilbert had not started teaching science yet, she found the interactive science lessons to be a way to encourage her students’ curiosity and engage with the world around them.

Mystery Science is a curriculum for children in elementary school, and it was designed not only to keep young students interested in the material, but also to help them enjoy. Each lesson is aligned with state education standards and combines hands-on learning activities with unusual subjects like naturally occurring phenomena. One lesson

might detail the implausible nature of bees’ ability to fly; another lesson may task the students with building a structure out of toothpicks to learn how Japanese schools withstand earthquakes. With access to Mystery Science, teachers can search a database for a lesson based on a specific topic, grade level or duration of time.

At first, Gilbert primarily used the lessons as an alternative to recess when it was raining or as a reward for students who completed a task. After switching to a virtual classroom during the COVID-19 pandemic, she was unable to integrate the lessons due to the online curriculum having less flexibility. Once Gilbert was able to teach in a physical classroom again, she was focused on returning to a normal routine and didn’t bring back the Mystery Science lessons right away. As things slowly returned to normal, Gilbert began to consider what she could do for the school with a venture grant; See Science program pg 5

Building school spirit, on and off of the field

As a Christian school, Dayspring Christian Academy, 120 College Ave., Mountville, is faced with many unique situations, which it seeks to tackle with a specialized approach. Among these situations is the opportunity to expand certain aspects of student life, including athletics.

“Although they are often referred to as extracurricular activities, we view athletics as a part of the educational process for students,” said Dan Stone, Dayspring’s headmaster. “Beyond academics, the other

portions of student life shape their thinking, their behavior and who they become.”

Over the course of the last five years, Dayspring has attempted to cultivate a brand that surrounds its sports teams with the intention of promoting school spirit. After the school introduced a new logo and offered its students more spirit wear, Stone began to notice an increasing number of students who are proud to be a part of its athletics programs in both winning and losing seasons.

instrumental in the enhancements in the department. Onasch took over as the head athletic director three years ago and worked closely with assistant athletic director Eric Lee to bring the program to where it stands today. After Onasch decided to step down from his position following the 2022-23 school year, Stone began the process of seeking a replacement to continue Onasch’s work. Stone sifted through multiple applications before he came across Daryn Vinson, and he immediately knew that it would be a natural fit.

this as a way to give back to the families of Dayspring students and help the school accomplish its mission.”

Vinson officially started in his new role on July 1. During the transition, he has been meeting regularly with Onasch to make it as seamless as possible. As the school geared up for the beginning of its fall sports season on Aug. 14, Vinson worked to finalize game schedules, solidify transportation and practice rentals and decide on coaching placements.

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

Vinson, who resides in Washington Boro, had been teaching and coaching in the Penn Manor School District for 22 years. He has two children who attend school in Penn Manor and two children who attend Dayspring. “As I’ve gotten to know (Dayspring’s) heart and mission over the past few years, I decided that I wanted to partner with them and the work they do,” Vinson said. “I saw

Moving forward in his new role, Vinson has a vision of the areas of the program he would like to further improve.

One of his main goals is to increase Dayspring’s community engagement and support.

“We draw students from multiple school districts, so it can be challenging to achieve that sense of community involvement,” Vinson said. “I’m looking at how to improve that and increase attendance for games. These kids are doing amazing work using the gifts

Museum, film festival announce collaboration

The North Museum of Nature and Science will be one of three screening locations for the Red Rose Film Festival on First Friday, Nov. 3, and Saturday, Nov. 4. As an Executive Producer-level sponsor of the Red Rose Film Festival (RRFF), the North Museum will open its 85-seat planetarium for screenings of several of the festival’s selected independent films.

In addition to the North Museum, the screening locations for the four-year-old festival are Zoetropolis and Lancaster Southern Market.

One of the festival’s goals is to promote Lancaster to global filmmakers as a fertile place to create future works. From more than 100 films submitted from all over the globe, the final selections will be made by a diverse panel of judges. Film submissions are due Friday, Sept. 1, and the screening schedule will be announced in mid-September. Additional information is available at www.redrosefilmfestival .com.

To learn more about the North Museum, visit www.northmuseum.org.

God has given them.”

In addition to seeing an increase in the number of student accomplishments in the last few years, Stone has noticed his students making more of an impact in the community. The school frequently receives emails from restaurant employees and other schools’ coaches who state that Dayspring athletes’ respectful behavior left an impression. “These things are more special to us than trophies,” Stone said.

Local residents honored in photo contest

The Susquehanna Greenway Partnership recently announced the results in its 12th annual photo contest. The winners included Kerri Batrowny of Bainbridge, who received first place in the Landmarks category, and Mark Boyd of Conestoga, who placed third in the Wildlife category.

Judges also evaluated photos in the River Towns and Susquehanna Adventures cat-

egories, and members of the public were invited to vote in the People’s Choice contest via Facebook. The winning photos will be displayed in a traveling photo contest gallery.

For more information and to view all the winning photos, visit https://susquehanna greenway.org/ and look under Projects & Programs or search for “Susquehanna Greenway Partnership” on Facebook.

will have a chance to win prizes at each game, including books, stuffed animals, bracelets and small toys. Members of the 4-H club will offer pony rides for children. There will be no charge to attend the festival, but attendees will need to purchase tickets to partake in the games and activities.

At 5 p.m., more than 10,000 rubber ducks will be dropped into the Conestoga River for the traditional race and primary attraction of the festival. Ducks may be adopted online ahead of the event or on the day of the race, and each owner of a racing duck will be entered into a drawing for cash prizes and gift cards. Sponsorships are also available for the race; sponsors and those who adopt a duck will receive a souvenir duckie to take home, which will

include limited-edition Halloween- and back-to-schoolthemed ducks. To adopt a duck or to become a sponsor, visit www.schreiberpediatric .org/events/duckies.

Since the festival began 35 years ago, it has cemented its role as a beloved tradition in the community, and it draws more than 1,000 attendees each year. The event serves as one of the largest yearly fundraisers for Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster. The funds raised from ticket sales and duck sponsorships are used to cover the organization’s operational expenses and cost of treatment for patients who cannot pay in full. The price of adopting 15 ducks will cover the cost of one hour of a patient’s uncompensated treatment. “We never turn a

client away based on their ability to pay,” said Kristen Masengarb, associate director of fund development for Schreiber. “As an organization, we lose an average of $75 per hour of treatment that isn’t covered by insurance or Medicaid.”

Additionally, the funds raised by the Rubber Duckie Race and Festival will help Schreiber to complete its ongoing expansion project, which will entail moving its operation to a larger facility

on its current premises. The new building will allow more space for treatments such as physical, occupational and speech therapy, as well as increase Schreiber’s availability to see patients on its waiting list. The organization expects to fully relocate to the new facility in the fall. For more information or to become a volunteer for the festival, visit the aforementioned website or email Masengarb at kmasengarb@ schreiberpediatric.org.

New scholarship established in honor of Waggoner

The Solanco Cross-Country and Track and Field Alumni Association, created in 2014 by a group of alumni and former coaches, continues to work to promote past, present and future success of the cross-country and track and field programs. The association carries out activities each year to assist current studentathletes involved with both sports. Some alumni donations, $200 to $300 each year, go directly to providing training shoes or clothing for athletes in need, and support specialized track camps as well.

The association’s largest effort is the generation of funds for scholarships awarded each May to student-athletes. The Coach Art Harrington Cross-Country and Track and Field Scholarship, established in 1999, has been awarded to more than 42 students. The Coach Lee Rhodes Cross-Country Scholarship was established in 2017 and has been awarded seven times. New for 2024 is a third scholarship, named after coach John Waggoner.

“The alumni association

has raised about $40,000 over 24 years,” said former head coach Craig Ausel, a board member for the association. “Last year, we gave two $2,500 scholarships. Emma Baxter received the Art Harrington Scholarship, and Anthony Solis-Morales was awarded the Coach Lee Rhoades Scholarship. And, thanks to a generous donation by former cross-country and track standout Tom Funk, we are introducing the Coach John Waggoner Scholarship. We have extremely generous alumni, (whose support) we hope continues to grow. We appreciate their support.”

The association also generates scholarship funds from sponsorship signs displayed at cross-country and track meets. “The signs have helped tremendously,” said Ausel. “Alumni, family and friends purchase signs and dedicate them to former teams, family members and/or coaches. Some businesses also support the scholarship.”

In addition to the scholarship sign donation drive, held throughout the year, the asso-

The organization has a website and Facebook page that share news and information regarding all events. “We encourage alumni, family and friends to log onto the website - www.solancoxc.org - and register to receive updates

regarding events and happenings,” said Ausel. “We will also have a booth at the Solanco Fair this year. (Students are encouraged to) stop by and share stories from (Solanco cross-country) and track days gone by with past coaches and alumni.”

Virtual workshop will teach tree pruning

Penn State Extension will offer a virtual workshop on how to correctly prune trees.

“Why We Should Be Making

Small Pruning Cuts” will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 29, from noon to 1 p.m.

Branch failure can be caused by wind, ice, snow or a climber aloft. Such breakage can result in costly property damage, personal injury, power outages or blocked roads.

During the upcoming workshop, attendees will learn how tree branches deal with loading throughout the tree structure. There will also be a discussion on the biology around why small cuts are better than larger cuts and the impacts of decay on wound closure after pruning.

The program is designed to benefit municipal managers, foresters and arborists, as well as others interested in

urban and community forestry.

The webinar is free, but a fee may be associated with the following credits: Society of American Foresters (CFE), pending approval; International Society of Arboriculture; Certificate of Attendance for Professionals and Others to Self-Report; and Peer Volunteer/Master Gardener Update Training.

The program is being presented by the Penn State Extension in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, State and Private Forestry; Pennsylvania DCNR, Bureau of Forestry; and Pennsylvania TreeVitalize Program, Pennsylvania Community Trees. To register, visit https://exten sion.psu.edu/education -format/webinars and search for “Why We Should Be Making Small Pruning Cuts.”

she had previously acquired a venture grant from the Penn Manor Education Foundation (PMEF) for projects to implement flexible seating and specific textbooks.

“I wanted a venture grant to do something different and hands-on,” Gilbert said. “I realized that Mystery Science offered lessons for grades kindergarten through sixth grade, and I thought that a grant to acquire the curriculum would help the whole building.”

Gilbert applied for the venture grant last fall, and it was approved by PMEF in January.

Teachers throughout the school have since introduced Mystery Science lessons to their classrooms in a variety of ways; some teachers use a brief five-minute lesson to start off the students’ day, while others use the videos as incentives for students to meet their goals. After watching a lesson, one student was inspired to write a video essay addressed to astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson to make his case for why Pluto should be considered a planet.

The program encourages students to ask questions and focuses more on promoting curiosity than asking for one

right answer. Each lesson begins with a question that was submitted to Mystery Science by a student from anywhere in the world, and the topics can range from the chemical reaction inside of volcanoes to the length of a giraffe’s neck.

“This is something that is truly valuable to the whole school, and we couldn’t have done it on our own,” Gilbert said. “We’re so fortunate to have venture grants from (PMEF). It’s wonderful to be able to provide those above and beyond exploration opportunities.”

em Português,” is one of several on the album featuring Portuguese guitarist Luís Guerreiro. The album also features trumpeter Luís Cunha.

“Vibrant Simplicity” was produced under the Escutar Records label at Slow Music Studios in the country of Portugal. Slow Music Studios is known for its work with artists such as Rui Veloso, Dianne Reeves, BB King and others.

In support of the album release, Ericson will embark on an international tour, bringing her live performances to fans in the USA, Portugal, Brazil, Mexico and other countries. “Vibrant Simplicity” will be available on all major music platforms starting in December.

Ericson is a lyricist, singer, composer and executive producer on “Vibrant Simplicity,” which is her first album. Ericson, who has demonstrated her musical talents since childhood, is a poet, author, ghostwriter and editor as well as a theater and

film professional, originally from Lisbon, Portugal.

Ericson emigrated to Lancaster County in 2002 and has been working for more than 21 years at Sight & Sound Theatres, where she is the technical writer and research specialist, while also serving as a script supervisor in the company’s films branch.

Ericson has authored two nonfiction books - true biographies that tell stories of survival of contemporary individuals. Ericson has published three poetry books, one in English, titled “Vibrant Simplicity,” which won a first-place Christian Indie Award in 2022, and two in Portuguese released in 2023. Another poem released in 2021 won an international award, which Ericson received in 2023 at a

ceremony in Geneva, Switzerland. Ericson performs her poetry in dramatic presentations and won first place in a live international Portuguese poetry tournament in 2022.

Church of the Apostles to hold back-to-school campout

Church of the Apostles will host a back-to-school campout on Saturday, Aug. 26, and Sunday, Aug. 27, at Rader Park, 1899 Apostle Way, Lancaster. The free event will be open to the public, and it will include family-friendly games and activities, fellowship and a guest speaker from a local nonprofit organization.

On Saturday, guests will begin to arrive to set up their tents and provisions at noon. From 3 to 5 p.m., families will be able to participate in a variety of activities, such as scavenger hunts, a fishing derby, a lawn water slide and lawn games. Prizes with a back-toschool theme, including school supplies, will be given out during the activities. A fellowship dinner will begin at 6 p.m.; the church will provide hamburgers and hot dogs, but it asks that attendees bring a side or small item to share for the meal. A worship service will be held after dinner at 7:30 p.m.

The event will resume at 9 a.m. on Sunday with a talk from guest speaker Carol Welsh from Homefields Care Farm. Homefields is a nonprofit organization that operates an organic farm in Millersville and provides work

opportunities for those with disabilities. Welsh will discuss the farm’s role in the community, as well as topics such as food journaling and methods of maintaining good health and a nutritious diet. The presentation is part of the church’s Compassion Camp series, which it uses to highlight local nonprofits.

A worship service will be held at 10 a.m. in the park’s pavilion, followed by a potluck lunch at 11 a.m. During lunch, a blessing of backpacks service will be held. The service is a yearly tradition that includes a prayer with children who will begin a new school year in the fall. Previously, the blessing of backpacks took place during the church’s regular Sunday worship service at the end of summer. The ritual was moved to coincide with the campout

event, which Church of the Apostles will host for the first time this year.

“We wanted to familiarize more people with our park and the resources that are there,” said Kathryn Kuhn, pastor of Church of the Apostles. “It’s a nice, quiet space to be in nature.”

Rader Park is a 20-acre park that is owned and maintained by Church of the Apostles. Throughout the year, the church hosts educational events at the park in partnership with the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation. The park contains a pond, access to Brubaker Run, a walking trail and a butterfly garden.

For more information or to register for the campout, visit https://apostlesucc.org/week end-at-the-park.

Youths invited to apply for program

The Keystone State ChalleNGe Academy (KSCA) is accepting applications for its fourth class of cadets which will begin in January 2024. The KSCA is designed to give academically challenged teens a second chance at obtaining their basic education, and learning leadership, self-discipline and responsibility while working toward finishing their education and building a better life.

The opening of the academy at Fort Indiantown Gap (FTIG) in Lebanon County in July 2022 formally established the National Guard Bureau’s Youth ChalleNGe Program in Pennsylvania.

The program is open to

16- to 18-year-old Pennsylvania residents who are failing to progress in high school or may not be on a clear path to graduating.

Applicants must be willing to be drug free, to be free of felony convictions and to voluntarily commit to the program. The program lasts for 17 months, with the first five months consisting of residential training at FTIG followed by one year of mentorship back in their home communities.

For detailed eligibility requirements and to begin the application process, visit www.dmva.pa.gov/Keystone StateChallengeAcademy and choose the Eligibility and Admissions page. To have an

application mailed or to talk with someone about the program, contact the academy at RA-MVPACHAL LENGE@pa.gov, 717-8617767 or 717-861-8831.

The KSCA is a joint effort between the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) and the National Guard Bureau in consultation with the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE).

Cadets are introduced to the military structure and focus on eight core components: academic excellence; physical fitness; leadership/followership; responsible citizenship; job skills; service to the community; health and hygiene; and

life coping skills. Graduates often receive high school credits, credentials or a GED. There is no tuition cost to attend. Meals, housing, uniforms and school supplies are provided at no charge.

Since the ChalleNGe program’s inception in 1993, more than 200,000 young people have completed the program nationwide. The program has been recognized with awards.

The National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program currently operates 39 Youth ChalleNGe sites in 30 states and territories. The program is both federally and state funded.

More details can be found at the previously mentioned website.

Veterans’ Trust Fund grants awarded

Twelve Pennsylvania county Veterans Affairs offices have been awarded $150,000 in grants, and 21 charitable or Veteran Service Organizations have received $650,000 in grants from the Veterans’ Trust Fund (VTF), administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA).

The VTF is funded by Pennsylvanians who voluntarily make a donation when applying for or renewing their driver’s license, photo ID, or motor vehicle registration. Additionally, the VTF receives proceeds from the sale of the Honoring Our Veterans and Honoring Our Women Veterans license plates and private donations. Since the grant program began in 2013, a total of more than $6.6 mil-

lion has been awarded to organizations that serve Pennsylvania veterans.

Grantees slated to receive funding identified over $2 million in matching funds pledged toward grant-funded initiatives. Combined with the VTF grants, the fundraising efforts will result in more than $2.8 million for veterans’ initiatives in Pennsylvania over the next two years.

A total of $150,000 in grant funding was available for new, innovative, or expanded programs or services provided by county directors of Veterans Affairs or the Pennsylvania Association of County Directors of Veterans Affairs. The three areas of emphasis for grantees in this category were veterans’ outreach,

transportation services, and homelessness.

Among the grantees was the Chester County Office of Veterans Affairs, which receive $15,000 to provide outreach and awareness services to veterans.

The VTF grant also identified $650,000 in funding available to veteran service organizations with 501(c)(19) status and nonprofit, 501(c)(3) charitable organizations with a mission of serving Pennsylvania veterans. Funding priorities for grants in this category were transportation services, behavioral health initiatives, homelessness, and employment and education.

The grantees include Building Bridges Foundation at Anderson Farm in Conestoga,

receiving $40,000 to provide interactive equine therapy to veterans; the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank in Harrisburg, $40,000 to support the Military Share program; Good Karma Garage in Harrisburg, $39,100 to pro-

vide reduced vehicle repair costs and services to veterans; Guitars for Vets, Chapter 90, in Lancaster, $4,950 to provide therapeutic services to veterans; and rabbitCARES in York, $35,000 for transportation services to

veterans.

All grant awards are contingent upon the completion of a fully executed grant agreement.

To learn more about the VTF and to donate, visit www.donate.dmva.pa.gov.
