Comets Marching Band in Step With New Outlook

The Penn Manor High School marching band is proving that less can be more.

The decision to condense band camp into five 10-hour days and trade competitions in exchange for festivals is already having a positive impact.

There are 57 members this year as the Comets’ band tries to build back up to pre-COVID numbers.

“It’s up a few from last year,” band director Andrew Johnson said. He noted that the increase can partially be attributed to “this being the first year we’re not going to go to competitions, and the change in the program and the change in just the overall environment and philosophy how we are approaching band. The schedule is a lot more manageable for students and families this year.”

During band camp from

Aug. 4 to 8, there were built-in breaks and an hour for lunch.

“The idea this year was to shrink the amount of days of band camp, extend the hours a bit, but just take some of the time commitment away from students and free up their lives a little bit,” Johnson said.

The band members are getting accustomed to a technology called Ultimate Drill Book, which students and staff members can use to track movements of the musicians. The

Bible2School Penn Manor (B2SPM) will kick off the school year with a bus prayer drive from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24.

Anyone interested in making the trip should arrive by 2:50 p.m. at Faith Bible Fellowship Church at 151 Donerville Road, Lancaster.

“We will go to all seven of the elementary schools, stopping at each one to pray over them and pray for the children that will be attending the Bible2School Penn Manor classes,” said B2SPM executive director Jocelyn Hrovath. “Everyone is

The second annual Millersville Lions Club Car, Truck, & Bike Show promises to be entertaining for aficionados and people who simply enjoy seeing classic vehicles.

The event will be held rain or shine on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Philip the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, 2111 Millersville Pike, Lancaster.

Lion Jim Kalenich said the decision to include motorcycles was a big hit at the inaugural event.

Owners who register their vehicles on or before Saturday, Aug. 30, will pay a discounted fee to enter. Call Eric Dumm at 717-682-1138 for more information. Registration will also take place from 9 to 10 a.m. on the day of the event. There is no admission charge for spectators. Proceeds will benefit Blue Rock Fire Rescue. “That’s what we’re doing this for,” said Kalenich. The Millersville Lions Club has been a longtime supporter of the fire company. Two years ago, the Lions gave each Blue Rock member a $75 gift card. Kalenich said, “We usually give money, and we thought we would get the community more involved and see if they help us raise money, rather than us going out and trying to raise it a different way. We thought people can enjoy (the car show) a little bit better.”

Blue Rock Fire Rescue will have representatives and apparatus at the event. The fire company recently began a capital campaign to raise money for a new $10 million firehouse.

Pet Walk and Fundraiser Planned

ClassONE Property Restoration Inc. will hold its second annual ClassONE “Save Our Pets Project” pet walk and fundraiser event on Sunday, Sept. 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Amos Herr Park in Landisville.

All proceeds from the event will go towards purchasing pet oxygen mask kits and supporting other pet emergency services, such as funding the Pennsylvania Animal Response Team (PART) and the ClassONE Paw Grant. These grants help cover adoption-related fees for families looking to adopt a pet after losing their own in a fire.

This family-friendly event welcomes participants and attendees of all ages, with or without pets. It promises a variety of activities, including petfriendly vendors, a drawing for prizes donated

LASN Sets Meeting

Lancaster Area Sewing Network (LASN) will present “Creative Mending” by Laura Tanzer on Monday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m. at Lancaster Friends Meeting House, 110 Tulane Terrace, Lancaster.

The hourlong presentation will explore sustain -

ability through the use of creative mending. Tanzer will discuss creative ways to mend and extend the life of a garment.

Tanzer is a sustainability artisan, textile artist, clothing engineer, entrepreneur, and educator. She works with textiles, sculpting wearable art for the body.

She uses remnants, vintage and deadstock, choosing only natural fiber materials. Her skills include illustration, patternmaking and

welcome to join, and we’ll be riding the new-to-us Bible2School Penn Manor bus that God provided for us.”

B2S Penn Manor contracts with Shultz Transportation Co. and Eschbach Bus Service to help with transporting students from their schools to places of worship.

“Our board had been praying and fasting for God to provide something with busing because it plays such a huge part in our weekly classes,” said Hrovath. “We had reached out to Eschbach to ask if they would consider working with us to get a bus for this ministry, and they offered a deeply discounted used bus.”

A few days earlier, Kim and Greg Smith had reached out to B2SPM and stated they had been praying about providing a gift to B2SPM through the Ryan Smith Foundation they started in memory of their late son. Unbeknownst to them, the monetary gift was the same amount as the cost of the bus. Two anonymous donors came forward to help cover costs of CDL training for vol-

unteers, and Fleet Graphix provided a discount on a wrap for the vehicle. Hrovath stated that people should come on the bus excursion “if they have a heart for children to learn about Jesus during the public-school day. This prayer drive will promote that and will encourage the families to register their children for this program.”

B2S Penn Manor is an elective class that students can sign up for at their elementary schools. “In these classes, we talk about morals and values from the Bible, and the children are impacted by it, and the teachers and the school see a difference in children after they’ve been attending these classes,” Hrovath said. “So the point of the prayer drive is to get families to understand the need for this program in the district and also register children.”

B2SPM is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that began in 2021 when a group of LeTort Elementary moms got together for coffee and learned about release time, which is a national

statute that allows children attending public school to receive religious education of their choice during the public-school day, Hrovath said. “One of those moms, Heather Myer, knew that God was calling her to start this program, and she started it in the fall of 2021 with about 20 children from LeTort Elementary,” Hrovath added.

B2SPM has grown to serve over 400 children last school year across all seven elementary schools in Penn Manor. There were 19 weekly classes held across the district. This coming school year, B2SPM is planning for 26 weekly classes to be held for second- through fifth-graders. Registration forms for the elective class are sent home with students early in the school year.

B2SPM is not affiliated with the Penn Manor School District. No taxpayer money is used, and there is no cost for students to attend B2SPM. “We provide every child with a Bible and a T-shirt and an hour Bible lesson once a week,” Hrovath explained. “We do crafts and activities that support the lesson, and we do worship time.” Classes are typically held during lunch or recess.

have a home church. They looked to Bible2School Penn Manor to connect them with that local church.”

Hrovath noted that B2SPM needs volunteers willing to commit to two hours one time a week to work in the classrooms or

All of the classes are held off of the school campus within a short bus trip. “Local churches in the Penn Manor School District have stepped up and offered free of charge to host these programs,” Hrovath said. All of the funds for the program are provided by local business owners, individuals, and churches.

“A lot of families want their children to learn biblical values,” Hrovath said. “Families today have very busy schedules, and so this is so convenient for them to be able to sign their children up and not have to provide transportation either way or take from after school activities or weekend activities. Our hope is that they will connect with the local church. We’ve had several families who have decided to start attending church because their children enjoyed the Bible2School Penn Manor program so much, or the local pastors were able to meet with their families or assist them in time of need when they were going through a difficult physical ailment or something and they didn’t

QUALITY Driveway

Penn Manor band boosters purchased subscriptions for each band member.

The Penn Manor marching band is preparing for their fall performance called “Mix Tape,” which will be performed at the 10 Comets’ varsity football games and four festivals. The set list will be made up of songs from “Guardians of the Galaxy,” including “Hooked on a Feeling,” which was originally recorded by Bjorn Skifs and Blue Swede and popularized by B.J. Thomas; “Mr. Blue Sky” by Electric Light Orchestra; “I Want You Back” by the Jackson 5; and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell.

“We just were throwing around ideas like Guardians of the Galaxy and how fun mix tapes are,” said Sara Masten, who is an assistant band director along with Josh Rowley. “We wanted to reconnect with the community this year and do stuff that everyone would recognize.”

The band directors consider the talents of the band members when choosing a show, but also look at other aspects.

“When we look at the shows and planning everything, if you know there’s a certain section that’s extremely strong and there’s a way to showcase it, we’ll

do that,” said Johnson. “But that’s not really the driving force behind it. It’s a consideration, but that’s not the big piece. It was just the right mix of the music that we wanted, difficulty level that we wanted, and it just fit all the categories that we were looking to hit for the season.”

Penn Manor is now part of the Pennsylvania Marching Band Coalition and will eschew competitions for four exhibitions at local schools - Saturday, Sept. 20, at Manheim Township; Thursday, Oct. 9, at Elizabethtown; Saturday, Oct. 18, at Lampeter-Strasburg; and Saturday, Oct. 25, at Ephrata. Penn Manor will also participate in the Millersville Parade on Saturday, Oct. 4.

“(The coalition is) more focused on the students than it is with all those judges’ scores and the feedback that they give,” said Johnson. “It’s really student-centered, and what’s awesome about it is that these students work so hard, and usually when you go to a competition, they’re performing for a smaller crowd and for none of the

other bands of the people who really will appreciate it.

But at the coalition festivals, every band watches the other bands, which is really cool.”

It was not an easy decision to switch from competitions to festivals. “It was not just an overnight thing where we decided we’re going to change course,” said Johnson, a Penn Manor graduate who is beginning his 12th year as band director. “We were really looking at what’s best for the overall health and well-being of the program and members and how to continue the program going forward in the future.”

The plan is off to a promising start with the increase in band members.

“The big piece that we’re continuing to hear from incoming members is the reason why they wouldn’t join is because they just look at our calendar and our schedule, and they see the number of Saturday commitments, they see the number of summer commitments, and it’s huge,” said Johnson. “We’re trying to keep the integrity of the program and keep high expectations for everybody, but maybe dial back the amount of time they have to actually commit outside of school, and the pressure of the competition is off. The quality will still be there. We’re still expecting that same quality from them, but we’re taking away that the stress and pressure of those high-stakes competitions.”

Malta Band of Lancaster Plans Concert

The Malta Band of Lancaster will present a free concert to the public on Sunday, Aug. 31, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA, 800 Village Road, Lampeter. This year is the 113th year the band has been in existence, providing musical entertainment to the Lancaster area. The concert band consists of 45 to 50 musicians who get together because of their love of music and playing for the public. The concert will consist of a wide variety of musical styles and pieces for the audience to enjoy such as “Wind Beneath My Wings,” “Poet and Peasant Overture” and “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” Attendees should bring a blanket or a lawn chair for seating. In the case of rain, the event will take place at Lampeter United Methodist Church, 1101 Village Road, Lancaster.

LASN’s 2025 theme is “Sustainability,” with all monthly meetings touching on an aspect of the topic.

Masten added, “We’re just really excited. Vibes are good. We always make good progress, but this year especially, there’s a lot of pieces in place that are there, and the energy from the staff and the students and the boosters has collectively been working. We are all in a really good place to start the year, so I think we’re going to have a fantastic year.”

LASN is a group for people who love to sew. Its members range from beginners to intermediate hobbyists to professional dressmakers. The group’s main focus is fitting and construction skills related primarily to garment sewing. It meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Monday of most months, with Zoom meetings held during the winter. Retreats, service projects, and a fabric swap are optional activities. For more information, contact lancastersews@ gmail.com.

Touchstone Foundation Expands Youth Programming

Touchstone Foundation has announced the expansion of its mental health mentorship programming.

The summer Rise Above program will be offered as a new after-school program or student club for Lancaster County high school students during the school year, expanding pathways for students to become youth mental health advocates.

The Rise Above program connects Lancaster County high school students with trusted adult mentors, including mental health professionals, teaching artists, and local leaders. The program aims to foster safe spaces for students to explore their identity, strengthen coping skills,

and gain confidence through community, creativity, and conversation. With grant funding from the Lancaster County Community Foundation’s Next Generation Grant, the Touchstone Foundation has developed a new curriculum for Rise Above after-school programs. The curriculum is built around three key modules: discovering yourself, interacting with others, and looking to the future. Students will participate in guided sessions on sound healing, poetry, journaling, racial equity, safe teen dating, and more.

In response to a need for youth mentorship, Touchstone Foundation is funding additional mentorship

and youth wellness partnerships with organizations including City Limits Foundation Grant, Welcoming Connections, YWCA Lancaster, Big Brothers Big Sisters of South-Central PA, The Hood Hippie Love Yourself, Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, Community Wellness, Community Services Group, Bench Mark Program, 415 East Recording, and Soliman Photography & Videography. Touchstone Foundation is a nonprofit organization that has focused on elevating the mental well-being of youths and children in Lancaster County for 25 years.
