In May 2022, Lancaster Conservancy unveiled a $21 million campaign for the protection and restoration of nature in Lancaster County. It is the first major, multi-year initiative in the organization, which has operated for over 50 years. As of this past spring, over $17 million had been raised for the cause; $4.5 million was pledged by the board of directors and the rest stemmed from the major contributions of over 70 community members. BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD Max Ludewig has been deeply entwined with the music community in Lancaster for over a decade. He joined his first band, Magnolia, in 2012 and has remained active in countless projects over the years since. “I always loved listening to music, and in eighth grade my friends wanted to start a punk band,” said Ludewig. “I didn’t want to be left out, so I joined. It gave me a good reason to pick up the guitar my mom had bought me the previous year that I hadn’t touched yet.” The group performed at multiple venues throughout Ludewig’s years as a student at Manheim Township High School, including a venue he began running himself. Beat Mountain, as it was called, saw not only local artists perform but also touring bands from outside the state. After graduating high school in 2017, Ludewig attended Millersville University, studying in the music industry program. The program offered him a wealth of knowledge on all sides of the industry, from management to production to performance. He spent a semester interning at The Kaleidoscope, a local recording studio, where he was able to acquire hands-on experience working with bands and watching them undergo the recording process from setup through mastering. Ludewig graduated from Millersville University in 2021 and continued working with The Kaleidoscope for a few months following, as well as with Millersville music venue Phantom Power. Ludewig has recorded multiple albums and toured as a member of various projects, recently playing an East Coast tour with his band, Fragile Like Life After. The tour saw the outfit perform in Philadelphia, New Jersey and Virginia, where it debuted music from its upcoming album titled “(I don’t think they’re coming).” “We use inspiration from bands such as Karate, The Kidcrash and Johnny Foreigner, but we definitely have our own sound that combines slowcore, math rock and screamo,” said Ludewig. Fragile Like Life After consists of Ludewig as the lead vocalist and guitar player, bassist Adrian Alicea and drummer ChrisAmongCopeland.hisother musical endeavors, Ludewig also writes and performs melancholic, acoustic songs for his solo project, Weak Lungs, a moniker he began using in 2017. “I decided to use the name Weak Lungs as a reference to the asthma that plagues me in my everyday life,” said Ludewig. When asked where he sees himself in five years, Ludewig noted that he would like to operate a music venue of his own and be able to tour the country at least twice a year. “What I want people to get out of my music the most is the same amount of emotion that I do,” Ludewig said. “I love sharing the songs and being able to tour and see parts of the country I haven’t been to before.” To find his music or more information, search for “Fragile Like Life After” on Facebook, Instagram, Spotify or Deezer.

BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD When Lancaster resident Paul Anselmo answered a phone call from an unknown number, it only took a few words for him to know exactly who it was. It had been 53 years and 11 months since Paul last spoke to his friend and former Navy colleague Peter. “As soon as I heard his voice, I knew it was him.” Paul said. Peter was visiting Edison, NJ, Paul’s hometown, and said curiosity motivated him to reach out. “Being there reminded me of Paul, and I wondered where he was and what he was up to.” said Peter. “I searched online and called a few different Paul Anselmos before I finally got ahold of him.” The two organized for Peter and his wife to come to Lancaster so Peter and Paul could reunite in person. Paul graduated high school in 1966, just as the Vietnam War was coming to a head. His mother urged him to join the Navy reserves, as he would be at risk of being drafted into the Army unless he attended college. Paul and Peter first kindled their friendship aboard the USS Essex, an aircraft carrier that they were both assigned to in the repair division during the Cold War. The pair weathered many experiences together during their service, from a Russian plane plummeting into the sea beside their vessel to anti-war protestors attempting to get them to See Navy Reunion pg

Lancaster Conservancy is an accredited land trust that was founded in 1969 by local naturalists, fishers, hunters and farmers to acquire and protect natural lands. Over the course of its existence, more than 8,000 acres have been acquired, and they are protected and maintained to this day. The organization competes with developers to purchase land at auctions so that the natural habitat is preserved and kept open for the public. “If we don’t do it now, it won’t be around,” said Fritz Schroeder, senior vice president of community impact for the conservancy. “People want access to the land. We protect and preserve it for generations to come.”
Eleven million dollars will be used to protect 10,000 acres by the year 2030, which is twice the amount of land preserved up until 2015. Funds are needed for acquisition costs for land in both Lancaster and along the Susquehanna that is rising in cost faster than inflation. The conservancy often struggled to raise the money needed to purchase land in time, as it can be bought within days once for sale. The campaign will allow a more proactive approach to be taken, with funds already allotted once land becomes available. The final $3 million raised from the initiative will be applied to the education of over 10,000 community members, primarily through the Climbers Run Nature Center. The nature center sits on 113 acres of land, located along Frogtown Road in Pequea, and serves to educate students, families, hikers and volunteers. The center includes hands-on learning activities that offer immersive insight on the natural world, accomplished in partnership with area schools, Scout troops and education organizations. The funds raised from this portion of the goal will be used to improve the nature center by adding outdoor classrooms and two pedestrian bridges and modernizing the facility. learn how to become involved with the campaign,

The campaign is divided into three primary goals: restore, protect and educate. Seven million dollars of the funds raised will be allocated for restoring the thousands of acres acquired by Lancaster Conservancy, as it continues its work to balance the needs of the habitat with the demands of visitors. “Some of these trails are loved to death, with worn infrastructure and parking lots that don’t have enough room for visitors,” said Schroeder. “We want to maintain these areas longterm and make sure they can accommodate the many people who enjoy them.” Half of the money raised for this goal will be invested in projects to restore biodiversity, water quality and ecosystems; the other half will be applied to the stewardship endowment for future preservation of the land.

After leaving the Navy and parting ways, Paul and Peter each found success in their respective careers. Paul’s father worked in heating and plumbing, and after a fouryear sabbatical Paul joined the field. He ran his own business and worked in plumbing for 39 years; he and his wife moved to Lancaster nine years ago. “Paul did exactly what I thought he would do,” said Peter. “He’s always been
a straight shooter and a solid person.” Peter began working as a pipeline welder and attended the University of Massachusetts. An internship in Washington, D.C., led him to a career with the Department of Labor, where he worked in arbitration and mediation for 30 years. His work brought him to Virginia, where he currently lives with his“Whetherwife. you’re serving for patriotic reasons or you’re just doing it before you start your career, you learn what you can and do your time,” said Peter. “When you form a bond with someone in that context, it’s a strong one. You think about those people when you leave.” Paul concurred and said he has been hoping to reconnect with others who served on the Essex for many years. The pair recalled old stories and brought each other up to speed on the events of the many decades they spent apart, proving that some bonds are stronger than the test of time. frompg

Josh Sharp has been a member of Boy Scouts since the age of 11. Several volunteers assisted Josh Sharp with the project.
The second part of his project at the pool will consist of installing a new flagpole, which he is still fundraising for; 50% of the proceeds from SECA’s recently held pull-up competition will benefit the cause. Sharp also mentioned that Pack 87 is looking for new members, as is Troop 76G, a recently started girls’ troop. For more information, https://beascout.scouting.org/.visit
Resource Rentals offered to let him use one of its trenchers, allowing the volunteers to complete the installation within five hours. Sharp first became a member of the Boy Scouts when he was 11 years old. “I’ve wanted to be in it as long as I could remember,” said Sharp. “My dad and his dad were both Eagles, and I joined as soon as I could.” The program provides members with a plethora of opportunities, both throughout the community and within the organization. In 2019, Sharp and his troop attended the World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia, where they were able to connect with Scouts from around the world. Over 50,000 Scouts were in attendance. Boy Scouts are also able to get hands-on experience with shooting sports and attend various camps throughout the year; recently Sharp participated in a camp that included a rock climbing program. “It’s been a nice thing and a good place for me to go and work with other guys,” said Sharp. “As I enter adulthood, I’m using everything being in the Scouts has taught me to start my next chapter of life.”

When tasked with finding a project for Boy Scouts, Eagle Scout Josh Sharp turned his attention to the SECA pool complex, specifically, its sound system. “I started thinking about a year ago that there was a need for it,” said Sharp, who is also a lead lifeguard at the pool. “The speakers were falling apart and in a messy state.” He brought his idea to the pool manager, who was entirely supportive along with the rest of the staff.Sharp began with raising the funds for the new sound system, which cost $1,200. After receiving donations and financial support from local businesses and organizations such as Paul Risk Construction, Susquehanna Ford and the Ancient Order of Croaking Frogs, he raised the remainder of the money through the sale of subs and EcoTechalsosandwiches.pretzelSharppartneredwithtomapthe electrical lines at the pool to avoid any issues while digging for the Onceproject.allof the necessary materials were acquired, Sharp assembled 15 volunteers consisting of his troop members and other pool staff and members. Fête en Noir is a fundraiser for the Mount Bethel Cemetery, noted Hohenadel, who is a board member of the Friends of Mount Bethel Cemetery and the cemetery itself. The event will be held on Friday, Sept. 9, at the cemetery, 700 Locust St. Entrance to the grounds will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the event will run from 6 to 9 p.m. Seating is limited for the Fête en Noir, and a discount will be available for tickets purchased through Wednesday, Aug. 31. Participants should bring their own picnic to enjoy at tables set up throughout the front half of the cemetery. “We supply tables, chairs and linens,” Hohenadel explained. “People can bring a canopy if they want to, or additional tables for their food. They can use their imagination to make the event as downhome or a chic as they want it to be.” This is the fourth year for the Fête en Noir, and this year’s event will feature live music from The Kracker Beez.
The three-piece band performs classic party rock ’n’ roll music.Proceeds from the event will benefit the cemetery and will be used for maintenance and lawncare, among other expenses, Hohenadel stated. The cemetery is the final resting place for many people who played key roles in Columbia’s history. It’s full of interesting statuary and striking grave markers, she said, adding that Fête participants are encouraged to walk around and explore the grounds. “It’s just a fun time to enjoy a picnic, socialize, dance to some great music and chat with your neighbors,” she said. The Fête en Noir is sponsored by the Columbia Fraternal Association, the Foresters of America Court Susquehanna 235, the American Legion Paul Revere Leber Post 372, the Columbia Lions Club, KleenRite Corporation, Melanie B. Scheid Funeral Directors, Nikolaus & Hohenadel, and Truist Bank. of Mount Bethel Cemetery at 717-681-6768
