The Millersville Woman’s Club will hold a meet-and-greet picnic on Thursday, Aug. 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Millersville Borough’s Freedom Memorial Park in Pavillion C near the flower garden maintained by club members. The park is located off Route 999. Area women interested in supporting the Penn Manor community are invited to attend. Hot dogs and lemonade will be available. Attendees may learn about the scholarships and organizations that the club funds and the art activities and programs it offers to its members. There is no obligation to join. Hospice & Community Care’s 34th annual Labor Day Auction will be held at the Solanco Fairgrounds, 101 Park Ave., Quarryville, on Saturday, Sept. 1, and Monday, Sept. 3, beginning each day at 7:30 a.m. with Amish-made food, specialty auctions, and packed schedules. The Labor Day Auction is free to attend, with proceeds from winning bids and food sales benefiting patients and families receiving hospice and palliative care and bereavement support. The two-day event will feature new and used items up for bids, a furniture auction, an array of gift certificates and gift baskets, and five specialty auctions. The specialty auctions on Sept. 1 will feature plants, artwork, and days of care. Through the auction for days of care, folks will be able to contribute directly to patient care. Siloam Ethiopia will host a fundraising meal of common Ethiopian dishes on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Ethiopian Evangelical Church in Lancaster, 175 Church St., Landisville. “(The 9/11 Stair Climb) gives everybody a chance to pause and remember 343 firefighters who died and what they sacrificed that day,� explained Lancaster 9/11 Stair Climb committee chair Scott Yuill. “It’s our chance to honor those 343,� added committee member Joyce Mokros. The eighth annual Lancaster 9/11 Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 9, at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Registration for participants will open at 8 a.m., and the event will start at 9 a.m. with a time of calisthenics. See 9/11 Stair Climb pg 3

The pattern of 5-5-5-5 will be sounded at the start of the 9/11 Stair Climb. The bell used for the event previously hung on a fire engine used by the EPFC. The 9/11 Stair Climb is typically attended primarily by first responders, but anyone is welcome. “(This is) a chance for firefighters to remember, since we are involved with the same job they did,” Yuill said. “Whenever we go out on a call, we run the risk of not coming back.” There is a cost to participate in the 9/11 Stair Climb. Event Tshirts will be included in the registration fee for those who sign up by Friday, Aug. 24. After that date, folks may register at the event, but the availability of shirts will not be guaranteed. The silent auction of a framed poster featuring the badges of the 343 deceased firefighters will be held during the climb. The proceeds from the auction and the event registration fees will go to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the counseling services unit of the New York Fire Department, which assists the survivors and bereaved families from 9/11. Last year, Lancaster’s event was ranked 13 out of 47 events in total amount raised. For more information or to register for the event, readers may visit www.lancasterstair climb.org. Penn State Extension in Lancaster County will offer a food preservation class, Pickling (Quick Pickles), on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Attendees will review the basics of water bath and atmospheric steam canning for processing pickled products, which include pickles, other pickled vegetables and fruits, and relishes. band is composed of lead singer, guitar player, and songwriter Jesse Eisenbise; mandolinist and winner of the 2014 Watermelon Park Fest mandolin contest Wade Yankey; upright bassist and tenor vocalist Jeff Campbell; banjoist, bass vocalist, dobro player, and winner of the Telluride Bluegrass Festival banjo contest Mark Rast; and fiddler, baritone vocalist, and winner of the 2015 Deer Creek Fiddler’s Convention bluegrass fiddle contest Joe McAnulty. Local students from the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC) won awards at the 2018 SkillsUSA Championships, held in Louisville, Ky., on June 27 and 28. Vi Nguyen, a Lancaster resident and a student at the Willow Street LCCTC campus, received the High School Gold Medal in Dental Assisting and a Skill Point Certificate. Nichole Kilby, a Holtwood resident and a student at the Willow Street LCCTC campus, received a Skill Point Certificate in Dental Assisting. Loe Say, a Lan-
caster resident and a student at the Mount Joy LCCTC campus, received a Skill Point Certificate in Sheet Metal. The SkillsUSA Championships event is held annually for students in middle school, high school or college/postsecondary programs as part of the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference. This year’s participants were invited to the event to demonstrate their technical skills, workplace skills and personal skills in 102 hands-on occupational and leadership competitions.
Industry leaders planned the competitions and evaluated the contestants based on their standards for entry-level workers. Skill Point Certificates were awarded in 72 occupational and leadership events to students who met a predetermined threshold score in their competition, as defined by industry. Couple Marks 40th Anniversary High school sweethearts Robert “Bob” Lawrence and Tamalyn “Tami” Jo Heim of Willow Street celebrated their 40th anniversary on June 10. They were married on June 10, 1978, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Auburn. Bob is a 1978 graduate of the United States Air Force Academy. He retired as a lieutenant colonel after a 23-year Air Force career as a B-52 instructor pilot, and currently he serves as a Southwest Airlines captain. Tami is a 1980 graduate of Texas Tech University and earned the rank of captain in the Air Force as an executive officer. She has been a stay-athome wife and mother for more than 30 years. Youths Re-enact Pioneer Trek Beginning in the 1840s, more than 70,000 Latter-day Saints made the trip from Nauvoo, Ill., to Salt Lake City, Utah, utilizing handcarts and wagons. To reenact these journeys by taking a 15-mile trek, a total of 93 youths from the York and Lancaster congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints convened at Camp Liahona in Caledonia, near Chambersburg, from June 28 to 30. The youths, between the ages of 14 and 18, were organized into nine families, each with an adult ma and an adult pa. They dressed in pioneer-style clothing. During their journey, they pushed and pulled handcarts filled with provisions and personal items. They slept under the stars at night, and they had to leave their cellphones behind. On June 29, after packing up the camp, the families hiked approximately 4 to 5 miles, stopping periodically to eat, rest, and set up camp. Their meals were pioneer recipes cooked in Dutch ovens. In the afternoon, the youths participated in activities similar to ones the pioneers would have enjoyed, such as stick pull, stick ball, hoop toss, threelegged races, horseshoes, trap ball, hoop roll races, a ring toss, a cornhole toss, a tomahawk throw, sack races, and more, including a square dance with a country band. They also learned skills, such as black powder rifle shooting, candle making, and butter making, and they held testimonial meetings. In the morning on June 30, they packed their burdens onto the handcarts to take a final 3mile trek to their starting point. On July 24, Latter-day Saints celebrated Pioneer Day as a reminder of the hardships endured by the pioneers on their trek. Pioneer Day commemorates that day in 1847 when Brigham Young and the first wave of Saints arrived in Salt Lake City. The trek occurs every four years.

Three Penn Manor High School students have placed in the top four in the state in a stock market simulation competition that drew more than 700 participants from across Pennsylvania. High school senior Kyle Mowery placed first, junior Jamar Gordon placed third, and senior Zachary Schucker placed fourth in the StockTrak How the Market Works competition. Teams of students were asked to manage a hypothetical investment of $100,000 in stocks, bonds, and mutual funds over 10 weeks. They made buying and trading decisions based on the stock market and were ranked based on the amount of money their investments made. The statewide competition was sponsored by the Pennsylvania Council on Financial Literacy. Kyle, Jamar and Zachary learned about the stock market from Penn Manor economics teacher Chris Meier, who has been using stock market simulations in his classes for years.

Guot, one of the Lost Boys of Sudan, was one of thousands of boys who escaped a Sudanese civil war by walking more than 1,000 miles across east Africa. Guot grew up in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. He was able to immigrate to the U.S., become a citizen, and earn a GED diploma. A chance meeting with Kroehler, then the minister at First United Methodist Church, eventually led Guot to Lancaster, where he lived for four years and graduated from Lancaster Bible College. He then moved to Wilmore, Ky., where he graduated from Asbury Theological Seminary. Guot has been able to serve his hometown people in Bor, South Sudan, through SRM and a separate nonprofit that is

The Lancaster County Academy (LCA) recently received a $500 mini-grant from the Lancaster County School Counselors Association to be used to help motivate high school students who are at risk for not graduating. The recipient of the grant school counselor and service learning coordinator Deborah Schmidt saw that many of her students had poor time management skills and lacked the necessary motivation to complete graduation requirements. To address this need, Schmidt compiled a
series of four lesson plans centered around goal setting. Lessons included creation of a vision board depicting students’ future lives, understanding how to write and implement effective goals, how to devise a monthly goal planning calendar, the importance of finding an accountability partner, how to overcome obstacles, and designing a chart to keep track of their progress. Students at the LCA participated in all goal setting lessons and were asked to come up with both a personal and school goal. Students were also told that if they completed at least one high school course during a threemonth period and had good school attendance, that they would be invited on a field trip to the YMCA’s Camp Shand. Outdoor activities at the camp would include a high and low adventure ropes course with a zipline, nature hike, and campfire circle. Grant funds were used to pay for lesson materials, as well as the field trip expenses. Results of the grant were that students gained a 41 percent increase in knowledge about goalsetting. After implementation of the goal setting lessons and incentive, high school graduation rates increased from 16 students in 2017 to 19 students in 2018. Students commented that the goal setting lessons were helpful and they enjoyed the field trip so much that they hope the school does it again in the future. LCA is an alternative public
high school for students ages 16 to 20 and is located in the Park City Mall. The school was founded to help students who have not succeeded in the traditional high school setting. Reasons students attend LCA may include chronic medical conditions, being pregnant or parenting, mental health issues, substance abuse issues, returning from court placement, or having family issues. Students who graduate from LCA receive a diploma from their sponsoring school district. Since its inception, LCA has graduated more than 800 students.

“Voices of Conscience: Peace Witness in the Great War” is a traveling exhibit that remembers the stories of people of faith who opposed the war. The exhibit examines key questions such as: “Who speaks for peace in times of war?”; “What am I willing to fight for?”; “Is paying for war participating in war?”; and “Who are the voices of conscience today?” The exhibit will be held in the Crossings Meeting Room at Landis Homes, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. The entrance is via the main entrance of the new Calvin G. and Janet C. High Learning and Wellness Center at Landis Homes. The display is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 19, through Wednesday, Sept. 26, and will be open daily from 2 to 7 p.m., with other hours by appointment. An opening reception will take place at 2 p.m. on Aug. 19. A century ago, the United States had just entered “The Great War.” While many endorsed the effort, there were persons who could not in good conscience be involved in the killing of other humans. Often at great cost, even including death in a few cases, they spoke
through their words and actions of a different path. A series of educational meetings will be held alongside the exhibit, focusing on conscientious objection to war. “Voices of Conscience: The Witness of Conscientious Objectors in WWI” will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 27, at Martindale Mennonite Fellowship Center, 352 Martindale Road, Ephrata. The program will feature a dramatic reading of the court martial trial of Elbert Hostetler. Dr. Steve Nolt, senior scholar at the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown College, will speak on peace churches and World War I, and the Conservative Anabaptist Service Program will make a presentation. Interested individuals may take a broader look at the conscientious objector experience at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30, at Lancaster Brethren in Christ Church, 1865 Fruitville Pike, Lancaster. Anne Yoder, peace collection archivist at Swarthmore College, will share from her work collecting the accounts of conscientious objectors. She will expand the narrative to include

Lancaster Church of the Brethren’s Starlight Tea Concert Series will begin its 2018-19 season with a return engagement by Musical Associates: A Chamber Chorus in Lancaster on Saturday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m. The church is located at 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster. Since 2003, Musical Associates has presented choral programs of music ranging from the Medieval Period to the present day. Under the direction of Lancaster Church of the Brethren director of music Emery DeWitt, the 30-voice auditioned chorus rehearses and performs only in the summer months, allowing area professionals the opportunity to hone skills and work on challenging repertoire without the pressures of the fall and spring academic seasons. The group’s 2018 concerts explore love in all its forms and in a variety of musical styles, with a particular focus on vocal jazz.
Along with several jazz love songs, the program will include Bob Chilcott’s “A Little Jazz Mass,” folk song arrangements by Cecilia McDowall, and “Heavenly Home,” a collection of three folk hymn settings by noted Church of the Brethren musician Shawn Kirchner. Farm Show Event Raises Funds During its Farm Show Weekend, the Lancaster Barnstormers raised $6,800 to support the mission of the youth program at the Lancaster County Agriculture Council. It is the third year the Lancaster County Agriculture Council has teamed up with the Barnstormers to organize the Farm Show, which took place from June 22 to 24. Farmers, agriculture business owners and employees, and 4-H and FFA students were among the 15,000 who attended the threeday event. Outside of the stadium, modern and antique tractors and other machinery were on display for attendees to check out. On June 23, live farm animals took over the outfield, including

cows, sheep, pigs, alpacas and rabbits. Agriculture-themed games were highlighted in between innings, such as alpaca races. Local dairy princesses were on hand to answer questions from the crowd. Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding was the guest of honor on June 23 at a pregame program. Redding also threw out the first pitch to start the game. The Lancaster County Agriculture Council also presented its science fair winners with the Lancaster Agriculture Innovation Awards. A $500 donation also was awarded to Lancaster County Career and Technology Center’s Animal Production Science and Technology program.
The Lancaster Interfaith Coalition, an organization that brings together people from all faiths, in conjunction with Church of the Apostles, United Church of Christ (UCC), will host a women’s interfaith luncheon on Sunday, Aug. 26, from 1 to 3 p.m. All women and their children are welcome to attend. The event will be held in Rader Park on the Church of the Apostles UCC campus, 1899 Apostle Way, Lancaster, in the pavilion. The luncheon’s purpose is to celebrate what women of all traditions and backgrounds have in common and what is unique about each of them.
