There’s a great new nonprofit in Lancaster County that’s been founded by Neffsville resident Greta Myers. It’s called “Neuro Neighborhood.”

“We used ‘neighborhood’ to give people a welcoming invitation to something bigger than themselves,” said Myers, who also serves as executive director of the organization. “Neighborhoods contain people who come together to support one another.

We all know how important it is to have a support system, and we felt that use of the title ‘neighborhood’ would exemplify our support.

“Our goal is to continue to get the word out so we can reach as many people as possible,” continued Myers. “The more people who know about the Neuro Neighborhood, the more people we can support.”

Founded in March of 2025, Neuro Neighborhood is an al l - vol u nte er or ganiz at ion designed to help people dealing with neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. Those neurological conditions can occur through injury or a deterioration of the central nervous system, which includes our brains and spinal cords.

For now, Myers is operating Neuro Neighborhood out of her residence.

The UDS Service Dogs Golf Tournament helps to raise funds necessary to sustain the service dog program. The dogs are trained from puppyhood by a team of volunteers and professionals to be partnered with individuals to help them live fuller lives. These individuals include people who have a mobility disability, people with autism, and veterans experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder. Additionally, UDS trains dogs to work in schools, helping children who struggle to learn in the classroom, and to serve as Ambassador Dogs that visit individuals and businesses to spread the word about the program and share love and joy with those they meet.

noticed in their research that they can predict relationship success or relationship failure by a couple of different points. And some of those points are whether or not people respond to each other’s bids for connection, and whether or not they handle or avoid conflict, and then if they do have a conflict, and it doesn’t go well, how well they repair. In this workshop, we’ll be talking about those things and how to make relationships a little bit better.”

Dennis noted that the seminar will help attendees form deeper bonds. “Circles of Strength is more psychologically based and tool-based,” she said. “There is a connection. We do a little bit of an icebreaker kind of thing in the beginning, and so people can kind of build that sort of connection. There are hands-on activities that we do, so people can try out the skills, and there’s usually some discussion in there.

I think one of the reasons that it’s important that we do this particular workshop is because we’re noticing that so many people are feeling lonely and disconnected.

And I think that this workshop will really help them to be able to understand that sometimes the way that they interact with each other, or the way that they communicate, or they solve their conflicts, really kind of adds to that sense of disconnection. I think that this is a really good workshop to help people to feel more connected in the workshop, but then also to take that out in their other relationships.”

“I’m really excited about being able to offer that, because when I did our other program - called Living Grace that we did last fall - so many of the people who participated in that identified (that) one of the issues they were really dealing with is a lack of understanding on the part of family members and friends of what they were going through. ... As I heard that repeatedly, I thought we needed to offer something that will help not just people going through a mental health crisis or particular challenges but for all the people around them, so they understand and can be a better support system for the people who are going through the crisis or the challenge or whatever it is they’re facing.”

Millersville Community Church’s Family Grace Group will meet from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on 10 consecutive Tuesdays, beginning Sept. 1.

Registration is required; the deadline is Saturday, Aug. 29.

“It’s based in biblical values and neuroscience,” said Dennis.

“You read a Scripture, and then you talk about that, and it’s relationships, and families, and mental illness. Then (they) do some small group study and talk about that. It’s for families, loved ones. It can even be for couples.

Couples can come together, especially if one of them is struggling with some mental health issues. Grace Alliance, which is the people that put out the curriculum for this, have done some studies that have found that if people kind of come and talk about things and work through things and learn some skills, which we do in each of the groups, that it really helps build that relationship and the ability for the loved ones and the caregivers to understand a little bit better if they’re not struggling with the mental illness or mental disorder.”

Heydt added, “One of the tools that I’ve heard from people that has really helped them is their faith. Obviously, there’s lots of components, lots of tools that we teach. … We don’t approach faith from a theological point of view where we’re teaching biblical doctrine, just kind of highlighting the importance of faith in our lives and sharing some stories among the group of how during some dark times, maybe someone’s faith really helped bring them through.

And I think that can be a real encouragement.”

The Moravian Center of Lancaster, 227 N. Queen St., second floor, will host its monthly trivia event on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 4 to 6 p.m. Doors will open at 3 p.m., and snacks will be available for purchase.

For one day, Columbia’s Janson Field will transform into a living museum, bringing the sights, sounds and rules of baseball’s earliest days back to life. On Saturday, Aug. 15, two vintage clubs will compete in a free doubleheader of 1864-style “base ball” (the original two-word spelling), a version of the game played by more than 400 teams across the country.

The games will begin at 11 a.m. at the park, 650 Cherry St. The event is possible thanks to the support of the Columbia Lions Club as part of the borough’s yearlong tricentennial celebration, and admission is free.

The matchup will pit the Keystone Club of Harrisburg against the Mechanicsburg Zouaves. Both teams recently competed with a total of 26 clubs in the Gettysburg National 19th Century Base Ball Festival, held July 18 and 19.

Even the names of the teams are based in history, said Rich Heinick, who was a founding member of the Keystones when the team formed more than a decade ago.

“Both clubs have borrowed their names from actual teams that played in those towns during the 1860s and 1870s,” he explained.

“The Zouaves were re-formed recently, and this will be their inaugural game. There will be extra uniforms available if anyone would like to try their hand at 1864 base ball.”

More than one sports historian has described this vintage sport as “a Civil War re-enactment with real bullets.”

The game will look familiar to today’s fans, except for two notable differences: Players compete without gloves, since they were not widely used until the early 1880s, and a ball caught after one hop known as “on the bound” - counts as an out.

“The bound rule changes the way everyone hits, runs and positions themselves on defense,” Heinick said. “It seems a little strange at first, but you can see how this made sense in the early days of the sport. After several years of debate,

the rule was amended in 1865 to make the game more challenging.

Even so, our players try to catch what they can on a fly, because we often play in open fields, and you never know which way a bounce will go.”

The ball closely resembles today’s baseball in size, weight and firmness, meaning players must rely on technique, and sometimes tolerate some pain, to field it barehanded. Pitchers throw underhand, batters overrun first base at their own risk, and any ball that first lands inside the first- and thirdbase lines is fair, even if it later rolls into foul territory. That rule keeps the corner infielders on their toes.

The games are fiercely competitive while maintaining a strong tradition of good sportsmanship.

Janson Field, a traditional baseball diamond built atop the borough’s former reservoir more than a century ago, has a rich baseball history. It once served as the home field for several Columbia semipro teams, including clubs led by player-manager Jimmy Sheckard, who grew up nearby and, at various points during his major league career, led the league in home runs, stolen bases, walks and slugging percentage. The field also welcomed Black barnstorming teams throughout the 1920s and 1930s.

The Aug. 15 doubleheader marks the fourth straight year the Keystones have included Columbia on their schedule, and once again several borough residents will take the field. Spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and a picnic lunch, and children will be invited onto the field to play between games. Portable restrooms will be available.

People who arrive early are invited to join the players for their annual walk across Cherry Street to Mount Bethel Cemetery to pay tribute to Samuel Young, the Columbia community leader credited with bringing organized base ball to the Susquehanna Valley in the early 1860s.

“The current store building has deteriorated to the point that a replacement/renovation is needed; simple repairs were no longer feasible,” said Zimmerman.

Some movement symptoms can include increased tone and reflexes in muscles, difficulty initiating movement and weakness affecting many muscle groups.

“Speech and breathing can be impacted as well, because both of these actions are controlled by our muscles,” she added. “Keep in mind that these symptoms are based in neurology; it is not as simple as going to the gym to get stronger.

Recovery from these types of muscle changes must include what we call neuroplasticity to help improve these symptoms or be creative to find compensatory strategies to allow full participation in life.”

One of Neuro Neighborhood’s most effective weapons in the fight against neurological disorders is activity or group activities.

Among the community events that Neuro Neighborhood sponsors and conducts are regular Red Rose Parkinson’s Support Group meetings; Adaptive Recreation Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Road,

Lancaster; and periodic Neuro Caregiver Support Group meetings at Wellness Merge Physical Therapy, 903 Nissley Road, Lancaster. All of those activities are free to attend, and some require preregistration at www.neuroneighborhood.org.

“We want people to know neurological conditions can happen to anyone, and if you or a loved one is diagnosed, there are people who want to help you navigate the challenges that you may be facing and support you in living a fulfilling life,” said Myers, a graduate of Warwick High School, who has a background in physical therapy. “We do not want people to isolate themselves or fear doing things based on a diagnosis. We encourage you to reach out to our specialized support, because, with (the) right support, you can thrive. In some of our most challenging times in life, we all need a neighborhood to count on.”

Overseen by a five-person board of directors, Neuro Neighborhood serves about 200 individuals, mainly adults from Lancaster County and surrounding areas.

Th e Lowe r S u s q u e h a n n a Archaeological Society will host a lecture on Sunday, Aug. 16, at 2 p.m. at the Blue Rock Heritage Center, 2251 River Road, Washington Boro.

Author and historian Adam Zurn will present “Capital Day: Lancaster and the Revolution,” a program exploring the events of Sept. 27, 1777, when the Continental Congress fled Philadelphia following the British victory at the Battle of Brandywine and temporarily established the nation’s capital in Lancaster. The presentation will draw upon the events surrounding Alexander Hamilton’s warning, the evacuation of important government papers, the secret journey of the Liberty Bell, and the brief but significant role Lancaster played during the American Revolution.

Zurn is the founder of Uncharted Lancaster, a history and adventure platform dedicated to uncovering the forgotten stories, legends, and hidden places of Lancaster County.
