He loved connecting with kids he taught through Penn Manor’s agriculture program and the FFA. “I watched him build kids up, ninth-graders who didn’t have a lot of presence,” Mindish said. “By the time they graduated, they were emceeing banquets. It was amazing to watch.” The Penn Manor agriculture program has been recognized by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and praised for its advancement over the years. Courses are offered on subjects ranging from environmental education to veterinary science, and the program has seen substantial growth over the last 30 years. “The program gives kids a home base just like a sport or music program would,” said Mindish. “They get to see opportunities for after they graduate. Some students decide to go to college, and others begin working on their family farm.” Participants in the program

are paired with other students in order to better achieve their goals; students with interests in veterinary science who lack the accommodations for their own animals are placed with students who may live on a farm and have the ability to house a large animal. “The difference a teacher can make for kids is incredible. We got so many cards and checks from Gus’ former students remembering the difference he made in their lives,” said Mindish. “He’s just one example of someone who really made a difference in the lives of so many students.” Those who wish to support the program and make a donation in Birchler’s memory can contact pmef2@penn manor.net. foundation. “The scholarship goes to the kids who would benefit the most, which is what he wanted.” Birchler spent his early years working on his family farm and enjoyed an adventurous life. He was an avid baseball player throughout high school and spent time working at Philco Ford as an industrial engineer after graduating. Unsatisfied with his position, he set his sights on joining the Air Force as a pilot. When his injuries from playing baseball prevented him from continuing training, Birchler decided to join the Navy instead and was assigned to a destroyer as a mail courier. After traveling the world during his service in the Navy, Birchler attended Penn State University, initially to become a veterinarian. He later changed his major to agriculture and earned a bachelor’s degree, eventually obtaining his doctorate. Despite his wealth of experiences and higher education, he always

Southern Lancaster County Community Night will be held at the Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, on Saturday, Aug. 13. Entertainment will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by a baseball game pitting the Barnstormers against the Lexington Legends at 6:30 p.m. The event has a set ticket price per person, with a discounted price being offered to Solanco community members and residents. Both presale and walk-up tickets will be available. Although an annual tradition, this year’s community night surpasses previous events in ambition and scale; organizers estimate that over 500 people will attend, and 20 to 25 vendors will be present. “Our goal is to make it seem like you’re on Main Street in the Southern End,” said Tate Weismandel, account executive

Games will take place in between innings, and a firework display will follow the end of the game. Weismandel also said the Barnstormers will recognize various Solanco community members. Returning to this year’s community night will be the Field of Dreams activity, where young baseball enthusiasts will have the opportunity to stand with their favorite player on the field during the national anthem. The Barnstormers will also offer free tickets to Solanco and Donegal Little League coaches and players who arrive in uniform. The stadium has several other events lined up following the community night: First responders’ night will be held on Sept. 16, and an event focused on the Solanco Fair is anticipated to take place later in September. “We see where fans are coming from,” said director of marketing Ronnie Ramone. “These are great opportunities for people to come out to the stadium.” Aug. 13 will also coincide with “Pink in the Park” night to raise breast cancer awareness. HUMC Slates GriefShare Hempfield United Methodist Church (UMC), 3050 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, will offer a GriefShare program to those who are grieving the loss of a loved one. The group will meet in room 124 on Mondays, Aug. 15 through Nov. 14, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. There will not be a meeting on Sept. 5. GriefShare is a Christianbased grief support group designed to help those who are grieving to face the challenges of losing a loved one and to move from mourning to joy. Each

GriefShare session includes a video, discussion, and personal study and reflection. Robin Murray and Joyce Crider will help to facilitate this session of GriefShare alongside Joyce Young, HUMC director of care and minister of visitation. The first Mountville Maker’s Market will be held at Froelich Park, 350 W. Main St., Mountville, on Saturday, Aug. 27, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 28, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission and parking will be free of charge. Over 100 vendors will be present, as well as several food trucks and nonprofits from the area. The event is coordinated by entrepreneur Megan Shank, who first started working with the Mountville pool while looking for locations that would be open to hosting the market. “Driving down Columbia Avenue, I remember thinking, ‘That would be the perfect spot,’” said Shank. “It was a long process to get the date approved, and I hope to make it an annual event.” Shank runs The Shank Shoppe from her home in Marietta, where she makes custom-designed pieces of apparel and home décor and plans events. “I’ve done smaller events but recently started dabbling into markets,” she said. “One of my biggest passions is celebrating what is local, and our area has a lot of talented artists and makers. So often you have to travel far for markets, so I thought, ‘Why not bring it here to celebrate Lancaster?’” The Crafted Cauldron, Lavender Lacy, The Schell Shack and LoriAnn’s ART, among other vendors, will sell their wares. Food will be available to purchase from food trucks such as J&J Famous Eats, Premium Shaved Ice and The Crazy Train.

Shank worked in the corporate world for over a decade before the COVID-19 pandemic and her daughter’s medical needs necessitated her transition to a full-time stay-at-home mother. “I was always creating on the side when I had time, but becoming a stay-at-home mom gave me more time and opportunity to create, and things really took off,” said Shank. “I started doing weddings, flowers and whatever people needed.” The Shank Shoppe has made custom T-shirts for the Manheim Township cheerleaders and frequently provided consulting and organizing services for other businesses. Recent endeavors include organizing the Marietta Christmas in July, drawing 57 vendors total. Shank is currently on the lookout for an indoor space to hold a fall and Christmas market this upcoming holiday season and planning multiple events for 2023. LCAA To Hold “Still Super” Yard Sale BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD

The Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA) will host its “Still Super” yard sale at 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, on Saturday, Aug. 27, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Spaces at the sale, measuring 10 by 10 feet, are available to the public for a set price, and vendors will need to bring their own table and display equipment. The deadline to register is Sunday, Aug. 21. Although LCAA has a consistent stream of offerings to the community, this will be the first year the yard sale has been held. “We thought this would be a great way to raise funds for the association,” said Patricia Keller, a member of the art association. “It’s also a nice way for artists to sell their work and get commission. It supports individuals as well as LCAA as a whole.” Donations are also being accepted for LCAA’s table, excluding large items, clothes and electrical appliances and devices. Donations may be dropped off at the LCAA on Thursdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. “The goal is just to raise funds any way we can,” said Keller. “The pandemic hurt us, and we’re trying to get back.” Similarly to LCAA’s Artist’s Attic sale, the yard sale will

Keller, a watercolor painter, has been a member for 35 years and has helped hang artwork at shows and volunteered time to help with several other projects. “We have a lot of youth classes,” Keller said. “I want young people to appreciate the arts. It’s important to explore your creativity because it affects so many other areas. Your creative mind affects every-

thing.” The LCAA is always accepting new members and volunteers of any age, with members being granted yearlong access to shows and activities such as art classes. Keller noted that the best ways to support the art association are to make a contribution and come see a show, all of which are free with an opportunity to donate. The Bench Mark Program serves youths in Lancaster County through physical wellness programs. The program started offering free personal training services to youths identified as at-risk by local high schools and community organizations. Horizons at Lancaster Country Day School provides counseling services for its students and strives to create a learning environment that develops students’ emotional intelligence in tandem with cognitive intelligence. With the grant, the school will be able to hire a temporary fulltime school counselor during the summer months. The YWCA Lancaster is increasing prevention education in its Sexual Assault Pre-

vention and Counseling Center. As the rape crisis center for the county, the center provides primary prevention education programs to the community. The Healthy Relationship Project (HRP) is a researched-based, traumainformed, and age-appropriate child sexual abuse prevention curriculum created by Prevent Child Abuse Vermont. The YWCA delivers the programs directly in schools to lower access barriers for children and families. CAP of Lancaster County hosts Play and Learn programs to serve families with children birth to age 5 in communities in Lancaster County that have limited availability of high-quality early learning opportunities. Each session consists of child-directed play, caregiver learning, a coordinated group activity, and intentional space for care-

givers to build social capital, as well as time for caregivers to explore resources with a focus on family well-being. Samaritan Counseling Center is expanding its Teen Hope program. Teen Hope is a mental health awareness program screening students for depression, anxiety, and suicide risk. The funding from the Touchstone Foundation will help Teen Hope address the needs of the community by updating its video for parent and student education so that internal training modules will have clear, concise, and consistent expectations and protocols for staff, interns, and volunteers in the schools. He served as principal for five years in the School District of Lancaster (SDoL) at the Phoenix Academy, an alternative middle and high school. He also served as an art teacher at all levels from elementary to high school at SDoL and at Dorchester County schools in Maryland, as well as in the roles of support teacher, instructional coach, and reading coach. Fair was named New Art Teacher of the Year in Maryland. In addition to teaching, he has coached soccer teams for many years, including last year as a co-coach for the LM middle school boys’ soccer team. This year, the Touchstone Foundation awarded $55,000 to five local organizations to increase accessibility and equity to youth mental wellness resources in Lancaster County. A team from Prevail Volleyball Club in Annville recently won the AAU 17U national championship, coming in first place out of 50 teams from across the United States and Puerto Rico. The competition took place from June 28 to July 1 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, and it marked the first time a team from Prevail won a national tournament. Among the team members were Joshua McCoy from Elizabethtown Area High School, Seth Graybill from Warwick High School, and Tanner Laukhuff from Garden Spot High School.

Laukhuff was also chosen as a 17U Club Division All Star. Additionally, the team was coached by Kasey Gentry, who is assistant coach of the Penn Manor High School boys’ volleyball team. Other team members were Andrew Holtry, Noah Gunderson, Luke Gibbs, Aden Mcinerney, Toby Waters, Kyler Holland, and Will Sierer. In Orlando, the team notched a record of 11-1. In pool play, the team beat Wisconsin, California twice, and Florida in straight sets, losing to Illinois. During crossover rounds, teams from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Puerto Rico were felled by the Prevail squad in straight sets. The local team also defeated Maryland in straight sets in the challenge round before beating Kentucky in the quarterfinals, also in straight sets. During the semifinals against Hawaii, Prevail won the first set before dropping the second and squeezing out a victory in the third set. In the finals, the Prevail team defeated Arizona in straight sets. The club team from Prevail primarily plays in local tournaments from December through February, resuming practices in June after the school volleyball season concludes.
