Herbs for everyone

The Conestoga Herb Guild will host its annual Herb Festival on Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Millersville VFW, 219 Walnut Hill Road. The free event will begin at 9:30 a.m., and it will feature multiple educational presentations, vendors and complimentary tea and coffee.

Members of Conestoga Herb Guild will begin to offer presentations at 9:30 a.m. A new presentation will begin each hour, and the sessions will cover topics such as medicinal and culinary uses for herbs, techniques for managing a garden and unique applications for common plants. One of the presentations will offer information specifically on ginger, which has been selected as the guild’s herb of the year. Ginger can be used in various recipes when cooking, but it also contains properties that help relieve nausea.

Another speaker will discuss a variety of methods to propagate and grow herbs in one’s backyard, after which a beekeeper will offer information on using native plants to support the growth of

the bee population.

Susan Atkins, president of the Conestoga Herb Guild, will speak on the subject of Calendula flowers, which she grows in her own garden. Calendula can be used to treat skin irritation and internal issues such as ulcers. Atkins will detail her own process of growing and harvesting

homemade pasta salad, caprese salad and a variety of baked goods. Vendors will sell items such as medicinal herbs, honey, wreaths, garden decorations, artwork and house plants.

The Herb Festival serves as one of the Conestoga Herb Guild’s largest annual fundraisers. A portion of the proceeds from vendors’ sales will assist the organization with covering its operational costs throughout the year.

the herb, which she then emulsifies and infuses with lavender to create a topical salve. Atkins will also explain the process of using the flower’s petals to make tea with medicinal properties.

Due to ginger’s status as the herb of the year, the herb guild will offer a station for the event’s attendees to make their own tea blend with ginger, fennel and peppermint. Members of the guild will also sell

Covered Bridge Classic celebrates the joy of riding

The Lancaster Bicycle Club exists to promote the sport of bicycling, advocate for the safety of riders and provide members with cycling opportunities. Few events exemplify that mission better than the Covered Bridge Classic.

On Sunday, Aug. 20, the 400member Lancaster Bicycle Club will stage the 44th edition of its annual Covered Bridge Classic at seven start/finish points across northern Lancaster County. Some 1,300

bicycling enthusiasts from points all along the East Coast will descend upon the county to celebrate the fellowship inspired by cycling.

The event is being presented as a ride, not a competition.

“The purpose is to draw in cyclists,” said Leslie Arnold, communications director for the Lancaster Bicycle Club. “It’s to offer a huge cycling event to the community. It’s an eclectic mix. Some are very serious cyclists. Some people do it because they are challenged by friends. Some make it part of their vacations.

The Conestoga Herb Guild began hosting the Herb Festival five years ago, and the event functions as a recruitment opportunity in addition to being a fundraiser. The organization will have a table open for attendees to register as official members. “I think many people, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, are looking to empower themselves and become healthier,” Atkins said. “More and more people are starting their own medicinal herb gardens and using herbs in cooking to take charge of their well-being.”

People want to see the covered bridges. That’s what draws people.”

From the seven start/finish points, participants are treated to rides of various length - 35, 50, 65 or 100 miles - through the Lancaster County countryside in the areas of Warwick Township, Ephrata, Manheim, Stevens and Hempfield. The 100-mile trek incorporates 14 of Lancaster County’s covered bridges into its journey.

All of the routes include rest stops, some of which feature mechanical support, parking and refreshments.

“Lancaster is not flat,” said

Arnold. “There aren’t steep, steep climbs, but we have climbs that are going to push you. The shortest course has the least amount of climbs, and the longest course has the most amount of climbs.”

The Covered Bridge Classic also serves as a fundraiser. From its participation, the Lancaster Bicycle Club is hoping to raise more than $10,000, some of which will be put back into the club, some of which will be funneled into community causes related to bicycling and some of which will go toward the maintenance of the covered bridges.

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

Since 1999, the Lancaster Bicycle Club has awarded $545,000 in grants mainly funded through the Covered Bridge Classic.

“It’s a huge way to give back to the community,” said Arnold. “The Lancaster Bike Club is all about advocating for cycling safety. We have social events throughout the year. We have different things for everybody, different types of rides for all levels of riders. Throughout the year, there’s always an effort to schedule a ride every weekend.”

In addition to its relaxed rides, the Lancaster Bicycle Club also organizes two other more formal rides - the Three

Creek Century and the Chocolate Tour.

The Lancaster Bicycle Club was formed in 1973, and six years later it presented its inaugural Covered Bridge Classic.

“Over the years, we’ve evolved,” said Arnold. “More people came in, and we became bigger and more complex. At one point, we had 600 members. It’s a pastime you can do, and there’s also more serious riders. The club has evolved to reflect the needs of the membership.”

Comets earn seventh straight Academic Award

For the seventh year in a row, the Penn Manor girls’ varsity volleyball team has earned a Team Academic Award from the United States Marine Corps/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).

The Comets were also named, for the sixth time, to the AVCA’s Team Academic Award Honor Roll for earning a cumulative GPA in the top 20% of all girls’ high school teams in the nation during the 2022-23 school year. Penn Manor was one of only five Pennsylvania high school teams to make the honor roll.

The team’s cumulative GPA was 3.67, and nine players earned GPAs of 4.0 or higher; these players are Abigail Andrew, Jordan Bailey, Janelle Bowmaster, Mackenzie Cassel, Haley Frey, Magnolia Garvey, Eliana Knaub, Cassidy McCollum and Lillie Swanson. The Comets’ roster also includes Jillian Kloc, Brianna Lee, Taylor Long, Lezlie

Nguyen, Maya Sugra and Alyssa Mattern.

McCollum had the highest GPA - 4.6 - and was a threetime Lancaster-Lebanon League All-Star, a District III All-Star and Penn Manor’s LL League Academic Award winner for 2022-23.

The Comets compiled a 10-7 record and upset Central Dauphin in the first round of the playoffs.

Head coach Tim Joyce attributes the team’s consistent success to its guiding principle of ACES - attitude, character, effort and skillemphasizing that the first three qualities must come first for skills to improve.

“Penn Manor’s strong (Advanced Placement) programs and dual-enrollment classes help our athletes maximize their academic potential,” he said. In addition, team members participate in a weekly Girls’ Volleyball Club, where athletes hold a study hall and peer tutor each other, Joyce said.

“But ultimately, Penn

Manor’s strong faculty and staff are at the foundation of it all, supporting our student-athletes at our matches

and in their classrooms and remaining flexible with their very busy schedules,” Joyce said.

A new chapter for Joyfully Made Fellowship

For over 15 years, Tami Shaub has operated a ministry known as the A-Team at Wesley Church in Quarryville. The group began as a youth praise and worship band, but many of its members were no longer able to participate as they grew older and went off to college or began working full time. The remaining members of the group were primarily those with special needs, and they loved having an opportunity to enjoy music together through the program. Many of these members explained to Shaub that although they loved the music, the most important aspect of the group was the fellowship.

Shaub decided to officially

create the A-Team to continue to provide her students with the comradery they had grown to love. The group would meet regularly to share a meal and to participate in a lesson or activity that incorporated music. Over the years, Shaub expanded the program by integrating field trips, support groups for parents of children with special needs and special outings like group bowling sessions. The A-Team also had its own Sunday school class at Wesley Church, but it encountered challenges with aligning the members’ schedule, as some of their parents attended church elsewhere.

In May, Shaub took an opportunity to overhaul the A-Team by creating a non-

profit organization under the name Joyfully Made Fellowship. She began to look for a building to base the ministry out of, which she hoped would resolve many of the group’s scheduling challenges. On June 1, Joyfully Made Fellowship officially acquired the building that formerly housed Mount Hope UMC, located at 75 Mount Hope Road in Quarryville.

Joyfully Made Fellowship opened its doors to students in July, and the new facility allows the organization to offer a sensory-friendly worship service and comradery between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Sundays. Parents are able to drop off their kids for the program and attend their regular service at another church.

Gap Relief Sale will celebrate 75th anniversary

The annual Gap Relief Sale will be held on Friday, Aug. 11, and Saturday, Aug. 12, at the Solanco Fairgrounds, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville. The fundraising event will include auctions, hot meals and live music, and the proceeds will support the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC).

On Friday, the auction preview and pork roast dinner will begin at 4 p.m. The preview will be open until 6:30 p.m., and meals will be available to purchase for eat-in or takeout until 7 p.m. From 6:30 to 7:15 p.m., a member of MCC will speak alongside a special offering, followed by group singing. The auction will officially kick off at 7:15 p.m.

On Saturday, the event will begin with a country breakfast that will consist of pancakes, sausages and eggs. After breakfast, auctions will begin at various times in each of the buildings at the fairgrounds.

In block one, a household item and craft auction will start at 8:30 a.m., followed by a large furniture auction at 11 a.m. Special items to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the sale will be available to bid on at noon, including a large quilt ornamented with the Gap Relief Sale logo. At 1 p.m., quilts and quilted wall decorations will be up for bids. In block two, farm equipment and workshop tools will

be among the items auctioned off at 9 a.m. In block three, a sale of children’s items will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by an auction of lawn furniture, shrubbery and other outdoor items. In block four, any excess items from the food stands will be available to purchase, including subs and pulled pork. From 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., a bounce house and barrel train rides will be available to children.

The first sale was held at the farm of Leon Summers in Gap. The event was created by locals who wished to support MCC, and it was held every other year until 1990, when it became an annual event. The sale changed locations multiple times before permanently relocating to the Solanco Fairgrounds.

All of the event’s proceeds will benefit MCC, which is head-

quartered in Akron. MCC is an international ministry of Anabaptist churches that acquires resources for the purpose of offering relief to communities around the globe that are in need. The special offering on Friday will be used to fund MCC’s relief efforts in Ukraine.

The items that will be available during the sale have all been donated by individuals and local businesses. Among the items is a restored 1951 Farmall tractor, provided by Double H Tractor Service in Ephrata.

“The sale gives the local community an easy way to support MCC while acquiring something you might need,” said Levi Glick, who is helping to coordinate the event.

To donate an item for the auction, interested parties may call 717-617-9746 to arrange for drop-off or pickup.

Lancaster author publishes nature story

“Adventures of Chickadee,” a new book by Germaine Suriyage of Lancaster, has been released by RoseDog Books.

Chickadees live in habitats at the edges of dense

forests. They are a common visitor at bird feeders and are especially attracted to sunflower seeds. They are friendly to humans and will feed from one’s hand.

When most of the backyard birds are gone for the winter, chickadees do not leave. They can survive even

the harshest winters.

“Adventures of Chickadee” is a story about how two chickadees leave their forest friends and venture into human territories looking for sunflower seeds. They see many things that are not familiar to them, but they find plenty of sunflow-

er seeds along the way. As time passes by, they miss their forest friends and must decide to stay or go back to the forest.

For more details about the book, including purchase information, visit https: //rosedogbookstore.com/ adventures-of-chickadee.

After viewing Steven’s artwork, the visitor commissioned a new piece of art directly from Steven. Dorrin, a painter from Mountville, displays off one of his comic book collages. Dorrin has a following among comic book aficionados, one of whom attended the ASPIE gallery opening virtually from his home in Virginia. ASPIE artists Jon (front, center), a painter from Lancaster, and Jesse (back, center), a photographer from Lancaster, were joined by Jon’s mother, Annette (front, far left), and gallery visitors from Acadia Rehabilitation in the Greenfield area. aging a portfolio of relationships and ensuring an exceptional client experience while

difficulties. Participants in the program include those in the Penn Manor, Quarryville and Willow Street communities, but anyone who is interested in participating may register.

This year, GriefShare will be using the fourth edition of the program. The latest edition has been overhauled to include topics that relate to suicide, loneliness, fear, sadness and anxiety, and it will detail methods that can be used to manage such issues. The new version of the program will also cover challenges that have been caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“These topics are important. People have been more isolated over these last few years from the pandemic,” said Trina

Barr, who first introduced the program to Pequea Church in 2003. “Mental health is not often talked about in the same way we talk about other health issues, and there’s a need for it.”

This will be the first time that GriefShare has released a new edition since 2014, and the changes to the program also include switching the length of its informational videos from 45 minutes to 30 minutes. Barr hopes that this change will allow the group to have more time for sharing and discussion during each meeting. The meetings will still be hosted by Dave Perry and Sherry Mull, who have served as group leaders for the program in the past.

Barr was inspired to intro-

duce the program to Pequea Church after she attended a grief support group through Hospice & Community Care.

Barr joined the group following the loss of her younger brother, and she found it to be a helpful resource as she navigated the process of mourning. She desired to share this experience with others and has organized GriefShare programs for nearly 20 years, taking a short break in 2017.

Due to a gift from an anonymous donor, the GriefShare program is free to sign up for. Registration will be accepted at any point during the program. To register, call the church office at 717-8725679 or email Barr at jebarr@frontier.com.

AUCTION BY: Martin & Rutt Auctioneers Ephrata & New Holland, PA AY-2189-L

Each year, the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce (SLCCC) awards business and military scholarships to graduating seniors in the Solanco, Penn Manor and Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) school districts, including students who are homeschooled in those areas.

The recipients of this year’s $500 business scholarships are Ella South, Maggie Swarr and Frances Rain.

Ella, who is homeschooled in Solanco, will take a gap year to compete this summer and pursue a mustang makeover, which is a competition where wranglers have 100 days to train a wild mustang and get them ready for adoption. Next fall, she plans to attend Martin Community College to complete a two-year associate degree in equine training and double major in equine business. She plans to return to the Pennsylvania/Maryland area and start a business, which she will call ES Natural Horsemanship.

Maggie, from L-S, will enroll in Belmont University’s five-year architecture program. She plans to start her own business restoring run-down homes and hopes to provide high school students with the opportunity to learn about the world of construction.

Frances, from Penn Manor, plans to earn her license as an aesthetician and work at a med spa or aesthetician center to gain experience and clientele before beginning her own solo aesthetics practice.

In addition, Griffin Sweigart from Penn Manor was the recipient of the $250 military scholarship. Griffin first enlisted in the Marines’ Poolee Program last October and will enlist in the Marine Corps this September. He will perform maintenance on aerial vehicles.

Applications for the 2024 scholarship will open in early January 2024. The SCCC is looking for more military applicants next year.
