Millersville Sea Lions Make A “Swim For Life” Sarah Repkoe has chaired the Millersville Sea Lions’ Swim For Life fundraising event for the last 10 years. Although swim team participation is down this summer, 20 swimmers raised $4,140, with the top two individuals bringing in $650 each. “This year is our highest total I’ve seen,” Repkoe remarked. The Sea Lions held their Swim For Life event on June 28 at the Millersville Lions Club swimming pool to benefit the American Cancer Society (ACS). Swim For Life is similar to the ACS’ Relay For Life, except participants complete laps in a pool instead of circling a walking track. The Sea Lions have been hosting a Swim For Life for more than 40 years. Nathaniel Frey and Hannah Marks were the top swimmers, each completing a distance of 3 miles. They were also among the top three fundraisers, along with Jack Loreto. Hannah and Jack both raised $650, so they were given the Gayle S. Gardner Memorial Award, which is presented to the top fundraiser each year. The first award was granted in 1978 and was established in honor of a swim team parent who died
from cancer. Repkoe related that swim coach Cece O’Day participated in Swim For Life beginning in 1974 and knew Gardner. The award also has special meaning for Repkoe. “It’s not about me, but it does bring me very much pride and joy to present the Gayle Gardner Award,” Repkoe said. “Meet the first recipient of the award me in 1978.” The Millersville Sea Lions typically have 100 members. The team competes in the Lancaster Summer Swim League, although the competitive season was canceled this year. “Our team was allowed to run ‘swim camp’ and follow social distancing guidelines,” Repkoe said, noting that for safety, the number of swimmers in each group was limited, and they used different entrances and exits to minimize passing each other. (the circumstances) as best as we could.” Scheid credited the death of her father from a fall off his home’s roof on March 13 with changing her perspective. “It’s made me look at funerals completely differently than I did as a professional prior to that,” Scheid said. “It softened me a lot.” Scheid owns three funeral homes in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. In March, all of her staff members took continuing education classes on COVID-19 and embalming. The company’s first client who was positive for the coronavirus arrived during the last full week of March. “It was a completely different feel for me as a funeral director to have my first COVID patient,” Scheid recalled. “The husband was in quarantine, so we waited until he got out so we could have the funeral.” A myth claiming that anyone who See Funeral Director pg 3
