t is common for teenagers to be undecided about a career, but that was not the case for Lititz resident Kayla Landis. At the age of 18, Kayla struggled with her mental health. “I was in the care of a psychiatrist who I felt as though didn’t listen to me, and I didn’t know how to advocate for myself,” explained Kayla. “Because of that, I knew I wanted to be a professional in the psychology field to help someone like me.” Kayla graduated from Warwick High School in 2012 and enrolled in courses at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, in January 2013. In the spring of 2015, Kayla began her studies at Millersville University, where she majored in psychology. By the fall of 2017, she had earned her bachelor’s degree; gotten married to her husband, Brandon; and started a graduate program in clinical counseling at Millersville University. While working toward her master’s degree, Kayla gave birth to two children. Adley was born in June of 2019, and Noah was born in November of 2020. “Being a mom was always number one on my list of things I wanted to be, and school came second to that,” she said. “I didn’t want to wait (to have children) because I was confident that I would be able to do both.” She soon realized sacrifices would have to be made if she wanted to further her education and raise two babies at the same time. “There were days we had frozen meals for dinner; there were days

where the house was an absolute wreck because other things needed to come first,” she recalled. “You can’t do everything, and that’s OK. There’s no way I could have done all of this without the support of Brandon.” Just a month ago, Kayla graduated cum laude with a Master of Science in clinical counseling. During the spring semester of 2021, Kayla interned in the Partial Hospitalization Program at Community Services Group (CSG). She completed 600 hours for her graduate degree and was offered a full-time position at CSG as a group therapist. Kayla noted that what she loves most about being a mother is watching two humans - whom she created and carried - grow, smile, laugh, crawl, walk, and talk. “I love watching them learn, but I also love knowing that they came from me and they’re mine,” she said. Kayla said that one of the best resources that helped her navigate motherhood is social media, specifically Instagram. “My son had lip and tongue ties I never would have known about had it not been for Instagram,” she said. According to Kayla, being a mother has shaped her dreams. She would eventually like to work with postpartum mothers to help them adjust to their new lives and roles. “Postpartum care is lacking and there is not enough attention being brought to it. I would love to try and fill that gap,” she stated. “It seems like this was all supposed to happen. This is what God wants me to do right now, and I’m content with that.”

Manor FFA Members Honored In State Competition Several Manor FFA teams and individuals were named state champions and earned other honors at the recent FFA State Convention and Activities Week. The poultry evaluation team was named the state champion and will compete at the National FFA Convention and Expo in October. Members are Cary Railing, who also placed first individually;
Molly Gehr, who placed second individually; Leah Hess; and Jeanette Kneisley. Other poultry evaluation winners included Elisabeth Strickler, who earned third place individually; Jenna Smith; Olivia Malpica; Kayla Frey; and Katie Moyer. The livestock evaluation team of Emma French, Chloe Perry, Logan Broderick, and Zeke Smith placed second in
the state. The agronomy team of Micah Frey, Ashlyn Rohrer, Berklee Perry, and Morgan Harnish placed second in the state. In addition, Laurel Barley competed as an individual. In the horse evaluation competition, the team of Jackie Nachmias, Caroline Shenk, Bobbie Ditzler, and Julie Shirk placed fourth in the state, and Jackie placed first in the indi-
vidual competition. In addition, two Manor FFA students earned State Proficiency Awards. Morgan Harnish was honored in diversified horticulture, and Sarah Bleacher earned recognition in ag sales placement. The awards focus on students’ learning and growth in their supervised agricultural experiences. They are now eligible for national competition.

John T. Bey has been appointed as the next chief of the Lancaster Police Bureau. After weighing community input, a national search, an extensive interview process, and witnessing his service as interim chief over the past seven months, Bey was appointed to his new role effective immediately. Bey spent 25 years with the Pennsylvania State Police, retiring as captain, director of Training Division. During his career he also served as director of Heritage Affairs and Recruitment and Special Services, and emergency planning liaison officer to the PA Emergency Management Association. Bey has overseen patrol and investigative divisions. Additionally, in November 2020, he retired as first master sergeant, superintendent of financial services for the U.S. Air Force Reserves and PA Air National Guard managing a budget of more than $300 million. The Lancaster City Bureau of Police is the largest police department in Lancaster County, with 139 sworn officers.

The Mount Bethel Cemetery in Columbia is the final resting place of many people who played key roles in Columbia’s history. You can help preserve that history by attending Fête en Noir, a fundraiser organized by the Friends of Mount Bethel Cemetery. The event will be held on Friday, Aug. 13, in the cemetery, located at 700 Locust St. Entrance to the grounds will be available beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by a bring-yourown-picnic from 6 to 9 p.m. The event was inspired by similar local fundraisers, said Kathy Hohenadel, a member of the Friends group. “We saw the Fête en Blanc, which is held in Lancaster, and we thought, ‘What a cool idea,’” she recalled. “Since we’re doing this in a cemetery, we decided to do Fête en Noir and encourage people to wear black.” Looking at the calendar this year, the Friends saw that a Friday the 13th will occur in August, and they thought it made the perfect date for the event. Participants should
the Fête en Noir and should also make reservations as a group, Hohenadel noted, adding, “We’ll reserve tables and seat people by their group, whether it’s a group of four or a group of eight, or whatever size.” Music will be provided by a DJ, and participants will have the opportunity to hit the dance floor or stroll the grounds and take in the cemetery’s beauty. “It will be a wonderful opportunity to have an outside picnic with friends or family in a unique setting,” Hohenadel stated. “It’s starting early enough that there will be enough daylight if you want to walk around through the cemetery and look at the interesting tombstones and statuary and enjoy the history that’s there, or you can just sit and socialize with your friends and enjoy the music.” The event was not held last year due to the pandemic, but it drew about 80 people in 2019, Hohenadel said. She hopes to increase attendance this year, noting that the event helps the Friends group support the cemetery. Along
with the admission charge, there will be other fundraising opportunities happening throughout the event, she stated. Proceeds from the Fête en Noir help maintain the cemetery, which covers a wide area of property. “The major cost we have is the upkeep of the lawn,” Hohenadel explained. “In addition to mowing, there’s a lot of trimming around all of the crypts and tombstones. We spend $14,000 a year on lawn care.” The Fête en Noir is made

Rizzetta’s Tones will perform at the final free concert of the Strasburg Community Park’s “Sounds of Strasburg” concert series on Saturday, Aug. 14, at 6:30 p.m. Rizzetta’s Tones is a Celtic American band consisting of musicians who play “fraternal twin” hammer dulcimers, a silver flute, high and low whistles, alto and bass melodions, and a guitar. The band members often add button accordion, melodica, Greek bouzouki, mandolin, autoharp, and ukulele, as well as bodhran, djembe, and other percussion instruments. All members sing lead and backing vocals on songs. For the fifth year in a row, the Penn Manor girls’ varsity volleyball team earned the United States Marine Corps/American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award. Aden “AJ” Jackson, who once played the role of Donkey in “Shrek the Musical,” will direct a kids’ theater camp.
Aden “AJ” Jackson, a rising senior at Solanco High School, is a man of many talents. He has performed in several shows with Servant Stage Company, including “Don’t Rock the Jukebox,” “Bye, Bye, Birdie Jr.,” “Godspell Jr.,” and “High School Musical Jr.” As a student at Solanco High School, Jackson played the role of Donkey in “Shrek the Musical,” Willard in “Footloose,” and the Pirate King in “The Pirates of Penzance.” Jackson plays violin for
the Solanco High School orchestra and sings in chorus and Solanco’s Chorale, an elite ensemble. He is active in Boy Scout Troop 58 and is currently working on the requirements for the Eagle Scout Award. For his Eagle Scout project, Jackson will host a free “Theatre Rocks!” kids’ camp for children ages 8 to 12. The camp will run from Monday, Aug. 9, to Thursday, Aug. 12, from 9 a.m. to noon at Huffnagle Park, 20 Oak Lane, Quarryville. Jackson suggests that kids bring water and a sheet for their toga costume. Camp will culminate in a performance of Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar” at the park on
Friday, Aug. 13 at 11:30 a.m. The community is invited to attend the free performance. Those who attend should be chairs or a blanket for seating. “Theater is so important because it brings people together,” said Jackson. “It will be a really good time for kids to make friends, and hopefully they will remember this experience for a while.” Jackson noted that he is most looking forward to directing. “If it goes well, I might do this as a yearly thing!” he stated. The Charles F. Snyder Funeral Homes & Crematory will open a new funeral home location with an on-site crematory in Willow Street in 2022. The new location marks the sixth funeral home and third crematory owned by the Snyder family, which will also celebrate the company’s 75th anniversary in 2022. Designed by Cox & Evans Architects, the facilities will be built on nearly three acres of what was previously an office building and farmland. The new 12,500-square-foot building will include 145 parking spaces. Site work design has been done by RGS Associates. Fulton Bank is providing financing for the project, and Benchmark Construction will be the general contractor. Servant Stage Revives Gospel Music Show After an absence of several years, Servant Stage’s “OldTime Gospel Radio Hour” is touring across Lancaster County and beyond in July and August. The show is staged as an old-time radio broadcast, featuring six fictitious musical groups with varying sounds and styles. Groups include the Backwoods Boys, Gospel Jubilee Singers, and Southern Gentlemen Vocal Band. Will operate a palm sander and spray cup gun. Cabinet Makers/Machine Operators – Performs the cutting and machining process of the lumber to make the product. Will also assemble the components, basic filler, end panels and sand the cabinets. Will operate power and hand tools. Inventory/Receiving Coordinator – Responsible for the accuracy and organization of parts inventory and cycle counts by overseeing the movement of items and system transactions. Candidates must have a proven work history, be detail oriented and able to read and interpret measurements and work orders. Previous manufacturing experience or experience working in a wood manufacturing environment, construction, kitchen or bath design products industry or related field is a plus. Will be required to lift up to 50 lbs. The hours of work are Monday through Thursday, 6:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Friday, 6:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m., with overtime required as needed.
