ashington Boro will welcome acclaimed vocal group The Martins to the Central Manor Campmeeting, 798 Central Manor Road, on Saturday, Aug. 13, at 7 p.m. The concert will be held in the main auditorium, located in the center of the campgrounds, and will be free to attend. The auditorium is an open-air pavilion that can accommodate close to 800 attendees; guests are also invited to bring their own chairs and sit around the perimeter. Composed of siblings Judy, Jonathan and Joyce Martin, natives of Hamburg, Ark., The Martins released its debut album, “From Arkansas With Love,” in 1989. National and international recognition swiftly carried the trio to success in the 1990s, with performances at The White House, Carnegie Hall and The Grand Ole Opry and for various nationwide audiences. The Martins has acquired eight Dove Awards from The Gospel Music Association and three Grammy nominations. Following their initial foray into the industry as a group, the members of The Martins disbanded to pursue individual music careers. After almost a decade, the siblings assembled once more to release the single “A New Day,” produced by Jay DeMarcus of country band Rascal Flatts. The return proved to be only the beginning of a new chapter for The Martins; in May 2014, the group recorded and released the album “A Cappella” with arranger Lari Goss, which included collaboration with producers Michael English, David Phelps and Matthew Holt. The release yielded not only a Grammy nomination for Best Roots Gospel Album, but also a Dove Award nomination for Inspirational Album of the Year. Returning to the studio again in 2018, the trio released full-length album “Still

Ambassador dogs represent UDS by visiting sponsors and doing demonstrations, among other jobs. Recently, Quincy posed for promotional photos at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville, to help advertise the annual golf tournament to benefit the program. UDS service dogs are perhaps best known for helping individuals with mobility issues or autism. These dogs train for more than two years before they are partnered with an individual for whom they may open and close doors, retrieve objects, and more. UDS program trainers Janna Barley and Lorrie Snyder work together to match dogs with clients and help the canines learn the specific skills for that role. In addition to full-service dogs, UDS trains companion dogs that work with clients at home. Breece explained that these dogs do not wear a vest or have the same public access rights as service dogs, but they make significant contributions to an individual’s independence. Barley pointed out that Oliver is a service dog that was placed in the home of a woman with mobility issues. “Oliver can open a sliding glass door for her and close it again, and he can fetch anything she has dropped,” she explained. The need for facility dogs has “exploded” since 2016, according to Breece. Secondary trainer Susan Vollmar works with puppy trainer and breeder Kristy Conrad to place facility dogs, mostly in schools. “For our last fiscal year, we added 18 schools to our waiting list,” said Breece. “(Facility dogs) have a lot of the same training (as service dogs),” she said. Vollmar noted that dogs work with handlers from the facility, who receive training at UDS and at the school. She noted that dogs can mediate a student crisis, often helping to de-escalate a student who might otherwise have to be sent home. Facility dogs also serve as nonjudgmental “read” dogs, helping students who struggle with reading to practice and gain confidence. Breece explained that UDS trains Labradors because the
dogs learn quickly and will change allegiance easily. The organization is always seeking funding for the care and training of puppies. “We are bringing in 14 to 18 new puppies each year, and our current waiting list for facility dogs working in Lancaster and York counties has reached 20 as well as our having a healthy waiting list for mobility service dogs,” she explained, noting that puppies may be sponsored by businesses, employees of businesses, churches, or other groups. participant in Extra Life, a Children’s Miracle Network program centered around raising money for children’s hospitals through games. Extra Life raises funds through its network of players and streamers as they stream online and facilitate fundraisers year-round. “A lot of people think the program involves video games only, but it includes any type of game,” said Chobanoff. “Anything from video games to board games to cornhole.” He first discovered the program and became involved with the Children’s Miracle Network when a friend invited him to participate in an event. “I said, ‘Hey, I’m game for that,’ no pun intended,” Chobanoff quipped. “I’ve met quite a few Miracle Children and families and gotten to watch them grow. I was captivated by the program.” Money raised for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals is used in a variety of ways at member facilities; funds are distributed for research, patient services, advancement services, charitable care and hospital equipment. Member hospitals provide over $3 billion in charitable care annually for patients in need. The mini golf event will also be held in association with PlayYellow, another Children’s Miracle Network program. PlayYellow has a similar goal as Extra Life, but it consists of golfers around the country who wish to support the cause. Participants include PGA Tour professionals, amateur golfers, tournaments and golf manufacturers; the only requirement for participation is a desire to contribute to children’s hospitals and treatment nationally. Chobanoff has big plans for next year and hopes to return

Leisure Lanes, 3440 Columbia Ave., Lancaster, will host a mini golf tournament fundraising event Saturday, Aug. 13. The tournament, organized in association with the PlayYellow and Extra Life programs, will raise money to benefit the Penn State Health Children’s Hospital in Hershey as a part of the Children’s Miracle Network. Registration has been scheduled for 9 a.m., followed by a 10 a.m. shotgun start. The tourna-
ment will have a set cost per player and a team maximum of four players, with availability for up to 36 teams total. Leisure Lanes will sell food and beverages at the event, which will be held on both the miniature course and the grass. Children must be age 10 or older to play on the latter. People of all ages and levels of experience are invited to participate, whether they are professional golfers or amateur players. The property is maintained by the Southern Lancaster County Historical Society (SLCHS), located directly across Robert Fulton Highway. “The railroad changed the area forever,” said SLCHS president Stan White. “It allowed merchants and farmers to transport goods and travel to surrounding areas and even Philadelphia.” White, who has been with the organization for 18 years, was initially drawn to Lancaster County by the many railroads and historical sites. Since joining the historical society, he has researched and written several books with SLCHS treasurer Mike Roth and dedicated hours to archiving and researching material historically relevant to the area. “We do a lot of our own research, but a vast amount of information is brought in by local families that have resided here for generations,” White said. “People bring in old photos of what the farms looked like and a lot of family tree information.” Surrounding the birthplace,
the pasture has been maintained by volunteer Carlton Groff for the last three years. Groff, who previously owned an orchard and greenhouse business, oversees the landscape on the property and has fostered lush flora throughout. “We’ve never had anyone like him,” said White. “Robert Fulton’s mother, Mary, was an avid gardener, so his gardens are a nice way to pay homage to her as well.” Groff also maintains the nature trail and added multiple improvements, such as laying gravel and placing drains. On Wednesday mornings, those interested in assisting with cataloging information are invited to come lend a hand. SLCHS is primarily supported by donations and sales of the yearly calendar and handmade Christmas wreaths and decorations, which are sold on one weekend in December. Robert Fulton’s father in 1764; Robert, the future famed inventor and artist, was born upstairs above the tavern in November 1765 and likely resided there until 1770. Although the structure has endured a great deal of restoration over the years, visitors can explore the inside of the building, including a bounty of artifacts, paintings and home furnishings indicative of what life was like during Fulton’s time. Several educational videos on Fulton’s life and accomplishments, as well as the history of the property, are also made available to curious guests. Adjacent to the birthplace is the L, O & S Nature and Rail Trail, a 1.5-mile, looped walking trail that crosses through the surrounding woodland, meadow and wetland habitats. The trail runs along the course of the old Lancaster, Oxford & Southern Railroad, which cut through the property and led to Pilgrim’s Path - named for its role as part of the Underground Railroad.

Lions Will Hold Golf Tournament Having played golf since college, Derek McCarty knows how much fun participating in a golf tournament can be. With that in mind, he organized a tournament through the Lions Club of Mount Joy last year. The second annual tournament will be held on Friday, Sept. 16, at the Highlands of Donegal Golf Club, 650 Pinkerton Road, Mount Joy. The tournament will be held rain or shine, with play beginning by shotgun start at 1 p.m. Golfers should arrive no later than noon to register. The tournament will operate in a scramble format, with teams of four golfers. Singles and doubles will be paired with other golfers, and participation is limited to the first 120 people who register. The cost of the tournament will include green fees, use of a cart, dinner, access to a practice range and prizes. Refreshments will be available in the pavilion and on the golf course during the round, and dinner will be served in the pavilion immediately following the tournament. Prizes, including cash and gift cards to the Highlands of Donegal Golf Club, will be awarded during dinner.
McCarty said the idea for the tournament originated with the Mount Joy Rotary Club, which held the event for many years. “I’m an avid golfer, and I played in their tournament for a number of years,” he recalled. “They eventually stopped doing it because of a lack of volunteers. I knew that the Mount Joy community would come out and support an event like this, so I stepped in to help organize a new tournament.” Last year’s event raised $3,500 and featured participation from 60 golfers. “I’m hoping to get more than 100 golfers this year, and I’m also hoping to increase the number of sponsors,” McCarty said. Proceeds from the tournament will support a variety of community projects, he noted. “Last year, we donated two generators to Kentucky for hurricane relief, and we also support local organizations including the library and REYS.” Other recent beneficiaries of the Lions Club of Mount Joy include Donegal Athletic Club, the Mount Joy Lions Swim Team, Lone Oak AnimalAssisted Therapeutic & Educational Services and the Fire Department Mount Joy. McCarty encourages golfers of any ability to sign up for the tournament, noting that

Only weeks after last summer’s tournament in Landisville, participant Emma Raducanu went on to win the US Open. “The players love it here in Landisville,” Pipkin said. “When the facility in the Bronx was being remodeled, we were asked to host. The players almost didn’t want to go back.” The primary goal of the event is to grow the tennis community and engage those with any experience level or background, from those who have never played before to lifelong tennis enthusiasts. “I love getting to know the players and have become good friends with people from all over,” Pipkin said. “But I soon realized it was about growing tennis. We have clinics for beginners, social events, games, you name it. There is a spot for
everyone to jump in at any level.” Last year, the tournament hosted players from over 20 countries and over 200 volunteers assisted with fundraising and transportation. The rec center will also continue its Serving Up Aces campaign, where the tournament and its sponsors will each donate $1 per ace to an organization. Over $10,000 was raised for the Hempfield Area Food Pantry last year, and this year the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development will be supported. The Buffingtons serve as volunteers, and together they are also a certified foster family. Four of their foster children have been reunited with their biological families. A Golf for a Cure fundraiser will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Registration and giveaway drawing entry will open at 7:30 a.m., and the four-person scramble-style tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. A portion of each entry fee plus net proceeds of the event will benefit the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute. The tournament will have three divisions: women only, men only and mixed teams. The registration fee includes golf, use of a cart, a putting range and lunch, along with games, contests and giveaway drawings. Doubles and triples will be grouped with others to
