would love to see a facility dog in every school. They’re changing the landscape of education and supporting students who have struggled in the past.”
UDS started the tradition of hosting an annual golf outing in 2020 after exploring various options for fundraisers. The organization had hosted a 5K race at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, for a few years and regularly held bingo fundraisers, but it was experiencing challenges with meeting its programs’ financial needs. In 2019, Lori Breece, UDS service dogs manager, suggested hosting a golf outing annually;the event has been supported by the community ever since. “We had great feedback from the first year,” Breece said. “It turned out this is something we could really build and grow on.”
This year, UDS’ goal is to raise $50,000. The proceeds from the golf outing make up the largest portion of the organization’s yearly fundraising efforts, although UDS remains active in the community

Providing a support system for children
BY JEFF FALK
Children experience more healthy and happy development when surrounded by caring family members and positive role models. Ready to help provide children with these supportive people is COBYS Family Services.
Headquartered at 1417 Oregon Road, Leola, COBYS provides a wide variety of support services for children in need in Lancaster County and surrounding counties. But what COBYS is really all about is giving all childeren a chance to

grow into well-adjusted adults.
“We know that those support systems - families, biological or chosen - get you through life,” said Anne Stokes, the director of development and communications for COBYS, “so you can have kids who can relate to others and forge lifelong relationships. It’s the key to a successful way. We don’t want to give up on them. Kids are now coming into care with layers and layers of trauma.”
With three locations in Lancaster and one in Lebanon County, COBYS approaches its mission through See COBYS pg 2

through frequent small-scale events. In recent years, UDS has partnered with local businesses and restaurants to hold events that directly support its programs.

UDS primarily assists those with

mobility issues and disabilities by providing them with a service dog.
UDS raises and trains its service dogs to complete tasks such as opening and closing doors, turning off lights, retrieving medication and
helping someone get dressed in the morning.
Each dog is trained in one of three specialties: facility dogs, service dogs and companion dogs. Facility dogs are prepared for settings such as See UDSdogs pg 4
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDThe Edible Classroom, a nonprofit based in Washington Boro, has been selected as one of United Way’s Level Up and Launch Fellows. Through the annual program, United Way offered a $25,000 grant and has committed further fundraising support to the Edible Classroom, as well as nine other local nonprofits. In addition to the initial grant, United Way will match the funds that the Edible Classroom raises until Friday, Nov. 10. Beth Horst and Grace Julian, co-founders of See The Edible Classroom pg 3

adoption, foster care, counseling and family life education programs. Motivated by faith, COBYS works closely and cooperates with state and local social agencies to provide the best possible outcome for each individual case.

“Any child may end up in foster care; it doesn’t really discriminate,” said Stokes. “They can come from any place. Perhaps their family has been in poverty. Maybe their parents or grandparents have alcohol or other substance abuse issues. Sometimes kids are left to raise themselves. These kids may be in foster care for a few months until their moms and dads can take them back. The goal is to return children to their biological families, if possible.”
According to the 2022 State of Welfare report by the Pennsylvania Partner-

ships for Children, close to 500 children were in foster care in Lancaster County in 2021, and more than 20,000 kids in Pennsylvania received foster care during that same time frame.

“We receive a good portion of our funding from the state and county, but because of the high level of care that we provide, it doesn’t cover all the things we do,” said Stokes. “We empower adults and children to reach their full potential. When they come to us, they’re at a really tough spot in their lives. Our work is to make sure their lives are enriched as much as possible. It’s a challenge that we continue to look to meet.”
COBYS is staffed by over 100 employees, about 10 of whom are
licensed therapists.
“Foster parents are definitely our greatest need right now,” said Stokes. “We need people to say yes to taking an older child into their home. They have to be licensed to be foster parents, and we provide traumafocused training. It’s not an easy thing to do, but it’s the future of a child. It’s a big challenge and a big reward.”
COBYS was founded in 1979 in association with the Atlantic Northeast District

The Edible Classroom

the Edible Classroom, plan to use the increased support to strengthen the organization’s existing programs and to expand its impact in the area.
“As we were considering how to deepen our investment in our school districts, we saw this grant as an opportunity to expand in the community while remaining in the classroom,” Horst said.
With the resources acquired through United Way’s program, the Edible Classroom will focus its attention on two projects: establishing a school-based community garden in the Columbia and Lancaster school districts. One of the goals of creating the gardens is to provide educational opportunities for high school
students in the form of paid internships, where the students will participate in the operation and maintenance of new programs. The gardens will also serve as a platform for many local school districts to offer science classes, gardening courses and career training.
At Hamilton Elementary School in School District of Lancaster, the Edible Classroom will expand the existing garden into an adjacent unused plot. The current garden is already being utilized for summer camps, community gatherings and garden education courses, but the expansion will allow for a larger space for events and easier public access to fresh produce. The Edible Classroom
also plans to hold a series of workshops on site once the project is completed.
As the Edible Classroom progresses its project at Hamilton Elementary School, it is simultaneously working on a similar venture at Columbia High School and Middle School Hill Campus. Although the twin projects share the same goals, the undertaking in Columbia will focus in part on addressing food insecurity in the district.
The food grown in the garden will be distributed to students’ families through a partnership with Columbia Borough.
The Edible Classroom is currently in the early stages of planning the project, and Julian and Horst hope to
Powering Equity grants awarded

The PPL Foundation has completed the first of three planned grant cycles for 2023, awarding $185,000 in grants to 24 nonprofit organizations working to build stronger communities in eastern and central Pennsylvania. In all, the PPL Founda-

tion expects to award nearly $1 million in grants this year to support the Foundation’s focus areas: education; diversity, equity, and inclusion; and sustainable communities.

Funds from the first round of grants - the Powering

Equity grants - will be used to facilitate community conversations on diversity and inclusion, improve equity in access to higher education, and support innovation and entrepreneurship among underrepresented residents in area communities.

Recipients of the Powering Equity grants, ranging from $2,500 to $15,000, included Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region, Harrisburg; Fulton Theatre Company, Lancaster; Lighthouse Rehabilitation Center, New Holland; and United Way of Lancaster County, Lancaster. The nonprofit has also connected with local high schools to enlist the help of volunteer groups and those interested in becoming interns. “Right now, we’re just networking with community members to listen and learn from them,” Horst said. “We’re going to go through one portion at a time as we acquire the funds.” For more information, visit https://theedibleclass room.org.
Presentation to focus on Martic Forge

The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) invites the public to a slideshow on “The Colemans and Martic Forge” when it meets at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12, in Millersville’s Municipal Center, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m.
Jim Polczynski, researcher and author focusing on the Coleman family and its iron dynasty in central Pennsylvania, will be the speaker. He will chronicle the origins

of ironmaking and the ironworks in Lancaster County’s Martic Township, concentrating on the ownership of Martic Forge by three generations of the Coleman family. Robert Coleman - who had vast industrial holdings, including the Cornwall Iron Furnace - gradually acquired complete control of Martic Forge, bringing his nephew, Edward Brien, into partnership. Following Brien’s premature death, Coleman regained complete ownership, and, after his passing in 1825, his sons, and later his grandsons, operated the ironworks until the mid19th century.
The meeting will conclude with a question-and-answer session. Copies of Polczyns-
ki’s books, “Souls of Iron” and “A History of Mystery and Detective Games: 1889 to 1969,” will be available.
A resident of Cornwall, Lebanon County, Polczynski grew up in western Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh. As a boy, he was fascinated by the local steel mills, a curiosity that eventually led him to become a contractor for many well-known steel and aluminum companies. His interest in the history of central Pennsylvania iron ore mining and iron manufacturing developed when he purchased what had at one time been the Cornwall Company Store, located in Cornwall, where he is now a volunteer tour guide for the Cornwall Iron Furnace and
president of the Friends of the Cornwall Iron Furnace. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. For more details, contact Phil Gerber at 717-872-8837 before noon or at pge8507@aol.com.

In recent years, UDS has continued to grow as it has experienced a higher demand for its canine helpers. In 2017,

recipients: East Cocalico Township Police Department, East Lampeter Township Police Department, Lititz Borough Police Department, Lancaster City Bureau of Police, Manor Township Police Department and Northwest Lancaster County Regional Police Department.
UDS encountered a wave of applications from schools across the county seeking facility dogs. “We would love to see a facility dog in every school,” said Breece. “They’re changing the landscape of education and supporting students who have struggled in the past.” For more information, visit https://udservices.org.
