Pequea Township Plans Second National Night Out By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Prior to the planning committee meeting for the second annual National Night Out (NNO) event hosted by Pequea Township Police Department, police chief John Michener reflected on the event’s origin and purpose. “(Pequea) Township resident Dennis Harding pushed for this two years ago,” Michener said. “I think it’s great. Any opportunity we have for positive interaction with the community is a wonderful thing. There are not as many events like this anymore. It’s another chance for people to interact, not only with us, but also with others.” The department’s second annual NNO event will be held
on Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. at West Willow Fire Company, 192 W. Willow Road, Willow Street. Pequea Township police officers and equipment will be on hand. West Willow and New Danville fire companies will have apparatus displayed at the event, and there will be a house replica with simulated fire, which attendees may extinguish with hoses. The fire companies will also host a smoke trailer, which is used to teach fire safety. Lancaster EMS will provide an ambulance, and Conestoga Fire Company will have its water rescue equipment on site. The Lancaster County HAZMAT Team will bring a drone. Nearly two dozen Penn Manor High School students are able to get to summer jobs, run errands, and attend English as a Second Language (ESL) classes thanks to the generosity of community members who donated bicycles to families in need. The effort began when Wendy Letavic, English language development coordinator for the school district, encouraged students to attend a free, two-week ESL program in August. Many of them said they would like to attend but had no way to get there. So Letavic asked them, “If you had a bike, would you ride there, since it’s in Millersville?” When the students said yes, Letavic sent out an email to the high school staff explaining the need and asking for See Bicycle Donations pg 4

The duo of Barley & Steele will open the 2019 Strasburg Bluegrass Festival on Saturday, Aug. 10, at 6:30 p.m. on the campus of First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, 101 S. Decatur St. This team of Kenny Barley and Braden Steele performs a mix of country, bluegrass, gospel, and folk music from the likes of Ricky Skaggs, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Merle Travis, John Denver, and The Animals. “We’ve known each other for a long time. We both attended Pequea Church,” Steele said, explaining the group’s origin. “We actually competed against each other years ago in the Millersville’s Got Talent show. Kenny’s dad suggested we put our talents together, and it wasn’t long after that we formed Barley & Steele.” Aug. 10 will not be the first time the duo has performed at First Presbyterian. “Our first gig was a coffeehouse right there at the

The band is the collective musical vision of Pennsylvania natives Quentin Fisher, Michael Johnson, Shane McGeehan, and Steve Leonard. The band’s passion for playing together comes from a deep love for traditional bluegrass music. The members of Serene Green share a common goal to influence the legacy of bluegrass music with original songwriting and compositions, while honoring the traditions set forth by the pioneers of the genre. Since early 2017, Serene Green has toured in more than 15 states throughout the northeastern, midwestern, and southeastern regions of the United States. Serene Green has collaborated with or opened for nationally touring bands and artists, including The Seldom Scene, David Bromberg, Railroad Earth, Cabinet, Della Mae, Mile Twelve, Fireside Collective, Larry Keel, Jenni Lyn, Jacob Jolliff, Anthony Hannigan, Bill Hearne, and Billy Gilmore. The band released its first alloriginal studio album, “To Whom It Pertains,” in June 2017 and is set to release its second studio album this year. Bicycle Donations from pg 1 bike donations. That email resulted in four bikes, some of them in need of major repairs. That is where one of her students, Josenlly Martinez, stepped in. Before he immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic two years ago, Josenlly used to fix bikes and sell them for extra money to help his family. Josenlly volunteered his skills to make necessary repairs so the bikes are safe and rideable for students. “It is amazing what he can do for these
bikes, making them look almost like new,” Letavic remarked. When demand for the bikes grew, Letavic sent out another email appeal, which a Penn Manor staff member shared with her church. That produced eight more bicycle donations, along with several helmets. A local bike shop also became involved, as did an organization called Santa’s Spokes. In all, more than 20 bikes and several helmets were donated. “The students are so elated to receive a bike because this gives them many more opportunities during the summer to get out of the house, socialize, exercise, or get to a job,” Letavic said. “This has been such a rewarding experience.”

first-person presentation, old college friends James Buchanan “Buck” Henry and Christian Scharff catch up during a holiday at Lake George. Visitors will learn about the tension between Buck and his uncle, President James Buchanan, and how that tension drove him to visit Lake George in the first place. However, in the midst of his respite from the political world, Buck has left his sweetheart, Mary, behind. Visitors will hear the correspondence between Buck and Mary and learn more about their relationship and how letter-writing enabled them to remain close. Summer Story Time at LancasterHistory will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 7, at 11 a.m. A museum educator will read aloud from a book centered on a historical theme and then lead a craft inspired by the theme. The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS), 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will hold its annual Bookworm Frolic. The annual sale of used books will run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14, through Friday, Aug. 16, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17. The sale will feature approximately 40,000 books in 22 categories, including fiction, children’s literature, travel, music, and history. Separate fees have been set for hardback books and for paperback books. Everything will be half-price on Aug. 17. On Aug. 16 and 17, there will be a box deal, with separate fees per box on Friday and on Saturday. The sale will also include records, CDs, and DVDs, which will also be included in the half-price and box deals. The event will be held rain or shine under a tent. A food truck, TJ’s Ice Cream, will offer refreshments on Aug. 14. LMHS’ bookstore will be open as usual, selling new and used books, folk art, music, and family history resources. We had an overwhelming amount of people here,” zoning officer Heidi Martinez said, reflecting on Providence Township’s first National Night Out (NNO) event held in 2018. “Brent (Musser) saved us; he went and got more hot dogs and rolls.” Folks like Musser, who is the alternate for the township’s planning commission, helped to make the 2018 NNO event a success, and still more are poised to assist at this year’s event, which will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the township’s maintenance building, 200 Mount Airy Road, New Providence. An estimated 400 to 500 people attended last year, so the event coordinators are planning for more people. There will be booths from 19 local businesses and organizations more than double from last year. “We had a lot of organizations reach out to us after they saw how well it went last year,” Martinez remarked. She noted that Quarryville Library and CAP Head Start will be among the new participants. The Keystone Wildfire Crew will also participate for the first time, joining representatives of the Quarryville and state police forces, Lancaster County sheriff’s deputies, Lancaster EMS, and the fire companies of Quarryville, Willow Street, Rawlinsville, and Refton. The four fire companies provide coverage for Providence Township, and while they all are set to bring fire engines and rescue vehicles, Rawlinsville also plans to bring a water rescue unit and Willow Street will have a house where visitors can use hoses to extinguish simulated fires. A disc jockey will broadcast music at the event. There will be a bounce house for children, and rides will be offered in Rawlinsville Camp Meeting’s barrel train. The Lancaster Barnstormers mascot, Cylo, will visit, and vouchers to baseball games will be distributed as supplies last. Attendees may register to

Harding noted that this year, in addition to a bounce house for younger children, an obstacle course will be available for older children. Additionally, a dunk tank will be part of the event, and Michener and other special guests will take turns on the hot - er, wet - seat. For a donation, attendees may throw balls at the target. For a fee, folks may enter a drawing for gift cards. Proceeds from the dunk tank and the prize drawing will be used to fund next year’s NNO event. To enhance the festivities, a disc jockey will play music, and hot dogs, chips, and other refreshments will be served free of charge. “Several local businesses have donated money to keep the event free,” Mich-
ener remarked. Last year’s inaugural event drew more than 500 people, and this year, the committee is planning for 800 to 1,000 attendees. “They’ll get to meet (first responders),” Harding said. “They can talk to them without worrying (like it would be) in an emergency. They can see who will be there to help them (in an emergency).” Harding noted that he wants local first responders to know they are a valued part of the community. “(NNO) is kind of a tribute to the police department and first responders,” he said. “It’s thanks for their service. They don’t get enough recognition. They do a thankless job.” The NNO event will be held rain or shine. Make It With Wool Contest Planned Any person who sews, knits, or crochets garments with wool is invited to enter the Pennsylvania Make It With Wool contest. The contest will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the PA Preferred Banquet Hall at the Farm Show Complex, 2300 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg. Entry paperwork is due by Wednesday, Aug. 21. Competition divisions are Pre-Teen, age 12 and under; Junior, ages 13 to 16; Senior, ages 17 to 24; Adult, age 25 and over; and Made for Others, in which the creator and the model will present the ensemble. Ages are as of Jan. 1. Contestants will model the garments. In addition, the garments will be “flatjudged.” All entrants will receive a piece of wool as a prize. Winners in each division will receive additional prizes. The Junior and Senior winners will

He found healing in his artistic expression. His stage backdrops have been enjoyed at concert venues locally as well as across the country.

Shank’s Mare Sets Art & Outdoor Fest The 10th annual Art & Outdoor Fest will be held on Saturday, Aug. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the grounds of Shank’s Mare, 2092 Long Level Road, Wrightsville.
