Loft Community Partnership Needs Public’s Help

To Outfit Its New Kitchen

Loft Community Partnership (LCP) needs your help to acquire everything, including a three-compartment kitchen sink.

LCP is in the early stages of moving from its current home on West Cottage Avenue to new digs at 100 E. Charlotte St. in Millersville, a process it hopes to complete around the beginning of 2026.

The multifaceted nonprofit organization, which serves people in the Penn Manor School District, is already planning kitchen upgrades at the East Charlotte Street building, and a grant has put those plans on the fast track.

LCP recently received a $20,000 grant from the United Way’s Level Up and Launch fund. Development chair Joy Olcott

noted the Millersville-based group has an opportunity to triple that number over the next several months. Olcott explained

that if LCP can raise an additional $20,000 before Friday, Nov. 14, the United Way will match that, which will make it a total of $60,000

On a recent Sunday morning, Ryan Shepard could be found wearing a suit of armor and holding a shield while a child nearby waved a (fake) sword. It might be surprising to discover where he was doing this: in church.

Shepard, a 2024 graduate of Donegal High School who now attends Columbia International University, is one of five summer interns at Community Bible Church in Marietta. He donned the costume as part of a lesson he taught to children attending Sunday school at the church.

“I want to go into ministry and work in a church or work overseas as a missionary in the future, so I wanted to get ministry experience learning how to serve within a church,” he explained. “I also really enjoy working with kids.”

Community Bible Church has held a summer internship program since 2020. It offers an opportunity for college students to get some real-life experience on their resumes and get paid for it.

Millersville Borough’s first National Night Out event last year was a huge success, and the borough is expecting this year’s version to be even bigger and better.

National Night Out will be held Tuesday, Aug. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the large parking lot and grassy area behind Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home on North George Street and the Borough Municipal

Building parking lot, 101 Municipal Drive, Millersville. The rain date is Thursday, Aug. 7. There will be a golf cart to transport people to the event from overflow parking. Melissa Ostrowski, a member of the Millersville Borough Civil Service Commission who is helping to organize the event, said more than 30 local businesses, agencies, and organizations will set up tables with giveaways, games, and activities.

“We really believe in our young people,” said Jim Hottenstein, associate pastor. “We think this is a win-win. It’s a win for the church, because they help out with summer programming, and it’s a win for them, because we get to invest in them for the summer. We made it paid because we wanted to attract college students, and college students need money. We put money in our budget to have a team of interns every summer, and we love it.”

All of the interns this summer are members of the church. They interviewed for the position at

going toward the kitchen renovations.

“Our internal goal is to get the $20,000 by Aug. 8, because they have a match payout at that point, as opposed to having to wait until November,” Olcott said. Go to www.loftcp.org to donate.

Some of the money generated from the matching campaign will be used to purchase equipment such as a stove, a refrigerator, and a three-bowl sink to meet ServSafe specifications.

“(The money) will also allow us to have materials, recipes, and activities for people to take home,” said Olcott. “We’re going to have classes - cooking classes, preservation classes, and nutrition workshops. We work in tandem with the Central PA Food Bank for like nutrition workshops.”

The community kitchen, food pantry, and clothing bank are all under the umbrella of LCP.

Olcott added that LCP will put together food kits so that clients can take bags of groceries and recipes and prepare healthy meals at home.

LCP will also have a greenhouse and community garden on the grounds of the new building as part of the kitchen project. “We can teach people how to grow some food and then take that food and work it in to a healthy diet,” Olcott said. “I think nutrition is a big thing. We’re trying to encourage healthy eating because most people are accustomed to getting the shelf-stable stuff like spaghetti and a jar of sauce. Whereas you can work in some fresh vegetables into that to make it even more healthy and to stretch the meals while still on a budget.”

In addition to the kitchen project, LCP previously established a $2 million Growing Together capital campaign, $800,000 of which is for the new building. Olcott said the United Way grant enabled the

“For many years, it has been that food banks and food pantries exist in basements of churches and give cans out, and nonperishable foods have always been kind of the core of food pantry work,” said LCP executive director Jenna Graeff. “Loft Community Kitchen takes our focus on vegetables or Foods to Encourage (F2E). F2E is a portion of what we do at the Loft with Central PA Food Bank, and it takes those foods to encourage and teaches people how to use them in a healthy way. And even if it replaces a couple of their meals a week or even one or two meals with fresh food, it improves overall health outcomes for folks in poverty, which we know there’s a strong connection between health and poverty and incomes.”

Contributions will allow LCP to continue to positively affect its surrounding areas. “Our impact is really far reaching, even farther than just Penn Manor School District,” Graeff said. “We are influencing other hubs and food pantries to be more connection-oriented like us. We provide dignity to our people by giving them the ability to come in and interact with us and choose their foods. And so that’s where we’re different and unique. So we’re kind of really changing the conversation about food pantry work, and that’s something that not only impacts the Penn Manor very significantly, but we are impacting other organizations in our line of work.”

Tiffany’s Pink Pedal Ride will be held on Saturday, Aug. 9, beginning at the Penn State Health Breast Center in Hershey. The route distance options are 15, 32, or 62 miles. The event was started in 2024 and raises funds to support metastatic breast cancer research. Participants are encouraged to wear pink. For more information, visit https://pinkpedal.org/ about/.

The Covered Bridge Classic will take place on Sunday, Aug. 17. The event will offer routes of 25, 50, 65, or 100 miles that will go through several historic covered bridges in Lancaster County. The ride draws more than 1,000 participants each year, and proceeds will benefit the Lancaster Bicycle Club grant program, which funds covered bridge restoration and bike-related initiatives. More than $590,000 has been raised since 1999. For

The Harrisburg Bicycle Club’s Three Creek Century will take place on Sunday, Sept. 21. The ride will offer low-traffic road route options of 21, 30, 50, 62, 75, and 100 miles, or riders can opt to ride 18 miles on the nearby Cumberland Valley Rail Trail. All routes except the rail trail will circle back to the starting point at the Penn Township Volunteer Fire Company near Newville, offering flexibility on route distances for riders. Proceeds will benefit the Harrisburg Bicycle Club and its grant program, which supports bike-related organizations and projects. For more information, visit www.threecreek century.com.

The

In addition to the auditioned choirs, MCCL offers two non-auditioned programs that foster foundational vocal skills. Prelude Music is for children in kindergarten through first grade, and Choristers is open to grades two through eight. These classes meet Tuesday evenings for eight weeks in the fall and spring.

the beginning of 2025 and lead worship on Sunday mornings for up to 50 children in grades one through five - among other responsibilities - from May through early August.

Joining Shepard as summer interns are Hannah Slobozien, Allison Fry, Lauren Nissley and Ava McAlonis.

“This a church internship. We do more than just work with kids, but it’s mostly kids,” said Slobozien, a 2024 Donegal High School graduate and current Penn State student returning for her second year as an intern. “I love building relationships with the kids, investing in them, becoming someone they can look up to.”

Along with leading the Sunday worship program, the interns help with Backyard Bible Clubs, the church’s program that brings lessons out into the community, as well as Junior Camp, where they spend a week with students in grades three through five. They also visit with senior citizens at the church, help with events such as the church’s Fourth of July celebration and attend staff meetings.

“The first two weeks is orientation, where we go over strength finders, so

they learn their strengths and how to best work with each other,” said Cindy Gardner, director of children’s ministry. “We do a spiritual gifts course, life mapping, team building and getting to know each other. They also read two books and discuss the chapters once a week. One is a ministry book, and the other is for spiritual enrichment.”

For Nissley, a 2024 Penn Manor High School graduate and current student at Liberty University, the internship has provided an opportunity to not only work with children, but also learn something new.

“I’ve been super involved in children’s ministry my whole life,” she said, noting that she started assisting her mother in Sunday school classes as an elementary school student. “I want to be a teacher, so this fit into my desire to teach kids. I have also enjoyed seeing more of the inner workings of the church. I’ve gone here my entire life, but being able to see behind the scenes has been interesting.”

McAlonis just finished a year where she participated in the OneLife Institute in South Carolina,

and she learned about the internship through Slobozien.

“I wanted experience with ministry, and I wanted to get more involved with the community here,” said the 2024 Elizabethtown High School graduate.

Fry, a 2023 graduate of Donegal High School who now attends Cedarville University, said she’s been enjoying working with the children and learning about the inner workings of the church she’s attended for a decade.

“We try to keep everything engaging and relevant for the ages and kids we’re working with,” she said, noting that the interns have a summer

Sunday school curriculum that they use as a basis for their classes. “We want to be sure what we’re teaching really speaks to these kids and what interests them, and we want to play into our own strengths as well.”

Overall, the internship program has given young people a chance to take an active role in ministry while building skills for future success, Gardner said.

“Everybody who puts their faith in Jesus has a spiritual gift to give back to the church,” she remarked, encouraging other churches to consider an internship program. “Even if they can’t do a paid internship, they can encourage young people to use those gifts to serve the Lord.”

Local businesses Sickman’s Mill, BN Excavating, Graze, Crossgates Golf Club, Slaymaker Electric, Nino’s, and Raney Cellars will award door prizes. People must be present to win.

Skully, the Millersville University mascot, and other mascots will be on-site to greet kids.

“The goal of this event is to strengthen community and police relationships and get neighbors out to say hello and enjoy all of the giveaways and resources provided by our participants,” said Ostrowski. “Last year we had over 450 people attend and gave over 250 tours of the police department. We are excited for everyone to stop by and say hello.”

In addition to giving tours and meeting with members of the community, the Millersville Borough Police Department plans to take the opportunity to encourage residents to subscribe to its Crimewatch PA website, https:// lancaster.crimewatchpa .com/millersvillepd.

Chief Jeff Margevich said Crimewatch PA began in

2009 as a printed magazine focusing on crime awareness. “It evolved from this basic printed magazine into an interactive website that they’ve created as a product, and it’s fairly inexpensive for the police departments to purchase,” Margevich said. “They call it a ‘software as service solution,’ so it’s digital engagement for law enforcement, making it easier for departments to share critical public safety information through web portals, social media, and mobile apps. The goal is for police to share the type of information to the public that we deal with. We are making a big push to get people to subscribe.”

The chief noted that as of July 8, just 275 out of the approximately 7,800 borough residents had signed up. “That’s why we want to push this this year to see if we can get those subscriptions up significantly higher,” he said. Police department representatives will hand out window clings and postcards with QR codes. Margevich said the site provides residents with a variety of features. “We use it (for more than posting) about arrests,” he said. “That’s the main thing people have to realize. Maybe they’re not interested in seeing who their police department is arresting. It’s much, much

Presentation on Fossils and Minerals Set

The Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club will present a display and lecture on Sunday, Aug. 3, at 2 p.m. at Blue Rock Heritage Center, 2251 River Road, Washington Boro.

Christopher Haefner, a paleontologist and the founder of the Lancaster

County Fossil and Mineral Club, will give a presentation on fossils in the area, as well as various rocks and minerals.

Attendees may also take a self-guided tour of the various displays and local artifacts.

The event is free and open to the public.

more than that.”

Subscribers can set up notifications and alerts and be informed if there is a street closure or water main break. “We have links to anything that you could need to know,” Margevich said. “It’s all inclusive. If you are interested and want to partner with us to know more about what your police department’s doing in your town and you subscribe, you get email alerts.”

Margevich said he and his officers are looking forward to interacting with residents. “That’s the heart of National Night Out, to create a

nice event for people to have the opportunity to interact with their police department,” he said. “I think it’s very important, because I know everybody’s very busy and their jobs and daily lives. A lot of people may be curious but haven’t had the time to stop by the police station to check it out. It’s a nice opportunity to come see. It’s their local government.”

The officers will also entertain younger visitors. “Kids can go sit in the police cars, and the officers will show them how to work the lights and the sirens, and they will just have a blast,” said Margevich.

The Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club’s upcoming presentation will focus on fossils.

McGough Receives Fulbright Award Church Sets First Friday Organ Concert

Two Dickinson College graduates received 2025 Fulbright awards, continuing the college’s success as a Fulbright Top Producer. This year’s recipients include two graduating seniors who each represent a commitment to global engagement and cross-cultural learning.

Gabriel McGough, a 2021 Penn Manor School District graduate, earned degrees in law and policy and German and will serve as an English teaching assistant in Germany. McGough’s experiences as a paraeducator and his family’s background in education inspired him to pursue the award.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides grants for individually-designed study, research, and teaching projects in more than 140 countries. Dickinson’s Fulbright advising team works closely with students and alumni to develop competitive applications.
