District Support Hub Finds A New Home “The location is the biggest change,” Jennifer Frank said, remarking on the facility move for the food bank and resource center that serves Penn Manor School District. The name has changed somewhat as well. Several community organizations had come together in recent years to form Bridges Community Partnership, with one of the entities being The Loft at Millersville Church. Originally started as a place where district social workers could store supplies for students and their families, The Loft had expanded to serve the entire district. The Loft had joined the partnership, and when the church released ownership of the ministry, the partnership rebranded, becoming Loft Community Partnership. The new Loft Community Partnership found a home in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 222 N. George St., Millersville, and relocated at the beginning of July. “We explored a number of options, including the current location, and ultimately chose to move to St. Paul’s due to the location and cost,” Frank explained. “It is in walking distance of some of the main areas of need as well as public transportation.” Accessibility is important, as the partnership was initially
formed by concerned citizens who realized that district residents may be isolated and lack access to resources like food and clothing banks, public transportation, and employment opportunities. The partnership’s mission is to create a network to connect district residents with the resources they need by building connections among partners, providers, and community members. The board of directors includes school administrators, social workers, church representatives, and more. The partnership board is excited about the possibilities that may be available when it is safe for groups to interact. “(The church) is kind of like a hub,” board member Susan Ellenberg pointed out. “Because of our See Loft Community Partnership pg 3
Loft Community Partnership, represented by event coordinator Jodie Henderson (left) and food coordinator Nancy Kaufhold, has moved its food and clothing pantries to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Millersville. Donations of nonperishable food, toiletries, and diapers may be placed in a collection box at the rear of the church.

With unemployment in the double digits nationally and with limits on how much socialization can be done in person, starting a blog might seem like an ideal solution. Bloggers can earn an income while interacting with people outside their own households from the safety of their homes. However, there is more to becoming a successful blogger than just opening a WordPress account. It is easy to start a blog, but it can be challenging to keep it going. “I stay motivated because I picked a topic that is just our life. It’s something that I’m very interested in,” said Ephrata resident Kathy McClure, who launched the Frugal Lancaster blog in 2010. “Don’t start a blog on something new to you. Choose something that you’re already doing and interested in.” McClure began blogging as a way to share with others how she and her husband saved money while raising children. Initially, the blog focused on how to use coupons effectively. It also featured a part-discount, part-referral deal program, and See Blogging Advice pg 2
Just as local schools have been discussing what academic and extracurricular life will look like in the fall, institutions of higher learning have been making their own preparations. Millersville University (MU) is no exception.
“We want to make sure our campus community is as safe as possible this fall. That’s priority No. 1. Right behind that is to make it as easy as possible (for students) to continue their studies,” said MU director of communications Janet Kacskos. The school year will begin on time on Monday, Aug. 24, and run straight through to Friday, Nov. 20, with no fall break. Classes will also be in session on Labor Day, which will be observed on Monday, Sept. 7. Students will not return to campus following the Thanksgiving recess; instead, they will resume remotely on Monday, Nov. 30. The final two weeks of the semester will be completed online. The second semester will begin on Tuesday, Jan. 19. “The thinking is that keeping students on campus and going straight through will prevent them from spending a lot of time off-campus,” Kacskos explained, adding that the goal is See Millersville University pg 3
Marauder masks are a new fixture to campus tours at Millersville University. Wearing masks in classrooms is just one of the ways student life will be different this fall.
