Bonds across borders

After the end of World War II, much of Europe was reeling from the devastation wrought by the hostilities. Aside from the physical damage done to cities across the continent, there was a rift between different nations around the globe that was in desperate need of repair. The governments of the United States and Germany sought to bridge the gap between their countries’ cultures by creating the German American Partnership Program (GAPP).

GAPP, which was officially founded in 1972, allows opportunities for schools in the United States to partner with schools in Germany. The partnered schools facilitate student exchanges; American students spend a couple weeks staying with their German counterparts, and vice versa. While studying abroad, the students have an opportunity to attend classes at their hosts’ school, take field trips to historically significant sites and embrace a new culture.

reinvents history

There’s ancient history. There’s modern history.

And then there’s living history. At Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, history is alive and thriving.

A Pennsylvania German heritage site situated at 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is an exploratory learning tool and a portal to the locale’s past. Among its highlights are its interactive nature, craft

demonstrations and volunteers dressed in period garb.

“George and Henry Landis envisioned Landis Valley being a Williamsburg in central Pennsylvania,” said Timothy Essig, a museum educator at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum. “They envisioned this living history museum of Pennsylvania Dutch in southcentral Pennsylvania. Living history is a re-enactment of a previous time period. When you come to Landis Valley and you see these different living history

When Kiba Cedeno was born in January 2015, the lives of his family members would never be the same. Kiba was born with a rare genetic connective tissue disorder that causes the loss of the majority of skin and muscle on his legs, as well as other patches on his body. “When he was born, the doctor said, ‘I hope this isn’t what I think it is,’” said Kiba’s grandmother Dana Cedeno. “It was, and it turned our whole world upside down.”

Kiba’s family learned that he was born with epidermolysis

bullosa (EB), a condition they had never heard of before. There is no cure for EB; the primary treatment entails wound care and pain management. As Kiba’s family members worked to manage his condition, they realized that there was very little awareness of EB. Few organizations exist that assist families who are affected by the disease. Kiba’s family decided to create Kisses for EB, a nonprofit organization dedicated to informing the public about EB and supporting families that have children who were born with the disease. The family operates the nonprofit from its See Kisses for EB pg 5

Penn Manor School District applied to become a member of the program in 2005, and it was matched with two German schools: Gymnasium Philippinum in Marburg and Lahntalschule Lahnau, which is located in the nearby town of Lahnau. Penn Manor German teacher Nadine Smith took over the facilitation of the exchanges in 2006, and has coordinated biennial trips ever since.

“Any tourist can go to a country, book a hotel and see the sites,” Smith said. “but my students get off a plane and get to know people they’ve never met. I don’t think you can ever understand another culture until you’ve lived in someone’s home, met grandma and see what kind of toothpaste they use.”

In fall 2022, Penn Manor hosted a group of German exchange students.

Prior to their arrival, Smith and her students fundraised to take their guests on trips to the state Capitol in Harrisburg; Washington, D.C.; Hersheypark; and several local Amish attractions. Smith works closely with her counterpart in Germany, English and Latin teacher Marco Otto.

In June, Smith and her students in the GAPP program visited their German counterparts, whom they had hosted in the fall. The students spent just over two weeks in Germany, and their time was split between their two partner schools and a trip to the Alps, where Smith is from. The group also visited Buchenwald Memorial in Weimar, a

Holocaust memorial located on a site that was liberated by American soldiers in April 1944. “American students learn about the Holocaust in history class, but it becomes real when they step into a site like that,” Smith said. “That’s the whole idea behind the trip. No matter how many books you read, you won’t get that understanding.”

This year, Smith was faced with a few challenges while planning for the trip: The costs of transportation, housing and museum entry fees have recently seen a sharp increase, and Smith became worried that she would need to cancel the exchange. She contacted the Penn Manor Education Foundation, which offered her a small grant to cover the trip’s increased expenses. As a German-born citizen, Smith was able to save on certain costs due to her knowledge of the country and ability to help her group navigate, but she would have been unable to offer the trip without the foundation’s assistance. “These kids start saving for this trip when they’re in eighth grade. I knew I couldn’t cancel it now,” Smith said. “We are so blessed to receive this support for the exchange.”

Landis Valley

demonstrations, you see a living portrait of life from 200 years ago.”

Located in Manheim Township, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum consists of 40 acres of general Pennsylvania Dutch living history surrounded by 60 acres of fields and farmland. Nearly 60 buildings have been erected on the property,

some of which are historically interpreted constructions that provide the village with its 18th- and 19thcentury atmosphere and others of which serve supportive purposes.

Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is a state-operated facility that is also supported by the Landis Valley Associates.

“Our goal continues to be to share the story of this unique culture in American history,” said Essig. “When you come to Landis Valley, you’re going to learn about agriculture, different trades and the architecture of the overall German contribution to the American culture. We do tell a big story.”

The peoples who would later come to be known as Pennsylvania Dutch immigrated to the United States and the area in three distinct waves, from the 1680s to the 1840s. Brothers and Landis Valley founders

Henry and George Landis collected more than 200,000 objects related to these immingrants’ culture and stored them in buildings that, in 1925, became the foundation upon which Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum was built.

When the state became involved with its operation in the mid-1950s, Landis Valley was transformed into the living history village it is today.

“Henry and George Landis were two men focused on their culture,” said Essig. “They weren’t millionaires, but they spent their entire lives collecting artifacts of that culture.”

Today, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum hosts nearly 70,000 visitors each year for school field trips, family vacation visits, bus trips from destinations mainly east of the Mississippi River, special events and facility rentals. The visitors come mostly from southeast and southcentral Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey

and from as far away as the rest of the 50 states and even other countries.

The mission of Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is supported by hundreds of volunteers.

“History is not ‘was’; history ‘is,’” said Essig. “You experience history when you visit Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum. History comes to life.”

There are multiple variations of EB, but they all share many of the primary symptoms. In the United States, over 200 children are born with the condition every year. It is estimated that 25,000 people in the U.S. currently live with EB. Children with EB are often referred to as “butterfly children,” due to their skin being as fragile as a butterfly’s wings.

Kisses for EB regularly hosts fundraisers throughout Lancaster County, which it uses to help families across the country in a variety of ways. The nonprofit’s efforts have included covering travel costs for trips to the hospital and mailing gift cards to families that have lost a loved one to EB. Kisses for EB

frompg 5

was admitted to the hospital over the holiday.

One of Kisses for EB’s primary goals when fundraising is to grant families an opportunity to attend a biennial conference hosted by debra, an international charity dedicated to researching a cure for EB. In 2022, Kisses for EB raised enough money to send 10 families to the conference in Denver, Colo. During the conference, families attend a variety of breakout sessions that discuss topics such as new drug trials for EB treatment, methods of managing the condition and gadgets that can improve patients’ quality of life. At the 2022 conference, Kisses for EB gave out gift cards to families in attendance.

Kisses for EB is currently fundraising with the goal of sending 20 families to the next debra conference, which will be held in July 2024 in Georgia. Since the organization is not large enough to qualify for the yearly ExtraGive event in Lancaster, it coordinates several smaller fundraisers such as a 5K race in the spring and a giveaway drawing in the fall.

On Saturday, Sept. 9, Kisses for EB will host a benefit motorcycle and car ride through the Southern End. The ride will begin at Refton Fire Company, 99 Church St., Refton. Registration will start at 8 a.m., followed by the ride at 10 a.m. Riders will return to the fire hall by 12:30 p.m. for food and prize drawings, and those who do not wish to participate in the ride itself are still invited to attend.
