“When I commit to a goal, I want to see it through to the end,” said Sally Winchell, who was crowned Ms. Pennsylvania Senior America 2023 in Harrisburg on June 4. “With this pageant, I was all in.”
Sally first heard of the pageant last February when a friend, who served as Ms. Pennsylvania Senior America in 2021, invited her to a meet-and-greet. Sally met the current and past Pennsylvania queens, along with one who was a national winner. “It was fact-finding,” reported Sally, who noted any lady who has reached the age of elegance - age 60 and up - is eligible to take part.
An application, including biographical information, was necessary to compete. Sally explained that the purpose is to give older women a “chance to display their inner beauty, talent, and elegance.” She added that the pageant honors the achievements of senior women and motivates and
encourages them to utilize their full potential and share their positive outlook on life with others. “It’s not just a beauty pageant,” she pointed out.
“It’s more about your achievements, goals, and what you stand for. It gave me an opportunity to reflect.”
Looking back, Sally noted that many of her achievements helped her build toward taking part in the pageant. Raised in Bowmansville, she moved to Terre Hill as an adult and was active in New Holland, teaching at a local dance studio and later owning Class Act Dance Studio. She became a personal trainer and started her own nutrition counseling business, and she competed as a female body builder. In 2012, Sally moved to the Millersville area with her husband, George, and she is employed at Bright Side Opportunities Center specializing in senior health and fitness.
Sally said that the pageant included a brief interview with the judges; a talent competition, for which she performed a professionally choreographed jazz dance; and an evening gown competition, during
Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will offer a workshop on Friday, July 28, from 1 to 4 p.m. The class will be hosted by Emily Smucker-Beidler, a resident of Centerville and an art teacher at Landisville Primary Center. SmuckerBeidler will explain how to create art pieces in the early American fraktur style, as well as delve into the history of the art form. Preregistration for the workshop is required and must be completed by Tuesday, July 25, at https://mennonitelife.org/events.
When Swiss-German immigrants first came to Pennsylvania, they didn’t bring much; often the settlers only had a few items, such as birth certificates and family Bibles. Although they didn’t have any physical mementos from their homeland, they remembered it fondly and regularly created what became known as fraktur art pieces.
The word fraktur means fractured writing, and it referred to a specific type of embellished font. The term now refers to the specific style of art created by Pennsylvania settlers between 1740 and 1840. It is one of
which each contestant presented her philosophy of life. Writing her philosophy intrigued Sally. “When I was preparing I spent a lot of time thinking about why I was put on this Earth. What do I do? What do I represent?” she said. In the allotted 35 seconds, Sally discussed her daily chances to motivate and inspire others through strength training and healthy eating. “(Those are) the keystone to healthy senior years,” she said. “We need not accept what we think old age should look and feel like. We need to be strong, energetic, and engaged in life.” Sally noted she is proud of what she wrote. “It’s what I live,” she said. “I live to bring a better life to others.”
When Sally was named Ms. Pennsylvania Senior America 2023, she received a crown and a sash to wear during public appearances. She will represent the state in the national competition in Atlantic City, N.J., from Sunday, Oct. 15, through Thursday, Oct. 19. Sally is available to speak to women’s groups or to help with events. She can be reached at sallyawinchell@gmail.com.
Blue Rock Heritage Center, 2251 River Road, Washington Boro, was founded in 2001 to offer visitors a view into the rich history of the area, as well as to provide easy access to the Susquehanna River. The organization houses a multitude of artifacts that have been found locally; some are as ancient as 12,000 years old.
The center was founded by a group of local residents who recognized the amount of history contained within Washington Boro and wanted to share it with others. The founding members renovated an old mill to See Blue Rock pg 3
The first Community Action Partnership (CAP) of Lancaster’s first Thrive to Five Home Visiting Park Play Date began at 9 a.m. on June 30 in the Reamstown Memorial Park, and by 9:10 a.m., bubbles filled the air as nearly 10 children and their caregivers were engaged in educational play. “It’s for the whole family,” said Ocean Smith, family engagement specialist with CAP and CrossNet Ministries in New Holland. “The little and the big (children) are learning, and the adults are too.” In addition to the Reamstown session, a playdate was held at Long’s Park Kids Place on July 7, and two upcoming dates are scheduled for Friday, July 28, and Friday, Aug. 18, at Daniel’s Den Playground, 530 Central Manor Road, Lancaster. Registration to attend a Park Play Date is encouraged. Parents may register at https://bit.ly/TTFHVPPlaydates23.
“The Park Play series is a continued
learning connection for the families over the summer,” said Smith, who noted that one important benefit of the program is giving children and parents a chance to connect and socialize. “The biggest thing is building a resource group with informal connections and play,” she said.
“So much learning is done through play,” Smith pointed out, noting that the games she brings to the park are designed to keep children engaged. “There are so many simple things you can do and ways to interact that encourage learning,” she noted, adding that the playground itself offers gross motor practice. “We have some books we hope to do a story time, (followed by) a couple of songs,” she said. Open-ended games incorporate sensory objects and include handeye coordination activities, such as a fishing game. “We have (games to encourage learning) colors, numbers, math, and fine motor skills,” she said,
We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

frompg 1 pointing out a tic-tac-toe game, sidewalk chalk, and a bean bag toss. “These help to work skills over the summer,” she said.
About five team members aided Smith in the park and one of those was Jessica Zook, youth services coordinator with the Adamstown Area Library. “The libraries ... are a continued connection through the collaboration of the First 10 Partnership,” explained Smith. “We often collaborate for play and learns and sometimes in these smaller learning
and connection opportunities like the playdates.” Zook was at the Reamstown Park to read a book to the children and help involve families in the summer reading program. During the session, Zook also interacted with the children by helping them hunt for plastic waffles and fish, among other activities. “There’s a fish escaping,” she pointed out to a child.
Last year, Smith only served ELANCO School District as part of the Parents as Teachers program, but that changed for 2023 when the
house the Heritage Center. The mill contains a variety of displays, including rock carvings, items traded among Native tribes, stone tools and two petroglyphs, which were excavated from the river when Safe Harbor Dam was built. All of the artifacts on display date back to some of the earliest Native American communities up until the contact period, when Europeans first traveled to America.
“It’s important to look at all of the pieces. They tell the story of the Native Americans and how they lived,” said Charlie Douts, president and charter member of Blue Rock Heritage Center. Located on the property is a three sisters garden, which was commonly used by Native Americans. This type of garden contains maize, beans and squash planted together. Native communities also heavily relied on the Susquehanna River and its adjacent resources, such as migratory birds and fish.
“(Washington Boro) is a unique place; one of the largest concentrations of Native Americans in Pennsylvania was right here,” Douts said. “It’s quite common for people to find artifacts in fields and gardens due to how
prevalent the communities were.”
In 2018, Blue Rock Heritage Center began renovating the Witmer Barn. The barn, which was constructed in 1856, is located near the mill where the center currently stores its displays and hosts events. The end goal of the renovation is for the center to move its collection and hold meetings in the Witmer Barn.
Blue Rock Heritage Center is entirely operated by volunteers, and it is open to the public on one Sunday every month. The center also regularly organizes special events, such as an annual open house and Heritage Day at Washington Boro Park in October. Each event features demonstrations and guest speakers who provide information on Native American culture. Blue Rock also accepts appointments for group tours.

the oldest forms of American folk art, it draws inspiration from illustrated manuscripts in medieval Europe. Fraktur art often depicts three core symbols from Europe: birds, hearts and tulips. However, the settlers began to incorporate aspects of their new lives in America into the art.
During the workshop, SmuckerBeidler will offer a presentation on birds that were depicted through fraktur art, many of which were native to Pennsylvania and are now extinct. Participants will compare old art pieces and analyze which parts of the environment the settlers were integrating through the images. Participants will then be able to choose from three templates of fraktur drawings, which they will trace onto Bristol board and redefine with ink pens. After the template has been traced, participants will complete the piece with their materials of choice. Workshop attendees are invited to bring their own paints or colored pencils, but materials will also be
available to purchase during the class. At the end of the workshop, each artist will be able to take home his or her finished fraktur art piece.
“Fraktur art is a great portal to understanding so many things,” Smucker-Beidler said. “These were normal, everyday people that at the end of the day just wanted to make something beautiful.” Often, fraktur artists would not even sign their names on the finished piece. Many fraktur artists were schoolteachers who gave out the artwork as a reward to students.
Smucker-Beidler first learned about fraktur art in Montgomery County, where she was raised. In eighth grade, she was mentored by Roma Ruth, a prolific fraktur artist. Smucker-Beidler also learned from her neighbor Mary Jane Hershey, a fraktur art collector and researcher.
After attending college to study fine art, Smucker-Beidler was sought out by people requesting fraktur art pieces, due to the fact that few artists still create it. “I’ve fallen in love with the history of it,” Smucker-Beidler said. “It speaks to people’s basic need to make something beautiful.”
