Taking A Swing At A New Fundraiser By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Bucking the trend of upscale galas requiring dancing shoes, the latest fundraiser for the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County will swing the opposite direction. The event on Sunday, July 21, will require closed-toe shoes and will be held at Stumpy’s Hatchet House, 405 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, from 7 to 10 p.m. Pet Pantry medical director Bryan Langlois explained that he has done some unique fundraisers as an individual - such as spend a weekend locked inside a dog cage - but he wanted to extend his efforts to include more people, and he wanted something new and different. Enter Chance’s Chucking for the Animals, an event organized around throwing hatchets. Langlois has set two ticket tiers. The basic tier will admit folks to the event
and give them access to light barbecue fare and one serving of beer or wine each, as well as giant Jenga and Connect Four games. The top tier will include the same benefits of the basic tier, with the addition of two hours of throwing time. Stumpy’s will provide training to everyone who will be throwing. Having the build of a lumberjack is not a requirement to throw a hatchet successfully. “It’s not a strength thing,” Langlois said. “It’s just finesse.” However, attendees are encouraged to don their best lumberjack attire, as a costume contest will be held during the event. Folks may throw as individuals, but a Golden Hatchet trophy will be awarded to the team of four that has the best score. Langlois said he hopes to make this an annual event and offer a trophy each year. All attendees will have opportunities to enter drawings for prize baskets. See Pet Pantry Fundraiser pg 6

“We’re celebrating 10 years of awesomeness,” said Lynda Charles, president and founder of Help the Fight, which aids in meeting breast cancer patients’ financial needs. “We didn’t start out as a nonprofit; it snowballed.” In August 2009, Charles held a bake sale to benefit a family member and a coworker who had breast cancer. Several more fundraisers and contributions to a local cancer medical center filled the following years. In 2012, Help the Fight received its official nonprofit status, and the organization’s focus turned to helping individuals. In the past decade, Help the Fight has supported more than 700 people, with close to 200 people receiving See Help The Fight pg 5

For the past seven years, the residents of Woodcrest Villa, 2001 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, have hosted a Christmas in July event to collect school supplies for students in need in Lancaster County. While the collection
drive usually ran for several weeks and culminated in one special event, this year’s Christmas in July will be held on one day only. “We wanted to try something new,” explained event chair Stephanie Kaufhold. She is supported in planning the event by six committees that each See Christmas In July pg 7
