Nonprofit organization offers free therapy to veterans

Deep in the woods in Conestoga lies a 21-acre property populated by lush flora and thoroughbred horses. The Building Bridges Foundation at Anderson Farm, located on Indian Hill Road, was created by Dave Anderson in 2015 for one purpose: to offer veterans a place of peace, recovery and comradery.

Building Bridges began by offering free equine therapy to veterans, using six thoroughbred horses. The number of veterans participating in the program has continued to grow each year, with the foundation now serving twice as many people as it did in 2015.

Building Bridges employs two equine therapists, one of whom is a veteran himself. Equine therapy is used to help veterans experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder

(PTSD) and other conditions from their time in the military. All of the foundation’s services remain free due to community fundraising and sponsors.

In 2018, Building Bridges created the Vet’s Café. Every Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon, veterans are invited to gather at the café, which is stationed atop a scenic hill on the property. The private atmosphere, free from the sounds of traffic or commotion, offers veterans an opportunity to connect with those who have had similar experiences. Local grocery stores provide pastries, cookies and coffee for the café. “The biggest thing that happens there is the conversation,” said Joe Campbell, chief operating officer of Building Bridges. “Sometimes it’s riotous laughter; sometimes it’s a sedated discussion about things that are near and dear to them.”

A piece of history restored

In the fall of 2022, LancasterHistory staff member Randy Harris noticed that multiple gravestones at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Lancaster were in need of attention. The three gravestones were leaning heavily and were at risk of falling over completely without the proper attention. Although the historic cemetery is home to many graves, these particular gravestones preserve an important piece of Lancaster’s history, as they belong to Lydia Hamilton Smith and her two sons, William and Isaac.

Harris contacted the African

American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania and Charles F. Snyder Funeral Homes to share his concerns about the gravesites. The organizations partnered with LancasterHistory to devise a plan to restore the burial site. Andre Dominguez, a LancasterHistory volunteer and local historian, created a conservation report for the site and worked with Mosko Cemetery Monument Services to start the process of resetting and stabilizing the gravestones.

Dominguez and Mosko used two 12-foot-tall cranes to lift the headstones, each of which weighed over 800 pounds. After the stones were

PMEF wraps up another successful golf scramble

The Penn Manor Education Foundation (PMEF) held its 17th annual golf scramble on June 13 at Meadia Heights Country Club, 402 Golf Road, Lancaster. The event serves as one of the organization’s largest yearly fundraisers and allows it to provide grants and scholarships to students in the community.

Over 130 golfers participated in teams of four, competing in various

challenges to earn prizes. A gift certificate was given to the team with the “Meadian” score, and golfers attempted to putt a hole-in-one to win a new car. First place was acquired by a team comprising Phil Gale, Larry Bellew, Grant Gale and Jason Hottenstein.

The golf scramble is a tradition that was started by PMEF board member Pat Kline 17 years ago. PMEF had already begun hosting an annual fundraising dinner in the fall, and Kline suggested the golf

moved aside, the cranes were used to pick up the bases, allowing the Dominguez and Mosko to dig down and level the ground with stone and marble chips. The base and headstones were then moved back to their proper place and sealed to prevent water from causing any further destabilization. Dominguez then cleaned all three of the grave markers.

Harris and Dominguez installed a commemorative marker at the gravesite following the restoration. The marker offers information on the Smith family and the significance of its role in history. Smith was a close friend of Thaddeus Stevens, and she worked as his housekeeper. The two were heavily involved in the Underground Railroad and actively worked for the liberation of slaves during the 19th century. “There have been questions about their relationship and lots of misinformation throughout the years, including varied accounts of where (Smith) is buried,” Harris said. “This is

another phase of continuing to find accurate information on two pivotal members of American history.” A dedication ceremony for the new historical marker was held on June 28.

LancasterHistory is currently in the design phase for a large project to create the Thaddeus Stevens and Lydia Smith Center for History and Democracy in downtown Lancaster. The building will

be located on the corner of South Queen Street and Vine Street, and it will be part of the Lancaster County Convention Center. In the new installation, visitors will have a chance to learn about Lancaster’s role in the Civil War and the lives of Stevens and Smith, as well as others who were involved with abolitionist efforts. “These people were considered fringe characters with no grounding in

reality. They pushed the envelope until they brought more people to their side,” Harris said. “We want to convey the importance of these people’s lives and what it really meant to be an abolitionist and combat the horrors of slavery.”

LancasterHistory hopes to begin construction on the project by the spring of 2025. For more information, visit www.lancasterhistory.org.

Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum will host a new, hands-on class titled Flax 101 on Saturday, July 22, from 9 a.m. to noon. Landis Valley Museum has grown and processed flax for many years, as flax fiber was used to create linen, an important textile to Pennsylvania Germans.

With guidance from Landis Valley historic farming expert Joe Schott, attendees will “pull,” or harvest, flax in the field; learn about the retting process; and then process retted flax to fiber. Attendees should dress to

be outside, wear comfortable shoes and bring water. This workshop requires some physical exertion. Participants should meet at the Visitor’s Center.

The event will be held if there is light rain, but it will be rescheduled for Saturday, July 29, if thunderstorms or heavy rain is predicted. Space is limited, and all sales are final. There is a fee, with a discount for Landis Valley Associates members. Proceeds will benefit the museum.

To register, visit https://tinyurl.com/flax101.

scramble as a way to generate funds for the foundation in the summer. “We’ve been blessed with great participants,” Kline said. “We fill the field every year, and 85 to 90% of players return the following year.”

The funds raised from the golf scramble are applied through PMEF’s three main community endeavors: Venture Grants, senior scholarships and Strong and Healthy Family Grants. Venture Grants are given to teachers to create enrichment opportunities for students that

would otherwise not be covered in the school’s budget. In the past, Venture Grants have allowed students to study abroad in Germany and given schools the resources to acquire service dogs.

Strong and Healthy Families Grants are given to families in the Penn Manor School District who are in need. These grants assist families with paying rent and utility bills, purchasing uniforms for the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center or covering the entry fee of an Advanced Placement course.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Strong and Healthy Families Grants were used to purchase hundreds of internet hot spots for students so they could access virtual learning despite school closures.

Throughout the district, hundreds of teachers participate in a payroll deduction program to donate part of their salary to PMEF. The payroll donations total over $20,000 annually, and PMEF gives out over $250,000 in grants and scholarships. “Our success comes from the participation of everyone involved,

Artists sought to create mosaic

The City of Lancaster is seeking a qualified artist or artist team for the commission of a sidewalk mosaic in a hardscaped courtyard to be located on the southeast side of the Plum Street roundabout.

The City of Lancaster Department of Public Works plans to install a permanent roundabout at the intersection of North Plum and East New streets and Park Avenue. A temporary roundabout is currently installed in its place. Construction will begin Wednesday, Aug. 30, and will be completed by June 2024. The roundabout will be accompanied by a variety of amenities, including vegetated curbing, street trees and other foliage, a hardscaped courtyard, street furniture, and public art in the form of a sidewalk mosaic. The city is seeking an artist to complete the 40-square-foot mosaic to be installed in the concrete of the courtyard.

Takeout community meal set

Joseph’s Table at Ascension Lutheran Church, 600 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street, will offer a takeout meal to members of the community on Thursday, July 20.

Meals may be picked up from 5:30 to 6 p.m.

The city is committed to creating opportunities for local artists, be it through commissioned works or by facilitating learning opportunities for skill development. Artists are preferred to reside in or near Lancaster city, although non-local artists are also welcome to apply, particularly those who have experience working with emerging artists. Non-local artists will be asked to provide hands-on experience to one local artist throughout the artistic process.

Selection will take place

using a two-phase process. A selection committee will first review applications submitted through the request for qualification. Up to three finalists will be selected by the committee. Finalists will then be invited to complete phase two of the selection process, which will include the final design proposal. Final design proposals will be reviewed by the Public Art Advisory Board.

The deadline to submit proposals is Monday, July 17. For more details, go to www.cityoflancasterpa.gov.

The Lancaster County Planning Commission (LCPC) held its third annual Leadership Awards Celebration on May 9. Individuals and projects from around Lancaster County were awarded for their understanding and support for good planning, the planning process and places2040, the Lancaster County Comprehensive Plan.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Mary Wickenheiser from Columbia Borough. Wickenheiser has provided Columbia Borough with distinguished and committed service for 23 years. She has served on borough council, the planning commission, Columbia River Park Committee, Lancaster County Solid Waste Authority Citizens Advisory Committee, the Safe Harbor Citizens Advisory Committee and the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail Committee.

The Distinguished Service

Award was presented to Ray Marvin of Bart Township. Marvin has demonstrated effective leadership and a commitment to consensus building during the creation and adoption of the Southern Lancaster County Comprehensive Plan, which was adopted by nine of the 12 municipalities in the Southern End. Marvin has served as a supervisor for more than 15 years and has held the role of chairman. He became the Bart Township representative on the Southern Lancaster County Inter-Municipal Council and is the vice chairman. Martin also represents the Southern Region on the LCPC.

The LCPC partnered with the Lancaster County Coalition for Smart Growth to present student project awards. The coalition put up the prize money for the awards.

A Leadership Award was presented to fifth-graders at Ephrata Intermediate School for their program Ephrata Eats. Students conducted a survey to identify preferences for a coffee, tea, smoothie or cupcake. Students developed their menu item and created a commercial pitch and

video for the new menu item. Selected entries were featured on local restaurants’ menus for a set amount of time.

A Leadership Award was presented for the project “A Long Walk to Water,” created by 92 third-graders at Clay Elementary School. Students at the school engaged in a unit on the importance of water and the global water crisis. Students developed a simulation of the effort and challenges of those needing water across the globe. A collection of $1,300 was donated to Water for South Sudan, and 72 gallons of water were donated to Ephrata Area Social Services.

A Leadership Award was presented to Lancaster Clean Water Partners for its Clean Water Projects in Pequea Creek Watershed. As part of the projects, four Plain Sect farmers and partners from public, private and nonprofit sectors are collaborating to implement practices that improve the health of both their operation and water quality in a small tributary of Pequea Creek in Paradise Township.

An Achievement Award was

presented for the Safe Harbor Bridge Rehabilitation project in Manor Township. Restoration of the 125-foot-high trestle bridge began in 2015 and was finally completed and opened in June 2022. The entire 0.3-mile deck was replaced with 2,170 tons of concrete and wooden side rails at a cost of $9 million. The project was designed to be a showcase bridge with glass deck windows, bird viewing binoculars, an elevated viewing area and a pavilion. The bridge connects the 23-mile Enola Low Grade Rail Trail.

The Quarryville Active Transportation Plan in Quarryville Borough received an Achievement Award. Implementation of the transportation plan will assist the borough in improving its nonmotorized transportation network by developing a system of nonmotorized transportation connections and contributing to a more equitable transportation network for people of all income levels, ages and abilities.

The Lancaster2040 Summit presented by the Lancaster County Coalition for Smart Growth and Tenfold was recognize with an Achievement Award. On March 31, 2022, the summit brought together the business, nonprofit, government and education sectors at Millersville University’s Ware Center to discuss Lancaster County’s challenges and opportunities. The Lancaster2040: Thinking Beyond Boundaries Summit focused on problem solving while working together to achieve the best for Lancaster.

A Merit Award was presented to the City of Lancaster for its Vision Zero Action Plan. The plan sets goals and defines actions to move Lancaster toward eliminating traffic-related deaths and serious injuries by 2030.

Landis Communities was presented a Merit Award for its Landis Place on King, an innovative project in the heart of Lancaster city. It is a mixed-use building with 79 apartments, 41 interior parking spaces, a restaurant and United Way offices. Located at 239 W. King St., it will provide middle market and affordable housing with services for those age 55 and over. This project will be a nearly $28 million investment in the neighborhood. Landis Communities is also raising money to subsidize 10% of the apartments for long-term affordable housing rents.
