Tons of tomatoes
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDOn the second and third Saturdays of July, Washington
Boro will continue its tradition of hosting the annual Tomato Festival at Washington Boro Park, 2010 River Road. The event celebrates the area’s history of growing tomatoes and benefits the Blue Rock Fire Rescue.

This year, the festival will be held on July 8 and 15, and it will begin at 3 p.m. A variety of food will be available to purchase, including hamburgers, hot dogs, sausage sandwiches, barbecue sandwiches, french fries, funnel cakes, cotton candy and ice cream. Several items that feature locally grown tomatoes will also be available to purchase, including the community favorite tomato sandwich. Built around thick slices of Lancaster-grown tomatoes, the sandwiches are enjoyed by the festival’s attendees each year in a variety of ways; many enjoy them with bacon, lettuce, onion and mayonnaise.

Live music will be provided from 5 to 9 p.m. on both days of the festival. Participants will also have an opportunity to play games to win prizes, among other festive activities. “Some people come for the food, some people come for the games and some people just come to enjoy the music,” said Richard Schock, who is on the planning committee for the festival. “We’re only a couple hundred feet from the river, so we always have a nice view, too.”
The Tomato Festival was first organized by the Lions Club in 1958 as a way to celebrate Washington Boro’s unique relationship with the vegetable. Due to its proximity to the Susquehanna River, the soil in the area is often mixed with sand, making it optimal for yielding a high number of
A banquet to battle breast cancer
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDHelp the Fight will host its 14th annual fundraising banquet on Saturday, Oct. 7, at Spooky Nook Sports, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m., and the event will conclude at 9:30 p.m.

Only 500 tickets will be sold for the banquet, and the deadline for registration is Saturday, Sept. 9. Registration forms may be acquired at www.helpthefight.org or by emailing helpthefightnow @gmail.com. An early bird special will be offered to those who register by Thursday, Aug. 31.
The banquet will include a buffet dinner at 6:30 p.m., as well as a benefit auction throughout the evening. Items available to bid on will include artwork, jewelry, gift baskets, furniture, children’s toys, clothes, designer handbags and weekend getaways. Prize drawings will also be held during the event; tickets for the drawings will only be available to purchase with cash.
tomatoes. In the festival’s first year, the local growers’ association sent its farmers to the event to vend their produce.
Although the festival has continued to be held annually for over 50 years, it has grown into more than just a place to buy tomatoes. In 1992, the Washington Boro Fire Company took over the organization of the event. The festival is now run by Blue Rock Fire
Rescue, which was created by merging the fire companies from Washington Boro, Millersville and West Lancaster.
Blue Rock Fire Rescue now uses the Tomato Festival as a way to assist with recruitment and retention within the volunteer fire company. General expenses such as equipment costs are covered by the township, but the funds raised from the festival are used

to hold banquets for Blue Rock’s members and to purchase uniforms and anything else the firefighters may need.

Schock organizes the Tomato Festival with fellow planning committee co-chairs Bob Howell and Carl Miller. The committee is always looking for volunteers to assist in the kitchen or operate a stand at the festival. “People can volunteer to help in the kitchen, run a stand or help set up,” he said. “Whatever someone wants to do, it would help us out.”
For more information, contact Schock at 717-951-6411.
The items in the auction are donated by various businesses and individuals in the community leading up to the banquet. Help the Fight invites anyone who wishes to make a donation to contact its office via email or by calling 717-455-7095. The deadline to make a donation is Friday, Sept. 15. “We need the community’s support through donations,” said Susie Dailey, patient coordinator for Help the Fight. “Anyone who does artwork, makes jewelry or wants to put together a gift basket can donate.”
Help the Fight, a nonprofit organization based in Mountville, uses the funds raised from its annual banquet to meet the financial needs of breast cancer patients throughout Lancaster County.

creative experiences for people of all ages in the newly branded Art Alley. Activities will be available on First Fridays, July 7, Aug. 4, Sept. 1, and Oct. 6.
The Art Alley is located at

William Henry Place between the Lancaster City Welcome Center and Lancaster Central Market. The mission of Art Alley is to extend the First Friday experience beyond observation and into participation, and CCE will involve creative partners such as the Demuth Foundation and the Lancaster Creative Factory.
The Art Alley also seeks to
create space for artists of all kinds to showcase and sell their work and talk with the wider community. Art Alley will add to the existing opportunities to do so, such as brick-and-mortar storefronts, traditional gallery spaces, and pop-up opportunities.
Artists interested in vending at Art Alley on First Fridays may visit https:// tinyurl.com/lancasterartists.

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

The Veritas Community will host a new sermon series titled “Citizen” on Sundays, July 9 through Nov. 26. The group meets every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at HUB 450, 450 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The first 15 minutes of each gathering is dedicated to fellowship time.
The sermon series will explore what it means to be citizens of the Kingdom of God. Throughout the series, participants will discuss the Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew 5-7 and explore how to live the beatitudes in everyday life. Topics of discussion will include of anger, forgiveness, love for enemies, prayer, worry, judging others and following the way of Jesus and the Kingdom of God.
For more information about the Veritas Community, visit www.veritas.community, email Ryan Braught at ryan@veritaschurchpa.org or call 717-572-5914.

Banquet frompg 1

These activities can include assisting with medical bills, rent and mortgage payments and electric bills. Help the Fight also allocates money to provide medical screenings and mammograms for patients. During the banquet, a patient who has been assisted by the organization will share her experiences.

Help the Fight was founded in 2009 by Lynda and Dave Charles, who organized the first banquet shortly after. Lynda was inspired to create the organization following the breast cancer diagnosis of her co-worker and Dave’s sister. The treatments prevented Lynda’s sister-in-law from working, and she was left without insurance or an income. Lynda decided to organize a bake sale as Help the Fight’s first fundraiser, raising over $9,000.

Help the Fight has come a long way from being a bake sale. Over the last 14 years, the organization has continued to extend its reach and has raised over $1.1 million for breast cancer patients in the area. The annual banquet remains its largest fundraiser of the year. “All of the money we raise stays right here in the Lancaster area. We really pride ourselves on that,” Dailey said. “We’re so fortunate to have local businesses and people be a part of this and positively impact the community.”

Help the Fight is always looking for volunteers; those interested in volunteering can contact the office for more information.

Presentation to focus on Colonial notable Rittenhouse

The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) invites the public to a slideshow on the career and life of David Rittenhouse when it meets at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, in Millersville’s Municipal Center, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m.

The presenter will be Stephen J. Shaw, a military historian who has published a dozen military history magazine articles and a military history book, “German & Spanish Military Rings: A Historical Perspective (Collector’s Edition).”

Rittenhouse - a surveyor, an astronomer, an inventor, a mathematician and a maker of scientific instruments - helped establish the 12-mile-radius Delaware-Pennsylvania border; was the first director of the U.S. Mint, producing the nation’s first coins; and a leading 18th-century American scientist. Shaw’s presentation will explore these and other aspects of Rittenhouse’s life, including his involvement with other Colonial notables; his home on Wissahickon Creek; his family, which built the first paper mill in Philadelphia in 1690; his inventions; and the 1792 U.S. Mint. A question-and-answer session will conclude the program.
Shaw, a retired middle school teacher, has traveled to several European battlefields and served on active duty with the United States Marine Corps and another 20 years with the Pennsylvania National Guard, retiring as a command sergeant major. He has a special interest in Spain’s civil war and is an advocate for veterans who are being adjudicated with the Lancaster County Veterans Court. A
