Tomato Festival Will Start Serving Early By Dayna M. Reidenouer

As far as any of the members of the Blue Rock Support Group (BRSG) can recall, what was then the Goodwill Fire Company No. 1 took over the organization of the Washington Boro Tomato Festival in the late 1960s. “It’s so old, we can’t remember,” commented BRSG member Jim Pontz. When Goodwill merged with three other Manor Township fire companies to become Blue Rock Fire Rescue (BRFR) in 2011, the support group was created. As an auxiliary to the new entity, BRSG coordinates Blue Rock apparel for BRFR members, hosts annual banquets, and contributes to the purchases of new apparatus. It also hosts the Tomato Festival. “We do it for the community,” said Dick Schock, who shares festival co-chair duties with Carl Miller and Bob Howell. “If we stopped, the community would kick up a fuss.” While not much about the Tomato Festival has changed over the years - if it is not broken, why fix it? - a slight change has been made for this year’s event, which will be held on Saturdays, July 13 and 20, at Washington Boro Park, 2010 River Road. For the first time, the kitchen will open at 3 p.m., a full The Blue Rock Support Group will host the Washington Boro Tomato Festival on July 13 two hours before the carnival games and live music kick off. Women’s Self-Defense Workshops Set Saddlebag Riders Announce

Kristi Napoleonis

Napoleonis graduated from Penn State University with a degree in criminal justice, and she has taught self-defense classes for the National Rifle Association and for a private company. During the workshops on July 20, which will run from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 4 p.m., Napoleonis will focus on simple moves that can disable an attacker. The one- or two-step moves may be performed by anyone regardless of age or ability. “As long as you can move, there’s something you can do,” Napoleonis said. Napoleonis will discuss self-awareness as a way to avoid being seen as easy prey. She will also review self-defense tools and the use of pepper spray. The workshops will be capped at 15 persons each and are limited to women only. Participants should be age at least 14 years old, although younger girls will be admitted when accompanied by an adult. Napoleonis explained the age requirement by saying that she will invite attendees to discuss situations they have See Self-Defense Class pg 3

Third Biker Breakfast By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Jesus Ministries (MJM) members had held, but it was the first at Washington Boro Park, 2010 River Road, Washington Boro. “Since this is a popular riding route, we wanted to be a stop for them,” explained Saddlebag Riders member See Biker Breakfast pg 9
