During 2020, the amphitheater at Long’s Park sat empty. For 2021, Dave Wauls, president of the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation, is looking forward to filling the venue with eight different bands. “Everybody is excited, and we anticipate bigger crowds,” said Wauls, who noted that the food trucks will be back for hungry concertgoers. Lancaster County Cruisers will host its 21st annual car show on Saturday, July 3, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This rain-or-shine event will take place at the Willow Street Fire Company, 2901 Willow Street Pike, Willow Street. There are no rules regarding age, make, or model. “Bring anything,” said club vice president Jack Parke, adding that vehicles do not need to be operational. There is a cost to exhibit a vehicle, with a discount for those who register before the event. Spectators will be admitted free of charge,

In a recent interview with the Advertiser, the Conestoga River Girl Scouts Service Unit 715 emphasized its appreciation for the community’s continued support as the unit seeks to help its members become their best selves. The Conestoga River Girl Scouts have troops located in Penn Manor and Lancaster city. “Without the help of our communities, we wouldn’t have been able to sell as many cookies,” said Anne Jensen, the new service unit lead for Conestoga River Girl Scouts. “Community is vital. It’s not just about cookie sales. It’s about
support!” Jensen has been involved in Girl Scouts for 11 years. She said Girl Scouting offers opportunities for girls to become leaders, build confidence, engage in positive activities, make new and lasting friends, have fun, and make the world a better place. With the support of the community, the Conestoga River Girl Scout troops have been able to go on camping trips, learn archery, participate in activities, and complete community service projects such as tree planting and collecting food for surrounding shelters. The Conestoga River
Girl Scouts will host a Girl Scout and volunteer recruitment event on Saturday, Aug. 7. The event will take place at Manor Township Community Park, 2670 Charlestown Road, Lancaster, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. “I’m looking forward to getting the word out about Girl Scouts and what we are all about,” stated Jensen. Team Israel To Play Baseball In Lancaster Israel’s national baseball team will visit Lancaster as part of its pre-Olympic training camp this summer. The Lancaster Barnstormers will host Team Israel for a game against the Susquehanna Valley Stars at the Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, on Saturday, July 18. First pitch is scheduled for noon. The Susquehanna League is an established twilight league, dating back to 1935. It is comprised of eight teams in York County that compete in a 34-game schedule. He stated that the Kenny Rogers Band, which will appear on Aug. 22, is the real deal. “(These) are the musicians that played with Kenny as opposed to being a cover band. These guys helped write the music and played the original music,” he said. On Aug. 29, a Live Aid Tribute Show will celebrate one of the world’s biggest concerts by featuring talented local musicians. Concerts are planned beginning Sunday, July 11. Performances will start at 7:30 p.m. each Sunday through Aug. 29. Brad Zuke, chair of the Long’s Park Summer Music Series committee, said that each year the group endeavors to bring acts that represent a wide range of musical genres. In 2020, many of the bands that were booked to play just happened to be fronted by women. “It looked like it was going to be the year of the woman,” noted Zuke. “When everything was canceled, agents and bands wrote back and said, ‘Can we just move ahead to next year?’ That was our starting point (in creating this year’s schedule).” Indeed, only The Big Takeover, a reggae band scheduled to perform on Aug. 1, was not on the 2020 roster. Zuke noted that contracting bands to play the venue can take several years. He listed scheduling factors for both the performer and the amphitheater, along with travel arrangements and current visas for the performers. “Several years ago, we had Old Blind Dogs from Scotland (play a concert),” he said. “It took us six years to finally have them perform here.” This year, the opening concert on July 11 will feature Bakithi Kumalo, a South African bass player who was one of the top session musicians in his country when Paul Simon went there to develop his album “Graceland” in 1985. “Simon invited him

Located on a 23-acre organic farm at 150 Letort Road, Millersville, Homefields Care Farm is a nonprofit community-supported agriculture (CSA) program that provides employment and training for disabled individuals. Hundreds of people who have a disability or other barrier to traditional employment have engaged at Homefields, where they grow organically minded produce for community shareholders. The farm is currently home to six adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. “What I love most about working here is the people,” stated farm manager Katie Landis. “Everyone is happy to be here.” Homefields’ season runs for 24 weeks, from the last week of May to the beginning of November. People can purchase shares of the harvest, which can be customized depending on the individual’s needs. Payment plans are also available. Throughout the season, Homefields also hosts events, such as its Talks in the Field program, annual Classic Golf Tournament, and Picnic

George St., Millersville, will hold an “All Aboard” vacation Bible school (VBS) on Sunday to Thursday, July 11 to July 15, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The VBS is for children age 4 to those who just finished sixth grade. JACK DONALD Jack Donald, 90, was called into the arms of his Lord from his home on June 7th. Born in Hazleton, PA, he was the son of the late Joshua S. and Rebecca E. (Steckrote) Donald. Jack graduated from Hazleton Senior High School in 1948, then Penn State University in 1955. He graduated with an associate degree in Electrical Engineering. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict as an Aviation Electronic Technician assigned to Air Transportation Squadron VR-1. As a civilian, Jack worked for Westinghouse in Baltimore, MD and Sperry Gyroscope Company in Long Island, NY, before settling in at PP&L for a 37year run. Jack was a humble, gracious man who loved God and his family and, most of all, his beloved wife, Janie (Mary Jane Lanyon), his soulmate of 66 years. He is also survived by his four children: Barbara Stumpf, wife of Ray (deceased), Minnesota; Jan Betty, wife of Wayne, Mount Joy; John, husband of Kim, California, and Andrew, Manheim. There are five grandchildren whom he loved dearly: Naomi, wife of Jeffery Douglas, Joy, Josh, Becca, and Andrea, plus 2 darling great grandchildren, Evelyn and Cohen. A 50 plus year member of First United Methodist Church in Lancaster, Jack served as an usher crew chief for 28 years. He was an endless supporter of Jane’s work with the youth program and music in the church, but preferred to remain in the background quietly serving with a smile. He’ll be remembered for his gentle soul, his surprising sense of humor and his love of family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: Anchor Lancaster and The John P. Classes will begin on July 12 and will run in two consecutive two-week sessions, finishing by Friday, Aug. 6. Among the pre-college options are foundational classes in figure drawing, observational painting, color theory, 3D modeling in Autodesk Maya, and portfolio preparation. Other pre-college classes focus on graphic design/visual branding, concept art, digital painting in Adobe Photoshop, video production, creative writing, introduction and advanced 2D animation in Adobe Animate, and printmaking. Sealer/Stain Sanders - This position will be responsible to sand, seal and prime doors and cabinet parts in preparation for the next coat of finish. Will be required to operate a palm sander and spray cup gun. Candidates must have a proven work history. Experience in woodworking or the cabinet industry is helpful. Must be able to read and interpret measurements, work orders and be detail oriented. Will be required to lift up to 50 lbs. and work in an environment where there is exposure to dirt, dust and noise. The hours of work are Monday through Thursday, 6:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Friday, 6:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m., with overtime required as needed.
