Eagle Scouts complete community projects
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDAt the end of April, Scouts BSA

Troop 30, based at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church on Columbia Avenue, Lancaster, held a ceremony to honor two of its members who recently completed their projects to achieve the rank of Eagle. Recent Penn Manor graduate Stephan Gebhard and Penn Manor student JJ Anderson each finished a project to better the community in some way.
For Anderson’s project, he created a storage space for The Common Wheel, a nonprofit bike shop located on East King Street in Lancaster. Anderson and his father have been patrons of the shop for several years and are both BMX bike enthusiasts. “We knew the owner personally, and I wanted to give back to him and the organization,” Anderson said.
Anderson noticed that the building was running out of space to store bikes, so he got to work
outfitting the basement with storage amenities. The main goal of the project was to create a wooden deck platform in the basement that could fit multiple bikes on each shelf. Due to the limited space in the basement and narrow access points, Anderson and his team
overcome the challenge of not being able to work in a completely hands-on manner. “It was really beneficial for me in that way and working with others,” Anderson said. “It was hard not to do it my way, but it felt good to give back.”
needed to slide the wooden boards through a small window on the side of the building.
Per the criteria of an Eagle Scout project, Anderson had to lead his team of volunteers through the tasks of completing the project. This requirement provided an opportunity for him to learn about leadership and
For Gebhard’s project, he built five feral cat shelters for the Humane League of Lancaster County. Leading a team of friends, fellow Scouts and parents, Gebhard created the shelters using pressure-treated wood and screws, and each one was equipped with a door on the top. The Humane League places the shelters in specific areas with a high population of stray cats so the cats can have protection from the elements. While completing his project, Gebhard learned how to adjust his plans and adapt to the challenges presented by his project. Initially, he wanted to create a dog park, but was unable to acquire permission from the borough. Gebhard saw the Humane League’s need for cat

Pastor celebrates retirement after decades of service
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDOn June 4, Rick Rimert officially closed the chapter on years of ministry. Rimert served as a pastor for multiple congregations in the Penn Manor area for 35 years and has returned to East Petersburg, where he grew up, to spend his time in retirement.

A celebration to honor Rimert and his wife, Diane, was held on June 4 at Conestoga United Methodist Church (UMC), where he led the congregation for 13 years. Prior to serving the community at Conestoga UMC, Rimert was the pastor at Calvary UMC in Mohnton for five years. Since graduating from Lancaster Theological Seminary in 1990, Rimert has also served the congregations of Colemanville UMC, Safe Harbor UMC and Berwyn UMC.

Lancaster County Cruisers plan annual car show

Lancaster County Cruisers will host its 23rd annual car show at the Willow Street Fire Company, 2901 Willow Street Pike, on Saturday, July 1. The rain-or-shine event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and it will benefit local nonprofit organizations in Conestoga and Quarryville. Registration will be available for a set price on the day of the show, and the first 150 participants to register will receive a dash plaque. Owners of any vehicle from classic cars to motorcycles to trucks may register

for the show. Over 40 trophies, which are provided by the local businesses that sponsor the event, will be given out during the show. Lancaster County Cruisers will present a President’s Trophy as well as a Best of Show Trophy. Music will be provided throughout the day by disc jockey Jeff Primaldi. Food will be available to purchase from two food trucks, and desserts will be sold by an ice cream vendor and a baked goods stand.
Every year, the club donates a portion of the funds raised by the show to Solanco Neighborhood

“Scouts teaches you to be a better person. I’ve learned so many different things over the years that will serve me in my life.”
“It was a privilege and a joy to serve for all of those years,” Rimert said. “I met some great people and found great opportunities that I never would have had otherwise.”

When he was young, Rimert was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in East Petersburg. He graduated from Hempfield High School in 1971 and attended Elizabethtown College, graduating in 1975. Rimert was working as a manager at McDonald’s at the age of 34 when he felt called to become more involved in the ministry. He continued to work as a restaurant manager during his first year of seminary. “I had been feeling a nudge from God to serve in a more complete way,” Rimert said. “I had been active in church throughout my life, but I felt called to join the seminary.”
After becoming ordained, Rimert was selected by the church to serve in Penn Manor, and he moved out of East Petersburg with Diane and their two young sons. The family

rented out their home in East Petersburg and lived in parsonages during Rimert’s career as a pastor, and his two sons graduated from Penn Manor High School.

Although Penn Manor was one of the geographically closest communities that Rimert could have been selected for, he hadn’t spent much time in the area and was unfamiliar with it. “People were so kind and welcoming. It was a really good experience,” Rimert said. “I made so many connections there and continue to keep in touch with people.”

Now that he has entered retirement, Rimert looks forward to just being able to be a worshipper instead of leading a congregation. He also looks forward to reconnecting with the community he was raised in. Although East Petersburg may not be the exact same place where he spent his youth, it’s still his hometown; as a boy, he delivered newspapers to the home where he will spend his retirement years.

shelters and shifted his focus to creating them instead of a park. “I’m very passionate about animals, so I was still able to incorporate that into my project,” Gebhard said. “I learned a lot about leading people and communicating.”

Anderson and Gebhard have been friends for many years as they have risen through the ranks at Troop 30. They both credit the program with teaching them leadership skills and discipline and connecting them with their peers. “Scouts teaches you to be a better person,” Anderson said. “I’ve learned so many different things over the years that will serve me in my life.”
Anderson will begin his senior year at Penn Manor High School in the fall. Gebhard, who graduated this year, plans to attend Penn State York in the fall. “I’ll miss the different connections I made through Scouts,” Gebhard said. “If I didn’t have those people, I never would have been able to push myself.”

Ministries’ food bank in Quarryville. In recent years, Lancaster County Cruisers also decided to use the show to support the Building Bridges Foundation at Anderson Farm in Conestoga. Building Bridges offers equine therapy services to veterans who are experiencing PTSD from their time in the armed forces. “Helping the food bank and Building Bridges Foundation makes all the work everyone in the club does worthwhile,” said Richard Lanham, a member of Lancaster County Cruisers and event coordinator for
KING’S FENCING

the car show. “We also want to thank Willow Street Fire Company for allowing us to have our car show there for all of these years.”
Lancaster County Cruisers will operate a booth at the event to offer information on the club and applications for membership. The club is open to car enthusiasts of any kind; owning a vehicle is not a requirement to join. The members of Lancaster County Cruisers meet once every month to plan the club’s event, coordinate trips to car shows and discuss vehicles that are for sale. Although the majority of

its members own vintage cars, the club welcomes those with vehicles of any kind. “We don’t care if you have an old car or a new car or what country it’s from,” said Lanham. “It’s a great place to meet other car enthusiasts and to get involved with shows.” In addition to the annual car show, Lancaster County Cruisers organizes a picnic every summer and a luncheon for its members around Christmas time. Bowling program offered at Leisure Lanes

On June 6, Lee Keller kicked off the annual bowling program at Leisure Lanes Bowling and Golf Center, 3440 Columbia Ave. Meetings are held every Tuesday at 6 p.m. and will continue until the end of the 11-week program on Aug. 22., with the exception of July 4. The program is open to people 18 years old or younger, who may register for a small fee at any point through its duration.
During each meeting, participants bowl three games. The first game is primarily instructional; students learn about various techniques to employ when bowling. The remaining two games also contain educational elements, but the scores are recorded. Each student’s score will be logged over the course of the program to highlight his or her improvement. “I’ve learned quite a few things through years of bowling that I want to pass along to the youngsters,” Keller said. “The ultimate goal is to get them to be happy about what they did during the game.”
One of Keller’s goals when he created the program two years ago was to attract more interest in the sport, as well as encourage students to compete on Hempfield High School’s bowling team. In the first year of the program, the meetings only entailed the two regular matches; Keller decided to add the instructional game the following year after drawing inspiration from coaches of bowling teams and meeting professional
National team members to offer field hockey clinic
A field hockey clinic with Penn Manor alumnae and current national team members Brooke and Emma DeBerdine will be offered on Thursday, July 13, at Comet Field, located on Millersville Road, Lancaster. Participants will work on positional and technical skills and learn how to stand out and succeed in the game of field hockey.
Children in kindergarten through grade two will participate from 9 a.m. to noon. After a question-and-answer session from noon to 12:30 p.m., children in grades three through six will work with the DeBerdine sisters from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Spots are limited. To register, visit https://bit.ly/DeBerdineClinic.
Heritage Sunday planned at Boehm’s UMC

The Boehm’s Chapel Society will hold its annual Heritage Sunday event on June 25 in historic Boehm’s Chapel at Boehm’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 13 W. Boehms Road, Willow Street. A society business meeting will be held at 3 p.m., followed by the worship service at 4 p.m.

The event is one in which many descendants of Martin Boehm, who gave early Methodist circuit riders a place to say, and whose home was a meeting place for early Methodists, an opportunity to return to the chapel, which has stood since 1791.

bowler Shannon O’Keefe. While visiting his son in Illinois, Keller bowled at the same lane as O’Keefe, who has won the Professional Women’s Bowling Association Player of the Year award two of the last three years. O’Keefe is also the head coach of the bowling team at McKendree University, and Keller has incorporated lessons he learned from her into his program.
Keller also has his own wealth of experience to draw from; he ran the junior bowling program at the former Columbia Bowling Alley for 15 years. Keller first became involved with coaching when his two sons joined the program, and he remained a coach after they left it.
The Keller family is rife with bowlers, many of whom played on Hempfield High School’s team. Although Keller no longer bowls, he and his wife regularly go to Leisure Lanes for the high school’s home games. “I don’t bowl anymore, but I get my enjoyment from seeing the kids leave the alley with smiles on their faces,” Keller said. “I started working with some of the players on the team in the last year or two. Once they reach the limits of what I can teach them, I recommend a more advanced instructor.”
For more information, email Keller at nippy.keller@gmail.com.
Dale Mylin, a society board member and a member of Byerland Mennonite Church, where Martin Boehm was pastor and bishop, will present a message titled “Keeping Your Hand to the Plow: On Being an Influencer.” Mylin is a ninth-generation descendant of Martin Meylin, an early county settler.
Music will be provided by soloist and keyboard player Oksana Reedy, music director at Boehm’s UMC, and violinist Tammy Ober.
Following the worship service, Jeff and Sue Frey, who own the nearby Boehm family homestead, will offer a hayride to the farm.
Boehm’s Chapel is located south of Willow Street, off Route 272.
