The 2019 Summer Music Series at Long’s Park,
The hugs started almost as soon as the members of Vocal Harmonix gathered at Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, for a rehearsal on June 10. One woman had recently received a cancer diagnosis. Another had returned from traveling. Yet another had had surgery. Whether the reason was positive or upsetting, the embraces abounded. “We’re a very caring group,” one member explained after the rehearsal concluded, again with hugs, this time for the group’s newest member, who was voted in that night. “Our sisterhood is very strong,” agreed director Lori Jo Whitehaus. “This is like a big family.” Currently, members range in age from early 20s to 91, and while there is a rigorous audition process to get in, it See Vocal Harmonix pg 4

Pequea Elementary students, inspired by the book “A Long Walk to Water,” carried jugs of water on their heads to raise funds for a South Sudan water project. Students, staff members, and parents at three Penn Manor elementary schools recently raised nearly $2,700 to support efforts to bring water to South Sudan after students were inspired after reading “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park. The book is based on the true story
of 11-year-old “Lost Boy” Salva Dat, who was displaced by the Sudanese civil war and had to walk through southern Sudan, Ethiopia, and Kenya in search of a safe haven. It includes the fictional character Nya, an 11-year-old girl who walks eight hours each day to fetch water for her family from a pond. See Student Fundraisers pg 7
Encounter Church, 300 Hideaway Drive, Quarryville, has regularly hosted an annual motorcycle ride and picnic. Typically, that event has happened on a Sunday, when folks are encouraged to ride their motorcycles to church, then go on a ride and enjoy a picnic following the service. Thanks to the church now holding services on Sundays at 8:30 and 10:45 a.m., the motorcycle event has been moved up a day. Biker Saturday will take place on June 29. A bike show will run from 1 to 3:30 p.m. A ride will start at the church at 3:30 p.m. and return by 5 p.m., at which time there will be a cookout dinner. Everyone is invited to stay for Encounter Night, a
