Fire Company Will Welcome Members of the Community

Bob Michener knew what he was getting himself into, so he has no regrets.

Michener, who oversees the Conestoga Volunteer Fire Company’s fire prevention program, had long been urging fellow firefighters to welcome visitors to the grounds.

“My crew has been asking for an open house,” said Michener. “(The other fire company members) finally said, ‘All right, we’re going to do an open house, and you’re doing it.’”

He took his new task in stride.

“That’s how it works in a volunteer organization,” Michener said matter of factly. “Don’t bring it up if you’re not willing to carry it out.”

The first open house will be held Saturday, June 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Conestoga Volunteer Fire Company, 3290 Main St., Conestoga. The fire company will provide hot dogs, ice pops, and drinks.

“We have two reasons for doing the open house,” Michener said.

“The main reason is to let the public know who we are, what we

do, and what it takes to run this company.” The other reason is to provide fire prevention tips to members of the community.

Volunteers will give tours of the apparatus and answer questions. There will be hands-on activities for kids, who will have the opportunity to learn how to operate a fire hose. Lancaster Cast Iron has donated a skillet so

Cruise into Conestoga for a collection of classic car shows.

First Responders Friends, a local nonprofit organization, will hold three activities this summer leading up to its annual event in September.

Cars and Cones will be held on Fridays, June 20, July 18, and Aug. 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Safe Harbor Park, 5365 River Road, Conestoga. The events will be canceled if it rains.

Participants must make a donation of a nominal set fee, which includes two bowls of

Outdoors Experiences Will “Peak” Teens’ Interest

It’s said that faith will move mountains.

Mountain Conquerors participants are neither required to move a mountain nor expected to scale one on their own.

Instead they will have an opportunity to embark on a potentially life-altering adventure.

Mountain Conquerors is an organization founded in 2010 by pastor Matt Kroll. “It is an outdoor camp that teaches

leadership skills, life skills, and grows character,” he said. “It provides the experience of a lifetime. That’s our motto, and that’s what we do.”

Until this year, the expedition, which is free thanks to sponsors, was only available for boys ages 13 to 16. MCg, Mountain Conquerors Girls, will have a separate trip for girls in the same age range. Applicants must be residents of Lancaster County.

The inaugural MCg, which will be led by Kari Stauffer, will take

Sierra Club Awards Grants

The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group, as part of its activities celebrating Earth Day, April 22, announced the names of 15 Lancaster County 501(c)(3) organizations that have been awarded Green Project grants. Each of the organizations, in submitted proposals, requested support of a venture that promotes sustainability, expands environmental awareness, and improves green infrastructure.

With this latest round of awards, each up to $500, a total of 110 Lancaster County organizations have received Green Grants from the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group over the past 10 years.

The grant recipients and their projects are Church of the Apostles United Church of Christ to prepare for a Science in the Park program that brings inner-city kids to the church’s 5-acre Rader Park; the Conservation Foundation of Lancaster County, supporting its environmental literacy project, which includes a professional development conference on elements of watershed biodiversity that can be shared with students in the classroom; and Franklin & Marshall College, designing and painting the college’s compost bin in Buchanan Park to make it more attractive and then using it as a model to redesign other F&M-Lancaster Compost Co-Op bins in Lancaster city.

In addition, the Friends of the Railroad Museum, constructing a new native plant garden with signage at the northeast side of the museum in Strasburg; Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center, purchasing native and pollinator plants to be placed in front of and alongside its barn with the goal of restoring local ecosystems and enhancing water quality; and Historic Poole Forge, stabilizing embankments, removing invasive vines in rain gardens, restocking plants lost to drought, and replacing a rotted fence in the pollinator garden.

Also, Homefields Care Farm, building a biochar retort furnace that will impound carbon and make biologically active and improved soil modifications throughout its acreage; Immerse International, creating a mini meadow on a small portion of its campus as a continuation of a plan to add more native plants and trees throughout its property; and Let’s Go 1-2-3, in partnership with Northeast Neighbors/Northeast Green and Lancaster Cemetery, preparing for its fall community cleanup at the 20-acre Lancaster Cemetery, a project that will bolster and supplement past efforts to clear out, replant, and

St. Paul Lutheran Church Plans VBS

St. Paul Lutheran Church, 222 N. George St., Millersville, will host “Water, Water, Water Everywhere” vacation Bible school (VBS) from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 22, through Thursday, June 26. Children age 4 through rising sixth-graders are welcome to attend the VBS, which will feature music, crafts, Bible stories, games and snacks.

As a VBS ending celebra-

tion, there will be a free picnic on June 26 beginning at 5 p.m. for children and their families, followed by an ice cream social. To register a child for VBS, contact the church office at 717-872-7392 on Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to noon or visit www.stpaullutheranmillersville.org and select “VBS Registration 2025.” Preregistration is appreciated, but not required.

“It was a success,” said Heckrote. “People liked it, so we thought we would try three times this year.” Brookfield Renewable, which owns Safe Harbor Park, allows the group to use the property, as well as electricity and ice.

board of directors of the Conestoga Volunteer Fire Company and captain of the fire police, in addition to serving on the Conestoga Township zoning hearing board.

“It’s as much a community event as it is a car show,” said Bob Heckrote, who is the secretary of First Responders Friends. “It’s a Friday-night get-together for socialization. It’s something we thought would be nice, plus it’s a fundraiser because our purpose is to be able to support our local first responders with whatever needs they have.”

The first Cars and Cones

First Responders Friends supports the Conestoga Volunteer Fire Company, West Willow Fire Company, Lancaster EMS, and the Pequea Township Police Department.

“Our main objective is to raise money for first responders,” said Rich Graham, who is the group’s president. “The second one would be to be community minded.”

Graham is also on the

“Now that I’m retired, I’m just trying to give back to the community and bring people together,” he said. “Everyone in the group is the same way. They just want good things happening in our community.”

Nate Heisey, Diane Lefever, Mike Keiser, Joel Hertzog, Melanie Scheid, and Jason Sweigert are also members of First Responders Friends.

“Everybody volunteers their time and resources, and members come from different backgrounds, which gives us different resources,” said Heckrote.

Several other people assist with operating events. “We are always looking for people who want to be on the board or help out with the things we have,” said Graham.

Meetings are held at Graham’s home in Conestoga on the first Thursday of every month except December. Call Graham at 717-917-6500 for more information.

First Responders Friends was founded approximately 15 years ago, and Graham joined shortly thereafter. It was originally Friends of Southern Regional Police before the name changed after there was no longer a regional police force.

First Responders Friends either fulfills specific requests or makes monetary donations. The group has purchased flashlights and a sign that indicates a vehicle’s speed for the police department and even bought a police car soon after the organization was founded.

The group hands out candy on Halloween and supports the Pequea Township and Conestoga Township National Night Out events.

“We try to get involved with as many community things as we can,” Graham said.

First Responders Friends’ biggest activity is the annual Conestoga Classic Car Show. The 12th edition will be held on Main Street in Conestoga on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration will be required for that event, and people can sign up starting in July.

he will give a mini version of that presentation at the open house. “Questions that kids ask are interesting,” he said, adding that some people, including adults, have the misconception that firefighters magically appear when 911 is dialed. “That’s not a guarantee in a volunteer organization, depending on who is around that day and the time of day. … (The volunteers) do not live here. It just seems like it. We do the best we can.”

Michener mentioned that to lead into a point that likely seems obvious, but it is still worth reiterating. “The greatest fire prevention thing is to not have a fire in the first place,” he said. “But if you do, (we want you to know) the steps to follow.”

One demonstration will show how fast a fire can spread. During a simulation, firefighters will wait five minutes after the dispatch to represent the time it takes for volunteers to get to the station and suit up. They will wait for another five minutes to account for the time it takes to get to the scene.

all family members are accounted for.

Michener started spearheading the fire company’s fire prevention program after responding to a call that wound up being a fatal fire. “I was sitting on the bumper of the truck, and I thought, ‘That was preventable. If there had been a smoke detector at the base of the steps and a second one at the top of the steps, that could’ve been prevented,’” said Michener.

As part of its fire prevention efforts, Conestoga Volunteer Fire Company is partnering with the American Red Cross to offer free smoke alarms with free installation to all Conestoga Township residents. Anyone interested can call 717-584-5649; messages will be returned.

Michener said the fire company is always in need of more volunteers. Anyone interested in joining can visit at any of the organization’s weekly activities. Members get together every Monday beginning at 7 p.m. for maintenance, meetings, and training.

“People will be able to see how fast a fire can grow and why it’s so important for early detection and to get out,” said Michener. “If you can’t get out, we’ll tell you things you can do to buy time. There are some simple things like closing the door of the room you are in and waiting by a window for firefighters to arrive.”

Michener noted that families should formulate escape route plans in the home and decide on a meeting place so that first responders will know

“We don’t just need firefighters,” Michener said. “We need anyone who can assist with fund drives, work behind the scenes on administrative things, or help with the fire police. Don’t think we’re going to make you run into a burning building if you join the fire company. If that’s not your thing, we’ll find something else that you want to do.”

place Monday, June 30, to Thursday, July 3. The application deadline is Monday, June 23. The boys’ excursion will be held Monday, Aug. 4, to Saturday, Aug. 9. The application deadline is Monday, July 21. Base camp for both trips will be set up in Halifax.

Each trip is limited to 12 participants, so everyone who applies is not ensured a spot. Forms are available at www.mountainconquerors .squarespace.com.

“Our job is to provide an experience for these kids that will last a lifetime and get them plugged in, if they’re

not already plugged in, to a healthy structure,” said Kroll, who is the program’s coordinator and the leader of the boys’ camp. “Whether that’s church. Whether that’s a teen center. That’s the goal. We don’t want to reinvent the wheel of the structure.”

Staff members, who are all volunteers, will lead campers on practice hikes before taking a backpacking trip along the Black Forest Trail. “The whole premise of Mountain Conquerors is to build young (people) of character,” said Kroll, who is pastor of The Lord’s House of Prayer in Lancaster city. “We use the outdoors to facilitate the classroom. Subjects we are really (focusing) on are character, potential, goal setting, teamwork, leadership skills, and overcoming fears.”

like that before.” Reed said he teaches younger hikers to embrace the things they can’t control and take on the challenges.”

Justin Reed participated in Mountain Conquerors in 2020 and is now one of the trek’s leaders. “I learned skills and that you can overcome things with God helping you,” he said. “I had never experienced anything

Mountain Conquerors is designed to test one’s mindset. “You don’t know what character you have until you put it under pressure,” Kroll said. “Are you going to whine? Are you going to quit? You start hiking up a hill; your true character comes out. We’re good with that because now we have something to deal with.”

The pastor cited Galatians 5, which includes the allegory of the Fruit of the Holy Spirit and characteristics such as patience and kindness. “We’re looking at

all those things, the staff included,” Kroll said. “We all need to grow, and we want to challenge each other and encourage each other and hold each other accountable. By changing your thinking and the words you speak, you can change the outcome. The kids begin to overcome the obstacles they didn’t think they could ever overcome. These are life skills you can teach in a classroom but can’t experience unless you really do it.”

Mountain Conquerors camp provides challenges that test the mind and body. Traditionally, on the first day of the boys’ camp, participants are instructed to plant a flag after 90 minutes of hiking. The following day, campers get a workout on the ropes course before going on the same hike as the day before. They are challenged to beat their time from day one. “There’s never been a year where they haven’t beaten their mark,” said Kroll.

At the end of the week, campers must trek one by one up a steep incline that Kroll refers to as Challenge Hill. Until that point, everything is done as a team. “It’s great to have a support network, but there are many times in life when it’s just you, your hurdle, and God,” Kroll said. “I’ve seen some amazing things in this camp. From the beginning to the end, the transformation of the kids is pretty cool.”
