n June 2, 85-year-old school bus driver and Penn Manor alumna Ella Sensenig was honored for 41 years of service with Penn Manor School District. During the celebration, Sensenig was presented with flowers, a giant cookie, a charm bracelet with a bus on it, and other gifts. Sensenig, who grew up in Safe Harbor, moved to Millersville a few years after marrying her husband in 1955. Her aunt and uncle had built the house she and her husband purchased, and she has lived there ever since. Throughout her life, Sensenig has worked several jobs. She started her career as a bus driver for the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (CTC). This was a parttime position in the evenings. When a full time driving position opened, she filled it. For 30 years between her bus runs, she was a crossing guard. Sensenig also worked in a research lab after graduating from Penn Manor, was a part-time police officer in Millersville, and served as a nurse’s aid.

Prima Theatre is hosting concerts featuring the music of Queen and Journey. Upcoming concerts will occur outdoors from a portable stage in the parking lot at Liberty Place, located behind the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, at 8 p.m. on Friday, June 18, and Saturday, June 19. The songs will be led by Grace Byrnes, Donovan Hoffer, and Asia Littlejohn. Byrnes starred as Lucy Harris in Prima’s 2019 production of “Jekyll and Hyde.” Hoffer performed at the Fulton Theatre in “Chicago” as Mary Sunshine and in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” as Clopin. Littlejohn is a vocalist who has performed around the world, including as a soloist at Lincoln Center. On June 8, Prima hosted a media preview of the show. The band performed four songs to give the small audience a taste of what is to come.

“Not a lot of people can say this, but there are no jobs I had that I didn’t like,” she said. “That pleases me a lot.” Sensenig said she is not as eager as many people are to retire. “Physically, I’m fine. I would love to keep going, but I’d like to go out with a good record!” she stated with a laugh. One thing she regrets is not taking the time to write down events that happened over the course of her career. “I could probably write a book!” she exclaimed. “The kids, their parents, and the Eschbach Bus Service have been so good to me.” Although she does not consider herself a hobby-oriented person, Sensenig plans to buy a few paint-by-number kits to keep herself busy in the wintertime. “But I love driving,” she said. “As soon as I get on that crazy bus, I feel Ella Sensenig developed bonds with the different. I feel good. I can’t explain it.” students she drove on her school bus.

A lifelong paddler and river enthusiast, Warren was one of the first two women to paddle from Minneapolis to Hudson Bay in 2011. Her new book is “Hudson Bay Bound.” Warren will share stories from the more than 2,000-mile journey when she meets the students. “Hudson Bay Bound” is available from the Lancaster County Library System and for purchase from local bookstores. The Lancaster County Youth Conservation School will take place on Monday to Friday, July 26 to 30. Open to students ages 14 to 16, this summer field school is made possible through a 43-year-old partnership between the Lancaster County Conservation District and local sportsmen’s clubs. Concert Series To Feature Comedic Music Act

The “Sounds of Strasburg” series will continue in Strasburg Community Park, 151 Precision Ave., on Saturday, June 26, at 6:30 p.m. with a solo concert by John Bressler of “The John Bressler Show.” Bressler is a piano player and keyboardist who blends music and comedy in an act that is celebrating over a quarter of a century. He is employed as an entertainer on cruise ships and is a nominee for Entertainer of the Year on Princess Cruises. Admission is free. Concert guests are advised to bring blankets and lawn chairs for seating on soft turf within the park’s terraced amphitheater. Coolers and alcoholic beverages will be prohibited. Those who wish to eat a pre-show meal may use the picnic tables in and beside the park’s pavilion. Vendors will be present to offer food, cold beverages and Italian water ice. “Having you guys here … that’s what I’ve been missing through this whole COVID thing,” stated Hoffer. “I can look at you and connect with you, and that’s what we needed at this point … the audience.” Hoffer said he got the gig while sitting in his apartment in Chicago. He was preparing to leave for an audition for America’s Got Talent (AGT) when Prima’s executive artistic producer, Mitch Nugent, called him. Over a decade ago, Nugent and Hoffer did a Glee cabaret together. “It was the first call postCOVID, so it was a magical, collaborative thing, and the way he spoke about it made me know I was all in,” said Hoffer. Safety protocols will be in place at the concerts, including distanced circles chalked on the ground per party. Patrons must bring their own lawn chairs. The location will be handicapped-accessible, and on-site lavatories will be available. “I’m so excited for the people to be in a group again together because so much of the experience of live theater is the other people in the room,” stated Megan Witkovsky, Prima’s director of patron experiences. “I think they’re going

LOHF (Lancaster Osteopathic Health Foundation) has approved funding to five programs meeting youths and child behavioral health needs in Lancaster County. These programs seek to improve the mental wellbeing of youth and children, especially those who may not otherwise get the support they need. Bench Mark Program Open Gym was awarded $10,000. The mentors at Bench Mark Program aim to use exercise, academics, and career counseling to help atrisk youths have a successful future. Although life on the streets is temporary, the mentors commit to students’ well-being for as long as needed. Mom’s House - Positive Behavioral Health Intervention and Support Services was awarded $15,800. Mom’s House is open to all singleparent students enrolled in school full time. The organization serves young females trying to earn a GED diploma, high school diploma, or college degree. Children receive a comprehensive early childhood curriculum designed for child development - including health, resiliency, social competence, and language - and kindergarten readiness. Patients R Waiting Diversifying Doulas Initiative received a $12,000 grant. This program addresses health disparities through workforce develop-

ment in various aspects of care. The program connects with the community through its doula program, a health equity book club, and medical activism through COVID-19 vaccination events and more. It also serves students and is currently helping 12 students with test preparation, resume, and personal statement workshops and graduate school application strategy. Advoz - Diversifying Restorative Justice was awarded $10,000. Advoz provides services for youths in the restorative justice program by partnering with the Office of Juvenile Probation. Trained facilitators work with victims and offenders in victim-offender conferencing, so youths can take responsibility for their actions through a meeting with the victim. They can learn how to make amends and move on from what has happened. Horizons at Lancaster Country Day School - School Counselor was awarded $7,000. This summer program is designed to stop learning loss for low-income public school children. The program offers a structured environment with an academic focus, nurturing staff, and individualized attention. Additional funds will be available in the fall. LMLRA Sets 64th Annual Show The Lancaster Muzzle Loading Rifle Association (LMLRA) will hold its 64th annual gun show at a new location this year: the Solanco Fairgrounds, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville. The show will be open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 19, and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 20. The show will feature more than 100 tables, and the public will be able to buy, sell, or trade items at the show. “One of the reasons I wanted to start my own organization was to enable and empower volunteers to be involved in the whole process (of raising and training service dogs),” said Linzey Zoccola, who founded Phoenix Assistance Dogs (PAD) in 2009. Zoccola and assistant director Ashley Bosserman have recently begun working with dogs, volunteer trainers, and clients in the organization’s new Warwick Center offices in Lititz. Many of the dogs that become PAD service dogs are goldadors - a mix of golden retrievers and Labrador retrievers. “ We work with community breeders, and we breed as well in our program,” said Zoccola, who had 7-weekold Luxor - named for the Pixar office lamp - and Barley at the center during the inter-

view. “Both Sumatra, the mom, and Easton, the dad, are from our program,” explained Zoccola. “Puppy raisers need good communication skills,” explained Zoccola. “Almost any lifestyle and activity level is wonderful as long as the individual is eager to learn.” According to Zoccola, the only other qualifications are that someone in the household be able to drive the puppy to the vet and to the center for training and that the raisers have internet access for training purposes, since the puppy raiser manual is online. “We have had wonderful teenage puppy raisers and wonderful retired puppy raisers,” said Zoccola, who noted that active families with small children are welcome as well. Bosserman noted that puppy raisers are required to attend two lessons a month at the Lititz location to work with PAD trainers. She specified that puppy raisers help dogs learn all the skills they need as service dogs beginning with sit and stay, and, when the dog is older, how to open doors and shut off lights. “We cover a lot (of expenses) for our puppy raisers,” she said, pointing out that food, vet costs, and grooming are included. “(Puppy raisers) need to provide treats, toys, dog beds, and lots of love,” she said. PAD has developed a timeline for puppies that matches them with puppy raisers at two months old after they have begun to be housetrained. At 12 months, the

dogs undergo an evaluation, and at 14 months, X-rays are taken of hips and elbows, which are then evaluated by orthopedic veterinarians befor the dogs move forward with the program. Because it’s very important to PAD that clients are partnered with dogs that can meet their needs, it can take several rounds of clients meeting puppies before a match is made. “It depends on what the puppy needs to learn to make a final placement,” explained Zoccola, who noted a smaller female dog with an upbeat personality would not be matched with an individual who has weight-bearing mobility issues. “We would look for individuals who need

retrieving and door opening (for that dog),” she said, adding that during meetings PAD representatives and puppy raisers examine dog and client interaction. “We are looking at the individual’s body language when they’re working with the dog,” she noted. “We are watching how the dog is interacting with that individual.” Zoccola added that puppy raisers have input into this process. “We help them to learn what we’re looking for, and together we match that dog with someone with a disability,” she said. Hundreds of cars will storm downtown Columbia on Saturday, June 19, and they’ll bring the thunder. Thunder on the River, the annual Columbia Lions Club car show, will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Locust Street between Front and Fifth streets. A minute-long engine revving by participants will be featured at noon, meant to simulate the sound of a thunderstorm sweeping across the river. The show is open to all makes and models of cars, trucks and motorcycles. While past events have drawn more than 500 vehicles, including 100 same-day registrants, organizers decided to

The show is sold-out for entrants. “Our No. 1 goal was to keep Thunder on the River going for our car owners,” said Paul Resch, vice president of the Lions and chairman of the car show committee. “Some have been coming to the show for 15 years and from as far away as Delaware and Maryland.” Food will be available for purchase from restaurants, churches, nonprofit groups and food vendors. The Hogs and Heroes Foundation Inc. Pennsylvania Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 Juniors will hold its first Juniors Bikea-thon. Hogs and Heroes is a national foundation with the mission to sponsor and fundraise for the United States military and first responders. Proceeds from the event will benefit Angels of America’s Fallen, a nonprofit organization that encourages and funds activities for the children of fallen firefighters, military personnel, and members of law enforcement. Between grief counseling, scholarships, and more, Angels of America’s Fallen supports the children all year, every year until adulthood. There will be two opportunities to attend the Bike-a-thon. The first Bike-a-thon will occur on Saturday, June 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Amos Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville. The second Bike-a-thon will take place on Sunday, June 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Cousler Park, 1060 Church Road, York. Both bike routes will be on walking trails, which are closed off to vehicular traffic. During the event, participants will ride for an hour to raise money. Anyone under the age of 18 can participate in the Bike-athon, and the public is encouraged to attend. Participants are required to wear their own helmets and bring their own bicycles. The Lions Club took over sponsorship of the show in 2014. Other trophy categories include best engine, best import, best interior, best exterior, best truck, best vintage, best cycle and most unique.
