Summer Of Good News

Child Evangelism Fellowship will hold Good News Clubs, vacation Bible school programs, and Five-Day Clubs throughout Lancaster County this summer.

“We reach more children in the summer than during the school year because each week we are in a different location,” said Nadine Welk, children’s ministry specialist coordinator with Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF), perhaps best known for the Good News Clubs the organization runs after school. Over the summer, CEF organizes FiveDay Clubs, vacation Bible school (VBS) programs, and Good News Camps. This year, summer programs will be held at 17 locations in Lancaster County. Welk explained that the basic ministry curriculum is the same for all programs, which begin with a 90-minute activity period including large group game time, welcome and prayer, a Word Up period with a catchy phrase concerning the main lesson, Bible verses and songs, a Bible lesson, a review, and closing games. Five-Day Clubs, which use

the 90-minute basic format, are held in host homes. For the summer of 2022, host homes have been secured in the Hempfield area, the Lampeter-Strasburg area, Lititz, Mount Joy, the city of Lancaster, Manheim, Manheim Township, and Paradise. Hosts generally invite participants to their home, where CEF summer missionaries and staff oversee the program. VBS programs are held at churches. They add a snack and a 30minute craft to the basic program. “The church that hosts us will provide volunteers to help with the crafts,” said Welk, who explained that CEF missionaries and staff work with the church VBS director on the craft and can be present to help if needed. CEF VBS programs are lined up at seven area churches. They are Smithville Church of God in New Providence, Monday, July 11, to Friday, July 15; Victory Church, Columbia, Monday, July 18, to Friday, July 22; Conestoga

United Methodist Church (UMC), Conestoga, July 18, to 22; ACTS Covenant Fellowship, Strasburg, Monday, July 25, to Friday, July 29; Christ UMC, Lancaster, July 25 to 29; Crossings Community Church, Manheim, Monday, Aug. 1, to Friday, Aug. 5; and Refton Brethren in Christ Church, Refton, Aug. 1 to 5. Day camps, which are held weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., are scheduled for Grace Baptist Church, Marietta, July 11 to 15, and Elizabethtown Grace Church, from Monday, Aug. 8, through Friday, Aug. 12. “The difference with camp is that we add a lot of enrichment activities,” said Welk. “This summer, we will be focusing on the Wordless Book, which is a way of explaining salvation to children without any written words.” Campers bring their own lunches, but a snack is provided. “(For camps) we have water day on Fridays,” said Welk. “The kids are encouraged to wear a bathing suit

with a T-shirt over it, and we use buckets and hoses, and the kids love it.” “Our theme for all our programs this summer is ‘Turned Around,’” explained Welk. “All of our lessons talk about how a belief in Jesus and a relationship with God transforms your life.” Welk said that CEF Lancaster summer missionaries and interns, ages 14 to 18, will train at Camp Harmony in western Pennsylvania in June. During their week at camp, they will learn the program and be evaluated on each part that they teach. “So it is older kids teaching younger about Jesus,” said Welk. Space is limited in the camps, and registration for each program is required one week before the program starts. Children may be registered for a program by clicking on the “summer programs” button at www.ceflancaster.org. Readers who have specific questions may call 717-569-5412.

The Penn Manor Board of School Directors has appointed Pat Tocci as the school district’s new athletic director, effective Monday, June 20. Tocci, currently senior director and chief revenue officer at the National Wrestling Coaches Association, will replace Steve Kramer, who was Penn Manor athletic director from July 2019 until April 2022. “I am very thankful to the Penn Manor administration and school board for entrusting me to lead the athletic department,” Tocci said. “Penn Manor is a well-respected district, not just within the Lancaster-Lebanon League, but within District 3 and beyond. I’m looking forward to continuing that legacy and helping our student-athletes and coaches continue to represent our community with respect, class and sportsmanship.” Tocci said he was attracted to the Penn Manor athletic director job because it provides “an opportunity to invest in the school district’s future in developing strong See Tocci pg 2

Comets Claim First District Three 6A Softball Title

Penn Manor’s softball team defeated Manheim Township 4-2 on Thursday, June 2 at Messiah University to claim the school’s first District Three 6A softball championship. BY MONA STEINHAUER

Penn Manor’s softball team just keeps on winning. They captured the Section One crown, went on to win the Lancaster-Lebanon League tournament and Thursday, June 2 continued to roll by clinching their first District Three 6A championship over league rival Manheim Township at Messiah University’s Starry Athletic Complex. The 4-2 victory was their third

two run win over the Streaks this season and pushed the Comets record to 24-2. “This was the third time we had to beat a team three times,” noted head coach Dave Stokes referring to Manor’s three wins over Hempfield and Warwick. “These kids just don’t let these games get too big for them. I’m almost speechless. They just keep achieving.” Township came out aggressive on the bases but was

thrown out at home by Emily Riggs after a lead-off triple and out stealing second by catcher Jordan Bailey. Manor jumped in front with one run in the bottom half. Riggs and Audrey Paterson worked consecutive two out walks and Riggs scored when Maddie Mitchell singled to center. The Comets scored twice in the second inning. With one out, Bria Booth singled and Kaitlyn Ream drew a walk.

Kira Green followed with a RBI single to center. Bailey smacked a grounder to short and, when the throw went wild, Ream raced home, pushing the lead to 3-0. After a walk to Riggs, Manor left the bases loaded. Both teams managed one hit in the third inning and the Comets gained momentum when they turned a double play in the fourth. Megan Marks grounded to Green, at short, who dove for the stop

and then, before getting up, flipped the ball to Riggs at second who fired over to Regan Soboleski at first. Riggs stepped in to relieve starter Julie Bowmaster in the sixth and the Streaks rallied, scoring two runs on no hits to make things interesting. Riggs hit Annika Smith and Taylor Kittleman grounded to third, but the throw sailed over

Booth at second base. Township then scored on a wild pitch. “That was the first passed ball we’ve had this season that a runner scored,” recalled Stokes. “I went out at that point to talk to them said we’re still ahead one run with one out. Em you do what you do and everyone else just make the plays behind her.” See Sports pg 7

er, the Comets picked off Ragan Bliss when Riggs, playing second base, snuck in behind Bliss to take catcher Bailey’s throw. GV’s Anna Sidlowski had a no-hitter going into the fifth inning but that ended with Bailey’s first pitch double. Riggs followed with a RBI double and Paterson’s (1-2, 2 RBI) base hit put the Comets in front, 4-0. They left the bases loaded. Bowmaster started the sixth inning but after an error, Stokes brought in Riggs, who finished with six strikeouts. Bowmaster struck out three, walked one and gave up two hits, neither of which made it out of the infield. The Comets batted around plus one and put the game away in the sixth. Green and Bailey (2-4, 3 runs scored) reached on base hits and Riggs walked. Paterson’s bases loaded walk pushed in Green and called for a pitching change as Sidlowski was replaced by Kelly Cornog who forced Soboleski to popup for the first out of the inning. Amelia Trout, in her first varsity start, replacing a vacationing Maddie Mitchell, cleared the bags when she crushed a triple to left that rolled to the fence. She scored on Booth’s two-out base hit. “Amelia’s driving liner got past the outfielder and was the dagger,” said Stokes. “Their starting pitcher was probably the best we’ve seen this season. “This was another performance that has mirrored so many this year,” he added.

three, allowed two unearned runs and earned the save. “Julie is just unbelievable the way she goes about pitching,” said Stokes. “She faced 17 batters over five innings and threw 40 pitches. Those are just crazy off the chart stats. “I just can’t be prouder of this group,” he added. “And to win the school’s first district title, they should be proud of that.” Four days later, back on their home field at Manor Middle School, the Comets advanced to the quarterfinals of the PIAA Class 6A state tournament when they broke open a close game against Garnet Valley, winning convincingly 9-0. The Comets scored two in the first inning. Green opened with a walk and scored when Bailey grounded to third. The throw was high, leaving Green to advance from third. Two pitches later, Bailey, who advanced to third on the overthrow, scored on a passed ball. “That’s the luck you sometimes need to win,” said Stokes. “Jordan was supposed to put down a bunt but wound up with that grounder to third that gets thrown away. If she gets the bunt down, we might not score at all. That set the tone.” The Comets did not get going again until the fifth but defensively denied GV, also in the fifth when Ream made a running shoestring catch of a drive by Madde Mendoza and doubled up Elisabeth O’Connor when she fired to Soboleski on first.
