Riding to remember

Camp Acorn Acres will return for second year

Camp Acorn Acres will return to Freedom Memorial Park, 9 Shertzer Lane, Millersville, on Saturdays, June 17, July 15, Aug. 5 and Aug. 26, from 2 to 4 p.m. The series will include a variety of educational activities and snacks for kids age 4 and older, and it will incorporate lessons from elementary educators Annie Weaver from Octorara Area School District and Hillary Buckwalter from Hempfield School District.

Each day in the program will focus on a different topic. On June 17, participants will learn about owl pellets and why they’re necessary for some birds to make. Students will have an opportunity to dissect an owl pellet to discern what its owner might have eaten.

InJanuary 2021, Bill and Julia Trout of Willow Street lost their son Daulton to suicide. Like the rest of his family, Daulton was an avid motorcycle rider, so Bill and Julia decided to begin a tradition that would both honor his memory and spread a message of hope to those who struggle with mental health issues. In June 2021, on the weekend of what would have been Daulton’s 23rd birthday, the first Daulton Trout Memorial Motorcycle Ride was held.

This year, the third annual memorial ride will begin on Saturday, June 17, at the Hoffman Building at the Solanco Fairgrounds on South Lime Street, Quarryville. Registration will begin at 9 a.m., followed by a safety meeting at 10:15 a.m., with kickstands up at 10:30 a.m. There will be a set cost per bike

which will include a passenger, and a waiver must be signed during registration to participate in the ride.

Those who do not wish to participate in the ride are invited to join the motorcyclists for lunch and a silent auction at the Hoffman Building when they return. Pulled pork sandwiches, chips, cookies, iced tea and lemonade will be available to be purchased.

In the previous two years, the group of riders rode on Route 272 from the Buck to Willow Street before driving back to the Solanco Fairgrounds on back roads. This year, the route has been changed to include multiple towns in the Southern End, such as Quarryville, New Providence, Willow Street, Lampeter Strasburg and Georgetown. “We realized that no one sees the message when we’re on back roads,” Bill said. “Our point is to get the message out about suicide prevention.”

Every year, the Trout family partners with nonprofit organizations like the DES Foundation and Mental Health America (MHA) of Lancaster County. The DES Foundation provides counseling and covers burial expenses for families affected by suicide. Since the first ride in 2021, Bill and Julia have raised over $29,000 for both organizations.

“Our goal is to raise enough awareness and enough money to save someone else from going through what we did,” Julia said. “If we can help one family not have to deal with this, it’s all worth it.”

Previously, Bill and Julia used part of the proceeds of the ride to fund the Daulton Trout Scholarship at Solanco High School, where Daulton graduated from. Since the scholarship is now well-funded, they have chosen to support the Building Bridges Foundation at Anderson Farm in Conestoga.

Building Bridges provides equine therapy services for veterans experiencing PTSD and their families.

The memorial ride has received a wave of support in its first two years; over 100 motorcycle riders participated each year in 2021 and 2022. Last year, MHA of Lancaster County sent a letter to Bill and Julia stating that it was able to hire new staff for research thanks to family’s donations. “That meant the world to us. It gave us the drive we needed for the next year,” Bill said.

For every ride, the Trout family tows a trailer with Daulton’s motorcycle on it. The bike was an incomplete project of his, and Bill and his other son, Tyler, finished it with the help of Daulton’s friends. “This way, it’s like we’re riding with Daulton,” Julia said.

For more information, search for “Daulton Trout Ride for Suicide Awareness” on Facebook.

On July 15, Weaver and Buckwalterwill discuss trees and forests, including the creatures that call them home. “There’s a whole lot going on up there,” said Betsy Shank, founder of Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation and creator of the program. “Everyone just thinks about squirrels and birds, but what about bats and bugs?” The children will also learn about what kinds of products can be made from trees, such as paper and plastics. The crafts and activities will teach kids about how trees clean the air and will cover basic information and more specific trivia relating to forests.

On Aug. 5, students will learn about worms, and will discover the answer to a question that Shank has been wondering her whole life: Which end of a worm is the head? Weaver and Buckwalter will also discuss worms’ habitat, diet and other characteristics.

June designated as Real Estate Planning Month

Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices recently announced June as Real Estate Planning Month and, in partnership with the national brand Homesale Realty, has dedicated itself to arming agents with the tools, resources and education necessary to help their clients turn their real estate dreams into real estate plans.

The company’s agents are

equipped to help community members set actionable goals, make viable road maps and develop a lifestyle plan that assists them in achieving their goals - from buying, selling and investing to making improvements and more. People are encouraged to contact an agent today to get started on their personalized real estate plan.

Berkshire Hathaway Homesale Realty has more than 30 offices serving Maryland and Pennsylvania, including a home office in Lancaster at 215 S. Centerville Road.

The title of the final day of the program is “Backbone Bonanza,” and activities will cover a plethora of information on vertebrates. While they look at everything from squirrels to fish, participants will learn how to determine if an animal is a vertebrate.

Shank created Camp Acorn Acres last year after receiving multiple requests from the community to involve children at Acorn Acres. Although Shank can’t allow kids to volunteer at the rehab center for liability reasons, she wanted to create a camp specifically designed for kids. This way, youngsters could still learn about nature, investigate wildlife and foster an interest in the environment.

Shank decided that Weaver would be a perfect instructor for the camp, as she is not only an educator, but also an Envirothon coach. “Kids should understand these topics. This is about their future,” said Shank. “We also want to do it

in a fun way and get kids outside of the house. And who doesn’t want to know which end is the head of a worm?”

To register for the camp, visit https://tinyurl .com/campacornacres. There is a set cost per participant.

RRR to host Summer Field Day

“This is the open house of our hobby,” said Alex Van Patten, public information officer with Red Rose Repeater Association (RRR), a local organization that will participate in the national Amateur Radio Field Day. “It’s our chance to show people who have no or limited exposure to this hobby what it’s all about,” stated Van Patten.

This year’s event, known to RRR members as “Summer Field Day,” will take place on Saturday and Sunday, June 24 and 25, at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, 750 E. King St., Lancaster. This event is open to the public, and the club particularly recommends stopping by on Saturday between 2 and 8 p.m. The event will close by 2 p.m. on Sunday.

RRR president Ralph Hess noted that antennae setup will be held on Saturday between 8 and 9 a.m. “There are a lot of new hams who want to see that,” said Hess. “Ham” is another term for amateur radio. The hobby invites interested persons to experiment with electronics and communications techniques. Hams also provide a

free public service to communities during a disaster or emergency - all without needing a cellphone or the internet.

“Thaddeus Stevens is a perfect spot (to hold field day),” noted Van Patten. “People will have their radio stations set up, and the focus is to contact other clubs across the country doing the same thing. We hope to talk to a couple hundred (individuals) or more.”

This is the 90th year hams have used field day to demonstrate radio’s ability to create reliable communications independent of commercial networks from almost anywhere. Since 1933, amateur radio operators across North America have established temporary radio stations in

public locations during field day to showcase the science and skill of amateur radio.

Van Patten pointed out that in addition to contacting other clubs in the U.S., attempts will be made to contact clubs in other countries and even hams in outer space. “We also hope to utilize the space station,” he said, noting that there is a radio aboard and that amateurs are encouraged to use the facility as a relay point. “Last year, an astronaut was participating in field day from the space station,” he added. Although RRR was not able to make contact, many clubs did. “(The astronaut) was very busy handing out contacts the whole weekend nonstop,” said Van Patten. “The equipment to do that is very basic,” he added. “For less

than $30, you can build an antenna to contact the space station.”

In 2019, more than 35,000 people from thousands of locations participated in field day. “Last year, (there were even) more because the hobby is growing every year,” said Van Patten. “(There are) more than 770,000 hams (nationwide) now, and there are 28,000 in Pennsylvania alone.” Hess noted that hams range in age from as young as 7 to 102. “The hobby has changed in the last five years and really (become) attainable for a number of people,” said Van Patten. “The entry point to get involved and have a radio is less than $50.” For more information about field day or amateur radio, visit www.w3rrr.org or visit www.arrl.org.

At Lancaster Science Factory, kids experiment in fun

More than some complex theory or fancy equation, science is a living, breathing application that helps us understand the world around us and how all of its moving parts interact.

At 454 New Holland Ave., Lancaster, science is manfactured, produced, nurtured. But it is also prodded, played with and learned.

This haven for experimentation is called the Lancaster Science Factory.

Housed in a repurposed industrial building, the Lancaster Science Factory is an interactive, hands-on center designed to spark an interest in science for children from prekindergarten through eighth grade and their families.

“Science is everything. It’s everywhere,” said Amanda Bakay, Lancaster Science Factory’s director of programs and communications. “It is the stuff that makes the world work. It’s about being curious and asking questions about the world around you. That’s

what we’re doing here - letting kids discover science.”

The Lancaster Science Factory is 17,000 square feet of 65 engaging exhibits that fall into the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) category. Those exhibits specifically target areas of mechanics and motion, structural engineering, fluid dynamics, light and vision, acoustics, electricity, math and robotics and sustainable energy, just to name a few.

The main exhibit hall is supported outside by a 4,000square-foot, three-season courtyard.

But the Lancaster Science Factory also hosts classes, workshops, after-school programs, summer camps and social events.

“We actively seek to make our programs accessible to everyone,” said Bakay. “The hook is that everything’s

hands-on. I love seeing kids being super curious. It’s a really cool space, and the secret is that all of the stuff is fun for adults as well.”

In 2022, the Lancaster Science Factory hosted 50,000 guests, and Bakay estimated that number will rise to 60,000 this year. She also said that about a third of those visitors can be attributed to tourism, a third have resulted from school field trips and a third were local residents.

Lancaster Science Factory’s work is funded through admission fees, retail sales from its gift shop and donations from individuals and foundations. The museum staff is made up of 10 fulltime employees.

“We’ve been working hard to build the brand of the Lancaster Science Factory and make it a place to come,” said Bakay. “It’s truly a place for

the community. It’s an asset for the community to take advantage of. It’s a resource.”

Through the inspiration of founder and former local advertising executive Jim Bunting, the Lancaster Science Factory opened in 2008. The opening was financed through a $1 million capital campaign and supported by the work of volunteers. In 2019, the museum doubled the size of its exhibition hall.

“We’re still relatively young,” said Bakay. “When he was a kid, our founder, Jim Bunting, wished he had a place like this to help him learn. Over the years, our programming has grown a lot. We’ve added programs because that’s the demand we’ve been seeing.”

Parade of Homes to offer in-person and virtual touring

The Building Industry Association of Lancaster County (BIA) has announced the annual virtual and inperson Parade of Homes, beginning on Saturday, June 17.

Sponsored by Fulton Bank and UGI Utilities and presented by the BIA, the Lancaster/Lebanon Parade of Homes is a free public event that opens new homes for touring both in person and virtually. This year’s Parade features 20 singlefamily homes and townhome/duplexes from 12 builders, ranging in price from $369,990 to $1 million. Community members may visit 19 of the 20 homes in person and all of the

homes virtually utilizing 3D technology, which provides a room-by-room view of each home.

New this year, the BIA is holding a giveaway drawing for the chance to win money toward a renovation or toward the purchase of a newly constructed home, completed by a BIA member. For complete details, visit www.lancasterbuilders.org.

The website also includes a downloadable ticket request form. Per Pennsylvania law, tickets must be purchased with cash or a check. Tickets will also be available at some stops on the Parade of Homes tour; check www.lancasterbuilders.org for details.

Detailed information on all of the home entries is available at www.lancaster paradeofhomes.com.

The Parade of Homes App is an additional feature. This is a tool for home details, directions, and customizable routes. Readers may search for “BIA Parade of Homes” in their app store, download the free app, and select the Lancaster/Lebanon Parade of Homes. Parade of Homes Guidebooks with the same information are available at the BIA office, 204 Butler Ave., Lancaster, and Fulton Bank branches, and copies of the book were mailed to over 100,000 Lancaster and Lebanon County households. The Parade homes are

judged by a panel of building and industry experts, with awards presented at the annual Parade of Homes Gala; this year’s event will take place on Friday, June 16. Homes are classified into divisions by price and judged with other homes in the same price division using a numerical scoring system, with awards for Best of Show, Kitchen, Bath, Interior Design, Exterior, Decorated, and Landscaping. The top-scoring single-family and townhome/duplex homes each receive the Fulton Bank Award, the highest honor in local homebuilding. Winners will be published on the Parade of Homes website beginning on June 17.

When there’s much work to be done, it can be overwhelming, and it’s sometimes easy to lose sight of the work that has already been performed. That’s why it’s important to periodically take a step back, take stock and celebrate progress.

Hope. Inspire. Love. is celebrating seven years of battling human trafficking and sexual exploitation. But in no way does that mean that the faith-centered nonprofit is satisfied or that its mission is complete.

On Saturday, June 24, at the Lancaster Country Club, 1466 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, Hope. Inspire. Love. will present its inaugural Hope for Freedom Gala. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and the gala program will commence at 6 p.m.

While the festive atmosphere promises to assure attendees a good time, the Hope for Freedom Gala will also serve as an educational tool for Hope. Inspire.

Love.’s mission and the depth of the human trafficking problem locally.

“It’s a fundraiser to share and celebrate the work that’s already been done,” said Amy Thurston, CEO and president of Hope. Inspire. Love. “People in our community have heard about our work, and they’re supporting the mission. Local businesses see the work we’re doing, and they want to get behind it. It makes this event more special.”

The Hope for Freedom Gala will feature hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction, live music, a spoken word performance and a live painting of an artist’s interpretation of hope, as well as dinner. Thurston said that over 100 supporters have already registered for the event and that Hope. Inspire. Love. is hoping for another 100 attendees.

The goal is to raise $35,000 in donations to provide trauma-informed mentorship to survivors of sex trafficking, prevention

and education initiatives and outreach and awareness events.

“Human trafficking is the business of stealing freedom for profit,” said Thurston. “There’s labor trafficking and sex trafficking. It involves deceptions and lies and physical violence. It’s that control and manipulation piece.”

Thurston said that human trafficking is the second largest criminal industry in the United States and that it generates an estimated $150.2 billion annually. She also said Pennsylvania reported the 15th-most human trafficking cases among states in the country last year.

“It’s a larger problem than people realize,” said Thurston. “Lancaster has one of the highest rates of reported trafficking. We don’t know the signs and what this thing looks like. It affects more women than men, and a lot of women don’t self-identify because they don’t realize what it is.”

Founded in 2017, Hope.

Inspire. Love. combats human trafficking and sexual exploitation through awareness, preventative education and mentorship.

In addition to Lancaster County, Hope. Inspire. Love. operates in Philadelphia, Norristown, Reading, York and Lebanon.

“Our organization exists because of a train ride to Philadelphia,” said Thurston. “My husband, (Steve), saw a younger woman with an older man. As he began to observe them, he could tell it wasn’t a father-daughter relationship. When he looked into her eyes, he saw her darkness. The gentleman saw (him watching), grabbed her and took her off the train. My husband froze and didn’t do anything.”

“But when he came home and told me what he saw, he said he couldn’t do nothing,” continued Thurston. “William Wilberforce said, ‘You can choose to look the other way, but never again can you say that you never knew.’”

Trail application available for Apple devices

The Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) has announced that the Susquehanna NHA app is now available on the App Store for IOS users. Created through a partnership with Franklin & Marshall College computer science course students in 2021, the app was first made available through Google Play under the name Susquehanna NHA Trails.

AUCTION FOR: WILLIAM BRUNKE & VANESSA

The app is part of SNHA’s ongoing mission to connect visitors to the outdoor recreation amenities along the Susquehanna River. In the app, trail access areas, park-

ing information, restroom facilities, and heritage sites are listed individually for major regional trails and nature preserves. The app also allows Susquehanna NHA to send notifications about trail updates or construction. Users can also check to see if the James D. Warner Passageway under the Shock’s Mill Bridge on the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail is flooded. This waterfront passageway floods during spring freshets and on occasion in the summer. There is no available trail detour, so it is

helpful for users to check before hitting the trail.

The application has event and contact information for Susquehanna NHA to better connect its community to riverfront initiatives. Another feature of the app allows users to submit trail maintenance requests. Trail users can submit the trail name, the mile marker, and a photo of the issue. This interactive component is designed to help trail managers keep local trails clear and accessible.

For links directly to the apps on the App Store and

Google Play, visit www.susqnha.org and click Maps & Guides.

The SNHA connects the people and communities of Lancaster and York counties to one another and to the nation through stories about the area. The organization aims to welcome visitors, cultivate partnerships, and nurture a strong regional identity.

For more details, contact Megan Salvatore, Columbia Crossing visitor service representative, at msalvatore@susqnha.org or 717-449-5607.

Lancaster County Women for Good is committed to supporting nonprofit organizations that serve the local community.

Members nominated Aaron’s Acres, Second Grace Inc., and Arch Street Center as the three nonprofit finalists. Representatives from each organization gave a short presentation to the

group, followed by a questionand-answer time. Members voted on which of the finalists would receive the $5,500 grant at the end of the event.

The grant recipient, Aaron’s Acres, serves children and young adults with disabilities by providing them with opportunities to participate in innovative and unique social and recreational programs in an atmosphere of acceptance that embraces the child and family.

Among Aaron’s Acres’ programs is a summer camp program for people ages 5 to 21.

lective giving group with a focus on the Lancaster County region, Lancaster County Women for Good seeks to help local women build connections and enrich their professional and personal lives while doing good for the greater community. JLL recognizes youth volunteers

The Junior League of Lancaster (JLL) has announced the two winners of this year’s 2023 Deborah P. Altman Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award: Lauren Leister, an 18-year-old graduating senior from Warwick High School, and Caleb Miller, an 18-year-old graduating senior from Donegal High School. Leister and Miller each received a $1,500 scholarship prize, of which a $300 contribution will be donated by JLL to a charity of each student’s choice. Leister’s chosen charity is Four Diamonds, and Miller selected the Old Line Youth Livestock Foundation.

Leister’s commitment to volunteerism has been illustrated throughout her high school career. She participated in and served as the chairperson of UNITE for Mini-THON Club. Leister has been an active member of the Lititz Leo Club, and she was also appointed to the National Honor Society (NHS), where she was elected as secretary and was involved in fundraisers for local nonprofit organizations.

Miller’s scholastic accomplishments have included his

induction into the NHS, National Math Honor Society, and Key Club. He has also been involved in 4-H, undertaking a project to install cattle gates at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds. He has been a fiveyear volunteer with the Marietta Fireworks Team. Named a member of the Pennsylvania Farm Show Junior Committee, Miller was recently selected as one of 12 youths from Pennsylvania to assist with ensuring the success of the Farm Show.

The annual award is named in honor of Deborah P. Altman, a past president of the Junior League of Lancaster, whose life

exemplified a commitment to volunteering, a love of children, and service to the community. The purpose of the award is to recognize young people who demonstrate an exceptional interest and involvement in volunteerism as well as inspiring their peers to volunteer in their communities. Since the award was established in 1984, more than $48,800 has been awarded to outstanding youths in Lancaster County.
