Penn Manor Graduates Seized Their Opportunities

Challenges accepted and answered.

Penn Manor High School seniors received their diplomas during graduation on June 4 at Franklin & Marshall College.

Valedictorian Jordan Chen, salutatorian Tyler Hudson, and Katie Eberts, who was ranked third in the class, shared the spotlight. Hailey Frey, who is involved with a variety of school activities including Mini-THON, was given the honor of opening the ceremony.

“I’m very proud of the four of these students, but I’m also proud of their 450 classmates,” Penn Manor principal Douglas Eby said. “We have challenged them to seize the opportunities Penn Manor offers. We have challenged them to be all in on everything that they do and make the most of these opportunities. And they have done that. They have represented Penn Manor well in the community, with their extracurricular activities, and in the classroom setting. We’re very proud of them.”

Jordan described his keys to success. “You’ve just got to put in the hard work over all four years, excel in academics, and be really involved in school activities,” he said. “I’m really honored to speak for my graduating class. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

Jordan will attend Harvard University in the fall and concentrate in neuroscience on a premed track. He wants to become a doctor, but he has not decided on

a specialty. He looks back fondly on his time at Penn Manor. “I’ve met all sorts of people, and we have great teachers,” said Jordan.

An all-state pianist, Jordan said many of his school highlights came in the music department.

“We had two concerts every year, and it was always exciting to see the community come out to support us,” he said. He also enjoyed being a member of the tennis team because it provided a break

from academics and a chance to bond with teammates.

One of his favorite memories is the homecoming skits last fall.

“Our pep rallies are always loud, of course, but they’re pretty nice to end the day because everyone loves having less class,” he said.

Tyler, who will study math at Franklin & Marshall, appreciated his time on the soccer and track and field teams. “I loved the bus rides with the team and

Grateful for the support shown by the community, Millersville-Manor VFW Post 7294 is excited to give back by providing a fun, family-friendly event.

Good is universal, timeless and objective. Because it mirrors God, good is good.

The Lancaster County Women for Good (LCWG) group knows some things about the concept of doing good. It’s part of the all-volunteer organization’s mission, purpose and reason for existing.

“We use that word a lot, ‘good,’” said Anna Horst, the chairperson of the five-member board that oversees LCWG’s

operations. “It’s in our name. I think it’s safe to say our connections and providing nonprofits with resources is part of the good we aim to do. I think there are a number of nonprofits in Lancaster County who have amazing missions. They’re real people trying to help real people. They are problems that a majority of us would agree need to be solved. Maybe we need to be more clear by what we mean by ‘good.’”

will be a fireworks show Friday, June 20, at 9 p.m. The fireworks will be postponed until Saturday if the weather is bad on Friday. The carnival will be held rain or shine and will only be canceled if there is lightning.

Tickets are on sale at the VFW

or by going to www.vfwpost7294 .org. Anyone who purchases tickets prior to June 18 will receive a discounted price.

Tons of Funs Shows will provide rides such as a Ferris wheel, Vortex, and Zipper; games, including balloon bust, water race, and mini

basketball shot; and carnival staples like cotton candy, funnel cake, french fries, and lemonade.

Food trucks will also be on hand throughout the carnival. TacoRV, Raggamuffin Kitchen, Ph’usion Mobile Cuisine, and Funcky Candy X-Press will sell food on June 18. Thursday, June 19, will be VFW Food Night, and all proceeds will support veterans and community events. On June 20, Tanks Taters, Ezzy Eats, and Rollin’ Phatties BBQ Smokeshack will have food for sale. HotBox BBQ and Latin Touch will sell food on June 21.

There will also be a dunk tank from 6 to 9 p.m. each night. Post 7294 will provide live entertainment outdoors from 6 to 9 p.m. on June 20 and 21, with End of Days performing on Friday and The Attic Dwellers on Saturday.

The VFW’s auxiliary will be offering chances to win prize baskets and will hold bingo in the banquet hall.

June 18 will also be First Responders Night. Fire trucks and police departments will be there with their own booths with games and activities for kids.

Military Appreciation Night will be held on June 19 with representatives of the military branches hosting small games and activities for kids.

The Summer Carnival is the brainchild of Post 7294 quarter -

master Rick Brown. His daughter Jennie Prange helps organize the Solanco Football Boosters carnival in Quarryville. “They’ve been very successful, and I thought, ‘Why can’t we do that?’” Brown said. When a Millersville church stopped holding a carnival after COVID, Brown saw an opening. “I thought we’ve got a lot of area out here, and we could probably do one,” he said.

The inaugural Summer Carnival was held in mid-July last year and was met with rave reviews. “Everybody loved it,” Brown said.

The post decided to move it closer to the time the school year ends. “We’re really big on community here,” said McKayla Herman, who is the banquet manager for Post 7294. “We do a lot of events for the community. We’re really big on families, and we’re really big on kids. We want to see them out here having fun.”

Herman added that she enjoys seeing adults, including veterans, enjoying rides alongside children. “It’s cool to see the entire community - from toddlers to 60- and 70-year-olds - out there having a great time,” she said. “People are constantly thanking us for holding family-oriented activities, and we try to do things that everyone can come and enjoy.”

The carnival is not designed to be a fundraiser. “Our community is good about supporting us,” Herman said. “They see how much we do and give back to them, and they’re pretty good about showing up for us.”

Any organization or booster club that would like to set up a booth at the carnival can call Brown at 717-330-1649 or Herman at 717-693-3557.

The next Millersville senior luncheon will be held on Monday, June 23, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Millersville VFW, 219 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville. The per-person cost includes the meal, entertainment, and door prizes. Tickets for giveaway drawings will also be available for purchase. The featured performer will be Elvis impersonator Jeffrey Krick. Everyone over age 55 is welcome. Reservations are required by Monday, June 16, by calling Faye Siglin at 717-872-5811 or Vickie Dunk at 717-3305282. To cancel a reservation, call Siglin.

ience. We feel like the nonprofits of Lancaster County are already doing good work. We believe the people closest to the communities are best equipped to know the needs.”

Currently, LCWG’s active membership is made up of 96 women who work or live in Lancaster County. They hail from all parts of the county.

“We have a shared purpose to benefit others outside of our group,” said Horst, a resident of Lititz. “The mission is a unifying thing. The women of the group are generous and genuinely curious. It’s special to get together with a group of women and have purpose.”

LCWG provides one grant to a Lancaster County nonprofit in each quarter of the year. LCWG members nominate worthy nonprofits and a general vote of the membership determines three finalists. After the participating nonprofits make presentations about the merits of their missions, LCWG votes again to determine that quarter’s grant recipient.

“They are women who want to be part of something bigger than themselves,” said Horst. “They like that this is a very accessible way to volunteer in Lancaster County. It’s a way to connect with other like-minded women. They all want to see our community thriving and flourishing. We try to make an inclusive environment where everyone’s voices are heard. They all feel like they need to do something. (The grant) is a democratic process.”

“My favorite part is the

Typically, the grants range between $4,800 and $7,100. Since its inception in August of 2022, LCWG has awarded 10 grants to county nonprofits like SWAN (Scaling Walls a Note at a Time), Aevidum, Phoenix Assistance Dogs of Central Pennsylvania, Hope Inspire Love, Clare House, Arch Street Center, Aaron’s Acres, North Star Initiative and Power Packs Project, totaling $62,000.

“The only common thread with the grants is that they go to nonprofits serving the local Lancaster County area,” said Horst. “Their services have to directly impact Lancaster County. We’ve also provided awareness. I feel like we strengthen the fabric of Lancaster County by contributing to its resil-

the excitement of going to meets and games,” he said.

Katie will attend The College of Wooster in Ohio and major in neurobiology, with plans to become a trauma surgeon.

“There are a lot of impactful teachers here that I will remember for a long time,” Katie said, mentioning calculus teacher Eric Eshleman and chemistry teacher Jim McGlynn.

“Mr. McGlynn definitely taught me to work hard no matter what, and he showed me that hard work will

almost always pay off,” Katie said. “Mr. Eshleman, I definitely learned a lot of new things in his class.”

Hailey is planning to attend West Virginia University to study social work and psychology and become a social worker at a children’s hospital. She bonded with teacher Billie Jo Kramer, who is the Mini-THON adviser.

“She taught me so much about hard work and passion while working with Mini-THON,” said Hailey.

during a construction project.

“Perseverance is one word that would describe our four years here,” said Jordan. “We came right out of COVID into high school, and now here we are four years later, on the other side of it.”

Jordan referenced the “fountain of opportunities” available to Penn Manor students. He was not necessarily referring to an incident that occurred during his freshman year.

“We were sitting in the cafeteria, and a pipe near the bathroom just exploded,” he said. It was really fun. Everyone rushed over there and pulled out their phones to record it. What a day.”

Katie chimed in, “Some of the fountain of opportunities was on my lunch that day.”

connection with a diverse group of women,” she added. “But they all have this drive for working together for the community. I like seeing the impact. Pooling our resources, time and skills to benefit Lancaster County feels really good.”

LCWG was established in August of 2022 through an online social giving platform, Grapevine. LCWG has brought together dozens of Lancaster County women who were already looking for ways to give back.

“(Grapevine) reached out to start a group local to Lancaster County,” said Horst. “They sort of initiated the group, and the locals drove it from there. We have a good group of leaders who are committed to the cause. I think we’re becoming a more confident organization. The members can know what to expect.”

“The camaraderie is something special,” Horst continued. “A lot of the women enjoy the friendships they are making. A lot of these women are business owners, so we network and support each other.”

Program To Focus on Paul Revere

The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) will host a presentation titled “Court-Martial of Paul Revere” when it meets at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 14, in the Millersville Borough Administration & Police Building, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m.

The speaker will be Stephen J. Shaw, a retired military officer and teacher, published author, and world traveler who recently returned from Egypt. He will share the story of Paul Revere.

As an ordinary citizen living in turbulent times, Revere played key roles during the Colonial tax fight, in the Boston Massacre, with the Boston Tea Party, and in the Battle of Lexington & Concord. He was a better messenger than a soldier, according to Shaw, whose PowerPoint presentation will explore Revere’s family, home and business, and little-known
