Penn Manor

Since January, Elizabeth Raff has been speaking at conferences and events across the country to advocate for teachers and to highlight the importance of education everywhere. Raff, who works as Penn Manor School District’s elementary learning facilitator, was selected as Pennsylvania’s Teacher of the Year for 2022-23.
Raff’s journey to become the state’s Teacher of the Year began with being nominated for the award in 2021, followed by an extensive application process. During this time, Raff completed phone interviews, filmed lessons and wrote essays to display her skills as a teacher. “It was the best professional development I’ve ever received,” Raff said. “It really allowed me to reflect on my craft and become a better teacher.”
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDAtthe end of April, students from Penn Manor High School’s nutrition and food sciences and plant science classes joined forces to complete a handson learning project. The students worked together to harvest produce that was grown in the greenhouse on campus and used the vegetables to prepare a meal to share together.
Mary Wurzbach’s plant science class started the project during the spring semester by planting a variety of herbs and vegetables. Instead of the traditional planting method, the students used hydroponics, which employs a water-based solution of nutrients as opposed to soil during the growing process.
Mindy Rottmund’s nutrition and food science class visited the greenhouse to learn about various hydroponic growing methods. Wurzbach offered an educational presentation and discussed the pros and cons of farmland growing and hydroponics. After the presentation, the group of students harvested the vegetables and returned to Rottmund’s classroom to spend the next two days of classes preparing the food.
The yield from the greenhouse included lettuce and herbs such as basil, which the students used to prepare a basil garlic aioli spread.
Rottmund brought in chicken, peppers and onions to sauté for the meal, and the lettuce was used to make lettuce wraps. The students from the plant science class learned about
various cooking techniques as they assisted in Rottmund’s classroom.
“My students knew nothing about hydroponics for the most part, and it was a nice way to lead into my fruit and veggie unit,” Rottmund said. “It was also nice to introduce the plant science students to my classroom. Both groups of kids were exposed to each other’s curriculum; it was a win-win situation.”
Rottmund had the idea for a partnership between the two classes several years ago and wrote a grant for the project. For the first year of the collaboration, students used produce from the greenhouse to make paninis and salads. Although Rottmund will retire this year, she hopes that the Family and
Consumer Sciences (FCS) department and the Agriculture department continue the partnership for years to come.
In addition to the partnership with the Agriculture department, Rottmund has previously collaborated with other classes to combine FCS learning material with other subjects. Rottmund has teamed up with history classes for a Colonial cooking unit, partnered with the Foreign Language department for a global food course and worked with students in the life skills class to make meals for children.
“The students are always very receptive to the projects,” Rottmund said. “We’ve been really pleased with the learning process in both areas.”
At the end of the application process, Raff was selected from 12 finalists to represent Pennsylvania in a cohort of all states’ and territories’ award recipients. As the state’s representative, Raff committed to two years of service: one year to advocate at the local level and one year on the national stage. Her duties have included speaking at workshops for educators and traveling around the country with her fellow teachers as they have worked to encourage support for the country’s schools.
In February 2023, Raff and her group of teachers visited the headquarters of Google in California, where they discussed how to use technology to benefit students in the classroom. In April, the education advocates traveled to Washington, D.C., for the 2023 National and State Teachers of the Year Celebration at the White House. Raff and her cohort met with several legislators to elicit See Teacher of the Year pg 3

support for classrooms around the country and spoke with first lady Jill Biden and Education Secretary Miguel Cardona. They discussed the issues that schools are facing today and considered solutions to many of the challenges experienced by teachers. The teachers also participated in an international summit on teaching that was attended by chancellors of education from around the world. The week concluded with a ceremony in the White House’s rose garden and a discussion with President Joe Biden.
In July, Raff and the other
teachers will visit NASA’s space camp in Huntsville, Ala., and they will visit Princeton, N.J., in the fall to advocate for educationfriendly policies. Raff’s duties as Pennsylvania’s Teacher of the Year will conclude in January 2024 with a visit to the NCAA Division I football championship.
“When we elevate teachers, we elevate students and learning. It’s important to highlight the incredible work that teachers do every day and recognize that they make a difference,” Raff said.
Throughout her time as an advocate, Raff has continued
to work as an elementary learning facilitator for Penn Manor School District. In this recently created position, Raff provides guidance for teachers by giving them feedback on material, offering model lessons in classrooms and assisting with strategies for educating students. Raff worked as a sixth-grade teacher at Pequea Elementary
School for nine years before filling her current role.
“I’m excited to bring back what I’ve gleaned from my experience this year and to directly support the learning of educators in Penn Manor,” Raff said. “I’m also just grateful to be able to represent all of our great teachers; I have a lot of wonderful colleagues who could easily have been in my shoes.”

When sports seasons get underway, everyone’s goal is to reach the playoffs. It’s only when that goal becomes reality that teams start to realize their season may end with a loss. After all, there is only one champion. The Penn Manor lacrosse teams reached that playoff goal and experienced that season ending loss last Thursday as part of a double-header in Neffsville against top seeds Manheim Township.
After opening the District Three playoffs with an overtime thriller over State Col-
lege, the Comet boys went up against the undefeated Blue Streaks in the second game of that double header.
It was the third time this season the two teams met and the third time the Comets fell short. This time, however, it was their best showing. The boys lost 18-6 and 21-6 during the regular Section One schedule. Thursday night, in the District 3 quarterfinals, the Streaks finished on top, 21-11.
The ninth seeded Comets (13-7) fell behind 6-2 in the first quarter but scored the first two goals of the second, closing the gap to 6-4. Town-
ship scored four straight and led 10-4 at the break.
“I felt like we battled,” said head coach Connor Rowe.
“We went on some runs but unfortunately, they went on some bigger runs. We never backed down once and never let up.”
Manor opened the third quarter with another two quick goals but again the Streaks rallied, outscoring the visitors 4-1 through the rest of the quarter and then taking control with a 7-4 fourth quarter advantage.
Adam Hollinger, who scored the overtime gamewinner, matched Township’s Jake Laubach with five goals. Benedict Flinchbaugh, who led the team in scoring this season with 46 goals and 19 assists, added a hat trick with one assist. Eli Warfel scored twice, and Aidan Gerlach chipped in with two assists.
For their efforts this season, Flinchbaugh was a Section One first team attack player, Warfel was first team midfield, Kyle Schmidtke was first team defense and Nick Hollinger was first team goalie. Coach Rowe and MT coach Dan Lyons were coCoaches of the Year. Second team players included Grant Bradburn (attack), Jack Warfel (short stick defensive midfielder), and Mike Evans (defense). Hollinger and Evans are both Jim Fiora Class Act Award Academic AllStars as well.
“We return the majority of our roster, and these experiences will help pave the way in the off season,” said Rowe. “We had a small class of seniors, but they left their mark on this program and their leadership made our jobs easy as coaches.
“This is the third year in a row that our team won a district playoff game,” he added. “The expectations to be playing late into May are certainly all over the locker room.
“Our youth program has exploded over the last five years and our JV team had a record-breaking season going 12-2. I’m exciting to see our guys take their success in lacrosse to some other sports teams at Penn Manor and watch them compete,” Rowe stated. “I love that the guys play multiple sports and watching them respond in those other sports. As PM legend Jeff Roth would say, “The Comets are rising. We will be back.”
The girls’ scenario was almost a mirror image. They defeated Dallastown in the opening round by scoring the last two goals of the game and then took on the Streaks for the third time this year. Township, coming off a L-L League championship victory, beat the Comets 22-2 and 141 during Section One play and advanced to the semifinals with a convincing 23-2 final. They are 13-1 to date. The No. 8 seed Comets finished the year at 14-6.
“Going in we knew we were the underdogs, but we put in our best effort as we knew it was a single elimination game,” said head coach Anneli Starry. “I think we improved each time we played them, and I am proud of that.”
After falling behind 2-1 early, the Comets gave up nine straight goals and never got back in the game. Ten different Streaks scored in the 23-2 victory. Township led 13-2 at the half and rallied for ten straight second half tallies.
Erin Shipley, a first team attack player, and Lillie Swanson scored for the Comets.
Mia Jones was honorable mention attack, Grace Gerner and Joelle Kroesen were second team midfield, Ciana
Suydam was second team defense and Brooklynn Ayala was second team goalie.
“All of our all-stars are leaders on and off the field,” said Starry. “Erin is also an academic all-star.
“Erin, Grace, Joelle, and Brooklynn lead in stats on the team in their respective positions. Erin and Joelle had the highest number of goals and assists. Grace led with draw controls, while Joelle led in ground balls and caused turnovers,” the coach continued. “Brooklynn ended with a 56% save percentage. Defense
is definitely a team effort, but Ciana was definitely our leader there and the reason our defense was successful. I cannot wait to see what she will accomplish next year.”
“We had five teams (baseball, softball, volleyball and boys’ and girls’ lacrosse) qualify for the post-season,” noted athletic director Pat Tocci. “It is a testament to the hard work and dedication that our coaches and student-athletes put into their programs. We hope to continue to build on this success as we move forward in the future.”

A special one-time, $3,000 scholarship, the Mary Roth Nursing Scholarship, was awarded to Vanessa Russo of Northern Lebanon High School. The scholarship was named in memory of Mary Roth, a longtime Lititz and Luther Acres resident who passed away in 2019 at age 95. Her sister, who is also a resident of Luther Acres, wanted to find a meaningful way to recognize what would have been Mary’s 100th birthday this year and chose to help fund the education of a future nurse by setting up the scholarship.
One-time, $1,000 scholarships were awarded to Kyra
Bixler of Garden Spot High School; Sydney Brubaker of Donegal High School; Isabel Harnish of Annville-Cleona High School; Sophia Lutz of Lancaster Country Day School; and Savannah Stauffer of Ephrata Senior High School.
The winners will continue their education and professional development at Clemson University, Lebanon County Career and Technology Center, Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences, Villanova University, and York College of Pennsylvania.
