Outdoor Farmers Market To Open In Millersville By Dayna M. Reidenouer
It has been five years since the borough of Millersville last saw a farmers market. That will change, however, on Saturday, June 15, when Manor Market will open on the campus of Immerse International, 321 Manor Ave., Millersville. The outdoor farmers market will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. once a month through October and is slated to feature produce, prepared foods, meats and cheeses, crafts, and live music. Immerse provides intensive English language education, housing for international students, and programs for refugees and immigrants to benefit the broader Lancaster community. “An event of this nature is in line with our mission to serve and to be a good neighbor to the borough and surrounding area of Millersville,” said executive director Ed McManness. He noted that
the corner of Manor and Leaman avenues, where Immerse International is located, has been designated as the town center for Millersville. “We came up with the idea (of Manor Market) when discussing the future development of the property and our desire to have a unique activity on the property to benefit the community,” he continued. “The barn and surrounding large mansion are a nice backdrop for an open-air market.” McManness noted that seven vendors are confirmed for June 15, with the hope of having a total of 10. Applications are still being accepted, and several are pending approval. Applications may be obtained by emailing info@immerseus.com. There is a cost to vend. Additional vendors have been confirmed for Saturday, July 13. Some of the vendors will participate in every market day, while others will be there only on select dates. See Farmers Market pg 9

The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) announced the winners of its 2019 Safety Training and Evaluation (STEP) Awards and recognized its 2019 OSHA Partners on May 1. Representatives from several member companies accepted their awards at the ABC Safety Awards Dinner. The anchor of ABC’s Safety Awards program is STEP, which provides companies a structured approach to benchmark and improve their safety efforts. The goal of the program is to provide an organized approach to analyze and further develop a company’s safety and loss prevention. Participating ABC member firms measure their safety processes and policies on 20 key components through a detailed questionnaire with the goal of implementing or enhancing safety programs that reduce jobsite incidence rates. The Pennsylvania Bankers Association (PA Bankers) recently awarded David Hostetter, executive vice president, director of governmental affairs at Fulton Financial Corporation, Lancaster, with the third annual William S. CAHS Features “Mineral Heritage” Exhibit Conestoga Area Historical Society (CAHS) has opened a new exhibit called “The Mineral Heritage of Our Area.” The exhibit features the Pequea Silver Mine and the magnetic iron ore mines. According to the historical society, the Native Americans extracted lead at the silver mine site but never discovered the smelting process. The 18th-century settlers were interested in the silver, and William Penn wanted to tax extracted silver. Many unsuccessful attempts to make the silver mine profitable have been made. The exhibit also discusses how magnetic iron ore was discovered in what is now
Conestoga and Martic townships in the 18th century. The Martic Forge Iron Furnace operated from 1751 to 1870. At Safe Harbor, there was an iron furnace and rolling mill. Its manager, John Griffin, invented a new kind of cannon, which was named for him and was used by the Union Army in the Civil War. The Pequea Magnetic Iron Company existed from 1881 to 1930. Transportation and fuel shortages contributed to the demise of the industry. CAHS is located in Ehrlich Park at 51 Kendig Road in Conestoga. Gromek began her career working with HIV/AIDS populations based in Nairobi, Kenya, and then, after completing a master’s degree in community health at Hofstra University, held various posts related to resettlement and health coordination,
The local charitable giving circle 100 Women Who Care Lancaster County (100WWC) will relaunch its organization with a celebratory evening at Tellus360, 24 E. King St., Lancaster, on Monday, June 10, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The event will serve as an opportunity to introduce new leadership, welcome members’ input and hear from special guests in the community, including Lancaster Mayor Danene Sorace. Lancaster’s 100 Women Who Care chapter was formed in 2015 and has since donated more than $138,000 to nonprofits of Lancaster County. The organization follows the national 100 Women Who Care model for membership and giving, in that women gather three times a year for a one-hour meeting, learn about local charities and donate a $100 check to a charity that the group selects. An end-of-year celebration is held each year, where recipients share the impact made by the group’s donations. The relaunch will serve as an opportunity for new and current members to
share their ideas for the organization’s future growth, as well as meet the new leaders who have joined the planning committee. The committee manages all aspects of the group’s charitable giving efforts. In addition to the evening’s idea and information exchange, guests will hear from three local leaders: Sorace, who will kick off the evening with a welcome, and nonprofit directors Will Kiefer of Bench Mark Program and Tricia Nabors of New Choices. Both Kiefer and Nabors were awarded donations from 100WWC after being invited to present at a quarterly meeting. Each will share how these funds impacted their organizations’ programming and mission. On Saturday, June 15, members of the Lancaster Throwback Juggling Club will host a free event to celebrate World Juggling Day. The 10th consecutive event will take place at Long’s Park on Harrisburg Pike in Lancaster from 1 to 4 p.m. on the lawn near the amphitheater, weather permitting. Signs and red balloons will direct attendees. Area residents are invited to stop by for free juggling lessons and to try out various circus skills. There is no fee to participate, and some juggling props will be available for use. A juggling workshop will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. and will teach the basic juggling pattern and some tricks for advanced learners. The worldwide event has been organized by the International Jugglers’ Association (IJA) in celebration of its founding in June 1947. “Our goal is to maximize attendance and, therefore, maximize the amount of money we can raise for hunger-fighting organizations in our community,” explained Jack Fliszar, FoodStock promotion and marketing coordinator. In the past five years, FoodStock has raised approximately $30,000. Fliszar noted that the event was created by Tom Hayden, who worked for the United States Postal Service and saw firsthand the success of the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Hayden wanted to do more, so he created FoodStock Music Festival, which provides funds for local food banks and pantries. “Food insecurity affects people and families from all age groups, and summer months are especially tough,” Fliszar said. He reported that according to www.feedingamerica.org, 1 in 8 people, including 1 in 6 children, struggle with hunger in Pennsylvania. “In Lancaster County, approximately 59,000 residents, including 1 in 5 children, go hungry on a regular basis,” Fliszar remarked. “Additionally, those depending on food pantries are coming from all walks of life,” he continued. “Looking at the bigger picture, food insecurity not only affects these individuals, it can have a negative impact on the entire community.” Following the festival, the FoodStock board of directors will determine where to disburse the proceeds so they do the most good. Past recipients have included the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, PowerPacks, the Manheim Central Food Pantry, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services, and Warwick Community Chest. FoodStock organizers are excited about the bands that will perform at the event. “We’ve got a great music lineup this year,” Hayden enthused. “Some of the area’s most talented musicians are coming together to help us fight hunger in our community. Straight out of Philly, Mo Lowda & The Humble recently returned from their European tour, and we’re excited to have them join us.” Mo Lowda & The Humble is the event’s headliner band. The group, which
is best known for its progressive songwriting and energetic live performances, is new to FoodStock, Fliszar said. The other bands on the event lineup have played at FoodStock at one time or another. Steel Radiance has been part of the event since the beginning, performing classic rock and blues. Hydroponic Philharmonic, a Grateful Dead tribute band, is back for its second year. Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra is also bringing its big band sound back for another year. Back In Motion, a horn-based band specializing in rock and soul music, is

2019 Craft & Vendor Fair Fundraiser
Music In The Orchard Series Planned Music in the Orchard will return to the 1719 Hans Herr House and Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street, for another summer highlighting local artists. Concerts will be held every other Saturday from June 8 through Aug. 3, beginning at 6 p.m. in the Herr House orchard. Tickets may be purchased on-site, and children under age 12 will be admitted free. No advance registration is required. Chairs are not provided. The Harrisburg Mandolin Ensemble will kick off the series on June 8. The mandolin quintet performs an eclectic blend of acoustic music including original tunes and arrangements of standards. It draws from a variety of genres including jazz, bluegrass, and swing. Folk-style performer Matt Miskie will open. The second concert in the series, on June 22, will feature Lancaster-based Denison Witmer. Witmer catalogs the experiences of young adulthood in honest detail through a laid-back, 1970s California pop production and guitar work. Singer-songwriter Matt Wheeler, also from Lancaster, will open the concert. July 6 will see The Jayplayers on the

McClain lends facets of soul, folk, jazz, and pop in her original music and unique covers. The Columbia-based duo SweetLife will open with modern hits, traditional standards, hymns, and its own songs. The series will conclude on Aug. 3 with a performance by Smokehouse 4, which will bring a mix of roots rock, blues, funk and some New Orleans soul. The noted Native American musician Terry Strongheart will open. Food and beverages will be available, including Herr House smoked sausage. Attendees are also welcome to bring a picnic dinner. On Thursday, June 13, Parachute Play will offer fun with a parachute plus silly songs and rhymes from 10 to 10:30 a.m. for children ages 1 to 3 and their caregivers. Smith’s Challenge was named for Bill Smith, who founded the Lancaster Road Runners Club more than 40 years ago. The men’s race was started to celebrate Father’s Day. “It is an intense trail race which varied in length throughout the years of running. It was and still is intended for men only to celebrate Father’s Day,” said race director Tim Good. “Ten years after the inception of the men’s race came ‘Mrs. Smith’s,’ a women-only race on Mother’s Day. Five years ago, I took over directing these races and combined them. I selected Father’s Day to run them to maintain the ‘men-only’ continuity.” Both races will start at the same time. Runners will line up to face each other 100 feet from the starting line. After the starting pistol is fired, the two groups will run through each other and follow their respective routes to the top of a hill, where they will begin running together before splitting at Golf Road. That pattern will continue, with several course diversions before the two groups join up one final time and finish together. Smith’s Challenge will be held rain or shine. Snacks and beverages will be provided to registered finishers. Club hats will be available to commemorate the event. Runners must be at least 10 years old to enter. There is a cost to participate, with a reduced rate offered to those who

Devin Groff, roadmaster for Lancaster Township, recently graduated from the PSATS Municipal Government Academy (PMGA), a leadership and municipal education program of the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors (PSATS). The 2019 class of PMGA graduates received diplomas and certificates of completion on April 15 during the township association’s annual Educational Conference in Hershey. According to PSATS executive director David Sanko, PSATS structured the academy to give participants practical information they can use in their positions. Greenway Photo Contest Posted The eighth annual Susquehanna Greenway Photo Contest is officially open. The contest is free to enter and open to people of all ages and skill sets. Photos must be taken within the Susquehanna Greenway Corridor. Cash prizes will be awarded to the first- through thirdplace winners within each category. Winning images will also be printed, framed, and added to a traveling gallery to be exhibited throughout the Susquehanna region within Pennsylvania.
The categories include landscapes, river towns, Susquehanna adventures, and bridges. The contest will closes at 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 30. Judging will take place in July, with winners announced by Sunday, Sept. 1. Photographs must be in digital format. All digital entries should be submitted in the highest resolution possible, and a minimum
of 1 megabyte (MB) in size. To enter, readers may visit www.susquehannagreenway.org/ photocontest. Participants must complete an online entry form with the required information and attach their digital photograph. Multiple photos may be submitted. Entrants under age 18 must submit a signed Parent Permission Form to validate their entry.

Those recognized were (from left) Dave Evans, Don Tribit, Howard Hill, George Keebler, Peggy Keebler, George Kern, and Mike Wagner. The presidents’ contributions to the Lancaster community include helping with building the fire escape training trailer and building a roadside park at the Tourist Information Center, holding teen driving rodeos and bike rodeos, assisting with safety measures at a local railroad attraction, conducting highway cleanups, and engaging in many other projects. TPA is a community service and safety-minded association stressing “As You Drive Watch That Child.”
