Penn Manor Students Receive Honor For Designs

Heritage Center Sets Open House The Blue Rock Heritage Center, 2251 River Road, Washington Boro, will host its annual open house event on Sunday, June 5, from 1 to 4 p.m. Special activities and exhibits are planned for the day. Admission is free. A new display featuring items from the former one-room schoolhouses in Washington Boro will be exhibited. These items, donated by the late Glenn Henry, include the schoolmaster’s desk and chair, books, photos, an umbrella stand, See Open House pg 3

Servant Stage, a nonprofit theater serving Lancaster County, will produce “Newsies.” The Tony-award winning Disney musical, based on the 1992 motion picture, was inspired by a true story. The show features a score by Alan Menken, dancing, and a focus on the message to fight for what is right. Producers have gathered a cast of more than 40 local performers, working with a 10-piece orchestra, in an energetic and family-friendly show that audience members of all ages may enjoy.

As part of their award, Penn Manor High School received $500 for traffic safety education. Kate’s billboard will remain along Columbia Avenue through Sunday, June 5. For her efforts, she received a $100 prize, and the high school received $1,000 for traffic safety education efforts. The “No Excuses Youth Traffic Safety” contest was open to students in Lancaster, Lebanon, Adams and York counties. It was sponsored by the Center for Traffic Safety and a Community Safety Grant from State Farm. Kate, Kyle and Travis created their designs under the guidance of Jenn Forney, a physical education and health teacher at Penn Manor High School.

Kate’s design includes a bright, stylized image of an iris, with the message “Keep your eyes on the road” running across the frame. The image is taken from a photograph of Kate’s eye.
