CAHS curator brings art background to time-consuming task
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
Conestoga Area Historical Society Museum curator
Ken Hoak puts the “art” in artifact.
Hoak has been tasked with arranging the displays and exhibits since the museum was
founded in 1990.
A former art teacher and department chair at Solanco High School and adjunct professor at Millersville University and Elizabethtown College, Hoak brings unique experiences to the position.
“It takes someone who can
take objects and figure out how they can be displayed to the best advantage,” he said.
It also requires a great deal of dedication. “Since I retired (in 1993), it has taken up almost all of my time,” said Hoak, who is 90 years old.

Penn Manor High School’s combined drone/land robotics team composed of Wyatt Clare, Ben Thomas, and Mushna Subba finished first in both the air and the combined air/land competition in the Sea, Air, and Land (SEAL) Challenge regional, which was held at Millersville University on April 22.

The Lancaster County Housing and Redevelopment Authority (LCHRA) is requesting the public’s assistance to help the organization best serve people experiencing housing insecurity.
As the lead agency of the Lancaster County Homelessness Coalition (LCHC), the LCHRA held a virtual meeting with stakeholders on May 21 to kick off the public participation portion of a county-wide initiative,
the Lancaster County Housing and Homelessness Strategic Plan.
Lancaster County residents can play their part by completing a survey. “We want to get new data about best practices around homeless response and affordable housing and figure out what the needs are,” said Jocelynn Naples, director of communications, development, and special projects for the LCHRA. “We want broad participation across municipalities, across business

from Germany in 1737. “My family is from a minor branch of the Hohenzollern royal family of Germany. That may imply that I have Germanic royal blood,” he joked.
Millersville University. Very few districts or areas can claim that as a fact.”
Hoak said he was most proud of the direction the visual part of the historical society has gone, in addition to the variety of artifacts. “No other area is displaying what we have,” he said. “If you want to see a particular thing, you have to come here.”

A lifelong resident of Conestoga Township, Hoak has donated items to the museum that he has collected from the four generations of his family that have lived in the area. “It was natural for (the Conestoga Area Historical Society Museum) to be the repository of it,” he said, adding that when he sees artifacts, “it brings back nostalgia and a rush of memories, because I can associate these items with my lifetime.”

Hoak earned an art degree at what was then known as Kutztown College and a master’s degree from Columbia University, but he noted that he has always had an interest in history.
He wants museum visitors to have that same sense of appreciation for the past. “I hope that when someone comes here, they will gain an understanding of the choices people made and how people lived their lives here,” said Hoak, who is president emeritus of the Conestoga Area Historical Society. The museum, 51 Kendig Road, Conestoga, will be open every Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. through Sunday, Dec. 14.
Hoak calls the Conestoga Area Historical Society’s exhibits an ethnological museum. Merriam-Webster defines ethnology as “a branch of cultural anthropology dealing chiefly with the comparative and analytical study of cultures.”
“I hope the younger people will become aware of the culture and the history that is involved here,” said Hoak. “Every location has its own history, and sometimes the history of the area is unique to it. Our area, the Penn Manor region, is a unique area because its population ranged from illiterate people to highly educated people, thanks in part to what is now
He bases those opinions on his adventures. “I have knowledge from having visited many museums, not only in the United States but around the world when I took a sabbatical from teaching and traveled the globe for three months in 1968,” he said. “I know what I see and what I like. And the way things are arranged here is a result of my education and experience.”
Hoak remains active with other community institutions. He is on the board of council of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and a member of the exclusive Echo Valley Art Group and the Louise Arnold Tanger Arboretum. Hoak previously served on the board of the Wolf Museum of Music & Art.
“I have a deep history in what these groups stand for, and it gives me an opportunity to bring my thoughts to reality,” he said.
Hoak is also known for his welded metal sculptures and is listed as a metal artist in the Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Conestoga Area Historical Society vice president Jim Kauffman said the museum wanted someone with an art background to design the displays, and Hoak has been a fixture ever since. “We kind of think it’s his (museum),” said Kauffman. “He treats it like it’s a family.”
Kauffman noted that the curator frequently spends his own money to help ensure the exhibits meet his standard. “He’s done a great job,” said Kauffman.

sectors. Our ideal would be for all county residents to fill the survey out. We know that’s not possible, but we’re trying to push it as widely as we can.”
County residents can go to https://lchra.com to complete the survey, which will be available until approximately Thursday, Aug. 21. The questionnaire will also be publicized on the Facebook accounts for the Lancaster County Housing and Redevelopment Authority and the Lancaster County Homelessness Coalition.
The anonymous survey is composed of 12 questions, including information about the residents’ demographics and household income.
“Our programs are income constrained, so (we need to know if) we are reaching the people that can access our programs and services,” Naples said. “Or do we need to adjust our outreach strategy? We’re really trying to make it representative across not only geography, but socioeconomic distribution as well.”
Naples added, “It will really help us improve how we can
reach out and provide services to the people who are in need of assistance and help us do what we’re doing better across the county.”
Justin Eby, who is the executive director of the LCHRA, stated the survey will likely reinforce some of the issues the group believes need to be addressed, in addition to making the LCHRA aware of other areas the group should be focusing on that are burdens to people’s ability to have a roof over their head.
The coalition is composed of more than 50 organizations in various forms, including housing programs, street outreach, and shelter provision.
The LCHRA asks that people who need assistance dial the United Way’s 211 number or go to https://pa211east.org to find a service provider and be directed to resources based on location.

“The county is different as far as housing issues (are concerned),” said Eby. “We want to make sure that we can capture information on people’s struggles, (such as) how to connect with services and the lack of a certain housing types. It will help inform us so we can have actual objectives and outcomes. We don’t want to have a plan where we can’t reach those goals.”
The LCHRA oversees housing choice voucher programs for county residents outside of Lancaster city, including a federal rental subsidy program. Eby said a total of 810 individuals or families are getting this help from the program, which includes assistance for youths and veterans.
not accepting applications. Eby estimated that the group will be able to resume taking applications in 18 to 24 months.

Eby said the LCHC has been around for nearly two decades and moved to the LCHRA’s Penn Square headquarters in 2021. The team works to help spearhead planning, funding, coordinating, and reporting on services to address homelessness.

Eby explained that vouchers are a rental assistance program. “We make sure someone is not paying more than 30 or 40% of their income on rent and utilities,” he said. “We also cover the gap in rent for an individual if he or she is on a fixed income.” The vouchers ensure landlords are getting paid, and units are inspected to ensure safety issues are addressed.
LCHRA is working through a waiting list and is currently
LCHRA operates a home repair program through the Department of Housing and Human Development. The program is for income-qualified homeowners who need to make safety and security repairs to their residences, and it provides up to $25,000 to pay for work, including new roofs, electrical upgrades, and fixes for water and sewer issues.
For more information about the home repair program, email Rebeca Santos at rsantos@ lchra.com.

Ember is also a self-taught artist, who grew up in Pennsylvania. Painting for 44 years, Ember has completed more than 550 paintings. He creates in many mediums, including acrylics, oils, photography and mixed media. Ember has had both solo and group shows in Lancaster, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Soho, Brooklyn and Colorado Springs. While living in Tampa, he worked as a muralist in Ybor City, the city’s Cuban quarter. He previously had one collaborative show with Jeremy Colon of Lancaster in October 2005.¬† After a long break from this type of art, he met Hansinger and began to collaborate with him in October 2024. Their first collaborative project was a 17-foot commissioned installation, eight paintings wide, completed in January. Their art opening on June 6 at Mulberry Art Studios will be their first show together, and it will feature more than 20 new paintings completed during 2025.

challenge, (because) we did the best,” Wyatt said. “I was surprised that we won the combination challenge, as we didn’t finish the task, but we did follow the rules more strictly than the other team.”
Ben said, “I felt relieved due to how much time I had devoted to developing a bolt-together/mod -
ular system. I tried to challenge myself to do things in an organized, professional manner, and it seems to have paid off.”
The Penn Manor robotics team is made up of a total of 10 freshmen and sophomores who meet weekly during the FLEX period and for occasional build sessions after

school. Gifted support adviser Jonathan Zimmerman said the team works “in small groups to develop, build, and test their robots for specific challenges. Each team creates detailed design reports, builds prototypes, tests their designs, and ultimately competes. The build process can span one to two years from initial concept to competition-ready robot.”
“I am interested in robotics because it combines all areas of STEM and requires innovation and problem-solving skills,” Wyatt said.
“I enjoy being a part of the team because I can be around people who share the same interest in robotics as I do.”
Ben added, “My interest in robotics stems from my natural inclination to work with my hands to solve mechanical problems.”
Zimmerman said the robotics program has been active since
2018. “It was founded by students with a strong passion for engineering,” said Zimmerman, adding that a grant from the Penn Manor Education Foundation provided the team with the funding needed to get off the ground and begin building. The adviser also stated that ongoing support from local mentor Dan Yocom has been integral to the team’s growth and success.
Penn Manor finished first in the drone challenge in 2018 at the SEAL competition at Millersville. In 2019, the Comets’ squad expanded into combat robotics and took part in the 15-pound battle bot class at Bloomsburg Area High School’s annual “Rage in the Cage” event.
Penn Manor later transitioned to the 3-pound class, which allowed for more teams and additional builds, Zimmerman said.
Penn Manor finished first in the combined air/land competition in 2023. The region event is the last tournament of the season.

“The overarching goal of the Penn Manor robotics team is to provide students with a space to challenge their minds through investigation and innovation,” Zimmerman said. “Robotics requires a high level of motivation, perseverance, and precision. Teams often spend hours troubleshooting through trial and error. My goal for team members is not only to develop technical skills in building and programming but also to foster teamwork, creativity, and the resilience to overcome adversity and failure.”
Bethany Presbyterian Church, 25 N. West End Ave., Lancaster, will host its annual spring basement sale on Saturday, May 31, from 8 a.m. to noon.
The two rooms on the church’s ground floor will feature household goods, home d√©cor, collectibles, games, puzzles, books, toys, small appliances, furniture, plants, tools, and more. Also available will be hamburger barbecue, chili, chicken corn soup, hot dogs, beverages, and baked goods to eat on-site or for takeout.
Proceeds will benefit Boy Scout Troop 4, which the church has sponsored for more than 50 years. In previous years, the event has supported the Boys & Girls Club, volunteer fire companies, and the Lancaster Public Library.
Attendees should enter the sale area through the front stairs or via the ramp at the back of the building. Parking is available at the rear of the building. For more information, contact chairperson Pat Rineer at 717-898-8885.
