Percussion Unit Places Second at Championships
After seven years of growth and competition, the Penn Manor Indoor Percussion (PMIP) unit reached a milestone on May 2, securing a second-place finish at the Tournament of Bands Indoor Association (TIA) Championships in Wildwood, N.J. The event marked the first time in the program’s history that the unit, directed by Joe Fuscia, has competed on such a prestigious stage, let alone stood on the podium.
The 23-student unit entered the championships with momentum, as just weeks prior, it had captured first place at the Northern York Regionals, posting a record-breaking score of 91.05. However, halfway through PMIP’s final performance at the championships, the group faced an unexpected obstacle: a power fault in its inverter.
The technical failure instantly cut all electrical music and vocal
prompts, but the performers persevered through the remainder of the show to finish second out of 10 units in its division.
Beyond the group’s silver medal, Penn Manor’s IzEldeen Salem was recognized for individual excellence, receiving both the Regional
Scholarship and the Championships Scholarship.
PMIP’s season was a collaborative achievement led by a coaching staff that included Jack Nonnemacher, Austin Landry, Aidan Vaughn, and Ian Godinez. PMIP was also aided by the Penn Manor Band Boosters, which provided the logistical and financial backbone for the season; Music For Everyone, which contributed essential instruments and gear; and parent volunteers, who dedicated countless hours to travel, equipment management, and student support.
VisionCorps Slates Rappeling Fundraiser
VisionCorps will host Eye Drop 2026 on Friday, June 5, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Lancaster, 26 E. Chestnut St., Lancaster. The rappelling event aims to raise awareness and funding to support the organization, which is celebrating 100 years of service.
VisionCorps is a nonprofit with a goal of empowering people of all ages who are blind or vision impaired, allowing them to attain independence. Headquartered in downtown Lancaster since its founding, VisionCorps serves almost 2,000 individuals, providing services in five counties: Adams, Chester, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York. The organization also offers prevention of blindness services, including KidSight screenings for more than 12,000 preschoolers each year. VisionCorps also provides employment opportunities.

Contemplative Pentecost Service Planned
Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will host a contemplative Pentecost service in the Biblical Tabernacle Experience on Saturday, May 30, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
The contemplative experience will draw attendees into God’s ongoing journey with humanity from the tabernacle to the cross to Pentecost. In the service, participants will respond to God’s presence together as they journey through a series of stations featuring Scripture; music; and practices that engage the senses, such as hand washing and anointing.
The Biblical Tabernacle Experience is a reproduction of the tabernacle as described in the Hebrew Scriptures. The tabernacle is a valuable way to understand God’s relationship with God’s people through-
out history, illuminating God’s desire to dwell among His people, to offer redemption for broken humanity through Emmanuel, and to show God’s kingdom breaking into the world today through the Holy Spirit.
Staff members will invite the group to examine the significance of the physical pieces of the Biblical Tabernacle and offer questions for contemplation. The service is open to all but is best suited for youths and adults.

I didn’t want it to be a distraction. But at one point, I told my staff, ‘I hope you don’t mind, but I’m going to play classical music.’ What I found was that it wasn’t a distraction; it helped people concentrate.
“What I was listening to wasn’t what my staff was listening to when they were driving home,” he added. “That’s the beauty of music.”
Auscultation Brass is a Lancaster-based band made up of medical professionals - nurses and mostly doctors. Medicine is their profession, and music is their interest, but they are passionate about both.

Auscultation Brass specializes in the genres of classical, light classical, pop, marches and movie-themed music. Over the last four decades, the members have grown as musicians, the group has evolved as a band and Auscultation Brass’ library has ballooned to more than 300 pieces of music.

Memorial Day Service Planned at Cemetery

“Auscultation means to listen,” said Rothacker, a retired orthopedic surgeon and a tuba-playing resident of East Hempfield. “It’s like a doctor listening to your lungs and heart with a stethoscope. That’s Auscultation. We had a little discussion when the band was first formed. Someone came up with Auscultation, and we said, ‘That’s it.’”
Auscultation Brass is directed by Dr. Bob Belser, an ear, nose and throat man, while Dr. Michael Chambers, a maxillofacial surgeon, plays the trombone and serves as the group’s musical librarian. Chambers is joined on the trombone by Dr. Marguerite Duane, a family doctor.

“We try to practice once a week,” said Rothacker. “It’s been Sunday evenings for 40 years. At one time, that was the night that was the calmest, with medical emergencies and young kids. The thing I’m most proud of is that we’ve been able to evolve. When we first started, it was fairly basic stuff. We’re on to some more difficult music, and we’ve been able to add members.”
Established in 1985, Auscultation Brass now plays about 12 venues each year, mostly at churches, retirement homes, medical events and festivals.
“When we first started, we had patients who would come to our performances,” said Rothacker. “It was kind of like, ‘Hey, this guy has a life outside of medicine.’ But the story is music. You can be a musician, enjoy music and not necessarily make it your field. The members in our band are really good musicians and really good doctors.”

We all need the support of others, but where do people turn when they don’t have a family or friends to help? A care home in Columbia fills this need, and now you can help it continue its mission.
“Our Home of Hope provides a warm, welcoming home to individuals who may be in need of a little extra care and support,” said Robin Gamby, the home’s executive director. “Located in Columbia, we offer 30 residents 24/7 care, including all meals, laundry service, cleaning, medication assistance and transportation to doctor visits, all with Christian compassion - all the comforts and care that a loved one would have provided.”
People can support Our Home of Hope through in-kind donations, contribution to the nonprofit’s endowment fund, giving of assets, leaving a gift in a will or simply providing a treat for the residents.
The home also invites the community to a meat bingo fundraiser to be held on Saturday, May 30, at the Columbia Borough Fire Department, 726 Manor St. Doors will open at 11 a.m., and bingo will begin at 1 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at Little’s Beverage Distributor, 1224 Lancaster Ave., Columbia; through board or staff members of Our Home of Hope; or through Venmo at

Thanks to the vision of John and Mable Hershey, the former private Cherry Street Guest Home was converted into the nonprofit Our Home of Hope Inc. in 2017 so funds could be received to help underwrite the shortfall between the residents’ income and the cost of operating the facility.
“The Hersheys saved the home, with the help of many family, friends and businesses who believed in their mission,” Gamby shared.
Individuals with intellectual disabilities, minor mental health challenges or a need for just a little extra support are welcome at Our Home of Hope.
“Our residents receive the care they need to thrive with a sense of purpose,” Gamby said. “On an average day, you will see residents walking around town, playing cards or enjoying staff- or volunteer-led activities and exercise. The residents also enjoy taking care of two blocks in Columbia through the borough’s Adopt-a-Block program.”
Gamby encourages people to support the nonprofit and to see their gifts in action at an open house. It will be held at Our Home of Hope from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 27, and it will include a tour
of the home and opportunities to visit with residents.
“Thanks to many generous donors and volunteers, we are able to provide the residents with a loving home,” Gamby said. “The home has been blessed with many volunteers who love to entertain the residents or help with work projects. Thanks to the generous donation of a 15-passenger bus from St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, the residents will be able to enjoy trips this summer to go shopping, enjoy a country drive or their favorite - ice cream.”
She emphasized that, since residents of the home are often economically disadvantaged, the nonprofit relies on the generosity of the community to help Our Home of Hope maintain its high standard of care.
“We are also grateful to be the recipient of several grants this past year, and we continue to apply for grants
for other needs of the home, for a generator; new interior railing; additional security cameras; new furniture, such as metal dressers; and new dining room chairs,” Gamby said.

Included in this year’s 100th anniversary edition of Eye Drop will be 10 stories of impact about VisionCorps’ services and innovations throughout its 10 decades of service. Also symbolic of the anniversary are the 10 stories that rappelers will pass while descending the 120-foot building.
Other special features of the event will include livestreaming of the rappelers with masters of ceremonies George Tobler and Scott Tobler, music provided by DJ Gill Sanchez starting at 9:30
a.m., food trucks in Ewell Plaza, and giveaway drawing tickets for themed baskets.
From 1 to 3 p.m., attendees may learn about accessible technology, including smart glasses. While playing games such as cornhole and jumbo Connect 4 and Jenga, people may try simulator glasses to experience what different levels of vision are like.
Kids’ activities will be available from 10 a.m. to noon., including book readings in the Lancaster Public Library that will teach children about their eyes and how to keep them healthy. The West Goshen Lions Club will offer free vision screenings for children, and kids may meet and take photos with Abby the Ability Bear, VisionCorps’ new mascot, and Cylo, the Stormers’ mascot.

Those age 70 or older can receive money through the program to help with pressing needs, up to a maximum of $1,000. Funds may be used for needs such as groceries, utilities, doctor visits, medication, other small bills, or various other needs. There is a one-time fee to cover the account setup.
The organization is seeking donations of a laptop and tablet with the Windows 11 operating system, as well as men’s suits, sizes 42 to 44. A van is also needed to deliver goods to clients.
