Virtual Convoy Scheduled For Aug. 16 By Ann Mead Ash
In April, COVID-19 restrictions put Make-AWish of Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley, an organization that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening diseases, in a precarious position. Concern for the children served by Make-A-Wish, who fall into high-risk categories, was of the utmost importance. Wishes were postponed, and the popular Mother’s Day Convoy, which was ready to make a move to the Manheim Auto Auction, was postponed. The convoy is now scheduled as a virtual event to be held on Sunday, Aug. 16. In the meantime, Make-A-Wish needed to raise See Make-A-Wish pg 2

community who visit the event. No carnival will be held; however, a modified small truck convoy featuring the top 30 drivers and key sponsors will leave the auto auction during the day. The convoy will be broadcast live from the Make-A-Wish Facebook page. In addition, organizers are working to create other ways to share parts of the traditional convoy festivities, such as the food, clowns, and carnival games. Clowns gathered for a photo at a past Mother’s Day Truck Convoy, which raises funds for Make-A-Wish. The 2020 convoy has been rescheduled as a virtual event on Aug. 16. In addition to postponing the convoy, the chapter has had to cancel or postpone many other in-person events that raise pivotal funds for wish-granting efforts. Make-A-Wish counts on the local community, especially truck drivers to make the rescheduled virtual convoy a success. Funds raised by the convoy have supported more than 75% of wishes granted to area children each year. Make-A-Wish hopes that area residents will continue to support the organization during this critical time because the longer
the COVID-19 safety precautions are in place, the larger the number of local children waiting for wishes will continue to grow. Community support is vital as the organization looks to safely grant wishes involving travel or large gatherings. Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley first began granting wishes in 1986. The Make-A-Wish organization grants a wish to a critically ill child approximately every 34 minutes. Area residents responded positively to the effort, and by mid-May nearly $100,000 had been raised mainly by 18 teams and 66 participants. Dennis Heron, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish of Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley, said that the organization was “blown away” by the support. “On behalf of the children and families we serve, we thank everyone who donated for their dedication to the Make-A-Wish mission, especially during these challenging times,” said Heron. On May 9, Make-A-Wish announced that the decision to turn the convoy into a virtual event had been made by staff and volunteer convoy planning committee members, and that the August date had been set. The decision was based on concern for the Make-A-Wish children and the members of the

USA competition happened to be scheduled just in time, taking place at the Altoona Grand Hotel on March 14. Riley placed second in formal wear and third in interview. “I thought she did really well for being her first competition,” Kaire remarked. “It was a really great experience. We didn’t go into the competition with expectations. … There are a lot of kids who live on farms, so they’re living (the farming life) every day.” The plan for Riley’s reign is to use her crown to be an “AGvocate” for agriculture, Kaire said. To round out her knowledge, Riley was treated to a private tour of Kreider Farms in Manheim, and

she was hoping to visit Culton Organics in Silver Spring. Riley also has copies of an agriculturerelated book that she planned to read aloud at local libraries and then donate to their collections. “We want to give back,” Kaire said. Originally, Riley had hoped to promote agriculture at events and meetings throughout Lancaster County. The opportunities have disappeared because of the stay-at-home orders, but she hopes to be part of the Elizabethtown Fair and is exploring the possibility of participating in other local fairs. Proceeds from the race will be shared between Power Packs Project and the Pennsylvania Dutch Council. The staff member collecting samples is equipped with proper personal protective equipment (PPE), including an N95 mask, gloves, eye protection, and a gown. Samples are sent to a thirdparty reference lab for testing. Results are generally available in approximately two to five days and accessible on Patient First’s Patient Portal. If patients do not already have a Patient First Portal Account set up, they will receive a temporary code allowing them to create one when they arrive for testing. For most insured patients, there is no out-of-pocket expense for COVID-19 testing. The visit will be submitted to patients’ insurance. Patient First accepts all major insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. For self-pay patients, there is a set cost plus a separate bill from the lab in some cases. The lab determines what, if anything, it bills the patient. Appointments are not needed for visits unrelated to COVID-19 testing. All Patient First centers have taken steps to provide a safe environment for patients and staff, including requiring all patients and staff to wear masks while inside the center, thoroughly disinfecting surfaces throughout the center at regular intervals, requiring frequent handwashing, and limiting visitors to only essential family members. While many local residents may be feeling the effects of staying home due to COVID-19 restrictions, Friends in Action (FIA), a nonprofit headquartered in Middletown, is offering an opportunity to have a global impact. Since 1992, FIA has used infrastructure projects as a platform to share the Gospel with unreached people groups in extremely remote areas. On April 6, Cyclone Harold, a Category 5 cyclone and the second-largest storm in Vanuatu’s history, almost leveled the South Pacific island country. To the people in Vanuatu’s hundreds of NiVan villages, some of whom still wear leaves or traditional loincloths for clothing and survive on subsistence farming, the storm was catastrophic. Dense jungle was shredded into barren sticks, entire villages were wiped out, roads were destroyed by flooding, and mudslides and debris caused a delay in the efforts to account for hundreds of villagers. Selin, a NiVan mother, and her children search for food in their village in the South Pacific island country of Vanuatu. The country was devastated by a recent cyclone, and Friends in Action is offering southcentral Pennsylvania residents an opportunity to support cyclone relief efforts. were decimated. To cope, people foraged what was left of gardens and root crops for food. Rivers and creeks have been used as water sources, but contamination from livestock has led to waterborne illnesses. “We’ve been eating what we can find on the ground, but that will soon be gone. I don’t know how we will survive,” a NiVan man speaking his native Bislama tongue told FIA missionary partners in the area. An estimated 80% to 90% of the villagers’ bamboo huts with grass-thatched roofs were destroyed. There is little to no palm leaf left, and it will take two to three years to regrow. With no income to buy building supplies, the people are in dire need of shelter. “Thirty to forty of us women and children packed into a larger hut while the wind was pulling at the roof and sides and rain pounded through. The men ran outside and stood around the hut to hold the roof on. I was scared we all would die,” shared a NiVan village woman, recalling her village’s harrowing tale of survival. Partnering with missionaries, national pastors, and workers in the region, FIA is raising funds to secure cyclone relief supplies for the villages of Suranda, Mataloi, and Valui. Food bundles of tin tuna, rice, and noodles feed a family of eight for a week, totaling less than $3.25 per person daily. Recovery bundles - consisting of nails, hammers, handsaws, shovels, machetes, and twine and averaging less than $5 per villager - provide building supplies for an entire village to create new homes. “This effort is something everyone can take part in even from the safety of their couches at home. Every contribution will save lives,” said FIA executive director Tim Johnston, noting that this opportunity is also a way to reach the NiVan people with a tangible demonstration of God’s love. The COVID-19 pandemic has posed challenges for both farms and food banks. Farms have seen disruption in the food supply chain and food banks have seen an increase in demand for assistance. A new United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) program is designed to address both concerns simultaneously. The Farmers to Families Food Box Program will procure fresh produce, dairy products, and meats like chicken and pork from domestic farms and box them to distribute to families in need through regional food banks and other food assistance organizations. The USDA program will procure an estimated $100 million per month in fresh fruits and vegetables, $100 million per month in a variety of dairy products, and $100 million per month in meat products nationwide. Many farms have reported having to dump milk or eggs because the processing plants or packaging facilities cannot take them. The restaurants, hotels,
and schools that used to buy the bulk products are closed. The funding for the food box program will compensate the farms and the food processors to package the products to distribute to families in need. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is poised to deliver the food boxes to its network of nearly 1,000 partner agencies throughout 27 central Pennsylvania counties. The existing infrastructure built through participation in the Pennsylvania Agricultural Surplus Program, the Fill a Glass With Hope fresh milk program, and the MidAtlantic Regional Produce Cooperative means that the food bank is equipped to handle more fresh produce, dairy products, and meat. Students Continue Education During Closure Resurrection Catholic School in Lancaster is one of many schools in the county utilizing flexible instruction days during school closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Flexible instruction days allow students to continue with classroom instruction at home. All their assignments are on a platform online where they can access them throughout the day. Teachers are available to help students with assignments and are teaching lessons via video conference calls. Students in kindergarten through third grade took home packets to work on daily assignments that will later be graded for accuracy and completion. Students in fourth through eighth grades received their daily assignments online and the assignments are graded once submitted. As a way to bring routine to the
school’s students, principal Jeffrey Hughes and second-grade teacher Sister Kristen Forgotch have presented daily announcements and morning prayers to students virtually. Each morning, Hughes and Forgotch record themselves via Zoom reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, making daily announcements that include singing “Happy Birthday” to students, and a morning prayer. Students, parents, guardians, and community members follow along on Resurrection’s Facebook page and YouTube account. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) announced it received a $100,000 grant from the PNC Foundation to aid in its response to the COVID-19 crisis. The gift will be used to help meet the needs of food insecure residents of central Pennsylvania during the COVID-19 crisis. To feed children and their families, as well as all those facing hunger during this time, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is packing and distributing boxes of crisis response food. All crisis response boxes contain approximately 25 pounds of shelf-stable food as well as fresh milk, produce, and meat. To reduce barriers, the CPFB provides all crisis response food to its partners at no cost. The funding from the PNC Foundation will help underwrite the costs of procuring, packing, and distributing the crisis response food. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and PNC share a large footprint in central Penn-
sylvania. The food bank serves 27 counties, many of which overlap with PNC’s market, including Centre, Dauphin, Lancaster and York counties. Some of the work the food bank has been doing in these areas will be supported by the grant, including biweekly crisis response distributions across Harrisburg supported by the Harrisburg School District and the Harrisburg Police Department; weekly crisis response distributions by PowerPacks in Lancaster County, a partner of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank; continuation of BackPack programs while schools remain closed in York County; and distribution of grab-and-go meals and crisis response boxes to youth feeding sites across Centre County.
