PMEF Awards Spring Grants he Penn Manor Education Foundation has awarded more than $37,000 in grants to teachers, counselors and social workers to support Penn Manor students and their families for spring 2022. The grant awards are in addition to the more than $40,000 in Venture Grants

awarded to Penn Manor teachers in the fall of 2021. This latest round of grants includes $18,679 in teacher Venture Grants and $18,951 in Strong & Healthy Families grants. A list of grants is available at https:// pennmanoredfoundation.org/ tax-credits-grants/recent-projects/.
The Strong & Healthy grants include $7,000 to support the TeenHope program, which provides mental health screenings for all Penn Manor seventh- and ninth-graders to identify those who may be struggling. A $5,000 grant is being used to purchase uniforms, tools, supplies and certification fees for students who attend Lancaster County Career & Technology Center programs. A $3,500 grant is helping students pay for Advanced Placement exam fees, and a $1,951 grant is funding a portion of the tuition cost for students to attend dual-enrollment college-credit classes. Students are identified for this assistance based on their family incomes. A $1,500 grant is funding a Literacy Outreach program that will distribute free children’s books in the Manor Heights, Brunswick Farms, Willow Run and
Pheasant Ridge neighborhoods, in conjunction with the Lancaster Library Bookmobile. The teacher Venture Grants include several that support the arts. Grants totaling more than $2,500 will fund easels and digital cameras for high school art classes, and a $3,520 grant will pay for a new kiln at Pequea Elementary School. Two grants totaling more than $1,300 will support an effort to teach Life Skills students how to purchase and cook healthy foods by providing grocery gift cards and a griddle, a blender and an air fryer for use in class. Other grants will fund “surf seats,” exercise balls and other alternative seating options for elementary students; school gardening instruction; a language translator; and detailed anatomical models for high school biology classes. When Wesley Moyer moved to Lancaster County several years ago, he had a special reason to look for a place to live in Akron. Moyer specifically chose the borough because he likes Lloyd H. Roland Memorial Park, 221 N. 11th St., Akron. Moyer’s connection to the park is not simply due to an affinity for the outdoors, but rather is tied to his interest in disc golf, a sport he first discovered at summer camp in Pottstown as a teenager. “I got more serious (about disc golf) when I came here,” said Moyer, who is now the secretary of the 75-member Lancaster County Disc Golf Club (LCDGC). He also volunteers to help maintain the disc golf course at Akron - a 27-basket course with holes in the open, in the pine forest, and mixed between fairways and woods. Maintenance ranges from

Daniel L. Diehl, MD Announces His Retirement June 30, 2022 He has been a family doctor in Willow Street, PA for 38 years (two years in Quarryville). He took over for Dr. Donald Witmer August 6, 1984. He was in solo practice for 32 years until he and four other physcians joined Penn State Health in 2016. Vietnam Memorial Ceremony Slated The Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) and Associates Chapter 1008 of Lancaster will hold a wreath laying and ceremony in honor of Memorial Day on Sunday, May 29, at 1 p.m., rain or shine, at Greenwood Cemetery, South Queen Street, Lancaster, at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The memorial was erected in the early 1980s in honor of Lancaster County Vietnam veterans who gave their lives in service to their country. Taking part in the ceremony will include the Lancaster County Veteran Honor Guard and the Vet 21 Gun Salute, which will do a rifle salute and taps. Memories of the military personnel honored on the memorial will be shared in addition to reading the names of departed VVA members from May 2021 to the present. Concerts Planned In Huffnagle Park The Quarryville Lions Club will present its 2022 summer concerts at Huffnagle Park. Events will be held on select Saturdays, and the series will open on May 28 with Split Focus. Crescendo Choir will perform on June 11, and Part Time Managers will be featured on July 16. The series

Disc golf, not unlike traditional golf, involves tees and holes, but the holes are baskets and the balls are flying discs. The goal is to put the disc in the basket in the fewest possible throws. “(Akron) is a par three course, so it’s 54 par, and professionals will shoot 45 or 46, while an average (player) shoots about 56,” explained Moyer, who noted for groups of three players, the course takes about three hours and 30 minutes to complete. He noted that while league members meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, many families and members of the Plain community enjoy the course on Sundays. Just as with clubs for traditional golf, discs are divided by designation. Fairways, drivers, mids, and putters are chosen by the player based on the distance of the throw and other factors. Moyer has stacks of discs he has collected, but he said that starter packs of three can be purchased at a

The Solanco Cross-Country and Track Alumni Association will host a one-hour race and team relay on Saturday, June 11, at the Art Harrington Track Complex at Solanco High School, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville. In the case of severe weather, the event will be held on Sunday, June 12. Registration is open to all Solanco studentathletes, families, alumni, and friends of Solanco cross-country. The event, which will take place under the lights, will feature two races: one for individuals and one for relay teams of four runners. Individuals and relay teams will attempt to log as many miles as they can during the one-hour run on the Solanco track. Two special categories to be featured this year are the Walk With Waggs Challenge, which will be held during the individual race, and the Lancaster-Lebanon League Cross Country (LLLXC) Team Division. A $750 grant is funding three “Family Fun Nights,” at which Penn Manor students in the English Language Development program and their families are treated to dinner and bingo and learn about community services available through organizations such as the Spanish American Civic Association of Lancaster. The American Revolutionary War, which lasted from 1775 to 1783, was the war by which North America’s 13 colonies won political independence from Great Britain. Ten years after sailing from Ireland to Pennsylvania, Edward Hand joined the Continental Army in 1775 - one year after he moved to Lancaster to practice medicine. Gen. Hand became commanding officer of the First Pennsylvania Rifle Regiment and played a critical role at the Siege of Boston, the Battle of New York, and the First and Second Battles of Trenton. Following the war, Hand returned to Lancaster, where he became involved in politics. He and his family moved to Rock Ford in 1794. Located along the banks of the Conestoga River at 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, Hand’s house became a historic house museum in 1958 after the Rock Ford Foundation was established. Once restorations to the property were completed, the house opened to the public in 1960. Although the current barn on the property is not original, it is situated where Hand’s barn once stood. After more than three years of planning and designing, the John J. Snyder Jr. Gallery of Early Lancaster County Decorative Arts opened on the second floor of the barn in the spring of 2021. From Wednesday, June 1, to Sunday, Oct. 30, the gallery will host a new exhibit titled “Long Rifles of the American Revolution: How Lancaster County Craftsmen Helped Win the War.” Guest-curated by Pennsylvania long-rifle authority John Kolar, the exhibit will include approximately 35 Revolutionary War-era rifles from the collection of Historic Rock Ford as well as loaned rifles and related accoutrements from museums and private collectors from across the nation.

“We’re getting a lot of objects from private donors and other museums, and some of those items have never really been on public display before, so I’m kind of blown away that we have a variety of people lending different things,” stated curator Sarah Alberico. Two significant items that will be featured in the exhibit will be loaned from the National Museum of the United States Army: the Thomas Tileston 1773 rifle as well as the 1776 seal of the 1st Continental Regiment. Hand’s signature is on the only known surviving document bearing the original imprint from the seal. “We want it to be an exhibit that would appeal to long-rifle aficionados and to the general public and people with an interest in history,” said executive director Samuel C. Slaymaker III. The exhibit will entail far more than a display of Revolutionary War weaponry; rather, it will be presented in a narrative format to tell the story of how Lancaster County and its rifle makers played a pivotal role in supplying American rifle regiments with weapons that provided the accuracy and flexibility to successfully overturn the British. This will be the first occasion that these objects have been brought together in a single exhibition, accented by storyboards, maps, and illustrations from the work of renowned military history artist Don Troiani.
