author Dorothy Parker is said to have remarked, “I hate to write, but I love having written.”

Robert Ethan White enjoys both aspects of the process.

The Penn Manor High School senior’s first book, “Susquehannock,” was recently released through Lulu Self Publishing.

The tome can be purchased by going to https://lulu. com, clicking on “Bookstore,” and searching for either “Robert Ethan White” or “Susquehannock.” Ethan is hoping it will also become available at local bookstores and on Amazon.

a daughter, but loses both his wife and daughter in a tragedy, which drives him to vices and self-loathing.

Higgins isolates himself further from his friends and members of the community, and his anger and regret manifest inside him, first in recurring nightmares. Then the creatures that were hurting him in his dreams enter the world, hurting the people he loves. Higgins must reconcile with himself and the creatures to save the land and other people, as well as himself.

“I hope it’s a book that helps people and that changes people.”

Ethan said “Susquehannock” is the story of redemption for a “miserable old man” named Dean Higgins. Higgins is growing up in a city when he suffers a traumatic experience, which prompts his father to take him to a place where he will be safe, a small river community in the Susquehannock region. Higgins grows up in an isolated, ratty shack on the banks of the Susquehanna River. He gets married and has

“I’ve never been a fan of self-help books,” Ethan said.

“Fiction exists to provide selfhelp in a way that’s fun to read. I hope my book unites people and helps someone who is struggling to get past a hard place.”

He had long had the idea for a story about a sad, lonely old man living along a river, but the beginnings of a short story remained untouched for years in a document titled “Express Yourself.”

He woke up one morning in a bad mood and started evolving the character that would become Dean Higgins. While on a camping trip to Susquehannock State Park with a group from church, he came across an overlook called Hawk Point, and he did not overlook it. “I could see left side of the river and the right side of the river, and it looked like I could see the whole world in one view.” He noticed a shack by the side of the Susquehanna, wondered what kind of person lived there, and

Millersville will honor one of its own.

Pavilion A at Freedom Memorial Park will be christened The John Herr Jr. Pavilion in a ceremony that fittingly will be held on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, at 9 Shertzer Lane, Millersville, beginning at 11 a.m.

Jack, as he was known, graduated from Penn Manor High School in 1943, served in the military during World War II, operated the family supermarket, and was a friend to numerous local organizations. He died in January 2024 at the age of 99.

The ceremony will begin with an invocation by Grace United Methodist Church minister Kerry Leeper. Organizations that donated to the purchase of the plaque will be given the opportunity to have a representative speak at the dedication: the Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS), which spearheaded the project; the Millersville Lions Club; the Millersville Woman’s Club; the Penn Manor Alumni Association; Millersville-Manor VFW Post 7294; and the Conestoga Area Historical Society.

Organizations renew partnership

Leaders from Circle Legacy Center and Mennonite Life signed a new memorandum of understanding on April 8 at the Lancaster Longhouse, renewing their commitment to partnership. The signing of the memorandum provided an opportunity for the organizations to reflect on their years of partnership and to look forward to future

collaboration.

The event followed an evening gathering at the 1719 Museum where representatives of both organizations exchanged stories, gifts, and words of gratitude and intent.

LMS librarian puts fun in reading fundamentals

Like most libraries, Lancaster Mennonite’s elementary school library is an inviting place where kids can explore the topics that they are interested in. From the exterior, it might seem that Sarah Fichtner serves as the hostess of the space.

But Fichtner is also a child advocate, a reading proponent and an igniter of imaginations. She has personalized her position as Lancaster Mennonite’s elementary school librarian and firmly placed her own stamp upon it.

“I’ve always had a love of reading,” said Fichtner. “I was always the person with her nose in a book. Maybe

I’ve been destined for this. Today’s society has so many distractions of screens. I like to spark the interest in books. Once (students) catch that fire, it’s fun to see them want to check out the next book in the series.”

Fichtner has been the Lancaster Mennonite elementary school librarian for 15 years. Some of her duties include checking books in and out, teaching reading skills and managing the library’s collection of books.

Fichtner plays a key role in the elementary education process at Lancaster Mennonite, both serving as an educator and providing support for classroom teachers.

“A librarian is an educator who helps students find books to read that they’re interested in,” said Fichtner, a resident of Millersville. “It has to interest them, or it will stay in their backpacks. I teach them basic library skills, the difference between fiction and nonfiction, how to look up a book and what the Dewey Decimal System is. I do consider myself an educator, but I also support what’s going on in the classroom.”

Fichtner hosts Lancaster Mennonite’s entire elementary school population - 185 prekindergarten to fourth-grade students - in the library, by grade and by class, for 30 minutes once a week. These days, children

are beginning to learn how to read in kindergarten or before.

“Something I specifically do is make boxes of themed books available so students can look through the whole box,” said Fichtner. “Kids will often come with specific requests, and they’re all at different levels. (The boxes) can be good starting places for reluctant readers. If a kid comes to the library with a specific idea about a subject and can’t find it, it can be frustrating. They want to find what they’re interested in. My knowledge of our collection allows me to point kids in whatever direction they want to go.”

thought of the short story he had outlined.

Ethan started writing “Susquehannock” in August during an independent study program with Penn Manor English teacher Scott Hertzog, a published author who had previously assisted five other students with projects.

“I’ve always loved telling stories,” Ethan said. “My favorite thing in the world is a well-told story. Writing a book didn’t ever seem like a possibility. I didn’t think about that because it seemed beyond my capabilities.”

Ethan landed the lead role in the school play, which slowed the book’s progress, but he finished the draft in December, a day he vividly

remembers. “I was tired because I wake up at 5:30 (a.m.) every day and didn’t plan on staying up late, but I knew I was on the final chapter, so I kept writing,” he said. Ethan penned the last words while lying in bed at 1 a.m.

“It was a really incredible feeling,” he said. “I knew I was going to write a story, but I didn’t know it if would come full circle. I didn’t know if it was going to be satisfying. I didn’t know if it was necessarily going to be good. That’s up to everybody else. But it was finished. I had told the story that needed to be told.”

Ethan gave Hertzog three or four chapters at a time during the process. The teacher became emotional while reading the last couple sections. “I remember reading it and weeping because of the power of the story of this character (Dean Higgins),” said Hertzog. “I wept (while reading the penultimate chapter) and wept at the very end.”

Ethan said he has new ideas and will get started on his next project as soon as his life slows down. After graduating from Penn Manor in June, Ethan will serve a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in a location that has not been determined. He will continue to write in his free time and then attend Drexel University, where he is unsure about a major but will minor in creative writing.

Ethan is grateful for the support of his family: his father, Joseph, a graphic designer responsible for the book’s cover; his mother, Cheri; and his sister, Layla. He was inspired by Hertzog and Penn Manor High School faculty members Brian Reinking and Pamela Lindstrom. “They are the greatest teachers I’ve ever had,” Ethan said.

“If there is anything I want the reader to get out of my book ... I hope they take it to heart,” Ethan said. “I want them to understand the character (Dean Higgins) and sympathize or emphasize with him. I hope it’s a book that helps people and that changes people because that’s what I think stories are made for, to bring some hope into people’s lives.”

The Pennsylvania team won the Team Impact Award.

The 1719 Museumone of Mennonite Life’s museums - offers tours of the Lancaster Longhouse and the 1719 Herr House, exploring the interconnected histories of Lancaster County’s early Susquehannock-Conestoga and related peoples and Swiss-German Mennonites who immigrated in the 18th century.

The organizations have worked in partnership since 2007. Joint ventures include the annual Maize and Snitz Fest at the 1719 Museum and Lancaster Longhouse and public relations at local indigenous cultural events, such as the Lawilowan American Indian Festival and at Blue Rock Heritage Center events.

The Lancaster Longhouse was an early shared effort, built in 2013 and born from the 2010 Honor and Healing service hosted in Lancaster. The service brought together local religious groups and indigenous communities to acknowledge historic

wrongs committed against native peoples. Circle Legacy Center labored alongside Mennonite Life to create the longhouse as a space for education and cultural connection and exchange.

Some of the gifts shared in the Lancaster Longhouse on April 8 - pots of beebalmsymbolized the intertwined history of the land beneath the structure and its cultural communities. The native herb has been used by both indigenous and Swiss-German cultures for a variety of culinary and medicinal purposes.

Until it is affixed to the pavilion, the plaque is being kept by MAHS president Phil Gerber in a special brown paper bag, one that bears the logo of John Herr’s Village Market, the grocery store founded by Jack’s grandfather Dan.

Gerber approached Millersville borough council about naming the pavilion in honor of Jack and was permitted to proceed. Gerber said Jack was one of the largest employers in Millersville when he ran the family business, perhaps second only to Millersville University.

“Any time anything was happening in the borough, Jack offered to provide food or drinks or help in any way he could,” said Gerber.

Jack graduated from Penn Manor at the age of 17. With his parents’ permission, he joined the Army Air Corps, and he was a gunner on missions over Germany. The plaque lists Jack’s many contributions to local groups. He was a Commonwealth National Bank Advisory board

member and served on the Penn Manor School District board of directors for 12 years.

Jack led the effort to build the Millersville Lions Club Pool in 1961 when he was president of that organization. He was the recipient of a Melvin Jones Fellowship from Lions Club International. “Today, the pool is thriving because of his leadership and the vision he had for a community pool,” said Ron Trout, a fellow Lion who was a friend of Jack’s.

Jack served as president of Millersville Area Meals on Wheels and was one of three founding members of the Millersville Business Association. He was a major supporter of both the Millersville Area Historical Society and the Conestoga Area Historical Society. A life member of Post 7294, Jack was grand marshal of the Millersville Parade in 2001.

Keith Eshleman, the current owner of John Herr’s Village Market, stated that Jack worked tirelessly for the Lions Club; provided groceries to those in need; and aided his alma mater, Penn Manor, all “because it was the right thing to do.”

The Eshlemans and Herrs have been linked since the early 1960s, thanks to a chance meeting between Keith’s father, James, and Jack’s dad, John Sr. John Sr. hired James to unload watermelons when James was 7 years old, and Keith said his father was unofficially adopted by John Sr. Many years later, James bought the market.

“As community support goes, you’d have to look pretty far to find someone as dedicated to a community as Jack was to his,” Eshleman said.

Jack’s son Daniel said, “It humbles me and makes me so proud of my father that the community recognizes

my father in this special way. My dad strived off the power of connection to the community and the importance of giving to our town of Millersville.”

Daniel added that the market served as a hub for the area. “The grocery store wasn’t just a place of business; it was a place where so many people and family generations could work and meet,” he said.

“While I feel Dad’s absence every day, (I find comfort) knowing that this pavilion will provide a place of gathering and maybe remind people of my father’s generosity and strong belief in Millersville.”

“My favorite thing to do at school is reading in the library,” said second-grade student Miriam Charles.

The Lancaster Mennonite elementary school library is an all-print, allbook facility; it does not offer online resources. The library averages a total of about 1,200 check-ins, checkouts and renewals each month.

“At the elementary level, we try to limit how much students are on screens,” said Fichtner. “We’re emphasizing print at the elementary level.
