review committee, parent Marlisa Thomas had high praise for her daughter’s former teacher. “Our family is so grateful that our daughter, Stella, found a place in Mrs. Raff ’s unique sixth-grade classroom,” Thomas wrote. “She was nurtured each day and challenged to grow and succeed, not just academically, but in her awareness and maturity.” Raff’s classroom was decorated in an “Alice in Wonderland” theme and featured a large library with books in every genre, as well as a raised stage where students could present poetry, book reports, and original music to the entire class. Raff has encouraged movement among her students, leading them through physical exercises that help them understand parts of speech, literary conventions, and other lessons. “Whether (Stella) was engaged in See Teacher Of The Year pg 2
MU Supports PM’s Transition To Online Learning Compassion might be last in the list of Millersville University’s (MU) EPPIIC Values of Exploration, Professionalism, Public Mission, Inclusion, Integrity, and Compassion, but it is the significant motivator for a cooperative program between the college and the Penn Manor (PM) School District. The new partnership was made possible by the teamwork of MU staff and faculty members including Dr. Nazli
Hardy, who teaches computer science; Allison Yarrow, who works in campus recreation; and Lori Leaman, who is an executive assistant and events coordinator in the office of civic and community engagement, in collaboration with senior leadership at Penn Manor. The group members believe that supporting their family, friends, and neighbors is of particular importance during the challenging times created by the See MU Project pg 3
Millersville University student Emily Livingston (left) provided assistance with the transition to online learning to Penn Manor School District student Illjan. The two were matched through a new partnership between the two academic institutions.
Pequea Elementary School sixth-grade teacher Elizabeth Raff ’s engagement with her students has helped her to garner a nomination for Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year.
Lancaster EMS Moms Receive Flowers And More By Ann Mead Ash
Marisa Seubert, marketing and development coordinator with Lancaster EMS, knew that many of the emergency medical services families could not be together on Mother’s Day. Thinking about that inspired her to consider what could be done for mothers this year.
By partnering with Worship Center and Whole Foods Market, Seubert was able to make Mother’s Day special for some of the organization’s first responders. On May 10 at 9 a.m., Seubert and Lancaster EMS board member Dick Moriarty picked up bouquets of flowers See Lancaster EMS pg 4
Members of Lancaster EMS staff who are mothers and who worked on Mother’s Day received flowers and gift cards from Worship Center and Whole Foods Market. Mothers at the East Lampeter Station that day included Jess C. (second from left) and Jess W. (second from right), who shared a shift with Alexis D. (far left) and Alexa M. (far right).

May 17-23 Here are a few ways to say thank you:
For the second time in three years, Penn Manor School District has a Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year finalist. Elizabeth Raff, who teaches sixth grade at Pequea Elementary School, was named one of just 12 finalists for the state honor for 2021. Raff was nominated by two previous Teacher of the Year nominees, Jeff Kuntz of Punxsutawney and Penn Manor High School psychology teacher Maria Vita, who was a finalist for the 2019 award. “It is truly an honor and a humbling experience to become a finalist for Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year,” said Raff. “I am grateful for the opportunity to share my passion and enthusiasm for education. None of this would be possible without the leadership and support from my administrators and fellow teachers.” In a letter of recommendation to the
