The new partnership was made possible by the teamwork of MU staff and faculty members including Dr. Nazli
Hardy, who teaches computer science; Allison Yarrow, who works in campus recreation; and Lori Leaman, who is an executive assistant and events coordinator in the office of civic and community engagement, in collaboration with senior leadership at Penn Manor. Marisa Seubert, marketing and development coordinator with Lancaster EMS, knew that many of the emergency medical services families could not be together on Mother’s Day. Thinking about that inspired her to consider what could be done for mothers this year.

For the second time in three years, Penn Manor School District has a Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year finalist. Elizabeth Raff, who teaches sixth grade at Pequea Elementary School, was named one of just 12 finalists for the state honor for 2021. Raff was nominated by two previous Teacher of the Year nominees, Jeff Kuntz of Punxsutawney and Penn Manor High School psychology teacher Maria Vita, who was a finalist for the 2019 award. “It is truly an honor and a humbling experience to become a finalist for Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year,” said Raff. “I am grateful for the opportunity to share my passion and enthusiasm for education. None of this would be possible without the leadership and support from my administrators and fellow teachers.” In a letter of recommendation to the

Raff taught in Philadelphia for two years before joining the Pequea staff in 2014. She graduated from Messiah College with a degree in elementary education and completed her master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Penn State University. She is currently pursuing her principal certification through Penn State. Raff lives in Lancaster Township with her husband, Jeremy, and their son, Owen. The 2021 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year will be named in December.

Seubert explained that Lancaster EMS staff members work 12-hour shifts, and Mother’s Day was no exception. The mothers working at the 6-1 East Lampeter Station were Jess W., a lieutenant and paramedic; Amanda M., a captain and paramedic; and Jess C., in the communications center. Paramedic Vickie M. worked that day at the 6-3 Columbia Avenue Station. EMT Megan H. worked at the 56-12 Willow Valley Station, while
paramedic Lee Ann H. worked at the 56-4 Buck station. EMT Lynda L. and EMT Lisa R. worked at the 56-5 Quarryville station, and EMT Joellen P. worked at the 56-6 Strasburg station. Worship Center global and local outreach pastor Chris Lautsbaugh said that the church has been specifically looking for ways to assist people and organizations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lautsbaugh said that a member of the church who is a first responder was able to help to connect the church with emergency medical personnel who were quarantined and in need of meals. The church also developed a COVID-19 fund that has been used to help food pantries and other providers such as Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services and Blessings of Hope.

Bailey Coach Disinfects First Responder Vehicles
Bailey Coach staff members have disinfected 500 first responder vehicles since April 7. first responders healthy due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Bailey Coach is a transportation company which diversified in mid-March when 99% of its transportation reservations had been canceled. Now employees travel to area life-sustaining businesses to provide disinfecting services. Staff members disinfect an average of 2.5 million square feet of space for 50 businesses each week, and on average, they are able to disinfect 15,000 square feet of space per hour with electrostatic sprayers. These sprayers are commonly used in airplanes, cruise ships, hospitals and meat packing facilities. Bailey Coach had been using the sprayers in its vehicles for years to keep passengers safe. Bailey Coach, based in Spring Grove, celebrated and recognized its volunteers for disinfecting 500 first responder vehicles since April 7. A small ceremony was held at Bailey Coach on May 5. As part of its mission to give back to the community, Bailey Coach dedicated one of its specialized electrostatic sprayers to be used on Mondays through Fridays from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. to disinfect first responder vehicles. The process to disinfect takes two to five minutes. The staff members who have been disinfecting the vehicles are volunteers from the Bailey Coach staff or their families. Bailey Coach plans to operate the free disinfecting to serve first responders in York, Adams and Lancaster counties as long as the disinfecting treatments are needed to keep the area’s

“Through a series of events, we were connected with Lancaster EMS,” said Lautsbaugh, who added that because the EMS staff members are frontline workers, church representatives felt a desire to support them. Lautsbaugh noted that support includes prayer, pastoral and/or chaplain care should it be requested, and practical ways the church could be there for the EMTs and their families. “They have been embracing us,” said Seubert. “They said, ‘Let’s give some flowers.’” Nathan Copson, store manager at the Lancaster Whole Foods location, said that Whole Foods Market is committed to supporting local communities. “I’m glad that we have a chance to help celebrate the hard-working mothers of Lancaster EMS and show our appreciation for their service,” he noted. Lautsbaugh pointed out that he is glad Lancaster EMS staff members, who are frontline heroes, can experience a sense of support from Worship Center. “We would love to be able to serve all frontline workers, but since that is not possible, this gives us a way to do for some what we wish we could do for all,” Lautsbaugh said. She noted that the committee had considered the idea of ringing bells to indicate the start of a community-wide moment of silence, but a bellringing event on May 3 did not go over as well as hoped. There is an additional logistic issue, Hess added. “Ringing the bell on the VFW tower is more complicated because someone has to climb it to reach the rope,” she explained. The VFW Post typically hosted an open house after the parade
and service, but that has also been canceled and the post has been closed since March 13. Hess noted that the organization’s income has dropped because it is not selling food and beverages, nor are its fundraising games available to members. As a result, while the VFW Post’s commitment to supporting charitable causes in the community continues to be strong, its contributions may be lower this year. “It is holding requests and then will prioritize them when it reopens,” Hess said.

Mountville Memorial Day Parade chair Beth Hess summed up the feelings of many people impacted by the cancellation of events this spring by saying, “What a disappointing year.” Hess had been looking forward to the annual parade and service, which were scheduled for Saturday, May 23, but on April 4, she announced that the parade had been canceled because of uncertainty around the COVID-19 situation. It turns out that the parade committee’s decision was the right one, as the stay-at-home order has been extended through Thursday, June 4. While the parade has been canceled, however, Memorial Day does not have to pass unremarked. “Make sure you fly your flags,” Hess advised. “I will decorate more than I used to.” Hess noted that her plans for decorating for the patriotic holiday include planting red, white, and blue petunias and hanging bunting. Observing Memorial Day has been important for Hess since childhood. Her father was in the
service, so she has emotional ties to the military. “As a kid, I was in Girl Scouts, and we used to put the flowers on (veterans’) graves,” Hess recalled. The floral tradition has changed in recent years, with attendees of the service at the cemetery placing provided carnations onto the graves of veterans. While the emphasis this year will be on personal observation of Memorial Day, individuals may visit veterans’ gravesites at local cemeteries, so long as they maintain social distancing. The Reese-Hall Mountville VFW Post 8757 has stripped down its plan for its cemetery service to include only a few people. Members of the honor guard will attend, and Mountville residents may hear their gunshots. Additionally, the VFW will still place flags at the graves of all veterans interred in the cemeteries in and around Mountville. However, volunteers will take turns going to the different burial sites in small groups. Hess suggested that individuals take a moment of silence at some point on May 23 or on

The Scouts will receive the rank of Eagle Scout at the Troop 267 Court of Honor banquet, to be held at The Gathering Place in Mount Joy at a later date. A total of 100 Scouts from Troop 267 have earned this honor. Brady C. Loucks, 17, is the son of Thomas and Charity Loucks of Mount Joy. Before becoming a part of Troop 267, Brady was a member of Cub Scout Pack 181, located at Ironville United Methodist Church, where he earned the Arrow of Light, the highest award of Cub Scouting. In his time in Troop 267, he has held the leadership positions of patrol leader and troop historian. He has also earned his Bronze and Gold Palms. Lancaster Sunrise Rotary Club recently donated $7,000 to the Anchorage Breakfast Program. Anchorage provides no-cost, buffet-style meals five days a week, 52 weeks a year to people facing homelessness in Lancaster who are low-income and food insecure. The program currently serves between 150 and 200 guests daily. The Anchorage Program adheres to the COVID-19 social distancing guidelines as it continues to provide bagged breakfast meals for all of its guests.
Several key fundraisers for the year have been canceled, creating an immediate financial need. Last year, Anchorage served a total of 44,606 meals. The Lancaster Sunrise Rotary Club currently meets on Thursdays from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. via video conferencing. While being a part of Troop 267, Sam held the leadership positions of patrol leader twice and librarian. His peers elected him to the Order of the Arrow. For his Eagle Scout project, Sam fixed up an area of the shooting range at the Columbia Fish and Game Commission. The project included building two new benches from scratch as well as repairing two existing benches. Sam is a freshman at Hempfield High School. Sam’s future plans include possibly attending the U.S. Naval Academy.
